Inside the world’s safest house

Tucked in an unassuming neighborhood in a district two miles southwest of the UC Berkeley campus, the “world’s safest” house stands boldly. And so does Eugene Tssui, a Cal alumnus and the house’s architect. In the past 20 years, the pair has challenged conventional wisdom and defied architecture’s status quo. Buying a small plot near a university built atop the Hayward Fault, in a state renowned for its earthquakes, Tssui seized the challenge to build a secure house for his elderly parents. His plan? Emulate the hardiness of a microscopic water bug.

The neighborhood fortress

From the street, the water bug likeness is uncanny. Amid a blanket of dense and colorful foliage, the rough-hewn exterior soars upward. Walls are striped with wrinkles and pockmarked with dinosaurian ridges. According to Tssui, every form has a function. The ridges each contain a black plastic tube that lets hot air flow around the house. The wrinkles magnify the effect. In the case of a fire, the striated surface would carry the heat up, out and away.

“It’s completely fireproof,” Tssui explained.

But that’s not all. The massive sailfish-like fin towering over the entrance doubles as a rain cowl and a wind breaker. Water and gusts of wind are directed away from the windows and doors (preventing indoor flooding). Though California hurricanes are rare, the house is prepared for the worst.

Tssui paid careful attention to sourcing the best building materials. The house’s structure is made of Rastra, a special concrete infused with compressed, recycled coffee cups. Rastra’s benefits are numerous, including fire resistance, flooding resistance, mildew resistance, termite resistance and noise reduction. In fact, Rastra’s sound insulation reduces sound levels by 50 dB or, in Tssui’s terms, “the difference between a jet roar and normal speech.” As for earthquakes, the house’s cavernous interior is supported by Structo-lite, a super strong plaster. Under stress, Structo-lite bends, flexes and adjusts. When the world is shaking, the house comes alive and survives.

“It goes beyond the definition of safety itself,” Tssui said. “A safe building is (by conventional standards) a heavy, rigid and monolithic building. But in nature, the strongest things are lightweight, flexible and unified. (This house) is designed as nature would design for safety. I’m absolutely sure it’s the safest thing that could be built for this disaster-prone area.”

Onlookers agree. From “most indestructible” to “disaster-proof,” the house’s accolades have held up to its miniature namesake: the Tardigrade, a beetle-like, extremophile creature. In 2007, the tiny Tardigrade became the first animal to survive outer space. In both form and function, Tssui’s meticulous translation of the little survivor’s body features into practical building designs has succeeded beyond the architect’s expectation. Recently, he replaced his house’s former, more mysterious designation, “Ojo del Sol,” with a more direct “Tardigrade House.” In spite of his best efforts, the public has been slow to catch on. ­

“Its seems to the general populace that it looks like a giant fish,” Tssui says with a shrug.

Twenty years ago, cynics thought the house would attract prostitution and drug trafficking. Over time, locals have come to call it “the Fish House near San Pablo Park.”  Now, this too may change. Originally built as his parent’s private residence, Tssui has partnered with Airbnb to rent the house to Bay Area travelers as short-term lodging. Now empty, Tardigrade House’s interior design is a striking contrast to its ashen exterior. Inside is a secret, otherworldly place with its own artistic bravado.

Swollen with sunshine

Entering the house is its own story. A flagstone path meanders from the sidewalk to the front door. The path descends in a slope, leading one into the jaws of the house. Tssui explains that he is trying to draw people into nature. At the same time, he adds, he has made the entire residence wheelchair accessible. Form, he reminds, always has a function.

The massive fin above the entrance casts a deep shadow inside the house, an altogether discrete and disorienting darkness. Through the still meandering entryway, the shadows vanish to reveal an atrium swollen with sunshine. Light filtered through a massive glass ceiling acts as the primary light source for the house. For Tssui, sustainability was key. Along with lighting, Tssui’s interior structure has made insulation and ventilation maintenance worry-free. Indoor temperatures never fluctuate.

“Year-round, you could wear shorts and a t-shirt with no heating,” he explains. “There are no fans either. And no air conditioning. (The house) is a great prototype for a zero-energy building , although it does require energy for ovens. But for heating and ventilation? Zero.”  To prove his point, he takes a sniff. “See? Mustiness does not exist.”

For an architect with a long career, reception for energy-efficient housing is a social development that is relatively new.

“LEED and energy conservation … none of that was talked about 20 years ago,” he admits. “This (house) is a success given today’s ecological goals and a pioneering effort in that. I am really pleased how everything turned out.”

The living room lies beneath the skylight. Sitting cushions flank a suspended wooden table. Hanging from the ceiling, like strings from an enormous puppet show, steel cables provide support to the atrium.

Each cable is anchored to a section of a massive spiral ramp. In the event of an earthquake, the cables absorb stress from the ramp and reinforce the entire house. Sound familiar? The mechanics were borrowed from the Bay Area’s most enduring icon: the Golden Gate Bridge.

The spiral ramp — also wheelchair accessible — provides access to the residence’s second-story living quarters. Along the path, the interior walls are riddled with orbs of stucco and inter-coiling, tendril-like carvings. Halfway up the ramp, a hemispherical window, like an enormous eyeball, bulges out. Like a silent guardian, Tardigrade House keeps watch over the Berkeley skyline.

In fact, every window in the house is circular. Shape, an often-overlooked component in window design, can be the deciding factor leading to irreparable property damage.  According to Tssui, “One of the things commonly seen after an earthquake is cracks on the windows. This is because square windows cannot take strain and bunches stress at the corners. For (my) windows, forces are taken tangentially around the circles, so there is absolutely no cracking.”  Referring to the window’s submersible semblance, he, for good measure, adds, ” There is no reference to Jules Verne.”

On the second floor, bedrooms are decorated with maritime motifs. Shelves built into the walls have rounded, rippled edges. Carvings of spirals and parabolas crisscross. Squint. Some of the walls contain mica chips. Squint again. They glisten like starlight.

A new dimension of living

Architecture’s many episodes of history, from ancient Greek to art deco, bear little resemblance to the Tardigrade House. For Tssui, today’s challenges must be solved by 21st-century solutions.

“Architects and architecture are frozen in the past,” he said. “But past architecture has not even answered the problems of the past — like disaster situations. Our expectations of architecture (should be) to come up with new answers to very old problems.”

And they must also address quite a few new problems. While the house is prepared to confront short-term natural disasters, it doubles in being eco-friendly and energy-efficient. In a voice bordering on prophetic, Tssui adamantly describes the danger of global warming and environmental pollution.

“We are entering into what we call the ‘era of reckoning’,” he said. “All the mistakes we have created in the past we have to figure out and resolve. We have to take care of these mistakes. The last generation has turned Earth into a garbage dump, and we have to fix this. ”

At 58 years old — or “58 years young,” as Tssui jokes — the architect is remarkably future-conscious. By applying the  principles of modern life science to an ancient profession, Tssui pioneers a new family of architecture. He even has a name for it: the “Biologic Movement.”

“When I first designed this house, I asked, “How would nature design the house with these requirements?’ If you think how nature thinks, you are guaranteed not to destroy the planet.”

Scientists Achieve Direct Counterfactual Quantum Communication For The First Time

Quantum communication is a strange beast, but one of the weirdest proposed forms of it is called counterfactual communication – a type of quantum communication where no particles travel between two recipients.

Theoretical physicists have long proposed that such a form of communication would be possible, but now, for the first time, researchers have been able to experimentally achieve it – transferring a black and white bitmap image from one location to another without sending any physical particles.

If that sounds a little too out-there for you, don’t worry, this is quantum mechanics, after all. It’s meant to be complicated. But once you break it down, counterfactual quantum communication actually isn’t as bizarre as it sounds.
First up, let’s talk about how this differs from regular quantum communication, also known as quantum teleportation, because isn’t that also a form of particle-less information transfer?

Well, not quite. Regular quantum teleportation is based on the principle of entanglement – two particles that become inextricably linked so that whatever happens to one will automatically affect the other, no matter how far apart they are.

This is what Einstein referred to as “spooky action at a distance“, and scientists have already used it to send messages over vast distances.

But that form of quantum teleportation still relies on particle transmission in some form or another. The two particles usually need to be together when they’re entangled before being sent to the people on either end of the message (so, they start in one place, and need to be transmitted to another before communication can occur between them).

Alternatively, particles can be entangled at a distance, but it usually requires another particle, such as photons (particles of light), to travel between the two.
Direct counterfactual quantum communication on the other hands relies on something other than quantum entanglement. Instead, it uses a phenomenon called the quantum Zeno effect.

Very simply, the quantum Zeno effect occurs when an unstable quantum system is repeatedly measured.

In the quantum world, whenever you look at a system, or measure it, the system changes. And in this case, unstable particles can never decay while they’re being measured (just like the proverbial watched kettle that will never boil), so the quantum Zeno effect creates a system that’s effectively frozen with a very high probability.

Counterfactual quantum communication is based on this quantum Zeno effect, and is defined as the transfer of a quantum state from one site to another without any quantum or classical particle being transmitted between them.

This requires a quantum channel to run between two sites, which means there’s always a small probability that a quantum particle will cross the channel. If that happens, the system is discarded and a new one is set up.

To set up such a complex system, researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China placed two single-photon detectors in the output ports of the last of an array of beam splitters.
Because of the quantum Zeno effect, the system is frozen in a certain state, so it’s possible to predict which of the detectors would ‘click’ whenever photons passed through. A series of nested interferometers measure the state of the system to make sure it doesn’t change.

It works based on the fact that, in the quantum world, all light particles can be fully described by wave functions, rather than as particles. So by embedding messages in light the researchers were able to transmit this message without ever directly sending a particle.

The team explains that the basic idea for this set up came from holography technology.
“In the 1940s, a new imaging technique – holography – was developed to record not only light intensity but also the phase of light,” the researchers write in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“One may then pose the question: Can the phase of light itself be used for imaging? The answer is yes.”

The basic idea is this – someone wants to send an image to Alice using only light (which acts as a wave, not a particle, in the quantum realm).

Alice transfers a single photon to the nested interferometer, where it can be detected by three single-photon detectors: D₀, D₁, and D_f.

If D₀ or D₁ ‘click’, Alice can conclude a logic result of one or zero. If D_f clicks, the result is considered inconclusive.
As Christopher Packham explains for Phys.org:

“After the communication of all bits, the researchers were able to reassemble the image – a monochrome bitmap of a Chinese knot. Black pixels were defined as logic 0, while white pixels were defined as logic 1 …

In the experiment, the phase of light itself became the carrier of information, and the intensity of the light was irrelevant to the experiment.”

Not only is this a big step forward for quantum communication, the team explains it’s technology that could also be used for imaging sensitive ancient artefacts that couldn’t survive direct light shined on them.
The results will now need to be verified by external researchers to make sure what the researchers saw was a true example of counterfactual quantum communication.

Either way, it’s a pretty cool demonstration of just how bizarre and unexplored the quantum world is.

God gave us proof of his existence – and His Love – in the Bible. Yes, Faith is required, but He helps anyone who asks with that, and gives us his Living Word, besides.

 

A little proof:

 

1. Job 38:7 references the fact that the stars “sing,” which was unknown at the time the Bible was written. Scientists now know that the stars sing at a frequency that the Human ear cannot pick up.

 

2. Job 38:31-32 In these verses God is telling Job the things he can, and does, do, by providing examples:    – “Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades…” Scientists now know that Pleiades is a group of 250 stars bound together by by mutual gravitational attraction, traveling together in the same direction. -“…or loose the bands of Orion?…” Modern instruments showed scientists and astronomers that the 3 star “belt” of *Orion is, over the course of thousands of years, drifting slowly apart, and will one day no longer be aligned. “Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season?” Mazzaroth is the hebrew word for “constellations,” which were made by God for “signs” and “seasons,” because God knew that Humans would use the accuracy of the night sky to measure time and distance.“

 

“Or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?” Scientists discovered that Arcturus, which appears to the unaided eye to be a single star, is actually one star with 52 additional stars (or sons) connected directionally, and traveling as if a hand guided them through the Heavens. This group travels so fast, breaking all the rules of physics, that scientists call them a “law unto themselves.”

3. Job 38:30  “The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.” Did you know that 3 quarters of earth’s water is locked underground in a layer of ice and rock? Because scientists only discovered that recently, in spite of the Bible recording this fact thousands of years ago.

 

4. In Revelation 21:19 The 12 foundation stones, or gems, of New Jerusalem are listed, and every one is anisotropic. That means they produce a rainbow-colored array when scientists hit them with polarized (pure) light. Isotropic gems (like diamonds), however, only look black under the same light. Out of the 28 stones generally regarded as gems, only 16 of them are anistropic – the chance of randomly selecting those 12 gems in Revelation are 1 in a 1000. “…and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.” Rev. 4:3 5.

5. Genesis 2:7 says God formed men from the dust of the ground. Researchers at NASA’s Ames research center confirmed that every element in man can be found in the soil.

 

6. Genesis 17:12 commands specifically that male babies be circumcised on the 8th day. Doctors now know that for the first 7 days of life, an infant’s blood will not clot properly, but on the 8th day their prothrombin levels are elevated above one hundred percent of normal, and is the ONLY day in a male’s life that this will be the case. It is literally the ideal day to heal from the procedure.

7. Numerous verses in the Bible direct God’s people to wash their hands in RUNNING water, to quarantine sick individuals and have them wear a face covering (mask), and disinfect their clothing. He directed his people to bury their bodily wastes away from camp, throw away clay pots that touched dead things (clay pots can absorb pathogens), avoid unclean animals (the eating of which caused diseases. Ex. monkeys caused AIDS, rodents the plague, pigs the flu and tapeworms, and bats the covid virus), and never to eat animals that died of natural causes. This is all before the existence of germs was even heard of! During the time it was written, Human and animal feces were used as a common cure-all for diseases, and lizard blood and dead mice were used in healing ointments. Yet the Bible was teaching practices far ahead of its time and contrary to the popular “medicine” in use.

8. Amos 9:6 details how God calls forth the waters of the sea and pours them out again on the earth. Yet the water cycle of evaporation, vapor rising and becoming clouds, falling, and making its way back to the ocean wasn’t discovered until 300 years ago by Galileo.

 

9. Job 26:7 says the earth is hung upon nothing, and Isaiah 40:22 calls the earth a circle. This was written centuries before these facts were proven, and in fact most of the earth at that time believed that the World was a flat disc that sat upon a turtle’s back, or the shoulders of the God Atlas.

10. The “Father of oceanography” Matthew Maury read the expression “paths of the sea” in Psalms and went out to look for them, leading to the discovery of cold and warm continental currents. The Bible also talks about the existence of deep channels and fountains in the seas, which scientists were only able to discover in the past few hundred years with modern technology.

 

11. Names, places, peoples, and events that were recorded ONLY in the Bible, and speculated by some to be made up, have slowly been corroborated by archeological evidence, especially in the last few hundred years. Read “A Christian’s Guide to Evidence for the Bible” by J. Daniel Hays for 101 instances in which show how extremely historically accurate the Bible really is.

12. Ezekiel 26:4 foretold that the city of Tyre would be destroyed and scraped flat, and made into a desolate place where fishermen would spread their nets on, and that her timber and stones and dust would be laid in the midst of the water. Nebuchadnezzar did conquer the city, and when the inhabitants fled to a nearby island, he destroyed the city in a rage. 250 years later Alexander the Great scraped those same ruins flat, using them to build a causeway in the middle of the sea in order to reach the new island city of Tyre who resisted his attempts to conquer them. This is only one of many detailed prophecies fulfilled in the Bible.

13. There’s a reason “Light” is mentioned so many times in the Bible.

 

Life and Light are often correlated in the Bible, like in Ephesians 5:14 “Wherefore He saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee LIGHT.” Scientists recently discovered that a flash of light sparks at the very moment a Human sperm cell makes contact with an egg. Just like the passage above says, the moment Life comes into existence is marked by Light!

 

What’s even more incredible is the fact that some eggs burn brighter than others, which is a direct indication of their ability to develop into a healthy embryo, a team from Northwestern University found. The brighter the light, the stronger the health. Isaiah 58:8 “Then shall thy LIGHT break forth as the morning, and thine HEALTH shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the Glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.”

Ever wonder why so many Bible verses talk about Godly people’s faces/countenances shining, as in Exodus 34:30 “So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his FACE SHONE, and they were afraid to come near him.” It has been known for many years that all living creatures produce a small amount of light as a result of chemical reactions within their cells, but Japanese scientists captured the first ever images of Human “bioluminescence.” The Light is a thousand times weaker than the Human eye can perceive. In the online journal PLoS ONE, researchers describe how they imaged volunteers’ upper bodies using ultra-sensitive cameras over a period of several days. Their results show that the amount of light emitted follows a 24-hour cycle, at its highest in late afternoon and lowest late at night, and that the brightest light is emitted from the CHEEKS, FOREHEAD and NECK. Strangely, the areas that produced the brightest light did not correspond with the brightest areas on thermal images of the volunteers’ bodies.

that was theorized in 1934, and has been
considered practically impossible until now.

 

In 1934 physicists Breit and Wheeler proposed that two photons could be smashed together to produce an electron and positron – in other words, that Light can be converted into matter, and vice versa. It’s believed that the Big Bang itself – during the first 100 seconds of the creation of the Universe – would’ve played host to these photon-photon collisons. After reading this, doesn’t it seem possible that when God said “Let there be Light,” he made more than just Light, but matter also? He gave form to the massless void with a burst of Light, in mere seconds creating the building blocks of Life.

A proper study of the Bible will reveal so much more proof. Open your KJV Bible, and utilize youtube vids like Walter Veith‘s Total Onslaught Series and The Genesis Conflict, and Imad Awde or Nader Mansour‘s studies. Ellen White‘s The Conflict of the Ages books can be read online for free, as well as Uriah Smith‘s Daniel and the Revelation.

Strategies for Happiness: 7 Steps to Becoming a Happier Person

A popular greeting card attributes this quote to Henry David Thoreau: “Happiness is like a butterfly: the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.”

With all due respect to the author of Walden, that just isn’t so, according to a growing number of psychologists. You can choose to be happy, they say. You can chase down that elusive butterfly and get it to sit on your shoulder. How? In part, by simply making the effort to monitor the workings of your mind.

Research has shown that your talent for happiness is, to a large degree, determined by your genes. Psychology professor David T. Lykken, author of Happiness: Its Nature and Nurture, says that “trying to be happier is like trying to be taller.” We each have a “happiness set point,” he argues, and move away from it only slightly.

And yet, psychologists who study happiness — including Lykken — believe we can pursue happiness. We can do this by thwarting negative emotions such as pessimism, resentment, and anger. And we can foster positive emotions, such as empathy, serenity, and especially gratitude.

Happiness Strategy # 1: Don’t Worry, Choose Happy

The first step, however, is to make a conscious choice to boost your happiness. In his book, The Conquest of Happiness, published in 1930, the philosopher Bertrand Russell had this to say: “Happiness is not, except in very rare cases, something that drops into the mouth, like a ripe fruit. … Happiness must be, for most men and women, an achievement rather than a gift of the gods, and in this achievement, effort, both inward and outward, must play a great part.”

Today, psychologists who study happiness heartily agree. The intention to be happy is the first of The 9 Choices of Happy People listed by authors Rick Foster and Greg Hicks in their book of the same name.

“Intention is the active desire and commitment to be happy,” they write. “It’s the decision to consciously choose attitudes and behaviors that lead to happiness over unhappiness.”

Tom G. Stevens, PhD, titled his book with the bold assertion, You Can Choose to Be Happy. “Choose to make happiness a top goal,” Stevens tells WebMD. “Choose to take advantage of opportunities to learn how to be happy. For example, reprogram your beliefs and values. Learn good self-management skills, good interpersonal skills, and good career-related skills. Choose to be in environments and around people that increase your probability of happiness. The persons who become the happiest and grow the most are those who also make truth and their own personal growth primary values.”

In short, we may be born with a happiness “set point,” as Lykken calls it, but we are not stuck there. Happiness also depends on how we manage our emotions and our relationships with others.

Jon Haidt, author of The Happiness Hypothesis, teaches positive psychology. He actually assigns his students to make themselves happier during the semester.

“They have to say exactly what technique they will use,” says Haidt, a professor at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. “They may choose to be more forgiving or more grateful. They may learn to identify negative thoughts so they can challenge them. For example, when someone crosses you, in your mind you build a case against that person, but that’s very damaging to relationships. So they may learn to shut up their inner lawyer and stop building these cases against people.”

Once you’ve decided to be happier, you can choose strategies for achieving happiness. Psychologists who study happiness tend to agree on ones like these.

Happiness Strategy #2: Cultivate Gratitude

In his book, Authentic Happiness, University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman encourages readers to perform a daily “gratitude exercise.” It involves listing a few things that make them grateful. This shifts people away from bitterness and despair, he says, and promotes happiness.

Happiness Strategy #3: Foster Forgiveness

Holding a grudge and nursing grievances can affect physical as well as mental health, according to a rapidly growing body of research. One way to curtail these kinds of feelings is to foster forgiveness. This reduces the power of bad events to create bitterness and resentment, say Michael McCullough and Robert Emmons, happiness researchers who edited The Psychology of Happiness.

In his book, Five Steps to Forgiveness, clinical psychologist Everett Worthington Jr. offers a 5-step process he calls REACH. First, recall the hurt. Then empathize and try to understand the act from the perpetrator’s point of view. Be altruistic by recalling a time in your life when you were forgiven. Commit to putting your forgiveness into words. You can do this either in a letter to the person you’re forgiving or in your journal. Finally, try to hold on to the forgiveness. Don’t dwell on your anger, hurt, and desire for vengeance.

The alternative to forgiveness is mulling over a transgression. This is a form of chronic stress, says Worthington.

“Rumination is the mental health bad boy,” Worthington tells WebMD. “It’s associated with almost everything bad in the mental health field — obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety — probably hives, too.”

Happiness Strategy #4: Counteract Negative Thoughts and Feelings

As Jon Haidt puts it, improve your mental hygiene. In The Happiness Hypothesis, Haidt compares the mind to a man riding an elephant. The elephant represents the powerful thoughts and feelings — mostly unconscious — that drive your behavior. The man, although much weaker, can exert control over the elephant, just as you can exert control over negative thoughts and feelings.

“The key is a commitment to doing the things necessary to retrain the elephant,” Haidt says. “And the evidence suggests there’s a lot you can do. It just takes work.”

For example, you can practice meditation, rhythmic breathing, yoga, or relaxation techniques to quell anxiety and promote serenity. You can learn to recognize and challenge thoughts you have about being inadequate and helpless.

“If you learn techniques for identifying negative thoughts, then it’s easier to challenge them,” Haidt said. “Sometimes just reading David Burns‘ book, Feeling Good, can have a positive effect.”

Happiness Strategy #5: Remember, Money Can’t Buy Happiness

Research shows that once income climbs above the poverty level, more money brings very little extra happiness. Yet, “we keep assuming that because things aren’t bringing us happiness, they’re the wrong things, rather than recognizing that the pursuit itself is futile,” writes Daniel Gilbert in his book, Stumbling on Happiness. “Regardless of what we achieve in the pursuit of stuff, it’s never going to bring about an enduring state of happiness.”

Happiness Strategy #6: Foster Friendship

There are few better antidotes to unhappiness than close friendships with people who care about you, says David G. Myers, author of The Pursuit of Happiness. One Australian study found that people over 70 who had the strongest network of friends lived much longer.

“Sadly, our increasingly individualistic society suffers from impoverished social connections, which some psychologists believe is a cause of today’s epidemic levels of depression,” Myers writes. “The social ties that bind also provide support in difficult times.”

Happiness Strategy #7: Engage in Meaningful Activities

People are seldom happier, says psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, than when they’re in the “flow.” This is a state in which your mind becomes thoroughly absorbed in a meaningful task that challenges your abilities. Yet, he has found that the most common leisure time activity — watching TV — produces some of the lowest levels of happiness.

To get more out of life, we need to put more into it, says Csikszentmihalyi. “Active leisure that helps a person grow does not come easily,” he writes in Finding Flow. “Each of the flow-producing activities requires an initial investment of attention before it begins to be enjoyable.”

So it turns out that happiness can be a matter of choice — not just luck. Some people are lucky enough to possess genes that foster happiness. However, certain thought patterns and interpersonal skills definitely help people become an “epicure of experience,” says David Lykken, whose name, in Norwegian, means “the happiness.”
