The Dangerous Illusions We Perceive / The Longevity Diet / Sept. 4: Classes Resume

“It is because our own Human existence
is so dependent on the help of others
that our need for Love
lies at the very foundation
of our existence.”

Dalai Lama

                              Accept the Love of God.

Things
are rarely
as they appear
to be.

And
what is hidden,
what is missing,
cannot be focused upon
by the
Human mind.

We often
doubt
what we cannot see,
when up is down,
what is
may not be.

As we journey
through the multiplicity
of Life’s illusions,
our sense of reality
can become distorted.
Some moments
can become mirrored in madness.
Yes,
each year over one million
very precious Souls
are pushed
completely over the brink of sanity.
(click here and look deeply into the eyes of reality)

The illusions
packed into Life
are fomented by
perception and motion,
proximity,
and a myriad of other
dimensions of improbability.

This
has led some to conclude that,
“Life, itself,
may be an
llusion.”

If
the Universe doesn’t exist
when we stop looking at it,
then it is
hung only on the walls
of our perceived
awareness.

From our friends at dailymail.com:
A famous theory in quantum mechanics
argues that a particle’s past behavior
changes
based on what we see.

Now,
scientists have performed a new experiment
proving this theory to be true
on the scale of atoms.

‘It proves that measurement is
everything.
At the quantum level,
reality does not exist

if you are not looking at it,’
said Associate Professor Andrew Truscott.

Despite the apparent weirdness,
the results confirm the validity of
quantum theory.

Quantum theory governs the World of the very small,
and has enabled the development of many technologies
such as LEDs, lasers and computer chips.

But,
SOMETHING
animates all conscious
Beings.
No.
It is not
us.
That is another
very dangerous
ILLUSION.

It is LOVE!

The Love we seek
is reflect in Time.
If we open our eyes
to the illusions
of Life in living,
we may close them again,
and simply Love
in remembering.

Looking back,
we may forward see.
God’s Love
was always now,
and will forever be,
the Ever Ebbing Tide
of a deepening, endless Sea.

In each moment
the Love of God
will always be,
here and now,
the Mirror
of each moment to be.
For His Love
is Love,
Infinity.

The Love we seek is reflect in Time.

Our mentality is
very fragile and malleable,
much like
the reality
we think we see,
when we take the time
to look.

But,
the illusions we perceive
and desperately try
to understand,
can shatter the Lives
of our very fragile
Children
and ourselves.

As they and we
strive toward pleasing
so many others,
we can come to see
perfection
as the ultimate goal
of Life and living.

Is that the Moon or ME?

The total focus
is then upon
what is now
“ME”.
And that
is a very dangerous
place to be.
.
My Dear Friends,
everything
but
Love

is illusory.
And there is MUCH evidence
in quantum mechanics
and
the Holy Bible:

All that is in the World
(the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes
and the arrogance produced by
material possessions)

is not from the Father,
but is from the world.”
1 John 2:16
.
Ultimate Reality
is God,
and God is not just the essence of
Love,
HE  IS  LOVE.

“God is Love;
and he that dwelleth in love

dwelleth in God,
and God in him”.
1 John 4:16

.

YOU, too, are beautiful beyond Belief.

If you desire
to guide your precious
Child
toward sanity,
toward TRUTH,
and Life
and JOY,
Love your Child,
simply Love,
and ONLY Love.
.
Yes,
you may come to see
everything else in Life
and on Earth
is an illusion.
.
Those who give up
on Life
have felt abandoned
by the one reality
of Love.
.
If your child
looks into your eyes
and does not see
Love,
no,
it does not
exist.
.
Reality does not exist
if you are not looking at it.
.
EVERYTHING
is in
the Eye and Mind
of the Beholder.

.

Yes,
our need for Love
lies at the very foundation
of our existence.
.
My Precious Friends,
the JOY
you find in sharing
all the Love hidden
in your precious Heart,
can become their reason
for living.
.
The great Truths
are simple.

.
Ultimately,
the further we move
away from God
(Love)
the more endangered
WE
and our Children
become.
.
Let us keep Life
simple.
.
Accept
the Love of God.
And let it flow
through YOU
to everyone you meet.
.
Goodnight.
.

“Love is the fire
that warms our lives
with unparalleled Joy
and Divine Hope.”
– Dieter F. Uchtdorf

“God Is Love.”
John affirms that
“God is Love”
( 1 John 4:8 ).
God does not merely Love;
He Is Love.
Everything that God does
flows from his Love.

                        Everything.

“The sun comes up,
it’s a new day dawning.
It’s time to sing
Your song again
Whatever may pass,
and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
when the evening comes.”

Matt Redman – Ten Thousand Reasons

          Eating what nature intended.

From our Friends at:
eco-friendly-africa-travel.com/longevity-diet.html

The longevity diet
is simply eating what nature intended us to,
thus ensuring a healthier and longer life.

Animals in the wild, eating their natural diet, live an average of ten times the number of years it takes them to reach maturity (Chimpanzee’s reach maturity by the time they’re five, and live to about fifty years, for instance).

Meanwhile, most humans’ lifespan is barely five times the number of years it takes to reach maturity.

The Longevity Diet: How long should we be living?

Steve Charter, in Eat More Raw: A guide for health and sustainability, cites Dr Joel Wallach, who emphasises the scientifically accepted view that the genetic potential for longevity in humans suggests we should live to around 120 to 140 years old.

Dr Wallach lists a few more cases to further support this, including Russian Georgians who commonly live to 120 and the Armenians and Ebkanians, where living to 140 is not uncommon.

He cites one Armenian who, from his military records, is thought to have lived to 167 years old, and the Titicaca Indians of south-east Peru who lived to between 120-140 years old. There’s also the case of the Niger chief who died at 126 with all his teeth, and a Syrian in the Guinness Book of Records who fathered 9 children after 80 and went on to live to 133.

Put into context, the average age for Americans was 75.5 years old in 1994. For doctors it was 58. Dr Wallach suggest that these figures suggest that there is great value in treating yourself (through nutritional and lifestyle changes), rather than putting your health in the hands of doctors.

If you think about it logically, the reason there’s such a difference in our lifespan (compared to chimpanzees or those who manage to live to a ripe old age) is that we are not eating our natural diet.

In this article I’ll discuss some of the longest-living tribes and what the commonalities are in terms of their diet and lifestyle, what I term the longevity diet.

“Bad men live that they may eat and drink,
whereas good men eat and drink
that they may live.”

Socrates

The longevity diet: Diet of the longest-living cultures

John Robbins, in Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World’s Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples, describes the lifestyles and dietary patterns of the long-lived cultures of the Abkhasia of Southern Russia, the Vicalbamba Indians of the Ecuadorian Andes and the Hunza of North Pakistan.

He found that the percentage of calories they obtained daily was between 69-73% carbohydrates, 15-18% from fat and 10-13% from protein.

Overall daily calories ranged between 1,700 -1,800, while the Abkhasia ate 90% plant foods and the Vilcabamba and Hunza ate 99% plant foods.

All three ate low amounts of salt, zero sugar or processed food, and had no incidence of obesity and other common diseases.

He also discussed the Okinawa, who, though eating a more animal-based diet, had a similar lifestyle.

I highly encourage you to read this book, or if you need a taste of what it’s about, read this review of Healthy at 100, which includes a preview of the fascinating first chapter.

The longevity diet includes some common denominators. These are:

  • Diet including whole mostly vegan, organic food with minimal animal products and fat.
  • Vitamin D and exercise
  • Strong community values
  • Spirituality and a sense of purpose

The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they’ll ease
Your will they’ll mend
And charge you not a shilling.

~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

The Memory, the Magic, the Mystery / The Healing Power of Laughter / Sept. 4: Classes resume

                 Endless in its Beauty

At every crossroad
we have a choice.
We travel in one
direction
or another,
never knowing
we are all lost
in the vast void
of timeless space.

Timeless
in the moment,
without form
in the now
to be,
and truly ageless
in our search for Love,
our Love for Life,
and for one another.

“The end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started
and know the place
for the first time.”
– T. S. Eliot
.

And then one day
we come to see
God,
in His Love
for all there ever was,
and all there is
to ever be.

We each live
for but a moment,
just one brief moment,
the moment
when we realize
the Heart of God
beats within
every lonely
Life
in search of Love,
and longing
to be.

Dog-leaping Happiness                        (Our precious Lila, shortly before she departed us in this Life)

In the Sacred Time
of that moment
lives the memory,
the magic,
the Mystery
of Life
and Living.

“I am almost a hundred years old;
waiting for the end,
and thinking about the beginning.

Meg Rosoff

Meg Rosoff

There are things I need to tell you,
but would you listen if I told you
how quickly time passes?

I know you are unable to imagine this.

Nevertheless,
I can tell you that you will awake someday
to find that your life
has rushed by at a speed
at once impossible and cruel.

The most intense moments
will seem to have occurred only yesterday
and nothing
will have erased the pain and pleasure,

the impossible intensity of Love
and its dog-leaping Happiness,
the bleak blackness of passions unrequited,
or unexpressed, or unresolved.”
Meg Rosoff

                  Endless in its Beauty.

My Dear Friends,
the Love of God
will never let you go.
In His Arms
you can never
be alone.

His Love
bears the Torch
to Light the Way.
It restores
all Life
to another day.

Do not let
your thoughts
close the door
to your precious Heart,
for only it may see
the Rainbow
through a rain of tears
that promises
not in vain,
to return God’s Love
again and again.

                           Endless . . .

From the Sacred ground
blossoms all Life,
endless in its Beauty,
now
and to be.

In Nature,
the end
is the beginning.
And so it is
with us.
With our Mother
Earth,
and God as our
Father,
in mind and in memory,
and in all things that matter,
every moment is
resurrected,
and Life and Love
go on.

In God’s Love
there is no
loss,
only what is
found.

And,
there is rest
for the weary
Soul.

poet Cecelia Weir

Cecelia Weir

“There is Rest For The Weary,
True rest for the Soul.
Troubles, trials and tribulations.
Yes, the agony of time
As Eternity rolls.

Faith is the key.
Prayer is the answer.
And God got it all in control.
If you’ll just go to Him,
And talk as you stroll along,
The relief will begin to surface
And you Heart will be made strong.

Be encouraged in this Life
For there can be Happiness
Right here on Earth.
Despite its pain,
Its misery and its strife.
The good Lord loves you
He sees, He knows, and He cares.
If we but only trust Him

For He is Love..
And He is Light….
He’ll be your Light.
He’ll be your Guide.
For He’s always there
Right by your side.
Live in your Soulful rest.
That the Heartfelt ease
Will give you Life at its best.
Rest, rest, in the Lord.
For He is..
Rest
For The Weary.”
– Cecelia Weir

                     The Sun restores Life.

As our Lives
return a borrowed day,
let us Pray.
The Sun restores Life
in its ray,
and keeps God’s promise
of another new day.

“There is an ecstasy
that marks the summit of life,
and beyond which Life cannot rise.
And such is the paradox of living,
this ecstasy comes when one is most alive,
and it comes as a complete forgetfulness
that one is alive.
This out of all will remain.

They have lived and have tossed:
So much of the game will be gain,
Though the gold of the dice
has been lost.”
– Jack London (Love of Life)
.
The crystal mirror
of our memory,
sometimes with painful longing,
sometimes with delight,
invites us to return,
to never leave again
the Beauty of Love
lost along the way,
never fully knowing
that this moment,
and the last,
are one.

Goodnight.

Laughter Therapy

“The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.”
E. E. Cummings

What is laughter therapy?

We were born with the gift of laughter. Laughter is a natural medicine. It lifts our spirits and makes us feel happy. Laughter is a contagious emotion. It can bring people together. It can help us feel more alive and empowered.

Laughter therapy, also called humor therapy, is the use of humor to promote overall health and wellness. It aims to use the natural physiological process of laughter to help relieve physical or emotional stresses or discomfort.

Research supporting laughter therapy

A growing body of research supports the theory that laughter may have therapeutic value.

For years, the use of humor has been used in medicine. Surgeons used humor to distract patients from pain as early as the 13th century. Later, in the 20th century, came the scientific study of the effect of humor on physical wellness. Many credit this to Norman Cousins. After years of prolonged pain from a serious illness, Cousins claims to have cured himself with a self-invented regimen of laughter and vitamins. In his 1979 book Anatomy of an Illness, Cousins describes how watching comedic movies helped him recover.

Over the years, researchers have conducted studies to explore the impact of laughter on health. After evaluating participants before and after a humorous event (i.e., a comedy video), studies have revealed that episodes of laughter helped to reduce pain, decrease stress-related hormones and boost the immune system in participants.

Today more than ever before, people are turning to humor for therapy and healing. Medical journals have acknowledged that laughter therapy can help improve quality of life for patients with chronic illnesses. Many hospitals now offer laughter therapy programs as a complementary treatment to illness.

The Healing Power of Laughter

For people living with cancer, it may seem strange to find humor when facing such serious issues. Yet, laughter may be helpful in ways you may not have realized or imagined.

Laughter may help you feel better about yourself and the world around you. Laughter may be a natural diversion. When you laugh, no other thought comes to mind. Laughing may also induce physical changes in the body. After laughing for only a few minutes, you may feel better for hours.

When used in addition to conventional cancer treatments, laughter therapy may help in the overall healing process.

According to some studies, laughter therapy may provide physical benefits, such as helping to:

  • Enhance oxygen intake
  • Stimulate the heart and lungs
  • Relax muscles throughout the body
  • Trigger the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)
  • Ease digestion/soothe stomach aches
  • Relieve pain
  • Balance blood pressure
  • Improve mental functions (i.e., alertness, memory, creativity)

Laughter therapy may also help to:

  • Improve overall attitude
  • Reduce stress/tension
  • Promote relaxation
  • Improve sleep
  • Enhance quality of life
  • Strengthen social bonds and relationships
  • Produce a general sense of well-being

Laughter therapy at CTCA

At Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), we fight cancer using an integrative approach. Our Mind-Body Medicine Department offers supportive options, including laughter therapy, to help you cope as you receive conventional cancer treatments.

Laughter therapy strives to help you use and enjoy laughter as a tool for healing. Dr. Katherine Puckett, Chief of the Division of Mind-Body Medicine at CTCA®, first introduced laughter therapy at our Illinois hospital upon a patient’s request.

CTCA offers humor therapy sessions, also known as Laughter Clubs or humor groups, to help cancer patients and their families use and enjoy laughter as a tool for healing. These leader-led groups take patients through a number of laugh-related exercises, including fake laughter and laughter greetings.

Laughter Club is based not on humor or jokes, but rather on laughter as a physical exercise. One group laughter exercise involves patients standing in a circle, with the leader in the middle. Patients put their fingertips on their cheekbones, chest or lower abdomen and make “ha ha” or “hee hee” sounds until they feel vibrations through their bodies. Dr. Puckett says that, during these exercises, it is hard for people not to join in because laughter is so contagious.

According to Dr. Puckett, at the end of a laughter therapy session, patients have said things like “I didn’t even think about cancer during Laughter Club” and “That felt great! Things have been so hard that we hadn’t laughed in months.” Dr. Puckett adds that the 8-year-old daughter of a CTCA patient who attended Laughter Club said afterwards: “I never thought about laughing every day, but now I realize I can. Like even when I don’t feel happy, I can still laugh and feel better.”

“To enable someone to laugh
is much like
giving them
a bouquet of beautiful
Flowers.”
–  Wm. C. Anderson

You Can Only Imagine / They Live for Love / Sept. 4: Classes resume

You can only Imagine
what you will see,
if you open
the Eyes of your
Heart.

Only
the Human Heart
dances
to the rhythm
of another Human
Heart.

Only
the Human Heart
can cry
when another
Human Heart
will die.

Only
the Heart of another
person,
like you and I,
possesses the
Infinite
Love of God.

“What else does this craving,
and this helplessness,
proclaim
but that there was once in man
a True Happiness,
of which all that now remains
is the empty print and trace?
This he tries in vain to fill
with everything around him,
seeking in things that are not there
the help he cannot find in those that are,
though none can help,
since this Infinite abyss can be filled
only
with an Infinite and Immutable Object;
in other words,
by God Himself.”

Blaise Pascal
Pensées VII(425)

The Human Heart
is made
to Love,
and be Loved.

There is
no other reason
that it beats.

Go where your Heart leads you.

Every
precious Earth made Child
is made to be
what they must be,
go where they
must go.

So go
where your Heart
leads you.
And be.

And do so
in the name
of Love,
and you will
come to see,
the Sun rises
in the eyes
of everyone
you meet.
And
it shall never
set.

“Love
is an exclusive reality

of the Human Heart.
We were Created out of Love,
and we were Created to know Love,
to live by Love,
and to communicate it
in such a powerful way
that it will give Life.
Just as Saint Maximilian Kolbe said,
Only Love Creates.”
Karol Wojtyla
Love and Responsibility

Without proclaiming Love,
will I ever be able
to truly speak?
Will death claim
all,
even the last vestige
of the lingering Love
the lives within,
and longs
to be free?

Rivers running
deep
know how we feel.

What is neglected
becomes invisible.
In the center
of what you are,
is the center
of who you are.
To arrive
at the center
of ourselves,
is the shortest
journey
we shall ever take.
And
the pathway to
our Heart,
leads to
an Infinite Destiny.

Do not neglect
the beautiful destiny
God desires for
YOU.

Every person
longs for a sense of purpose
– destiny: not fate.
God has written this desire
into our Hearts.

“Delight yourself in the Lord
and He shall give you
the desires of your Heart.
Psalm 37:4

Do so in the name of Love.

A Philosophy
of Love
is a declaration for
truly living.

A great awakening
awaits,
in the silent space
between each beat
of your precious
Heart.

“God is Love.
Whoever lives in Love
lives in God,
and God in him.
1 John 4:8

This sentence brought more understanding,
more sweetness,
more liberation to the Heart
and to the mind,
even in the time it was written,
than the whole World can bring
today.

Yes,
to be truly alive,
Love,
simply Love
everyone,
and every living
thing.

God
is Love.
And Love,
my Precious Friend,
is what YOU
are.
.
“A new command I give
YOU:

Love one another.
As I have Loved you,
so you must Love one another.
John 13:34

My Dear Friends,
the tragedies
that befall us,
are the way
to gain
Wisdom,
not
a guide for
living.

“10 million red blood cells are made every hour
and an equal number destroyed.
If either supply or destruction
becomes out of synchrony by as little as 1%,
before long, your life ends
due to anemia, or polycythemia,
which is to say,
your blood gets so thin
than oxygen transport is insufficient
or it gets so thick
that it can no longer circulate.

Our very existence seems more an affront to a
“Survival of the Fittest” evolutionary scenario.
Man’s unimpressive hair covering
would have restricted early man
to the warmest climes.

Man’s kidneys are relatively poor
water conservers

compared to most animals,
suggesting that man was restricted
to a warm and wet environment.
Our claws are NOT impressive.
Our running speed could hardly serve
as an effective escape mechanism.
Man’s teeth aren’t especially good
at capturing or killing game.

Relative to most animals,
man’s digestive ability is inefficient.
Even man’s greatest ability,
his intellect,
would not have done the earliest man
a great deal of good in the harshest
of survival conditions.

How much good would your intellect do you
in a tropical wilderness
without food, clothing, shelter
and specific training in survival?
If survival of the fittest were the rule
in the earliest days of man,
how did we ever make it?”

Every precious Life
is a Song.
And
if you listen,
truly listen,
you will know
the rhythm
is the beat
of its Heart.

Yes,
Listen.

God
in His Wisdom,
is calling your name.
A songbird
sings it,
over and over again.

      Let a flower pick you.

Let a flower
pick you.
Give it
to someone
in need of Love.
Do it often,
and come back
to Life,
again
and again.

“Every mystery of life has its origin in the Heart.”           ― Hans Urs von Balthasar, Heart of the World

To look
deeply
into the eyes
of another,
is to hold
a mirror,
and see Worlds
you have never
seen.

In the eyes
of another,
your beautiful Soul
will be revealed.

Goodnight.

                        They live for Love.

Atlas Moths have no mouths
and don’t eat even once
after emerging from their cocoons,
relying on fat storage from their immature stages of life.
Once they emerge from their cocoons,
they have a very short lifespan.

They can never
eat,
so, they live for
Love.

After spending about a month in their cocoons,
Atlas Moths emerge as beautiful creatures.
This state is short lived.
The adult moths typically die within a week or two
of spreading their wings.

To be truly alive, live for LOVE!

“And now here is my secret, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
a very simple secret:
It is only with the Heart
that one can see rightly;

what is essential
is invisible to the eye.”

The Deadly Effect of Being Perfect / How to Prevent Cancer by Eric Jensen (excellent)

The Love of God is perfect.

The Deadly Effect
of Being Perfect

“Have no fear of perfection
– you’ll never reach it.”

Salvador Dali

I constantly remind myself, and others,
of the dangers of being
a perfectionist.
To strive for perfection is to never be satisfied.
And importantly, to never be Happy.
Endeavoring to be perfect can easily become
a deadly double-edged sword.

This is my favorite photo of R. J. He is showing off his new collar!

This is my favorite photo of R. J.
He is showing off his new collar!
He is another perfect gift.

Trying to always be perfect is pursuing the worst in us, that part that tells us nothing is ever good enough.

I have found one of the best antidotes to the unnatural inclination toward perfection is simple. Stop thinking about it and give your life, your labor and your love to others. Recognize that Love is the condition in which
the happiness of another person is essential to your own.

An antidote, by the way,
is a substance which can counteract a form of poisoning.
The term ultimately derives from the Greek αντιδιδοναι antididonai, “given against”. Antidote is the best term to use, in my opinion, to better understand what we are really coping with.
For you see,
perfectionism is a form of poisoning.
The expectation of perfection can poison the Spirit of a Child.
Yes, it can lead to death,
and has
many millions of times.

Allow me to mention, again, the horrifying statistic involving our precious children that enroll in a College or University.

Statistics on College suicides has tripled since the 1950s and suicide is currently the second most common cause of death among college students, second only to traffic accidents.
1 in 12 college students has actually made a suicide plan

It is unbelievable, but tragically true. And suicide, typically, does not discriminate based on age, race, gender, or sexual orientation. But in this country it does discriminate. Suicide rates are inordinately high for our young, vulnerable and emotional distressed and stressed out children. For middle and high school age youth (ages 12-18), suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death.

In ages 10-14, we have seen an alarming 128% increase in suicides since 1980, making it the third leading cause of death for that age group according to the Jason Foundation – see: http://jasonfoundation.com/youth-suicide/facts-stats/

More teenagers and young adults
die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.

Come on Folks,
WAKE UP!

Each day in our nation,
there are an average of over 5,400 attempts by young people grades 7-12. My dear friends, these are NOT just numbers,
they are our children.

War deaths in Afghanistan number over 2,100 young Americans, lost since the U.S. entered that conflict in 2003. But most people are unaware that a much greater loss of young lives occurs
every year
on this nation’s college campuses.

Yes,
we are effectively at war,
in our own country,
with what causes the death
of many more young Americans.
And the sooner we realize that it is a war,
and one that we are losing,
the sooner we will find hope for the many thousands
who desperately need Hope.
They are the children of our deepest love.
They are the sons and daughters of us all.
They are my children.
And they are your children.

Folks, we need to admit our mistakes.
We need to take responsibility.

We need to love each other enough to see the light of our neglectful transgressions. We need to stop pretending that we are doing what is right. We have failed so many of our deeply loved children, by not having the courage to say no. Say NO to outdated and oppressive teaching methodologies. Say NO to antiquated and overly stressful and unnecessary assessment strategies that place so much stress on children that they simply stop breathing. Say NO to anyone who expects our children to be perfect. Shout No. And then, by God, go out into this world and do something about it.

And what has Dr. A been up to?And what has
Dr. A
been up to?

My friends,
there is simply too much stress placed upon our young, sensitive, vulnerable children. And what have you gained, if your honor roll child no longer exists. The only thing to be gained from such tragic loss is knowledge – truly sad knowing, and deep, everlasting regret.

We now have the wisdom, garnered from an unimaginable price paid by so very many children, to know that a precious child means far more to us than a crippled letter of the alphabet printed upon a piece of really dumb looking paper.

LeVonna and I have come to the realization that such artificial contrivances as report cards and grades, are highly superficial and deplorably subjective. Our state government (that’s us, Folks, you know – WE the people!) is responsible for adding even more unnecessary stress through mandated testing. And, importantly, these man-made artificial contrivances can become highly destructive of fragile self-esteem and of Life itself. And the truth is, they are really meaningless, in the grand scheme of things. But, on the bright side, corporate profits are up, as they have effectively lobbied to market these very expensive examinations.

By the way, Martin Carnoy, at Stanford University
and Richard Rothstein of the Economic Policy Institute
examined test series over the last decade.

An analysis of international tests suggests
students in the U.S. are not lagging behind
their peers in other countries.
Based on their analysis, the researchers found that average low,
partly because a disproportionately greater share of US students
comes from disadvantaged social class groups.

My friends,
this is part of the price we pay for living in a vibrant democracy.
We educate and test EVERYONE.
Many other countries test ONLY those that are not screened out and placed in fast-track vocational programs. If you are not bright enough,
off you go to the factory!
And guess what,
these students are not included in tests
that compare the U. S. with other nations.

Based on analysis,
these researchers found that average U.S. scores
are low partly because a disproportionately greater share of US students comes from disadvantaged social class groups.
(Remember, we include EVERYONE in our testing.)

The analysis also shows how errors in selecting sample populations of test-takers and arbitrary choices regarding test content contribute to results that appear to show U.S. students lagging.

Folks,
the UNFAIR and highly publicized comparative results create panic and stupidity in response to a very unreal scenario.
The results can be abhorrently devastating to your child,
who is NOT doing poorly in comparison.
The stress placed upon the teachers, administrators and your child
is unwarranted, and many times, destructive.
It is dangerous
and contributes to very deadly atmosphere
that pervades academia.
We now live in a dangerously delusional place.
And only the truth shall set us
free.

Remember the TECAT testing fiasco – the infamous Texas Examination of Current Administrators and Teachers. It was a test of basic literacy given to Texas teachers in 1980’s. This test, seen as politically essential, was intended to raise the public esteem of teachers by weeding out incompetents. Teachers expended massive effort in reviewing basic skills and drilling on the test format
(yes, the format of all things, and totally useless in this life
or the hereafter).

The focus in our public schools, at the time, was drawn AWAY from teaching and placed entirely upon preparation for this test.
99% of the 210,000 who took the test had passed.
And we lost thousands of experienced vocational education teachers, special education-teachers and others who were over represented among the failures. The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled it an UNFAIR TEST.
This, so called, literacy test, it ruled,
discriminated against teachers who were black or over 40.

I recall one very dear and deeply loved third grade teacher, with over thirty years of experience, who was so nervous that she could not cope with the stress. It was over three decades ago when she took her last test in college, at Texas Wesleyan University. I was her Principal and found her to be not only highly competent, but very, very loving and deeply dedicated to every child. The students in her class were privileged to be in the life-affirming, warm and loving environment she created for them. I attended her funeral shortly after she lost her employment and all hope. I cried for weeks. This was yet another example of an ill-conceived assessment program with deadly consequences.

Ed. Note:
Not ONE
state legislator
attended her funeral.

Yes,
it was another testing fiasco
that slapped thousands of educators in the face.
It devastated the lives of precious, dedicated veteran educators
– people that our kids needed in their shop classes, elementary classes and special education programs.
What a horrible experience for everyone.
It scarred educators so much
that it was never repeated.

Thank God!

And all it accomplished, other than spending our money in a cruel and unwise manner, was to leave the landscape of so many dedicated and experienced educator’s lives in ruin. What a way to appreciate those precious people who chose a life of near poverty (yes, some teachers received food stamps to survive) in order to help our children.

But,
we had people who needed to get re-elected,
regardless of the cost.

Remember folks,

your vote

is the single most valuable thing you possess!
When you place someone in control of your life, and the lives of your precious children, by giving them your vote – make certain that they possess the qualities of being truly Human.
If compassion and common sense have not been
the hallmark of their life,
vote for someone else.
It is that simple.

I have a suggestion for you.

Please take the last report card you received and tack it to the wall. Throw darts at it until it has so many holes in it that you can see the light of day through it (another way of saying – the truth).

Now,
when you have put enough holes in this byproduct of an
ill-conceived, panic laden, distortion of reality,  you will realize that it shall never do your child much good. After all, it is not really accurate and can convey negative connotations that are truly
harmful.

These reports are are so subjective they are not really telling you much of anything, at all. But, you got in some good practice throwing darts. I also recommend the same for those self-destructive and illusory state exam results. You know, the ones that have resulted in closing entire schools, while stroking the egos of a few politicians.

Oh my God!
Please forgive us.
And hand me another dart.

If
you really want to give your child an assessment,

give him or her a huge hug at the end of day,

and tell the one you cherish just how much he or she is loved by you. Take the time to say everything you ever wanted to tell your child, each and every single day. Let them know that they are the PERFECT gift from God. And they need not even try to improve upon such perfection. Now that is a genuine and heart-felt  assessment.
And it is one worth giving.

And if your really feel compelled to have a written report card, write

“I LOVE YOU”

on a piece of paper, fold in half and hand it to your child.

I asked that you not use so much eye makeup.

I asked that you not use
so much eye makeup.

The Love of God is perfect.

And the Gift He has given you, in a child of His, is all you need and all you shall ever need. Please, do not even think about asking for more. That would truly be an affront to God. Please do not insult and offend the One who has given you a Perfect Gift in the form of His precious child.

And please, don’t allow your child to be given contrived, superficial, highly subjective grades for anything. Do not allow some pretentious, philosophically antiquated, overtly biased and over bearing teacher to do this.

Hey,
give your kid a puppy, or a smile, or the wink of an eye, or a big hug or a new toy or a good laugh or a trip to the back yard to play with him or her.

Squirt your kid, regardless of age, with the water hose, and then take off running. (Expect to get wet within the next 15 seconds. You cannot have more fun than a great water fight on a hot day).
Give your child the very firm knowledge
that whatever they do is good enough.
In fact, tell him or her that what you EXPECT
is not to be perfect.

No one is.
No one.

It would be abnormal to be perfect.
Trust me, you would not fit in with the rest of us.
A perfectly behaving child really doesn’t exist.
And, nothing good will ever come from it.

The only thing you should expect from your deeply loved child
is that he or she
be Happy.
If he or she is not, do something different.
If you think about what makes you happy,
you can make someone else happy.

It is that simple.

Yes,
it is important to graduate.
But in order to graduate, you must survive.
You must be alive.

And your child will, if you relax,
and Pray
and play with him or her
(by the way, more play results in a better preparation
for the game of life.
And, in many ways,
it is a really dumb game!).

If your child is being provided with an antiquated grade from a philosophically outdated school,
give the grade back to the teacher
,
where it belongs.
Yes,
just hand it back.
A superficial and subjective grade
truly belongs given back to the instructor.
Isn’t it a reflection upon how the child did
under the tutelage of that teacher?

Hand it back!

Ask why the teacher did not do a better job teaching your child.
And inform the teacher that you really don’t want or need his artificial appraisal of someone he will really never know.

Fear
can keep you, and your children, from living.
But with God on your side,
you need not fear anything or anyone
.
You are perfectly loved by your Creator.
In fact,
you are the very definition of perfection.

But perfection from human beings is unattainable.
The expectation of perfection from children is as deadly
as any toxin, infection, contagion or war.

So relax.

We are already perfect.
Now, you can say a simple prayer of Thanksgiving.
And give that perfectly wonderful child of yours
a big hug for me.

Hey,
give me one too!
I will be perfectly happy with that.

Goodnight.

Ahhhh!!   More highly subjective grades!

What would you be willing to do to have an extra day, month, or years with your loved ones?

Each year we take a break from the science of education and update you on two devastating diseases likely to impact you and/or your loved ones.

This month it is cancer; July will be about Alzheimer’s disease.

You need to know how to protect yourself and your family from cancer. Mostly because you CAN! Yes, most cancers are preventable and I’ll tell you how.

DISCLAIMER: Before I begin any comments about health, I am required by law to make a disclaimer: “The following comments are not meant to diagnose or treat any disease, nor have they been approved by the FDA.” (By the way, an oncologist would have to make the same disclaimer.)

The Research

Cancer continues to be the #2 cause of death, next to #1 heart disease. This is disturbing considering how much money is spent on cancer research every year. In fact, when I type “cancer” into one of my favorite medical research engines I can find over 72,000 NEW research articles on cancer published in 2018 ALONE. And we are only halfway through the year! That is over 400 articles being published EVERY DAY just about cancer.

Scientists are learning a tremendous amount about cancer every day. But then why does the World Health Organization predict cancer incidents will more than DOUBLE in the next two decades? How is it that more than 14 MILLION people will receive a cancer diagnosis this year? I’ll tell you.

One explanation is that a lot of people aren’t paying attention to what the research is saying. Instead, they are relying on outdated assumptions or results from bad research that somehow got too much publicity.

For example, many believe that cancer is hereditary, or just a result of really bad luck. Turns out genetics and “bad luck” account for a very small percentage of all cancer diagnoses. Most cancers (depending on which type) have a shockingly low 2-10% heritability.

In fact, did you know that the heritability of breast cancer from your mother is a shockingly low 1.8%? This might sound surprisingly low. Let me explain how we might get fooled into thinking it is genetic, but in fact, it is a slew of environmental factors creating familial trends (Anand, et al., 2008).

Girls often grow up in the same house as their mother. They eat the same kinds of foods, breathe the same air, and get exposed to the same molds, toxins and noise stress. They might use the same cleaning products (bleaches, sprays, toxins, etc.), the same personal care products (creams, hair color, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.) and they can take on similar beliefs and attitudes. In short, females are often immersed in their mom’s environment. Because this is the environment they grow up in, they often continue these habits into adulthood. It is these lifestyle choices and environmental factors that lead to most familial trends in breast cancer, NOT genetics.

This is actually great news! This means that you and I have a CHOICE, to a large degree, when it comes to cancer. The majority of all CANCERS ARE PREVENTABLE! Then why are we still losing the war on cancer? Because some people (NOT you) are unwilling to make the adjustments to their lifestyle and environment to PREVENT most cancers.

Prevention is the way to go for many reasons. Typical cancer treatments are expensive and often painful. Although there are some new and promising alternatives, the most common ways cancer is treated are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. These require you to be cut open, poisoned, or burned, respectively. So, if some of the lifestyle changes outlined below sound unpleasant, just remember your alternatives.

Here are 5 lifestyle adjustments you can make to protect yourself from cancer. I think you’ll be surprised to learn how much money you are spending on things that are putting you at a GREATER RISK of cancer.

Five Ways To Save $$$ While Building
A Forcefield Against Cancer

1. Stop putting toxins IN your body
Below are some of the more common toxins you might be putting IN your body. Each one directly increases your risk of cancer. Which one is the easiest for you to eliminate (or at least reduce drastically) from your diet?

  • Tobacco – Using tobacco increases your risk of developing at least 14 types of cancer. It also accounts for about 25–30% of all deaths from cancer and 87% of deaths from lung cancer (Anand et al., 2008). If you have a habit of smoking, seek help and make a positive change in your life. You are worth it. Check out http://www.smokefree.gov for some extra support. And if you are wondering, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and water pipes (or bongs) may also cause cancer.
  • Excessive alcohol – Are you part of the 70% of Americans that do not recognize alcohol consumption as a risk factor for cancer? If so, consider yourself now informed (Heymach et al., 2018). If you are having more than 2-4 drinks a WEEK, you might want to consider cutting back. Like most things, a little bit probably isn’t going to hurt you but too much is putting you at greater risk.
  • Sugar (candy, soda, sugary flavored coffees, baked goods, etc.) – Cancer LOVES sugar. It feeds off of it, literally, and helps the cancer to grow. Did you know doctors give patients pure glucose linked to a radioactive dye to locate tumors in the body? Those sugar-loving cancer cells, suck up the sugary marker and thus glow brighter than the other tissue, helping the scanning device to see the cancer cells.
  • White bread and white rice – These (along with sugar) all raise your blood sugar levels, and you produce extra insulin in the pancreas. (Asians have a gene that prevents this.) Diabetes is a known dietary cancer risk (Anand, Nath & Saraswathy, 2014).

All of the substances listed above are addictive substances. Therefore, cutting them from your diet will not be as easy as cutting Brussels sprouts, even though it could potentially save you hundreds of dollars a month. I’m not going try to tell you it will be easy to stop smoking, give up soda or your morning sugary cup of joe, or whatever your favorite vice is. It will be hard.

But you know how to do hard things. You do it every day. You are a teacher! Every day you do things much harder than say NO to something listed above. Harness your teacher superpowers and take care of your body.

2. Stop putting toxins ON your body

Do NOT rely on the government to tell you what you eat (the food pyramid changes every few years and it’s still wrong) or to help you make safe choices for you. PAY attention to the ingredients that interact with your body, especially shampoo, hair conditioner, hair coloring products, deodorant, face cleaning products, soaps and makeup products.

Stop buying things that contain “Parabens.” They’re a family of chemicals used in various personal care products and have long been linked to cancer. They disrupt estrogen function (Harvey, 2003). As an alternative, buy from the companies Arm & Hammer (“Essentials Natural Deodorant”) and Tom’s (“Natural Deodorant” and toothpaste) who both sell healthy products. You’ve just started to lower your risks.

One-time usage does not put you at risk. But using slightly dangerous products over time is a higher-risk behavior. You can save yourself a lot of money by eliminating toxic products that don’t fall in the “need” category as well.

The Food and Drug Administration has been sitting on damning evidence from government research studies since July 2009, showing over 80% of all sunscreen products contain known carcinogens. We’ll get to what to avoid in just a moment.

3. Reduce your stress

What does your stress level have to do with cancer? More than you might think. Chronic stress impairs your body’s capacity to fight inflammation. If you are an over-scheduled adult, or have an over-scheduled child, do yourself a favor and aim to under-schedule yourself and your family. Cut back on an activity or two. Not only will this save you more money, but it will create space and time in your life for things that will contribute to your cancer force field:

  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Breathing exercising
  • Appreciating nature
  • Spending time with loved ones
  • Mindfulness

4. Exercise

Researchers have long linked exercise with lower breast cancer risk for women past menopause, believing it works partly by lowering the estrogen levels. Higher estrogen levels can raise breast cancer risk. Find a physical activity you love and commit to doing it 3-6 times a week for at least 20 minutes.

And then consider some of these other habits that could help you move your body more:

  • If it’s 1-3 floors in a building, take the stairs down to the lobby.
  • Instead of driving around for an extra 3 minutes waiting for the best parking spot to come available, spend those minutes walking the parking lot.
  • Take the stairs instead of the escalator at the mall or airport. My rule of thumb is unless I’m carrying more than 20 lbs, take the stairs!

5. Get your vitamin D

The most common cause of skin cancer is the sun. You probably already knew that.

You probably also know that vitamin D (that you get from the sun) is great for your physical and emotional health. So, what is one to do? Stay out of the sun? Go out in the sun? Read on – I’ll tell you

There’s no risk of skin cancer at short exposures (15 minutes or less) and a HUGE upside. The Vitamin D helps facilitate healing from illnesses and helps metabolize the potassium and calcium needed for strong bones (Lappe, Travers-Gustafson, Davies, Recker, & Heaney, 2007). If you want to stay outside longer, do intervals of sun, then shade. It is the continuous sun exposure that stacks up the radiation, not the intervals.

When you use sunscreen, use the lowest number that can work for you. Most people think they’re protecting themselves better by using a higher numbered sunscreen. But the higher the number, the more risk you’re taking with toxic chemicals.

The higher SPF is also a waste of money… Sunscreens with SPF 8 block 87% of UVB rays (the ones that burn your skin). SPF 30 blocks 97%. SPF 100 sunscreens block 99%. In any case, read the ingredients on what you buy.
Certain sunscreen ingredients may be potentially carcinogenic or have other health risks (anything with oxybenzone, benzophenone, octocrylene, or octylmethoxycinnamate.)

Please be a healthy label-reader: Avoid personal care products with retinyl palmitate and oxybenzone.

Please do not buy products that may increase cancer risk. And remember, a little sun is good; too much is dangerous.

How to spend the money you just saved?

With the adjustments above, you can potentially save yourself hundreds of dollars a month. With that extra money, might I suggest a few things to stock your fridge and shelves with to help prevent cancer:

  • Foods packed with antioxidants: Antioxidants include enzymes or other organic substances, such as sunlight, vitamin or food sources that are capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidation. Stock up on sweet potatoes, watermelon, colored berries (like blueberries… frozen is OK), cold water (NOT farm raised) fatty fish (like salmon), colorful vegetables (such as peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, etc.), green tea, olive oil, coffee, dark chocolate (60-65% is best), plain Greek yogurt, mangos, and papayas.
  • Folic acid: Folic acid is known to reduce cancer risks. That includes the following dark greens (in order): spinach, collard, turnip and mustard greens, broccoli and asparagus, papaya, beans, peas, lentils and avocado (Willett, 2006). When you slowly reduce, and then eliminate the products made by humans (chips, cookies, bread, candies, etc.) and focus on nature-made foods, health often improves. Keep in mind, if it’s dark and bitter, it’s better for your body.
  • Curcumin: Turmeric’s active compound is a yellow spice, called curcumin. This spice is commonly used in Indian foods. In one recent study, two researchers concluded, “Curcumin can selectively modulate multiple cell signaling pathways linked to inflammation and to the survival, growth, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis of cancer cells.” (Hasima & Aggarwal, 2016).  Studies have shown that curcumin even kills cancer stem cells, the “mother” cells that control the growth and spread of cancer cell colonies (Prasad, 2015). You can buy curcumin capsules in most drug stores and supermarkets. I buy mine from Amazon (VitaLabs as Curcumin C3 Complex).
  • Graviola: Annona Muricata (also known as Soursop, Graviola, and guanabana), is an amazing evergreen plant found in tropical and subtropical climates. Multiple studies have substantiated its effects as being anticancer, anticonvulsant, anti-arthritic, antiparasitic, hepatoprotective and antidiabetic. This fruit extract may be purchased from Amazon as Biotech Nutritions Graviola (Paul, Gnanam, Jayadeepa, Arul, 2013; Antony, Vijayan, 2016; Moghadamtousi, Fadaeinasab, Nikzad, Mohan, Ali, Kadir, 2015).

Cancer prevention requires serious lifestyle commitments to healthy living. Those changes include smoking cessation, increased ingestion of fruits and vegetables, moderate-low use of alcohol, caloric restriction, sufficient exercise, avoidance of over-exposure to sunlight, minimal meat consumption, use of whole grains, and use of vaccinations, getting sufficient vitamin D, avoiding toxic personal care products, cutting the sugar, use of curcumin, Graviola, and getting regular check-ups with fewer radiation doses.

That’s a lot.

So, first, take a moment and acknowledge yourself for whichever of these are already a part of your personal lifestyle. You are already helping your body stay cancer free. Now, pick one area you know you can improve on. Make a change and stick with it. When it becomes a comfortable habit, make another improvement. You are worth it!

The Biggest news in cancer TREATMENT for 2017-18

The most promising breakthroughs in cancer treatment revolve around gene editing, immunotherapy, and proton therapy.

Gene editing is maturing. You may have heard of the gene-editing technique simply called CRISPR. It works like a pair of scissors to cut DNA, inserting or reordering bits of genetic code with remarkable, science-fiction-like results: CRISPR can help create mosquitoes that don’t transmit malaria, or be used in humans, to battle 50 untreatable diseases, including cancer. How? You can remove the patients’ immune cells, edit the genes, and reinsert the weaponized cells into the body to hunt and kill cancer. This is not science fiction; it has already succeeded in test patients.

Another option is immunotherapy, which “activates” certain parts of your immune system to fight disease. Immune cells cruise around your body looking for “foreign molecules”. Once they find these foreigners, a certain class of immune cells (cytotoxic T cells) attack and eliminate the foreigners. Unfortunately, cancer has several ways it can hide from immune cells. However, scientists have discovered ways to genetically re-engineer a patient’s immune T cells to detect the previously hidden cancer cells. The game of hide and seek is over.

But, there’s a glitch. Making immune-cell treatments for every patient is expensive and time-consuming. Commonly, doctors can’t use a patient’s own T cells because there are not enough healthy ones for them to tinker with. Instead, they use someone else’s. This increases time and expense. So while it shows promise, immunotherapy has some limitations.

Proton therapy is essentially an improved form of radiation. At high energy, protons (positively charged particles) can destroy cancer cells. Traditional radiation treatment has been shown to be quite successful, but at the cost of damaging healthy tissue near the cancerous tumor. This can create additional health challenges. With proton therapy, radiation can be deposited directly in the tumor without exposing nearby healthy tissue with the radiation.

The world of science is making progress with cancer treatments. It is time for YOU to do your part and make progress with cancer preventions. How can you help yourself? Take hold of your health and commit to making at least one change today.
