The Sunshine Vitamin that ‘D’elivers on Cardio Health

Summary:
Free from the sun, vitamin D delivers a natural source for one of the hormones essential to our bodies, especially the bones. But when you’re down on this essential nutrient, it’s not only your bones that could suffer, but also your cardio health, according to new research.
Free from the sun, vitamin D delivers a natural source for one of the hormones essential to our bodies, especially the bones. But when you’re down on this essential nutrient, it’s not only your bones that could suffer, but also your cardio health, according to new research from the University of South Australia.

In the first study of its kind, researchers from the UniSA’s Australian Centre for Precision Health at SAHMRI have identified genetic evidence for a role of vitamin D deficiency in causing cardiovascular disease.

The study, which is published in European Heart Journal today, shows that people with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to suffer from heart disease and higher blood pressure, than those with normal levels of vitamin D*. For participants with the lowest concentrations the risk of heart disease was more than double that seen for those with sufficient concentrations.

Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives per year. In Australia, CVD accounts for one in four deaths and costs the Australian economy five billion dollars each year, more than any other disease.

Low concentrations of vitamin D are common in many parts of the world, with data from the UK Biobank showing that 55 per cent of participants have low levels of vitamin D (<50 nmol/L) and 13 per cent have severe deficiency (<25 nmol/L).

Low levels of vitamin D are recorded by an estimated 23 per cent of people in Australia, 24 per cent of people in the US, and 37 per cent of people in Canada.

Chief investigator, UniSA’s Prof Elina Hyppönen says appreciating the role of vitamin D deficiency for heart health could help reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease.

“Severe deficiency is relatively rare, but in settings where this does occur it is very important to be proactive and avoid negative effects on the heart. For example, deficiency can be a problem for people living in residential care who may have limited exposure to sun,” Prof Hyppönen says.

We can also get vitamin D from food, including oily fish, eggs and fortified foods and drinks. This said, food is unfortunately a relatively poor source of vitamin D, and even an otherwise healthy diet does not typically contain enough.

“If we don’t get any vitamin D through the sun, this is one of the rare nutrients for which we sometimes need to take a daily supplement to keep up with the requirements.

“Understanding the connection between low levels of vitamin D and CVD is especially important, given the global prevalence of this deadly condition.

“Our results are exciting as they suggest that if we can raise levels of vitamin D within norms, we should also affect rates of CVD. In our study population, by increasing vitamin D-deficient individuals to levels of at least 50 nmol/L, we estimate that 4.4 per cent of all CVD cases could have been prevented.”

This large-scale Mendelian study used a new genetic approach that allowed the team to assess how increasing levels can affect CVD risk based on how high the participants actual vitamin D levels were. The study used information from up to 267,980 individuals which allowed the team to provide robust statistical evidence for the link between vitamin D deficiency and CVD.

“It is not ethical to recruit people with vitamin D deficiency to a randomised controlled trial and to leave them without treatment for long periods. Prof Hyppönen says.

“It is exactly this type of difficult setting which demonstrates the power of our genetic approach, given we can show how improving concentrations affects the risk in those most in need, without exposing participants to any harm.

“Those with the lowest concentrations are likely to have the strongest effects, yet a population-wide approach to eradicate vitamin D deficiency could reduce the global burden of CVDs.”

Notes to editors:

*The Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS) and Osteoporosis Australia (OA) guidelines (2012) classify vitamin D results as follows:

  • 25-hydroxy-vitamin D of less than 30 nmol/L is deficient
  • 25-hydroxy-vitamin D of 30-50 nmol/L is mildly deficient
  • 25-hydroxy-vitamin D of greater than 50 nmol/L is sufficient for the health of bones

Cell Phone Radiation Protection: The Definitive Guide

Cell Phone Radiation Protection
*We may earn a commission for purchases made using our links.
Please see our disclosure to learn more.

Cell phones are a nearly inescapable part of modern society. All the information we could need is available at a moment’s notice, and the details of our lives are uploaded to the cloud. Many jobs require you to use a cell phone, so even if you can avoid having one for personal reasons, the odds are good that you have to use one at some point.

All that cell phone usage may come at a price, however. It turns out that cell phones emit a form of EMF radiation that has been linked to numerous health conditions. Furthermore, the long-term effects of exposure haven’t been studied, so it’s possible there are health consequences that won’t be revealed for years to come.

As tempting as it may be to swear off all cell phones, that’s not a realistic solution for many Americans. We rely on our phones to keep track of our schedules, our finances, and even our health. To exist in society without one is unthinkable for many.
Spring Video Background with Light Stock Footage Video ...

Fortunately, even though you may not be able to avoid cell phones altogether, there are things you can do to limit your exposure to their radiation.

Cell Phone Radiation and Why It’s Harmful

Cell phone radiation is a form of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation. It is especially hazardous to humans because it comes at us from all directions. We are surrounded by cell phone towers and by cell phones being used nearly everywhere we go. We even carry them on our bodies.

In November 2018, the federal Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program announced the results of a study that concluded that there was “clear evidence” that cell phone radiation (2G and 3G in the study) caused DNA damage and cancer in mice

Other studies have examined the effects of cell phone radiation, as well. A 2011 Swedish study, for example, looked at instances of malignant brain tumors compared to cell phone usage trends. Researchers found a statistically significant correlation between usage and malignant brain tumors, a risk that was particularly increased if the subject first used a cell phone prior to the age of 20.

There are two primary types of EMF radiation emitted by cell phones: ELF-EMF and RF-EMF radiation. RF-EMF is emitted by many wireless communications devices, and it radiates at a much higher frequency than ELFs. RF-EMF radiation has been linked to breast cancer, sperm damage and male infertility, and even gliomas, the deadliest of brain tumors. ELF-EMF radiation is emitted by electricity and has been linked to childhood leukemia.

What To Do About It

Unless you work a job where you’re on call 24 hours a day, you may want to consider turning your cell phone off at night. If you can’t stand the thought of going off-grid for a few hours, or if you use your cell phone as an alarm clock, at least keep it across the room at night. Strive for a minimum of six feet away from your bed to help minimize your absorption of EMF radiation.

Another step to take is to go into airplane mode whenever possible. By turning off your data and WiFi, you will be lowering your phone’s overall EMF output. Most games, music, and movies can be easily downloaded onto your device so you don’t require a constant internet connection. If you don’t need to be connected to data, turn it off. The sending and receiving of data signals generate RF-EMF.

Of course, these measures will not protect you when you are actually using your phone. The best solution would be to not use a cell phone at all. But that’s no longer feasible for most of us. Those work emails won’t answer themselves, and you can’t miss your weekly call with mom.

So, what does that mean for those of us who feel we can’t live without our cell phones?

It means we need to protect ourselves.

Protecting Yourself

Minimizing your cell phone usage is one key thing you can do to reduce your EMF exposure. Many times, cell phones are used as time wasting devices. We scroll through social media, check the news, and play games while waiting in line at the grocery store or winding down before bed. If your goal is to be around less cell phone radiation, however, the aim should be to use your phone only when necessary.

1. Get a case

EMF protection cases slide over your phone and help reduce the amount of radiation that reaches the user. They don’t usually cover the entire device– in order to allow a signal to pass through, most cases just go over the phone’s screen. Nonetheless, this does result in a reduction of EMF, making it safer to handle the device. One option is DefenderSheld’s EMF radiation case, which is lab tested and FCC certified to block nearly 100% of your phone’s EMF output.

2. Locate and protect against nearby towers

Cell phones and towers go hand in hand. If your phone has a strong signal strength at your home, there is a good chance that there is a tower nearby. Depending on your area, it may be a 5G tower, 4G, or both. Just like a cell phone, towers produce RF-EMF radiation, and if your home is in close proximity to one, it could be increasing your levels of exposure. If you find a tower nearby, you can apply a layer or two of EMF protective paint on the wall facing said tower. Or, if painting isn’t an option, an EMF shielding fabric could be hung on the wall, as well. For help locating towers near you, see our guide to locating 5G towers.

3. Use a headset

Talking on your cell phone requires putting the phone up against your head for the duration of your call. Unfortunately, the closer you are to an EMF-emitting device, the more radiation you’re exposed to. So when you put your phone next to your ear, you are blasting your brain with radiation. To create more distance between you and the device during phone calls, try using an air tube headset. These are wired headsets that plug into your phone and allow you to continue your call from a distance. SYB’s Air Tube Stereo Anti-Radiation Headset is one example– it simply plugs into your phone and you’re ready to either listen to music or chat away. For other headset options, head over to the Ten Best Air Tube Headsets of 2020.

4. Turn Bluetooth off

If your car automatically pairs with your cell phone or you regularly use another Bluetooth device, it can be tempting to leave your phone’s Bluetooth turned on. Not only does this drain your battery, however, but it also exposes you to higher levels of EMF radiation. When your phone’s Bluetooth receiver is powered on, it’s constantly searching for a signal to pair with. Turning Bluetooth off lowers your phone’s overall EMF output.

5. Don’t store the phone on your body

It’s easy to slip your cell phone into your pocket and go. Remember, however, that decreasing the distance between you and your device increases your radiation exposure. So when you have your phone in your pants pocket, you are exposing your sensitive reproductive organs to potentially harmful EMF radiation. In men, this has been studied and shown to cause problems with sperm motility and quality. Try and store your device away from your body if at all possible. And if not, consider shutting the phone off– or at least putting it on airplane mode– prior to putting it in your pocket.

6. Hold the phone back

If you’re texting or playing a game on your device, it’s common to rest it on your lap or at least hold it in close proximity with your body. Now that you know about the relationship between proximity and EMF exposure, however, you may be able to imagine why that’s problematic. To get around this, try and hold the phone as far away from you as possible while in use. Of course, you still need to be able to see and reach the screen, but it doesn’t need to be resting on or directly next to you. The more distance you can keep, the better.

Final Thoughts

Although researchers are continuing to study the harmful effects of cell phone radiation, it’s becoming increasingly clear that EMF protection makes sense. There are things you could and should do to guard yourself against EMF radiation. Keeping your phone away from your bed, turning it in airplane mode whenever possible, and even shutting it off from time to time are all great steps toward lowering your overall EMF exposure.

In addition to lifestyle changes, an EMF-proof case is another great tool in your arsenal. If you’re concerned about exposure to EMF radiation from your cell phone, an EMF-proof case is a must-have purchase. We scoured the internet to find some of the best cases out there and compiled them in one convenient list. The options recommended here all offer at least 87% EMF protection, and many are available for under $100.

If you’d rather find your own case, an EMF meter is a great way to verify that it does what it promises. If your case is advertising 99% EMF protection, measure the output yourself to ensure that you’re getting what you paid for. Just make sure you have an EMF meter that is capable of recording both ELF and RF-EMF.

Cell phones aren’t going anywhere. We will be using them for the foreseeable future, so it’s important to safeguard yourself against their potentially harmful effects. Common sense lifestyle modifications and the purchase of an EMF resistant cell phone case can go a long way. Your health is worth it. Cell Phone Radiation Protection: The Definitive Guide

28 Health and Nutrition Tips
That Are Actually Evidence-Based

It’s easy to get confused when it comes to health and nutrition. Even qualified experts often seem to hold opposing opinions, which can make it difficult to figure out what you should actually be doing to optimize your health.

Yet, despite all the disagreements, a number of wellness tips are well supported by research.

Here are 28 health and nutrition tips that are based on scientific evidence.

Guille Faingold/Stocksy United
1. Limit sugary drinks

Sugary drinks like sodas, fruit juices, and sweetened teas are the primary source of added sugar in the American diet (1Trusted Source).

Unfortunately, findings from several studies point to sugar-sweetened beverages increasing risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, even in people who are not carrying excess body fat (2Trusted Source).

Sugar-sweetened beverages are also uniquely harmful for children, as they can contribute not only to obesity in children but also to conditions that usually do not develop until adulthood, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

Healthier alternatives include:

  • water
  • unsweetened teas
  • sparkling water
  • coffee
2. Eat nuts and seeds

Some people avoid nuts because they are high in fat. However, nuts and seeds are incredibly nutritious. They are packed with protein, fiber, and a variety of vitamins and minerals (6Trusted Source, 7Trusted Source).

Nuts may help you lose weight and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease (8Trusted Source).

Additionally, one large observational study noted that a low intake of nuts and seeds was potentially linked to an increased risk of death from heart disease, stroke, or type 2 diabetes (9Trusted Source).

3. Avoid ultra-processed foods

Ultra-processed foods are foods containing ingredients that are significantly modified from their original form. They often contain additives like added sugar, highly refined oil, salt, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors, and flavors as well (10Trusted Source).

Examples include:

  • snack cakes
  • fast food
  • frozen meals
  • canned foods
  • chips

Ultra-processed foods are highly palatable, meaning they are easily overeaten, and activate reward-related regions in the brain, which can lead to excess calorie consumption and weight gain. Studies show that diets high in ultra-processed food can contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions (11Trusted Source, 12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source, 15Trusted Source).

In addition to low quality ingredients like inflammatory fats, added sugar, and refined grains, they’re usually low in fiber, protein, and micronutrients. Thus, they provide mostly empty calories.

4. Don’t fear coffee

Despite some controversy over it, coffee is loaded with health benefits.

It’s rich in antioxidants, and some studies have linked coffee intake to longevity and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and numerous other illnesses (16Trusted Source, 17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source, 19Trusted Source).

The most beneficial intake amount appears to be 3–4 cups per day, although pregnant people should limit or avoid it completely because it has been linked to low birth weight (18Trusted Source).

However, it’s best to consume coffee and any caffeine-based items in moderation. Excessive caffeine intake may lead to health issues like insomnia and heart palpitations. To enjoy coffee in a safe and healthy way, keep your intake to less than 4 cups per day and avoid high-calorie, high-sugar additives like sweetened creamer.

5. Eat fatty fish

Fish is a great source of high-quality protein and healthy fat. This is particularly true of fatty fish, such as salmon, which is loaded with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and various other nutrients (20Trusted Source, 21Trusted Source).

Studies show that people who eat fish regularly have a lower risk for several conditions, including heart disease, dementia, and inflammatory bowel disease (22Trusted Source, 23Trusted Source, 24Trusted Source).

6. Get enough sleep

The importance of getting enough quality sleep cannot be overstated.

Poor sleep can drive insulin resistance, can disrupt your appetite hormones, and reduce your physical and mental performance (25Trusted Source, 26Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source).

What’s more, poor sleep is one of the strongest individual risk factors for weight gain and obesity. People who do not get enough sleep tend to make food choices that are higher in fat, sugar, and calories, potentially leading to unwanted weight gain (28Trusted Source, 29Trusted Source).

7. Feed your gut bacteria

The bacteria in your gut, collectively called the gut microbiota, are incredibly important for overall health.

A disruption in gut bacteria is linked to some chronic diseases, including obesity and a myriad of digestive problems (30Trusted Source, 31Trusted Source).

Good ways to improve gut health include eating probiotic foods like yogurt and sauerkraut, taking probiotic supplements — when indicated — and eating plenty of fiber. Notably, fiber serves as a prebiotic, or a food source for your gut bacteria (32Trusted Source, 33Trusted Source).

8. Stay hydrated

Hydration is an important and often overlooked marker of health. Staying hydrated helps ensure that your body is functioning optimally and that your blood volume is sufficient (34Trusted Source).

Drinking water is the best way to stay hydrated, as it’s free of calories, sugar, and additives.

Although there’s no set amount that everyone needs per day, aim to drink enough so that your thirst is adequately quenched (35Trusted Source).

9. Don’t eat heavily charred meats

Meat can be a nutritious and healthy part of your diet. It’s very high in protein and a rich source of nutrients (36Trusted Source).

However, problems occur when meat is charred or burnt. This charring can lead to the formation of harmful compounds that may increase your risk for certain cancers (37Trusted Source).

When you cook meat, try not to char or burn it. Additionally limit your consumption of red and processed meats like lunch meats and bacon as these are linked to overall cancer risk and colon cancer risk (38Trusted Source, 39Trusted Source, 40Trusted Source, 41Trusted Source).

10. Avoid bright lights before sleep

When you’re exposed to bright lights — which contain blue light wavelengths — in the evening, it may disrupt your production of the sleep hormone melatonin (42Trusted Source).

Some ways to help reduce your blue light exposure is to wear blue light blocking glasses — especially if you use a computer or other digital screen for long periods of time — and to avoid digital screens for 30 minutes to an hour before going to bed (43Trusted Source).

This can help your body better produce melatonin naturally as evening progresses, helping you sleep better.

11. Take vitamin D if you’re deficient

Most people do not get enough vitamin D. While these widespread vitamin D inadequacies are not imminently harmful, maintaining adequate vitamin D levels can help to optimize your health by improving bone strength, reducing symptoms of depression, strengthening your immune system, and lowering your risk for cancer (44Trusted Source, 45Trusted Source, 46Trusted Source, 47Trusted Source).

If you do not spend a lot of time in the sunlight, your vitamin D levels may be low.

If you have access, it’s a great idea to have your levels tested, so that you can correct your levels through vitamin D supplementation if necessary.

12. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

Vegetables and fruits are loaded with prebiotic fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, many of which have potent health effects.

Studies show that people who eat more vegetables and fruits tend to live longer and have a lower risk for heart disease, obesity, and other illnesses (48Trusted Source, 49Trusted Source).

13. Eat adequate protein

Eating enough protein is vital for optimal health, as it provides the raw materials your body needs to create new cells and tissues (50Trusted Source).

What’s more, this nutrient is particularly important for maintenance of a moderate body weight.

High protein intake may boost your metabolic rate — or calorie burn — while making you feel full. It may also reduce cravings and your desire to snack late at night (51Trusted Source, 52Trusted Source).

14. Get moving

Doing aerobic exercise, or cardio, is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health.

It’s particularly effective at reducing belly fat, the harmful type of fat that builds up around your organs. Reduced belly fat may lead to major improvements in your metabolic health (53Trusted Source).

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, we should strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity each week (54Trusted Source).

15. Don’t smoke or use drugs, and only drink in moderation

Smoking, harmful use of drugs, and alcohol abuse can all seriously negatively affect your health.

If you do any of these actions, consider cutting back or quitting to help reduce your risk for chronic diseases.

There are resources available online — and likely in your local community, as well — to help with this. Talk with your doctor to learn more about accessing resources.

IMPORTANT:  Research now shows there is NO SAFE LEVEL OF ALCOHOL

16. Use extra virgin olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil is one of the healthiest vegetable oils you can use. It’s loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and powerful antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties (55Trusted Source, 56Trusted Source).

Extra virgin olive oil may benefit heart health, as people who consume it have a lower risk for dying from heart attacks and strokes according to some evidence (57Trusted Source).

17. Minimize your sugar intake

Added sugar is extremely prevalent in modern food and drinks. A high intake is linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source, 58Trusted Source).

REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS CALLED  “SUGAR DIABETES”?
Do you think corporate America had ANYTHING to do with the name change?  Do you?   WHY?

Oh, Money! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Your suffering is worth a lot of money.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend keeping added sugar intake below 10% of your daily calorie intake, while the World Health Organization recommends slashing added sugars to 5% or less of your daily calories for optimal health (59, 60Trusted Source).

18. Limit refined carbs

Not all carbs are created equal.

Refined carbs have been highly processed to remove their fiber. They’re relatively low in nutrients and may harm your health when eaten in excess. Most ultra-processed foods are made from refined carbs, like processed corn, white flour, and added sugars.

Studies show that a diet high in refined carbs may be linked to overeating, weight gain, and chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease (61Trusted Source, 62Trusted Source, 63Trusted Source, 64Trusted Source).

19. Don’t fear saturated fat

Saturated fat has been controversial, and in the past, it was thought to be a major contributor to heart disease (65Trusted Source).

While it’s true that saturated fat raises cholesterol levels, it also raises HDL (good) cholesterol and reduces small, dense LDL (bad) cholesterol particles, which is linked to a lower risk of heart disease (66Trusted Source).

Emerging research has questioned the association between saturated fat intake and heart disease. It appears that saturated fat may actually have no impact or a slightly positive impact on overall health as long as your overall diet is healthy and nutritionally balanced (67Trusted Source, 68Trusted Source).

20. Lift heavy weights

Strength and resistance training are some of the best forms of exercises you can do to strengthen your muscles and improve your body composition.

It may also lead to important improvements in metabolic health, including improved insulin sensitivity — meaning your blood sugar levels are easier to manage — and increases in your metabolic rate, or how many calories you burn at rest (69Trusted Source, 70Trusted Source).

If you do not have weights, you can use your own body weight or resistance bands to create resistance and get a comparable workout with many of the same benefits.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends resistance training twice per week (71Trusted Source).

21. Avoid artificial trans fats

Artificial trans fats are harmful, man-made fats that are strongly linked to inflammation and heart disease (72Trusted Source).

Avoiding them should be much easier now that they have been completely banned in the United States and many other countries. Note that you may still encounter some foods that contain small amounts of naturally occurring trans fats, but these are not associated with the same negative effects as artificial trans fats (73Trusted Source).

22. Use plenty of herbs and spices

There is a variety of herbs and spices at our disposal these days, more so than ever. They not only provide flavor but also may offer several health benefits as well (74Trusted Source).

For example, ginger and turmeric both have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which may help improve your overall health (75Trusted Source, 76Trusted Source).

Due to their powerful potential health benefits, you should aim to include a wide variety of herbs and spices in your diet.

23. Nurture your social relationships

Social relationships — with friends, family, and loved ones you care about — are important not only for your mental well-being but also your physical health.

Studies show that people who have close friends and family are healthier and live much longer than those who do not (77Trusted Source, 78Trusted Source).

24. Occasionally track your food intake

The only way to know exactly how many calories you eat is to weigh your food and use a nutrition tracker, as estimating your portion sizes and calorie intake is not unreliable (79Trusted Source, 80Trusted Source).

Tracking can also provide insights into your protein, fiber, and micronutrient intake.

Though some studies have found a link between tracking calories and disordered eating tendencies, there is some evidence that suggests that people who track their food intake tend to be more successful at losing weight and maintaining their weight loss (78Trusted Source, 81Trusted Source, 82Trusted Source, 83Trusted Source).

25. Get rid of excess belly fat

Excessive abdominal fat, or visceral fat, is a uniquely harmful type of fat distribution that is linked to an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease (84Trusted Source).

For this reason, your waist size and waist-to-hip ratio may be much stronger markers of health than your weight.

Cutting refined carbs, eating more protein and fiber, and reducing stress (which can reduce cortisol, a stress hormone that triggers abdominal fat deposition) are all strategies that may help you get rid of belly fat (85Trusted Source, 86Trusted Source, 87Trusted Source, 88Trusted Source).

26. Avoid restrictive diets

Diets are generally ineffective and rarely work well long term. In fact, past dieting is one of the strongest predictors for future weight gain (89Trusted Source).

This is because overly restrictive diets actually lower your metabolic rate, or the amount of calories you burn, making it more difficult to lose weight. At the same time, they also cause alterations to your hunger and satiety hormones, which make you hungrier and may cause strong food cravings for foods high in fat, calories, and sugar (90Trusted Source, 91Trusted Source).

All of this is a recipe for rebound weight gain, or “yoyo” dieting.

Instead of dieting, try adopting a healthier lifestyle. Focus on nourishing your body instead of depriving it.

Weight loss should follow as you transition to whole, nutritious foods — which are naturally more filling while containing fewer calories than processed foods (14Trusted Source).

27. Eat whole eggs

Despite the constant back and forth about eggs and health, it’s a myth that eggs are bad for you because of their cholesterol content. Studies show that they have minimal effect on blood cholesterol in the majority of people, and they’re a great source of protein and nutrients (92Trusted Source, 93Trusted Source).

Additionally, a review involving 263,938 people found that egg intake had no association with heart disease risk (94Trusted Source).

28. Meditate

Stress has a negative effect on your health. It can affect your blood sugar levels, food choices, susceptibility to sickness, weight, fat distribution, and more. For this reason, it’s important to find healthy ways to manage your stress.

Meditation is one such way, and it has some scientific evidence to support its use for stress management and improving health (95Trusted Source, 96Trusted Source).

In one study involving 48 people with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or both, researchers found that meditation helped lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and inflammation compared with the control group. Additionally, the participants in the meditation group reported improved mental and physical wellness (97Trusted Source).

The bottom line

A few simple steps can go a long way toward improving your eating patterns and wellness.

Still, if you’re trying to live a healthier life, do not just focus on the foods you eat. Exercise, sleep, and social relationships are also important.

With the evidence-based tips above, it’s easy to introduce small changes that can have a big impact on your overall health.

Dream Psychology

One item that Carl Jung felt was a window into our subconscious and that could be used in analytical processes was the dream and dream psychology.

Dreams are a representation in the sensory environments of our mind. They reflect thoughts, feelings and awareness. They reflect our everyday lives in that they are expressing what has been occupying our minds in the day or two prior to the dream. One way a dream can be interpreted is by looking at how it relates to recent events in our life. Dreams occur naturally during a sleep phase known as REM sleep. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep occurs about every ninety minutes through out the night. These REM periods get progressively longer throughout the night, starting out about 5 – 10 minutes each at the beginning of the night – up until about 30-40 minutes by morning. In total – people dream about 100 minutes per night.

People dream in order to help the brain grow by exciting neurons. This explains why all people and creatures dream, and babies dream up to about 8 hours per day. Researchers also believe that dreams play a role in memory- they strengthen connections between certain areas of the brain and allow other connections that hold less useful information to be released and forgotten. REM sleep also plays a role in releasing certain hormones in the brain and it has been found that reduced REM sleep seems to reduce depression.

Recurring dreams reflect feelings and awareness that have not been successfully resolved in our waking lives. Unresolved feelings often include the sudden loss of a Loved one, or an abrupt end to a romantic relationship. We wish the situation could have ended differently, so we tend to replay it in our minds.
