Is fast food making us depressed?

(SPL)
Do burgers, sugary snacks and other unhealthy foods exacerbate the effects of mental illness? David Robson investigates the evidence, and discovers a surprising new idea to help treat depression.

The people entering Felice Jacka’s offices over the next few months will be in the throes of depression. She wants to help them but her approach is unorthodox. Her team at Deakin University in Australia won’t be trying out a new cocktail of drugs. Nor will they be mulling over the patient’s childhood, their jobs, or their marital difficulties to help them cope with their problems. Instead, she wants them to talk about food.

If Jacka is right, changing their eating habits could be a key part of these people’s recovery. She has good reason to believe this; over the last few years, a series of striking findings have begun to suggest that fatty, sugary diets are bad for the mind, as well as the body. The result is a cascade of reactions in the brain that can eventually lead to depression.

Although the link is by no means proven, the fear that we are eating our way to depression is already prompting governments to take action. The US Department of Defence is now funding a trial that will deliver daily nutrient-rich food parcels to a group of former soldiers, to see if it can reduce suicide rates in army veterans. And at the start of this year, the European Union launched the 9m euro MoodFood project to further explore the way different nutrients may influence our minds. Certainly, no one is suggesting that a new diet should immediately replace existing treatments; Jacka’s volunteers will still be taking their medications as well as changing their eating habits. But if healthier eating can improve their recovery rate or prevent some people developing symptoms in the first place it would make for a simple, complementary way to help tackle mental illness.

‘Mind and body’

To grasp why your favorite dishes could be influencing your mental health, you first need to understand a strange aspect of the mind-body connection that first came to light 20 years ago. At the time, doctors were concerned that the stresses of poor mental health would weaken the body’s immune response, leaving them open to infection. Instead, they found the exact opposite was true; in people with depression, the immune system seemed to be going into over-drive. For instance, the blood of depressed people was awash with a particular type of protein, called cytokines, which normally lead to inflammation after illness or injury.

(Thinkstock)

(Thinkstock)

As the scientists pressed on, it became clear that this was a two-way process: not only could depression cause inflammation, but crucially, inflammation from other causes seems to be triggering depression. Some grounds for this link came from diseases that are known to send cytokines flushing through the body, like arthritis or cancer; patients often report depression before a diagnosis has even been made. “The people become depressed even before they know that they have cancer, and it ties in with the high levels of cytokines” says Michael Maes at Deakin University in Australia, who has pioneered work on the biological basis of depression.

More solid evidence comes from an ingenious experiment by  at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her study involved injecting healthy volunteers with small fragments of the E. coli bacteria; it’s not enough to trigger food poisoning, but it nevertheless kicks the volunteer’s immune system into action, causing a release of cytokines. Although all the participants going into Eisenberger’s lab were reasonably happy and healthy, over the course of the day they began to develop many of the feelings you would normally associate with depression: their mood dipped and they were more sensitive to social slights, reporting feelings of disconnection and loneliness. And when Eisenberger asked them to play a computer game, for real cash prizes, the subjects appeared to take less pleasure in their wins than those who had not been injected with the fragment of bacteria changes that were also reflected in scans of the brain’s reward circuits. An inability to feel pleasure, called anhedonia, is one of the most common symptoms of depression.

Evolutionary hangover

Lethargy during illness may have made sense during our evolution, says Eisenberger. “When dealing with infection, you would want to slow down, withdraw, and use your energy to recuperate instead of going out,” she says. But if, for whatever reason, the effects linger in the long-term, the results could be devastating; besides dampening your mood, inflammation can exacerbate oxidative stress in the brain. Oxidative stress, caused by toxic ‘free radicals’, could itself cause depression, since it can kill neurons, erode the brain’s long-range connections and disrupt the brain’s chemical signalling sweeping changes that seem to come with long-term mental illness and may well contribute to the symptoms.

The upshot is that we may need to think about depression in an entirely new light as a disease of the body as well as the mind. If so, many more things, besides life’s stresses, could put us at risk. Poor general fitness, smoking, and alcoholism are all known to increase an inflammatory response. And so, feasibly, could your diet: high fat and sugar levels – and the fatty tissue that results from it – are known to increase inflammation and oxidative stress. Conversely, certain nutrients such as omega-3 fish oils and minerals like zinc and selenium are antioxidants that can reduce inflammation and mop up some of the toxic chemicals, while boosting others that can help the brain to heal from damage.

Proving that this really can explain certain kinds of depression has been no mean feat, however. Although a few early studies had shown that people with depression often have a deficiency in nutrients like zinc, and that offering food supplements could improve their symptoms, the experiments were often poorly designed. “The whole area had been dogged by poor trials with small sample sizes,” says Jacka. As a result, it was difficult to know if the findings had just arisen by chance.

Fish oils showed a positive impact on mental health (SPL)

But around 2010, three landmark papers caused more doctors to sit up and take notice. One took place in southern Europe, where doctors were charting the transition from the traditional Mediterranean diets, full of seafood, olive oil and nuts, to the fast food served in the rest of the West. Besides studying the risks of heart disease and diabetes, the scientists also looked at the 10,000 participants’ mental health. The differences were striking; those who lived almost exclusively on the traditional Mediterranean diet were about half as likely to develop depression over the period as those eating more unhealthy food even when you control for things like education and economic status.

Around the same time, psychologists examining UK civil servants in the famous ‘Whitehall’ studies found exactly the same pattern; over the course of five years, people who regularly indulged in processed, high-fat and high-sugar foods were about 60% more likely to develop depression over the same period. Then Jacka confirmed the results with a further 1,000 Australian volunteers. Finally, the ball started rolling. “Over the following years we’ve seen an exponential growth in the number of studies,” says Jacka. Perhaps the best evidence came this year from the lab of Frank Hu at Harvard University, who directly traced the contributions of certain diet patterns with levels of cytokines, and depression; sure enough, foods rich in olive oil, leafy vegetables and wine reduced inflammation, and slashed the risk of depression by about 40%, compared to the ‘pro-inflammatory diet’, which includes sugary drinks, processed grains and red meat.

Getting well

Even your water supply might be having an impact, according to a recent study by Leigh Johnson at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She was recently studying the mental health of people in the western parts of the state a rural population who still draw their drinking water directly from nearby wells. Crucially Johnson found that levels of the mineral selenium an anti-oxidant that can combat inflammatory stress and which is also involved in brain signalling in the well water had a direct impact on the chances of depression. People drawing water from wells with the highest levels of selenium, had about 17% lower scores on a standard measure of depression, compared to those in other areas. “That is very high,” says Maes. “It’s a really amazing result.

As provocative as these findings are, the researchers will readily admit that there is still a long way to go before we can be sure of these conclusions. Eisenberger, for instance, acknowledges that certain foods can increase our inflammatory response, but she says it wouldn’t be as pronounced as the effects seen in her E. coli study. So it’s not clear that a poor diet would be enough to set you on the road to full-blown depression. And Johnson says that we should be careful not to over-generalise the results. “There are so many factors that can affect how depression could present itself in a patient,” she says. Your genes, lifestyle, and personal circumstances could all play a role. With so many different paths, it will be important to identify who would and wouldn’t benefit from better nutrition.

(SPL)

(SPL)

Some of these issues will be addressed in the next wave of studies. So far, the results have mostly come from observational studies watching people’s existing behavior, but the researchers are now trying to actively change people’s diets in randomised trials, to see how it changes someone’s mental health. Success is by no means guaranteed; apparent correlations seen in observational studies can sometimes evaporate to thin air when you try more active measures to intervene in people’s lives either because some other explanation lay behind the apparent effect, or because the interventions themselves are not practical. It is possible, for instance, that people at risk of depression may find it more difficult to change their eating habits, if they are already facing other stresses.

Surprise finding

Yet a chance finding by Charles Reynolds at the University of Pittsburgh offers some room for optimism. He had originally been testing a new form of psychotherapy in a group of older African Americans. “These people have a disproportionate burden of risk factors for depression,” he explains. Although they hadn’t been formally diagnosed with depression, his hope was that the therapy would offer some kind of protection against mental health problems in the future. As a comparison, half the group were given simple advice on how to eat more healthily basic stuff on ways to eat delicious, nutritional meals on a low budget. Reynolds didn’t expect such a simple lifestyle change to heal his visitors’ minds he just wanted to use it as a baseline, allowing him to measure the benefits of the ‘real’ therapy.

Two years later and it was clear that something very strange was going on. As expected, the people taking the psychotherapy had a reduced risk of developing depression; but so had the diet group, to an extraordinary degree; they were about half as likely to develop depression as you would expect for this kind of group, says Reynolds, and they reported a noticeable elevation in mood. “We were surprised, frankly,” says Reynolds. Importantly, these improvements came from minimal contact with the subjects around 10 hour-long sessions across the two years. “That’s a remarkably short period of time to get the magnitude of effect that we saw.” His results were recently published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

In line with Eisenberger’s earlier reservations, Reynolds points out that there are many reasons why the change in diet could have been so successful and the potential anti-inflammatory effects are only one. Preparing more healthy meals is, in itself, a rewarding experience that boosts self-confidence, he says. “You might then believe that you can cope with other difficulties and respond adequately,” says Reynolds.

(Thinkstock)

(Thinkstock)

Either way, the result has enthused Jacka about her own upcoming trial in Australia. Unlike Reynold’s study, she is trying to find out whether it can relieve the symptoms in those people already diagnosed with depression. Her subjects will have regular meetings with a dietician, who will advise them on the best ways to improve the nutritional value of their meals. Along the way, Jacka is taking blood tests to see if she can forge a more concrete link between components of the diet, levels of inflammation and oxidative stress, and the volunteers’ ongoing symptoms. If the visits to the dietician have a big enough effect on their recovery rate, she thinks it might then be possible to try out a dietary change as a treatment in its own right.

Reynolds points out that this kind of approach may appeal to people who feel uncomfortable with seeking other kinds of treatment. “Lifestyle changes may be more acceptable because they aren’t burdened by stigma – and they aren’t as expensive,” he says. Hu agrees that it holds a lot of promise: “Improving diet quality could not only reduce depression, but also the overall quality of life.

For Jacka, a break in our love affair with fast food can’t come quickly enough. According to some predictions, nearly half of all Americans will be obese by 2030 with countries across the world following similar trends. “If we add depression to the burden of illness that results from unhealthy diet,” she says, “no country can afford the cost.”

Reality Check: Is Our Universe Real?

Human mind abstract composition
Is the world we perceive truly real?

Perhaps our human senses are deceiving us — maybe existence is an illusion, and reality isn’t real.

The idea that everything we know is merely a construction of our minds is investigated in the episode of the Science Channel program “Through the Wormhole,” hosted by Morgan Freeman.

“What is real?” Freeman asks in the show. “How can we be certain that the Universe around us actually exists? And how can we know that the world we see matches what anyone else experiences?”

Human senses are fallible. What people think they perceive is actually filtered and processed by the brain to construct a useful view of the world. Normally, this filtering is helpful, allowing people to sort out important information from the barrage of data that comes in every minute from their environment.

But this filtering ability can become a weakness, as it often does when we’re watching a magician.

“A good magician will tap into universal brain processes that underlie perception,” said Lawrence Rosenblum, a psychologist at the University of California, Riverside and a magician himself. For instance, a magician often directs the audience’s gaze to one hand while he does something with the other. [Eye Tricks: Gallery of Visual Illusions]

But Rosenblum doesn’t see the human tendency to fall for such misdirection as evidence that all of reality exists only in our minds. “Our perceptual system can be fooled, but I do not take that at all to mean that we’re constructing reality,” he told LiveScience.

All in the mind

As members of society, people create a form of collective reality. “We are all part of a community of minds,” Freeman says in the show.

For example, money, in reality, consists of pieces of paper, yet those papers represent something much more valuable. The pieces of paper have the power of life and death, Freeman says — but they wouldn’t be worth anything if people didn’t believe in their power.

Money is fiction, but it’s useful fiction.

Another fiction humans collectively engage in is optimism. Neuroscientist Tali Sharot of University College London studies “the optimism bias”: people’s tendency to generally overestimate the likelihood of positive events in their lives and underestimate the likelihood of negative ones.

In the show, Sharot does an experiment in which she puts a man in a brain scanner, and asks him to rate the likelihood that negative events, such as lung cancer, will happen to him. Then, he is given the true likelihood.

When the actual risks differ from the man’s estimates, his frontal lobes light up. But the brain area does a better job of reacting to the discrepancy when the reality is more positive than what he guessed, Sharot said.

This shows how humans are somewhat hardwired to be optimistic. That may be because optimism “tends to have a lot of positive outcomes,” Sharot told LiveScience. Optimistic people tend to live longer, healthier, more successful lives, she said, and the act of positive thinking can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. “If you think you’re more likely to get promoted, you’re more likely to put in more effort and work long hours,” Sharot said.

But this slightly distorted view of the world can also be a weakness — a person might continue to smoke because they don’t expect to get lung cancer, for example. Being more realistic is important in some cases, Sharot cautioned.

Physical reality

Physicists look beyond the human mind for external reality, but even that reality isn’t absolute truth. Fundamental reality as scientists understand it is based on quantum mechanics, a realm where all manner of strange things occur. An electron can behave as either a particle or a wave, depending on how one measures it. And scientists can measure either a particle’s position or its momentum at any given time, but never both.

“Quantum mechanics is simply the best theory we’ve ever developed,” theoretical physicist David Tong, of Cambridge University, says in the show. But so much of this reality is by definition unknowable. Another physicist featured in the show, Steven Nahn of MIT, says “I absolutely believe reality is a real thing, but that does not mean we understand it.” Nahn was part of the team of scientists who found evidence in 2012 for the Higgs boson, the particle that gives other particles their mass.

The universe may turn out to have more dimensions than we know about, where fundamental forces behave very differently than how we perceive them. For example, gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces, but in other dimensions, it could be just as strong. “Things would be very different in this hidden reality,” Freeman says. [6 Weird Facts About Gravity]

The universe could even be a kind of hologram. The amount of information that can be stored in a region of space is proportional to the region’s surface area, rather than its volume – a property known as the holographic principle. One possible implication is that reality is actually two-dimensional, and the three-dimensional world is merely an illusion, which would explain some of the wackiness of quantum mechanics.

All of these views of the world — those that we perceive in our minds, and those that physicists discover in the universe — are flavors of reality. What humans perceive as reality may be no more than an illusion. But in the end, maybe that doesn’t matter.

Sugar Is Definitely Toxic, a New Study Says

By Alice Park

Fat was the food villain these past few decades but sugar is quickly muscling in to take its place. As rates of sugar-related disorders such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease climb, many experts believe that when Americans rid themselves of fat, they simply replaced it with sugar in all its forms.

But proving that the rise of the chronic diseases was actually linked to higher sugar consumption is a challenge. Dr. Robert Lustig, from the department of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, who has made a name for himself publishing books and research addressing the question of sugar’s effects on the body, wanted clearer answers. Now, he and his colleagues believe they have come up with the definitive evidence that sugar, as Lustig says, “is toxic.”

In most lab studies, the doses of sugar that scientists test are quite high; they want to see what the effect is quickly and, depending on the research, they may not have time to wait to study the more gradual effects that might emerge. And in studies where people reduce the amount of sugar they eat, for instance, those people end up eating fewer calories overall, so it’s difficult to know whether any changes are due to the removal of sugar or to the drop in calories.

Lustig and his colleagues think they’ve produced the “hard and fast data that sugar is toxic irrespective of its calories and irrespective of weight.”

MORE: FDA Wants Nutrition Labels to Include More Detail on Added Sugars

Lustig’s confidence comes from the unique study, described in Obesity, of 43 Hispanic or African-American children aged eight to 18 years old. He collected detailed food questionnaires from each of the adolescents to get an idea of the average amount of calories they ate per day, then designed a special menu for each of them for nine days that matched the total numbers of calories they would normally eat. The only difference in the nine-day diet was that most of the sugar the children ate was replaced by starch — the overall number of calories remained the same. The children weighed themselves daily, and if they were losing weight, they were told to eat more of the provided food in order to keep their weight the same throughout the study.

“Everything got better,” says Lustig. Some of the children went from being insulin resistant, a precursor state to developing diabetes, in which the body’s insulin levels can no longer keep up with the pace of breaking down sugar that’s coming in from the diet, to insulin sensitive.

MORE: Artificial Sweeteners Aren’t the Answer to Obesity: Here’s Why

“We took chicken teriyaki out, and put turkey hot dogs in. We took sweetened yogurt out, and put baked potato chips in. We took pastries out and put bagels in,” says Lustig. “So there was no change in [the children’s] weight and no change in calories.”

After nine days of having their total dietary sugar reduced to 10% of their daily calories, however, they showed improvements in all of these measures. Overall, their fasting blood sugar levels dropped by 53%, along with the amount of insulin their bodies produced since insulin is normally needed to break down carbohydrates and sugars. Their triglyceride and LDL levels also declined and, most importantly, they showed less fat in their liver.

MORE: 7 Amazing Things That Happen to Your Body When You Give Up Soda

Because some of the children lost weight, to convince themselves that the effects weren’t due to the small amount of weight that some of the children lost, Lustig and his team compared those who lost weight to those who didn’t during the study, and found similar improvements in both groups.

“Up until now, there have been a lot of correlation studies linking sugar and metabolic syndrome,” says Lustig. “This is causation.”

The diet he provided the children isn’t considered ideal from a health perspective — starches are still a considerable source of calories and can contribute to weight gain. But Lustig relied on the starches to prove a point in a scientific study — that the effect sugar has on the body goes beyond anything connected to its calories and to weight. “I’m not suggesting in any way, shape or form that we gave them healthy food,” he says. “We gave them crappy food, processed food — and they still got better. Imagine how much even better they would have gotten if we didn’t substitute and took the sugar out. Then they would have gotten even better yet. That’s the point.”

MORE: The Trouble With Sugar Free Kids

Not everyone is convinced that the results definitely prove sugar, and not weight loss, is the culprit, however. Susan Roberts, professor of Nutrition, USDA Nutrition Center at Tufts University notes that because some of the children lost weight, it’s still possible that shedding the pounds helped their metabolic measures to improve. She also points out that the children self-reported their initial diet, which can often be inaccurate. “We know that a healthy diet and weight loss cause good metabolic changes, and although this study tries to attribute its effects to low fructose, in fact it is impossible to do that because of the study design.”

Some experts are concerned for other reasons. They’re worried that the findings may shift attention away from what they consider to be the more fundamental issue — that overall, we’re eating too much. “Too much calorie intake is still the biggest problem,” says Dr. Mark Corkins, professor of pediatrics at University of Tennessee Health Science Center and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on nutrition. He notes that the study involved children who were obese already and consuming too many calories. “It’s an important study, and the facts coming out of it are very important. It means we need to look at sugars, and at the type of sugars and sugar intake. But I worry that people are going to hang everything on this when we still need to reduce consumption.

Lustig hopes that won’t happen as more data emerges that details how sugar is altering the body in unhealthy ways outside of its caloric contribution. That wasn’t the subject of the current paper, but he promises follow up studies based on this work that will address that. This study does hint however, at what might be happening. While there has been a lot of attention on the presence of belly fat and its connection to metabolic syndrome, the fact that the children saw improvements in the amount of fat in their liver suggests that might be an important way that sugar is contributing to chronic disease. Obese children and those with diabetes often suffer from fatty liver, a condition normally associated with alcohol abuse but increasingly common among non-drinkers who gain excessive amounts of weight.

This new view of sugar could change the advice that doctors and government health officials give about eating the sweet stuff. Lustig’s hope is that the information is considered as the U.S. Department of Agriculture finalizes its latest Dietary Guidelines, expected by the end of the year, which delineate recommendations for what, and how much of different types of foods and nutrients Americans should eat.

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier Life

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

If your favorite vegetable isn’t in season, grab a frozen bag of it for the same nutritional value.

The editors at AARP have filtered through numerous medical journals and studies to identify the best actions you can take to achieve a longer, fuller life. We know there are no guarantees. But genetics account for just 25 percent of a person’s longevity. The rest is up to you. With this collection of some of the most important longevity findings, you’ll have the road map you need to get to 80, 90, 100 or beyond.

1. Frozen is fine

You can eat a balanced diet even when fresh fruits and vegetables are out of season because frozen can be as good as or even better for life-extending nutrients. British scientists found that fresh fruit can lose nutrients after three days of refrigeration, while frozen fruits don’t suffer the same fate. Another study similarly found that frozen blueberries contained more vitamin C than fresh ones.

2. Cut back on pain pills

Regular use of painkillers such as ibuprofen and naproxen — including over-the-counter brands such as Advil, Motrin and Aleve — may raise your risk of heart attack and stroke by 10 percent, according to a 2014 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel review. (Prescription-strength versions may increase your risk by 20 to 50 percent, even after just a few weeks of use.) Reserve these drugs for severe pain, and use the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time.

3. Please go to bed

Consistently sleeping less than six hours a night nearly doubles your risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a review of 15 studies published in the European Heart Journal. Another study found that consistently sleep-deprived people were 12 percent more likely to die over the 25-year study period than those who got six to eight hours of sleep a night. These tips from the National Sleep Foundation can help ensure that you get good quality shut-eye, even if you’re among the half of people over 60 who have insomnia:

  • Make the room pitch-black dark, and set the thermostat between 60 and 67 degrees.
  • Exercise every day. It doesn’t matter what time of day you work out, just so it doesn’t interfere with your rest.
  • Stick to a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and getting up at the same time each day.
  • Shut down your electronics an hour before retiring, as the light from some devices can stimulate the brain.
  • Replace your mattress if it’s more than 10 years old.

4. But don’t always go right to sleep

Marriage is good for the heart in more ways than one.

5. Get (or stay) hitched

Marriage truly is good for your health — and your longevity. The prestigious Framingham Offspring Study found that married men had a 46 percent lower risk of death than never-married men, in part due to marriage’s well-known impact on heart health. Indeed, a 2014 study by New York University’s Langone Medical Center found that married men and women had a 5 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

6. Ripeness matters

No, you won’t die from eating under-ripe produce, but new research shows that fully ripened fruit has more life-lengthening health benefits. For example, green bananas are low in fiber and high in astringent tannins that can cause constipation. Fully ripened pears and blackberries have more disease-fighting antioxidants. And in watermelon, a deep red color signifies more lycopene, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

7. Don’t sweeten with sugar

A high-sugar diet boosts blood sugar, which in turn plays havoc with your heart by increasing levels of LDL cholesterol while lowering heart-friendly HDL cholesterol, and tripling your risk for fatal cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar a day, and men no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams).

8. Consider extra vitamin D

Vitamin D, a bright byproduct of sunlight, has many health benefits, including a link to longevity. But too much vitamin D increases your risk of dying as much as too little, according to a 2015 Danish study. So you want to get the right amount. Don’t just rely on outdoor time to get extra vitamin D; the rate of skin cancer rises as we age, so it’s important to limit exposure. The smart plan: Ask your doctor if you would benefit from extra D in pill form. University of Copenhagen researchers found that the ideal vitamin D level is more than 50 nanomoles per liter of blood, but less than 100 nmol/L.

9. Go green

If coffee’s not your thing, green tea also has proven longevity cred, likely because it contains powerful antioxidants known as catechins that may help combat diabetes and heart disease. In a large study of more than 40,000 Japanese men and women, drinking five or more cups of green tea a day was associated with a 12 percent decrease in mortality among men and a 23 percent decrease among women.

Taking a break from work and going on a vacation is crucial to your well being.

10. Vacation … or Else

Not taking time off work might, indeed, be deadly. One study of men at high risk for coronary artery disease found that those who failed to take annual vacations were 32 percent more likely to die of a heart attack. And in the long-running Framingham Heart Study, women who vacationed just once every six years were eight times more likely to develop coronary artery disease or have a heart attack than women who vacationed twice a year.

11. Eat whole grains

The average American eats one serving of whole grains daily — and that may be just a single morning slice of toast. But eating three or more servings each day can cut overall death rate by about 20 percent, according to a 2016 study from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Have some oatmeal or brown rice, or get adventurous and go for quinoa, barley, even farro.

12. Spice it up

Eating hot chili peppers may add years to your life. In a 2016 analysis of the dietary habits of more than 16,000 men and women over 23 years, those who reported eating hot peppers reduced their risk of dying by 13 percent. Not a fan of those peppers? Even a little spice can have health benefits. That’s because the body produces endorphins to reduce the heat from the capsaicin in the peppers; those endorphins also reduce pain and inflammation.

13. Drink whole milk

You’ve been told forever to drink low-fat or skim milk, or go for fat-free yogurt. But research published in the journal Circulation in 2016 concluded that those who consumed the most dairy fat had a 50 percent lower risk of developing diabetes, a disease that can shorten your life by eight to 10 years on average.

14. Just add water

Staying adequately hydrated — measured by urine that’s light yellow or straw colored — can also help prolong a healthy life by reducing the risk of bladder and colon cancer and keeping kidneys in tip-top shape. Bonus: It might even help you lose weight. Researchers at the University of Illinois found that those who sipped more H2O ended up eating 68 to 205 fewer calories per day.

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Nick Ferrari

A few cups of java a day might keep the doctor away.

15. Say yes to that extra cup

Coffee does more than help you wake up; it also reduces your risk of stroke, diabetes and some cancers. And in a 2015 study published in the journal Circulation, Harvard researchers discovered that “people who drank three to five cups of coffee per day had about a 15 percent lower [risk of premature] mortality compared to people who didn’t drink coffee,” says coauthor Walter Willett, M.D. Mind you, a cup is 8 ounces, so your 16-ounce Starbucks grande is really two cups by that measure.

16. Live like the Amish

A University of Maryland study found that Amish men live longer than typical Caucasian men in the United States, and both Amish men and women have lower rates of hospitalization. What are the Amish ways? Lots of physical activity, less smoking and drinking, and a supportive social structure involving family and community.

17. End the day’s eating by 9 p.m.

Not only is eating late bad for your waistline — sleeping doesn’t exactly burn lots of calories — it also increases the risk of heart disease by 55 percent for men ages 45 to 82, according to a Harvard study.

18. Eat your veggies

In a study of 73,000 adults, most in their mid to upper 50s, vegetarians were 12 percent less likely than carnivores to have died from any cause during the six-year study period. The 2016 study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that mortality rates were lowest overall for pesco-vegetarians (those who eat fish occasionally), followed by vegans (those who eat no animal products), and lacto-ovo vegetarians (those who eat dairy and eggs).

19. Eat like the Greeks

The Mediterranean diet (remember Byblos Restaurant!), with its reliance on fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish and nuts, is one of the healthiest diets for both overall health and longevity. Harvard researchers, reporting in the BMJ, found that those who followed the diet most closely had longer telomeres, which cap the end of each strand of DNA and protect chromosomes from damage. Even those who only sporadically followed the diet reaped longevity benefits, researchers found.

Nick Ferrari

Cutting your portions helps you cut calories, which aids in weight loss and more.

20. Eat less

If you want to reach 100, put down the fork, says Dan Buettner, who studies longevity hot spots around the world, such as Okinawa, Japan. Buettner found that the oldest Okinawans stop eating when they feel 80 percent full. A National Institutes of Health-funded study similarly found that cutting back calories reduced blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin resistance.

21. Drink less or NONE of alcohol (here’s a trick)

More-than-moderate alcohol consumption (generally, more than one drink a day for women or more than two a day for men) leads to a shorter life span. Here’s one way to cut your intake: Pour red wine into a white-wine glass, which is narrower. Studies by Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab found that people poured 12 percent more into red-wine glasses. You’ll also pour less wine into your glass if it’s sitting on the table, instead of in your hand, says Brian Wansink, the lab’s director.

22. Save your pennies

Money might not make you happier, but it will help you live longer. A 2016 study by Stanford researchers published in JAMA found that people whose income bracket was in the top 1 percent lived nearly 15 years longer than those in the bottom 1 percent. The disparity could be attributed to healthier behaviors in higher-income groups, including less smoking and lower obesity rates, researchers say.

23. Or move to one of these states

If you’re not wealthy, consider moving to California, New York or Vermont, where studies show that low-income people tend to live the longest. Loma Linda, Calif., has the highest longevity thanks to vegetarian Seventh-day Adventists, who live eight to 10 years longer than the rest of us. Nevada, Indiana and Oklahoma have the lowest life expectancy (less than 78 years).

24. Ponder a Ponderosa

Experiencing a sense of awe — such as when viewing the Grand Canyon or listening to Beethoven’s Ninth — may boost the body’s defense system, says research from the University of California, Berkeley. “That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests that the things we do to experience these emotions — a walk in nature, losing oneself in music, beholding art — has a direct influence upon health and life expectancy,” says Dacher Keltner, a psychologist and coauthor of the study.

Owning a dog can help lower stress and boost physical activity.

25. Get a friend with four legs

A few studies on the link between pet ownership and health have found that owning a pet can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, even improve the odds of surviving a heart attack. Now the American Heart Association has weighed in with a report published in the journal Circulation that recommends owning a dog, in particular, for those seeking to reduce their risk of deadly heart disease. Dog owners are more likely to be physically active and are also less vulnerable to the effects of stress, the report says.

26. Find your purpose

Do you wake up looking forward to something? In a 2014 study published in the Lancet, researchers found that those with the highest sense of purpose were 30 percent less likely to die during the 8.5-year study period. In fact, doing something that matters — whether it’s helping your children or interacting in a community of like-minded folks — is correlated with seven extra years of life, according to researchers who study people in “blue zones,” areas of the world where folks live the longest.

27. Embrace your faith

Attending religious services once a week has been shown to add between four and 14 years to life expectancy, according to researchers who study blue zones. Don’t belong to a church? Ask to join a friend at her services, or just drop in at a nearby house of worship; most have an open-door policy.

28. Be food safe

About 3,000 Americans die from food poisoning annually, say the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Even seemingly healthy foods — like sprouts, cantaloupe, berries and raw tuna — can make you sick or even kill you, says the FDA. Your action plan: Keep your kitchen pristine, wash your hands and utensils before and after handling food, separate raw and cooked foods, refrigerate perishable food promptly, and cook food to a safe temperature to kill deadly bacteria.

29. Consider mountain life

People residing at higher altitudes tend to live longer, a study by the University of Colorado and the Harvard School of Global Health revealed. Of the 20 healthiest counties in America, many are in Colorado and Utah. Researchers think lower oxygen levels might cause your body to adapt in ways that strengthen your heart and circulation.

Eating a handful of nuts five times per week can lower your mortality risk from certain diseases.

30. Go nuts

In a European study of adults ages 55 to 69, those who ate 10 grams of nuts daily — 8 almonds or 6 cashews — reduced their risk of death from any health-related cause by 23 percent. As for specific ailments, consuming a handful of nuts at least five times per week lowers the mortality risk for heart disease (by 29 percent), respiratory disease (24 percent) and cancer (11 percent), according to a previous U.S. study. Sorry, peanut butter fans: Spreads didn’t show the same benefits.

31. Keep watching LOL cat videos

Laughter really is the best medicine, helping to reduce stress, boost the immune system, reduce pain and improve blood flow to the brain. In fact, laughter has the same effect on blood vessels as exercise, report researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

32. Get social

Studies show that loneliness increases the risk of early death by 45 percent. It weakens the immune system and raises blood pressure while increasing the risk for heart attacks and stroke. By contrast, people with strong ties to friends and family have as much as a 50 percent lower risk of dying, according to a study in PLOS Medicine. So visit a friend. And don’t discount your online friends. A 2016 study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego found that those who use online interactions don’t completely supplant face-to-face social interaction.

33. Watch your grandkids

While babysitting every day is stressful, regularly watching the grands can lower your risk of dying by a third, according to a 2016 study published in Evolution and Human Behavior. That adds up to an extra five years of life, researchers say. They speculate that caregiving gives grandparents a sense of purpose, and keeps them mentally and physically active.

34. Try to stay out of the hospital

A 2016 Johns Hopkins University study found that some 250,000 patients die each year in hospitals from medical mistakes, such as misdiagnoses, poor practices and conditions, and drug errors. Sometimes the best way to avoid a grave condition is not to enter the system at all.

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Reading gives muscle to your memory.

35. Read more

Sounds like we made it up, but scientific research supports the longevity benefits of reading — newspapers and magazines will do, but books are the best. “As little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read,” said the study’s senior author, Becca R. Levy, a professor of epidemiology at Yale.

36. Read the ‘AARP Bulletin’

Really. This and other smart publications can keep you up to date on health info. Studies have shown that when people are empowered with information to make important medical decisions, it not only enhances their well-being but also improves a treatment’s effectiveness. So keep reading aarp.org/bulletin and aarp.org/health.

37. Monitor yourself

Don’t wait for annual checkups to consider your health. By then, a small problem could have morphed into a life-threatening illness. In one English study, researchers found that less than 60 percent of people who developed unusual symptoms in the previous three months had seen a doctor. Symptoms that might point to cancer include: unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more (this can be an indication of cancers of the esophagus, stomach or lungs); fever; extreme fatigue; changes in bowel or bladder habits; or unusual bleeding. Other unusual symptoms that could signal disease? A patch of rough, dark skin could indicate diabetes, and a strange color on your tongue could signal serious acid-reflux issues.

38. Visit the hardware store

Among the most common causes of “unintentional deaths” are carbon monoxide, radon and lead poisoning, the CDC reports. Make sure there’s a carbon monoxide detector near every bedroom, and be sure to test and replace the batteries every two years. Was your home built before 1978, when lead paint was outlawed? One trip to the store can get you all you need to test for these toxic substances.

39. Practice home fire drills

Just 1 in 3 families have a fire-safety plan, says Robert Cole, president of Community Health Strategies, an injury-prevention education organization based in Pittsford, N.Y. “People underestimate the speed of a fire. Many waste time figuring out what to do, or trying to take belongings with them. Everyone should know what to do and how to get out safely.”

Studies show that female doctors are more effective communicators than male physicians.

40. Find a woman doctor

When Harvard researchers in 2016 analyzed Medicare records documenting more than 1.5 million hospitalizations over four years, they found that patients who received care from a female physician were more likely to survive and less likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. In fact, about 32,000 fewer people would die each year “if male physicians achieved the same outcomes as female physicians,” the researchers said. Previous studies have suggested that female doctors are more likely to follow clinical guidelines and are more effective communicators.

41. Make peace with family

While we often stress about small stuff — the guests are here, and we’re not ready! — it’s the nagging, long-running forms of stress, such as a family dispute, that put your longevity at risk. Chronic stress hastens the cellular deterioration that leads to premature aging and a vast array of serious diseases, according to long-running research from the University of California, San Francisco. This sort of cell death “turns out to be one of the strongest predictors of early diseases of aging and in many studies of early mortality,” says lead researcher Elissa Epel. The remedy: Come to peace with the people in your life. Forgive your family, forgive yourself, put the past behind you — so you can have more life in front of you.

42. Take the stairs — every day

A study by University of Geneva researchers found that taking the stairs instead of the elevators reduced the risk of dying prematurely by 15 percent. What’s more, a daily stair climb shaves six months off your “brain age,” according to researchers at Concordia University who performed MRI scans on 331 people ages 19 to 79. Gray matter shrinks naturally with age, but less so when people stay active.

43. Toss that rug

One of the top risks for falls at home is throw rugs. Those slip-slidey accoutrements send 38,000 older adults to the emergency room each year, according to a 2013 study by the CDC. Banish these rugs from your home, and make sure bath mats have a nonslip bottom.

44. Beware the high-tech dash

Nearly one in five traffic accidents and more than 400,000 crash-related injuries involve a distracted driver, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports. Top distractions, according to a recent Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study, are cellphones. But a less-obvious risk is using the touch screen on your car’s dashboard.

50 ways to live a longer, healthier, happier life

Geber86

Yes, you can go carless and survive.

45. And drive less

In 2014, more than 5,700 older adults were killed and more than 236,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. Per mile traveled, fatal crashes increase noticeably starting at age 70 and are highest among drivers age 85 and older, a highway safety organization says. If you’re feeling unsafe behind the wheel, it might be time to look for alternative transportation.

46. Better yet, walk

What’s the best prescription for a longer life? Exercise. And doctors are literally prescribing it instead of medication. “There is no pill that comes close to what exercise can do,” says Claude Bouchard, director of the human genomics laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana. It benefits your brain, heart, skin, mood and metabolism. Even as little as 10 minutes of brisk walking can help (that’s all it takes to burn off the calories of one chocolate chip cookie). Once you can do 10 minutes, push it to 15. Then 20. Start slow, but just start.

47. Just not in the street

Nearly 5,000 pedestrians are killed annually in the U.S., according to the latest federal figures, and nearly 20 percent of those deaths were among adults age 65 and older. If you walk for your health — and we hope you do — stay safe and consider doing so at the mall, a community health center or a park.

48. And go a little faster

The benefits of a brisk walk are real: A University of Pittsburgh study of adults 65 and older found that those whose usual walking pace exceeded one meter per second lived longer. While researchers say they can’t recommend brisk walking as a panacea for living longer, they did see increased survival in those who picked up the pace over the course of a year.

49. Get fidgety

Never mind what your grade school teachers said; fidgeting is good. A 2016 British study finds that sitting for seven or more hours a day increases your risk of dying by 30 percent — except among active fidgeters, who see no increased risk.

50. Trade in Ol’ Bessie

High-tech safety features have now become standard in new cars. The government mandates that all have airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control — “up there with seat belts and airbags in its life- aving benefits,” says one industry leader — and tire pressure-monitoring systems. Carmakers also offer back-up cameras, self-parking features, blind-spot and lane-departure warnings, and forward-collision warning with auto-braking.

Researchers Find Evidence Fluoride May Affect IQ

by George Citroner

A new study draws attention to potential issues with fluoride consumption.

A new study looks at fluoride exposure in utero and the potential link to IQ.

The 70-year-old public health effortTrusted Source that saw water fluoridation become common in the United States is applauded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Trusted Source as one of the great achievements for public health in the 20th century.

Currently, almost 75 percentTrusted Source of the population use fluoridated water from their local water systems.

“Fluoride is a mineral that readily binds to bones and teeth. It’s typically used in dentistry to promote remineralization of dentinTrusted Source in the outer enamel of teeth,” explained Pamela Den Besten, DDS, MS, professor of orofacial sciences at University of California, San Francisco.

We now take for granted that the addition of fluoride to public drinking water not only prevents tooth decay, but is also basically harmless.

But now early research has brought up the possibility that fluoride could affect IQ levels in children exposed to the chemical in utero.

Prenatal fluoride exposure associated with lower IQ

Researchers studied 512 children in Canada to find that those who were exposed to higher levels of fluoride before birth had significantly lower IQ scores between ages 3 and 4.

The study was published today in JAMA Pediatrics.Trusted Source

For the study, about 2,000 pregnant women from 10 cities across Canada were recruited from the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) program.

The findings suggest that fluoride ingestion during pregnancy, within the normal range of water fluoridation standards, may affect children in utero.

The study concluded that fluoride ingestion during pregnancy should be reduced while additional research is conducted.

“To our knowledge, this study is the first to estimate fluoride exposure in a large birth cohort receiving optimally fluoridated water,” the study authors wrote.

Fluoride safety has long been debated

Information on consumption of tap water and other water-based beverages, like tea and coffee, was obtained from a self-report questionnaire completed by mothers during the first and third trimesters.

“Since the 1950s when water fluoridation began, its safety has been debated. We realized that there were major questions about the safety of fluoride, especially for pregnant women and young children. Decisions about safety need to be based on evidence,” study author Rivka Green, MA, a doctoral student in clinical developmental neuropsychology at York University, told Healthline.

The study found the association of prenatal fluoride exposure with children’s lower IQ scores held up even after accounting for factors like the mother’s education, socioeconomic status, location, and exposure to other toxic metals.

“Short of dosing women, we did everything we could to adjust for the factors that are typically controlled for in these types of studies. We studied an extensive list of other characteristics, like socioeconomic status and city, as well as other exposures, like lead, arsenic, and secondhand smoke, and our results remained,” Green said.

Previous research led by York University researchers had already found that fluoride levels were twice as high for pregnant Canadian women living in cities where public drinking water is fluoridated compared to those in cities where the drinking water isn’t.

“We found that fluoride in drinking water was the major source of exposure for pregnant women living in Canada. Women living in fluoridated communities have two times the amount of fluoride in their urine as women living in non-fluoridated communities,” Christine Till, PhD, an associate professor of psychology in York’s faculty of health and lead author of the study, said in a statement.

Findings agree with previous research

This study adds to what we know from recent research that also found an association between prenatal exposure to fluoride and reduced intelligence.

“Some previous studies showed that higher levels of fluoride were associated with lower IQ scores in children, including another prospective cohort study published in 2017 by the ELEMENT group, which found similar results to ours,” Green said.

“However, our study was the first to look at prenatal exposure in a sample receiving optimally fluoridated water,” she emphasized.

Other potential fluoride issues

According to Besten, who wasn’t involved with the new study, aside from the findings of these studies, consuming more than optimal amounts of fluoride can stain and weaken teeth.

But consuming that much fluoride is unlikely to occur just from drinking tap water.

“The most obvious effect of fluoride is the formation of fluorosed enamel. Fluorosis occurs when excess fluoride is present when the tooth is forming, and this excess fluoride results in hypomineralization [softening and discoloration of tooth enamel], which gives a whiter appearance to fluorosed, as compared to normal, enamel,” Besten said.

She cautions that early research in animal studies have found a potential neurotoxic issue for high levels of fluoride.

They “show that neurotoxicity of fluoride is related to the dose, timing of exposure, and sex of the individual,” Besten said. “More recent epidemiological researchTrusted Source show associations between fluoride and neurotoxicity in humans,” she added.

Decades of use to stop tooth decay

In an emailed statement to Healthline, Dr. Aparna Bole, FAAP, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Environmental Health, points out that community water fluoridation has helped decrease tooth decay for decades, and that this is one study that pointed toward correlation, not causation.

“In most communities, tap water is a healthy and environmentally preferable choice,” Bole told Healthline. “This study is thought provoking, but the fact that results were different for boys and girls make them somewhat difficult to interpret, and fluoride intake in children was not examined.”

Bole points out that the AAP supports community water fluoridation.

“We support the public health sector’s continual evaluation of optimal community water fluoridation, and continue to recommend that children drink optimally fluoridated water,” Bole said.

“In addition, children should use age-appropriate amounts of fluoride toothpaste with adult supervision, and have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth according to the US Preventive Task Force guidelines.”

The bottom line

Recent research finds that prenatal exposure to “optimal” levels of fluoride in drinking water is strongly associated with reduced IQ when those children are between 3 and 4 years old.

This study adds to previous research that also found intelligence negatively affected in this population.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health maintains that children should still drink optimally fluoridated water, use age-appropriate amounts of fluoride toothpaste, and have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth.

We Have the Freedom to Choose / Aging is REVERSED / Friday: Modern Art Museum

Do you sing
in the Sunshine?
Do you laugh
every day?
Do you give away
the things you never
really possessed?
Have you come to know
the rain must fall,
the wind must blow.
.
My Dear Friends,
when
our cup runneth over
with Love for Life –
we are TRULY
alive.

                 YOUR OUTLOOK is vital.

Why should we look
on the bright side of Life?
 Simply because,
we are more likely to survive
and enjoy our brief time
on this Earth.

    Looking on the bright side
helps us to survive threats
to our health
and happiness.

“Associate yourself
with people of good quality,

for it is better to be alone
than in bad company.”
Booker T. Washington

Those of us
with an optimistic outlook
are 30 per cent less likely to require treatment
in a hospital.

My Friend,
Optimism is a choice.
We have the freedom
to choose.

Optimistic people have
better health.
Yes,
Having a positive outlook on Life
helps people live longer.
But importantly,
YOUR OUTLOOK
is vital
to the mental and physical health
of your Child.

Focus on what you can do.

Focusing on what you
and your precious Child
can do,
will ALWAYS
have more positive outcomes.

One of the most powerful lessons
learned from Life,
is NOT to believe
everything you think.
This world is nothing more
than a reflection
of who we are
deep down inside.
.
Our brain
and our body
are Human.
We are,
thank God,
not perfect.

Respect yourself enough
to walk away from anything
that no longer makes you
feel good about you,
helps you to grow
or makes you happy.
Be confident
that no one can drain you
if you do not cooperate
in their negativity.

We attract in our lives
people and events and situations
that mirror
our internal state of Being.
.
To raise our positive energy
focus on the things you Love about yourself,
your Life
and the world around you.

Do so by thinking of someone you Love deeply,
by thinking about things you are really
passionate about.

              WE HAVE the Freedom.

A recent study revealed
that women who are optimistic
are less likely to die
from cancer, heart disease, stroke,
infection, and several other
major causes of death.
.
Studies have also found
people who are less stressed
have lower cholesterol levels,
are less prone to inflammation,
have a better immune response
and higher levels of antioxidants in the blood.
.
And,
there is a growing body of evidence
that strongly suggests that mood
has a major impact
on a your chance of recovery
from any physical ailment.

What we can call
positivity ,
along with a healthy diet and exercise
will contribute
to our well being
and happiness
in Life.

Aging is REVERSED in men
using a cocktail of growth hormones and diabetes drugs
in a study that saw the test group
shed 2.5 biological years.

  • Researchers at UCLA  used a trio of common drugs to restore the thymus
  • The gland specializes immune cells that fight cancer and infection and degrades with age
  • Growth hormone combined with two diabetes drugs made the thymus regenerate
  • After a year on the drug cocktail the nine white men involved were an average of 2.5 years biologically younger than they had been at the study’s start

A cocktail of three common drugs appeared to not only slow aging but to reverse it in a small new study published in Nature on Thursday.

Nine people were given a growth hormone and two diabetes drugs for a year as part of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), trial.

By the end of their cycles on the medications, the study participants had, biologically aged 2.5 yearsin reverse.

At first blush it looks like a revelation for human health and life expectancy – but the small group of participants were all white men and there was no control group to compare the findings to, drawing some skepticism from experts.

New research suggests that a three-drug cocktail could reverse biological aging.

To many, immortality is the Holy Grail of futurism and medicine.

And even if you don’t idealize the notion of living forever, with aging comes disease and the body’s degradation, so evading the damage that time does to us could mean living a healthier life as well as a longer one.

Much more critical to the length and quality of our lives than our numerical age or the lines on our faces is how our body’s are changing at the cellular and molecular levels.

Scientists gauge biological aging by something called the ‘epigenetic clock.’ One method of doing so was developed by co-author of the new study, UCLA’s Dr Steve Horvath.

This age assessment looks at changes to how DNA is expressed. As we age, chemical tags called methyls start to hang on to molecules of DNA.

Theses pesky changes don’t alter the sequence of the DNA, but they can disrupt  the way a section of the genetic code gets turned on and off or issues instructions to biological structures.

More methyls are added to DNA over time, so it becomes more predisposed to disruption, and we become more predisposed to aging itself as well as cancer.

Many factors influence this process, called methylation, and can make our biological clocks race ahead of or trail behind our age in years.

The process effects every organ and tissue in the body – including a vital gland called the thymus.

The thymus functions like finishing school for the white blood cells that drive much of the immune system.

White blood cells are made within the bone marrow, but it’s in the thymus where they enter their final forms, becoming T cells that keep infections and cancer at bay.

The thymus starts to degrade with age and as levels of human growth hormone fall.

Previous research in animals suggested that giving people supplemental growth hormone might protect and restore the thymus.

So Dr Horvath’s collaborator, immunologist and co-founder of Intervene Immune, Dr Gregory Fahy, recruited nine white men between the ages of 51 and 65 to take the growth hormone DHEA.

Dr Fahy had actually experimented with the possibility of using DHEA to rejuvenate the thymus – on himself, in the 1990s.

Since unusually high levels of DHEA may trigger diabetes, the men in the trial were also given the two diabetes drugs.

Over the course of the year they were involved in the study, their thymus tissue was regularly tested.

By the end of the trial, seven of the participants thymuses had shed disruptive fat from the gland, and healthy thymus tissue had regrown in its place.

Dr Horvath happened to ask if he could analyze the mens’ epigenetic markers of age.

Remarkably, all 10 participants had fewer methyl tags at the end of the study than they had in the beginning.

Biologically speaking, they appeared to have gotten 2.5 years younger.

‘I’d expected to see slowing down of the clock, but not a reversal’ Dr Horvath told Nature.

‘That felt kind of futuristic.’

But, of course, there was no control group whose thymuses and epigenetic markers of age were being compared, and the sample was all white men, so it’s far from proof that aging can be reversed.

It is, however a promising finding for follow-up research.

New Study:
Autism Linked to Environment

Research links soaring incidence of the mysterious neurological disorder to fetal and infant exposure to pesticides, viruses, household chemicals.
by
Marla Cone in Scientific American

California’s sevenfold increase in autism cannot be explained by changes in doctors’ diagnoses and most likely is due to environmental exposures, University of California scientists reported Thursday.

The scientists who authored the new study advocate a nationwide shift in autism research to focus on potential factors in the environment that babies and fetuses are exposed to, including pesticides, viruses and chemicals in household products.

“It’s time to start looking for the environmental culprits responsible for the remarkable increase in the rate of autism in California,” said Irva Hertz-Picciotto, an epidemiology professor at University of California, Davis who led the study.

Throughout the nation, the numbers of autistic children have increased dramatically over the past 15 years. Autistic children have problems communicating and interacting socially; the symptoms usually are evident by the time the child is a toddler.

More than 3,000 new cases of autism were reported in California in 2006, compared with 205 in 1990. In 1990, 6.2 of every 10,000 children born in the state were diagnosed with autism by the age of five, compared with 42.5 in 10,000 born in 2001, according to the study, published in the Journal Epidemiology. The numbers have continued to rise since then.

To nail down the causes, scientists must unravel a mystery: What in the environment has changed since the early 1990s that could account for such an enormous rise in the brain disorder?

For years, many medical officials have suspected that the trend is artificial – due to changes in diagnoses or migration patterns rather than a real rise in the disorder.

But the new study concludes that those factors cannot explain most of the increase in autism.

Hertz-Picciotto and Lora Delwiche of the UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences analyzed 17 years of state data that tracks developmental disabilities, and used birth records and Census Bureau data to calculate the rate of autism and age of diagnosis.

The results: Migration to the state had no effect. And changes in how and when doctors diagnose the disorder and when state officials report it can explain less than half of the increase.

Dr. Bernard Weiss, a professor of environmental medicine and pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center who was not involved in the new research, said the autism rate reported in the study “seems astonishing.” He agreed that environmental causes should be getting more attention.

Can only wither and die
In the emptiness of space,
In the loneliness of time,
If we do nothing.
Nothingness
Is a destroyer of worlds.

Gather the flowers of love
From the Garden
Of life that remains,
And fill the void
Felt inside.

Yes, there are many
Shattered and empty hearts,
Created by simply

Never knowing,
Never being told,
They were truly loved.

All around us

Are the tattered remains
Of so many fragile hearts,
Broken by the waters
Of so many tears
That have flowed,
Standing at the foot
Of so many graves.

sky 3

Ever late,
They could have loved
Those left behind
With the flowers of their Spring,
With the joyful tears
Of Life and Love.

In sharing your time,
And the hidden treasures of your joy
With your precious children,
You create such beautiful moments together,
That this time will become worth
All that is of any real value
To you and them
In this world.

Do not wait,
For the time shall never be right,
It will escape you!
Time creates its own illusions,
Shattering the hourglass,
That by pretense of its being,
Feigns to measure
That which does not exist
.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERAYes,
Tomorrow will always be too late.

So please stop.
Make the world as you imagine it to be,
Go away.
Place your loving arms around the real world,
Your child of so many dreams.
Fill the heart
Of such longing and desire
With truth,
With your deep and abiding Love,
Love everlasting,
The Love that flows through you
By the Grace of God above.

And after all the deeply heartfelt feelings,
Of knowing, surely knowing,
That your child is all that matters
In this world to you,

That you are in Love,
In Love with the dream come true,
The Gift of your child,
The beautiful Blessing of birth,
Of Life and Love renewed,

There will blossom,
Like a flower in the wind,
Such a depth
Of unbelievably beautiful emotion,
That you will rediscover the joy in life,
And the bountiful, beautiful Love
That has been ever so
Quietly,

Patiently,
Waiting,

Just for you.

SMART METERS? – from our friends at NaturalNews.com. read more

When Thomas Edison began wiring New York City with a direct current electricity distribution system in the 1880s, he gave humankind the magic of electric light, heat, and power; in the process, though, he inadvertently opened a Pandora’s Box of unimaginable illness and death.

Smart meters send and receive wireless RF/MW signals throughout homes and businesses. These smart meter RF/MW levels are far higher than those already reported to cause health risks.

Compliance is not safety, since the existing FCC safety limits are under challenge, and have already been called ‘insufficient to protect public health’ by some federal agencies.

Dirty Electricity tells the story of Dr. Samuel Milham, the scientist who first alerted the world about the frightening link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic pollution, and human disease. Milham takes readers through his early years and education, following the twisting path that led to his discovery that most of the twentieth century diseases of civilization, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and suicide, are caused by electromagnetic field exposure.

Wyatt is the dog whisperer.

Dr. Milham warns that because of the recent proliferation of radio frequency radiation from cell phones and towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-max systems, broadband internet over power lines, and personal electronic equipment, we may be facing a looming epidemic of morbidity and mortality. In Dirty Electricity, he reveals the steps we must take, personally and as a society, to coexist with this marvelous but dangerous technology.

Daniel Hirsch, a lecturer and expert in nuclear policy at University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), has written a report that reveals smart meters emit 160 times more cumulative whole body exposure than cell phones.

Dr. Magda Havas, associate professor and researcher at Trent University, has studied dirty electricity since 2003.
Some of her findings when dirty electricity is removed:
• Improvement in the symptoms associated with MS
• Diabetic’s blood sugars stabilized
• Decreased breast cancer risk
• Body’s efficient use of calcium restored
• Appropriate melatonin distribution returned, improving sleep patterns
.
Dr. Milham’s findings led him to contact higher-ups in the military and the government, with no response. This prompted him to author his book. Dr. Milham’s work found correlations between communities using little or no electricity and those using dirty electricity. The communities exposed to dirty electricity had a much higher incidence of many chronic diseases and other health afflictions. How does this happen? The body is an electrical being. Every cell, tissue, and organ transmits information through tiny electrical currents which are disturbed by these high frequency fields, setting the body up for disease. When suffering from exposure to dirty electricity the symptoms are wide ranging and diverse. These symptoms may manifest through:
• The skin
• Sleep disturbances
• Muscle and joint pain
• Physical and mental exhaustion
• Migraines
• Light headedness
• Nausea
• Loss of cognitive function
• Irritability
• Anxiety
• Muscle spasms
• Numbness and tingling
• Pain in the lower extremities
• High temperature

The Creation of Dirty Electricity

An example of how dirty electricity is created stems from how cell phone towers utilize energy. The towers operate on direct current. However, the electrical current supplied to the tower is in the form of an alternating current; therefore, the supply needs to be changed or converted. This is accomplished using an inverter. Inverters interrupt the alternating current and are a source of dirty electricity. This dirty electricity is put back into the power supply lines, which in turn, can enter a building through their electrical wiring.

Dirty electricity also affects electronic equipment.

Exposure in the average home comes from:

• Cell phone chargers

• Computers

• Office equipment

• Television sets

• Dimmer switches

• Wireless technologies

• Energy saving devices

• Electrical wiring in walls

• Candescent fluorescent light bulbs

Avoiding Exposure (Here is where you can take notes.)

• Change all CFLs to candescent or LED bulbs

• Keep a good distance away from wiring and other sources of dirty electricity

• Limit the use of “dirty electricity appliances”

• Replace unsafe electrical devices with safer alternatives

• Purchase a GS meter and, filter out electromagnetic pollution as necessary with GS filters

Dirty electricity is everywhere. Undiagnosable illness can be a result of exposure to this source of electromagnetic pollution. Implementing these changes may eliminate symptoms, thus eliminating illness. Limiting or avoiding exposure to dirty electricity is beneficial for everyone, avoiding sickness in the first place.

By the way, there are two ways you can shield yourself and your family; you can either use an absorbent shield or a reflector shield. The absorbent shield absorbs RF radiation and the reflector shield deflects the RF radiation away from your home. Whichever you choose, you will need to install it between your home and the meter. read more

We have increased our average life span more than 30 years since 1900! Today, however, we are now decreasing our average lifespan. I wonder why? OK. Now you can go back and read previous weblogs and read the above. Do you think technology has anything to do with the recent decline?

VOTE: Saffy for President (Hey, everything else has gone to the dogs!) She promises not to read any of the bills either and to veto all of them. She will trim the Federal Budget down to zero. Now that’s a conservative! Only ten percent of Americans approved of the job Congress was doing recently, while 87 percent disapproved. Saffy can roam the halls of the White House doing nothing but sniffing for treats (you know, bribes) and do better than that. Don’t think there is no hope, other dogs have been elected to office.  read more

Secondhand Smoke Kills 42,000 Nonsmokers a Year in the U.S.
as reported by Christopher Wanjek in Live Science.

How many Americans die from smoking without even lighting up a cigarette? More than 42,000 people a year, including 900 infants, according to a new, thorough analysis of secondhand smoke deaths by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. read more

According to the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report, there have been more than 20 million smoking-related deaths in the United States since 1964; 2.5 million of those deaths were among non-smokers who died from exposure to secondhand smoke. read more

“There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets,” according to veterinarian Carolynn MacAllister of Oklahoma State University. “Secondhand smoke has been associated with oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancer in dogs, as well as lung cancer in birds.” read more

Adolescents are already at risk for hearing loss from loud music and concerts venues, but a new study published in the July issue of Archives of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery found that teens exposed to second-hand smoke have a two-fold increase in sensorineural hearing loss.

And from the Mayo Clinic: Secondhand smoke causes or contributes to various health problems, including heart disease, lung disease and various types of cancer. read more

These are not numbers, my friends. These are our children. Exposing you or your children to second hand smoke is not putting up with an inconvenience, it is DEADLY. If someone is so inconsiderate and stupid that they light up in front of you and your children, please just leave. And stay out of their presence. Yes, YOU must leave because tobacco is so addictive that other lives become inconsequential to the addict. Your life, and the precious lives of your children, depend upon using good judgment and leaving a toxic environment.

And please, please remember, smokers are also influencing your children in a negative and very DEADLY way. And death is not the only consequence. The painful suffering becomes incomprehensible. Watching your children slowly expire is not what you want to experience, as you sit helplessly by their side and pray for an early and merciful death, which will not come.
