“There’s always some reason
to feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction oh beautiful release.

Memories seep from my veins
They may be empty and weightless
and maybe

I’ll find some peace tonight.

In the arms of an Angel fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie.

You’re in the arms of an Angel;
may you find some comfort here
So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn

There’s vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don’t make no difference,
escaping one last time

It’s easier to believe
In this sweet madness,
oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

You’re in the arms of an Angel;
may you find some comfort here.”

Happiness Every Day

From Seeker to Finder

Discovering Every Day Happiness

Seeker-Finder

by George Kimeldorf

I’ve been alive 25,567 days. That is a long time. All I have ever wanted during that time was to be happy-nothing more.

I thought I knew what I needed to do to be happy, so I did all those things: I earned a Ph.D. in mathematics, married a wonderful woman, raised two lovely children, pursued a successful career as a mathematics professor, and became wealthy. Everything seemed fine. But the joy, satisfaction, and peace of mind I so desired continued to elude me.

At age 35, I began to realize that the “right” things would not get me what I wanted, so I actively sought happiness by doing workshops, reading self-help books, leading seminars, practicing self-hypnosis, and meditating. I became a seeker.

Only in the past few years did real transformation begin. I am no longer a seeker; I am a finder. Despite doubting in the past that I would ever succeed, I have found the happiness and peace of mind I had long sought.

I actually love life.

I love the world, and I especially love and accept myself. I have discovered that we can really love the world and all the people in it, despite the violence, hatred, crime, hypocrisy, greed, suffering, and starvation.

I am celebrating my 70th birthday as I write the first pages of this book. During this 70-year journey, I have discovered many things. To my utter amazement, I found that learning to be happy is not mystical, mysterious, or magical . Happiness is an ordinary skill that anybody can learn and master through practice, like driving a car or playing a violin. And like driving a car or playing the violin, happiness is an experiential skill which cannot be learned from reading books.

If happiness cannot be taught in a book, why am I writing this? The first purpose of this book is to tell you what does not work. In my quest for happiness, I pursued many fruitless paths. What if I had achieved happiness earlier in life, rather than having spent decades following roads leading nowhere? Had I read a book such as this, I might have avoided some of these pitfalls and shortened some of these detours. By sharing my experience, I hope to spare you years of looking in the wrong places.

Most people spend their entire lifetimes seeking happiness in places where, at best, it is only temporarily experienced. Their parents, teachers, and religious leaders falsely promised them as children that hard work, financial success, acquisition of goods, and approval from others will make them happy. Our culture spreads these illusory expectations through movies, books, TV, and advertising. When people achieve these goals hoping to be happy and then realize that they are not in fact happy, their unfulfilled expectations lead to disappointment, dissatisfaction, disillusionment, and discouragement. To make matters worse, they often blame themselves for this perceived failure, leading to feelings of powerlessness and despair.

Other people, having read books or attended seminars, are seekers. They know that they cannot achieve happiness through financial success, acquisition of goods, or approval of others. They know that happiness results from experiencing gratitude, acceptance, self-love, and forgiveness. They have learned that the path to happiness is through awareness of their thoughts, doubting their beliefs, changing their points of view, and expressing unconditional love. Yet they remain seekers. Although they know what to do to become happy, the true joy, peace of mind, satisfaction, and contentment which they fervently seek continues to elude them.

I have met dozens of such seekers, who are unwittingly driving with their left foot on the brake pedal. Until they discover and confront how they are holding themselves back, they will forever remain seekers. In later chapters, I will describe my good fortune in finding teachers who not only made me aware of how I was pressing that pedal, but also assured me that it was safe to release my foot from the brake.

The second reason for writing this book is to tell you about the path by which I have achieved my current state of happiness, joy, and peace of mind. Perhaps it will inspire you to pursue a similar goal. Will my path work for you? I do not know. I know that it has worked for me, as well as for many other people. I also know others who, after learning about this path, have decided not to pursue it. I respect their decision. It is not for everybody.

When you watch young children, have you noticed their obvious excitement in being alive, their natural curiosity, their joy, their spontaneity? Two minutes after being hurt, they are laughing and ready to play. We were all once young children. What happened to our spark, spirit, and spunk? Can this joy of Life be revived? Why do so many of us instead experience cynicism, resignation, and discontent? Must we take Life so seriously? As you read, I encourage you to think about these questions and how they relate to your own Life.

My last reason for this book is that I enjoy writing it. May you derive as much joy and inspiration from reading it as I do from writing it.

In my blog here, I share a lot about how to live a simple life. In the post of Leo Babauta from Zen habits he has shared some rules he follows to keep his life simple, so I thought why not. I too share some of the rules I follow that keep my life simple since I too have been living a simple life since quite some time.

Simple living is mostly linked with minimalist living, but I personally don’t call myself a minimalist. I believe one should live in abundance, enjoy the bounty of life, be flexible, and not hold back on things that actually make you feel good.

It’s also not accumulating things endlessly, but also not being too rigid. I like to follow a middle path in terms of simplifying my life.

So with this here, let’s begin.

Pin for later

13 Rules that keep my life simple

1. Wake up early everyday

The first rule I follow that has kept my life simple is to avoid late nights and sleep early.

It has been many years now since I have become a morning person, and honestly I started to see true change in me only after I became one.

In one of my post, I have written about what I have gained by becoming a morning person, and I still feel the same.

It’s not to say that those who stay late nights can’t live a simple life, but for me, choosing to deliberately become a morning person and waking up early was the first step I took to make space for better habits and live intentionally and live a simple life.

And this is one rule I will always follow.

Here is how I became a morning person

2. Always follow a morning routine

I follow a morning routine because it helps me give ample me-time.

I make sure that I always give first priority to myself and to my life state. My morning routine ensures that I get it and I devote the first 2 hours every day purely to my self and towards my personal growth.

This is my morning routine before 8 am. Sometimes when I have less time, still I always try to follow each of my morning ritual for 10-15 minutes each.

If you want to create a morning routine, but finding it hard to stick to it, here is what you can do to make your morning routine stick. It helps!

3. Have a structure to your day

Life becomes messy and complicated when you don’t have anything to anchor you.

When time isn’t managed properly, entire life feels unmanaged and unnecessarily complicated.

I’m saying this from my own personal experience from before.

But I have found that having a simple Life and uncomplicated isn’t hard. It just requires you to be little intentional with your time.

When you’re intentional with your time and create a structure to your day, life easily becomes simple and the change you find in yourself in almost instant!

Now I have s structure to my day, in the sense that I break my day into mornings, afternoons, evenings and night. I don’t leave my days unintentional, but have a daily routine.

Having a simple daily routine to follow works wonders to simplify life, and sticking to one isn’t hard actually.

Here is how to create a simple daily routine and stick to it.

4. Follow Deep Work Habits

When ever I work, I follow deep work habits. This is a term I came across after reading the book, ‘Deep Work’ by Cal Newport. I loved the book and all the methods it has to work deeply and have better focus.

I follow the same and I have a couple of productivity methods I follow which helps me to stay focused, make time for the things that matter and be productive.

Some of the deep work habits I follow is:

  • Doing my main important task early in the morning
  • Setting up 25 minutes timer while I work
  • Keeping a scoreboard of my deep work hours
  • time batching

I have written in details about 10 top productivity methods from experts in one of my earlier post. You will find here 10 productivity techniques given by experts and find the one or ones that fit you the most to stay productive and simplify your work habits.

5. Always keep desk and surrounding tidy

I wish to have a home office someday, but for now its just my room and my small desk.

I make sure that my desk and my surrounding environment is always clean and tidy. I just can’t seem to function properly in an untidy setting.

Having a clean environment boosts my mood and my mind feels light. When I come home to a clean room, my life feels simple too.

Compared to that, if my room and my desk was messy and clothes all over the place, I am sure I would have felt that my whole life was messy and complicated.

Simple living all comes down to what makes you feel good and feel simple. And these are all little things and little rules I follow that keep my life simple.

6. No phone right after waking up

Another rule I strictly follow is no phone right after waking up. Earlier it used to be scrolling through Facebook and Instagram first things after opening my eyes.

I can’t tell how toxic this habit is and I have given it up long time ago.

Cutting this small habit has been life changing for me and it helped me give time to actually start and keep new good habits.

If you want to simplify life, never ever use your phone first thing in the morning. Instead you could create a short morning routine and start your day intentionally.

Do this for your personal growth and self care and see the difference in how you feel.

P.S here are 9 more toxic morning habits you should give up immediately.

I don’t even keep Instagram and Facebook app on my phone anymore. I just have it in my iPad and I use it only if I have nothing else to do.

7. Move body everyday

Doing things which you love and which makes you feel good automatically simplifies your life.

The only thing next is to actually do it and take the first step and experiment with it to see how it makes you feel.

I just love how exercise makes me feel. Normally, I exercise at home for 25-30 minutes. When I have less time, I make sure I move my body everyday even if it’s just for 5 or 10 minutes.

Currently I am working out using Pamela Reif’s fitness app named ‘Pam’.

I love all of her workouts, especially her dance workouts which are so fun!

I exercise early morning because I like to start my day feeling good. Moving my body boosts my mind and mood immediately and I feel I can start my day with better focus and intention.

In the evening I go out for evening walks. Walk is another thing which I love. These small routines and daily habits keep my life simple and I feel my life is on track.

Here are 10 daily habits to start to change your life and 10 toxic habits to cut off from your life

8. Pray everyday

Prayer has kept my life simple. It lets me be in touch with my true self and in tune with my intentions and desires.

I pray every morning and evening. My prayer consists of both sitting in silence, sharing my deepest intentions and visualising, as well as chanting the Buddhist mantra ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’ as a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism.

I see a stark difference in my life and how I go about my day when I make time for prayer and when I don’t.

When I pray, I find that I am more aligned with who I am and how I actually want to be. My energy levels are high and my life state is on a high frequency.

Whereas when I don’t pray, I tend to forget about my goals, my dreams and about keeping others and myself in my mind.

Here is why I Pray and how to Pray.

9. Don’t engage in gossips and complains

I try my best to not engage in gossips and complains. In order to do this, I bring awareness to the channels that bring about gossip and complains.

I am not a part of any WhatsApp group which engages in such talks about what others did or what others are doing.

Complaining is something I have given up as I try to bring awareness to what I talk and how I talk about certain things.

I try to not complain even if things go wrong, and even if sometimes things does go wrong, I try to take it as an amusing happening instead of being frustrated about it.

When other people come up to me sharing their frustrations or complains, I give them an ear, but I try not to add on to it by giving them more sets of complain.

I don’t want to attract more things to complain about, but instead show my Gratitude for the things that I have in my Life.

10. Do small things with Love

When you fill yourself with joy, the more joyful Life becomes. And a joyful Life cannot be a messy life. A joyful Life cannot be a stressful life. A joyful Life will always be simple and significant.

We most often feel that joy is something we only experience occasionally, only when we get something new or do something new.

But I’ve come to find, as so many others have already, that joy can come in small things. I am not an expert in this, but I am trying to fill joy as much as possible.

I have come to find that it just requires a simple switch to get into the ‘Joyful mode’. And that switch is simply mindfulness.

When I do even little things with mindfulness and loving Awareness- being aware of water while I am washing dishes, thanking the water and thanking my hands, I seem to instantly switch the mundane into something joyful. And we can turn on this switch at anytime while we do anything.

Here I’ve written my thoughts on why Thankfulness is mindfulness

Of course its a hard task, and 90% I suck at bringing awareness, but when I do, I always seem to go back to joyfulness and Love.

And this is my new intention- to do small things with Love. This is what Mother Teresa said, and now I know what she meant.

11. Follow the practice of making list

Making lists is another small habit which simplifies my life because it helps me organize my life better.

I make lists for everything and I have sticky notes and my diary always close to me.

Here are the 12 lists to make to get your life organized.

And 9 steps to finally get your life together

12. Clear inbox regularly

I feel everything is a reflection of our life and life state. People say, only your inner life matters. People only say focus on the inside, but I don’t agree with it quite right.

If you want to make change on the inside, start with your outer physical environment too. Of course you cannot change people and circumstances, but you can change what other things that are under your control- like your phone, your messy room, your cluttered bedside etc.

I follow the practice of clearing my emails regularly and decluttering my phone from time to time. I can’t operate properly in a messy phone.

Believe me, these small things do have a significant impact on our life state.

13. Make Space for Silence

There are many things that help me make my life simple, but I don’t want to go on and on. Lastly, I would just want to say that silence is another thing that has helped me simplify my life.

It is only in silence that we get to meet our truest self. Only in silence, we get to connect with our innermost self. That is why meditation is so important and it is my daily practice even if just for 10 minutes. It is included in my morning rituals.

Silence simplifies and helps me slow down. Noise and distractions rushes and stresses.

Sometimes its hard to find time, but its as if my heart itself calls for some silent time and I have to just sit down and close my eyes. I love listening to peaceful music, actually listening to every note of the music. This too becomes like meditation itself.

My favorite go to playlist on Spotify for listening to calming music is Buddha’s Flute music

So these are some of the rules I follow for a simple life. For me, living a simple life is more about habits that help you simplify and about doing things that make you feel good from the inside.

How the Greatest Mathematical Mind of the 20th Century Proved the Existence of God

May 1, 2022 | by Dr. Joshua M. Moritz

That time a math genius proved God and you never heard about it.

Albert Einstein would often remark that he went to his office at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study “just to have the privilege of walking home with Kurt Gödel.” A good friend of Einstein, Gödel was the most brilliant and influential mathematician and logician of the 20th century. A master of proofs who ran non-Euclidean circles around the most brilliant minds of his day, Gödel devastated philosophical paradigms with the theorems he developed, and he laid bare long-held assumptions and cherished axioms as fundamentally unprovable. Gödel also mathematically demonstrated something that many thought was beyond the purview of proof—namely, the existence of God.

Does 1+1= 2?

Once upon a time, two of the 20th century’s most influential mathematical minds, Bertrand Russell and Alfred N. Whitehead, attempted to prove that 1+1=2. Their Principia Mathematica, the 20th century’s most ambitious work of mathematics, endeavored to describe a set of axioms and inference rules in symbolic logic from which all mathematical truths could, in principle, be proven. After 378 pages, they were able to talk about how one could prove that 1+1=2, but they couldn’t actually do it because they hadn’t managed to define “addition” in a logically consistent way.

Around the same time, mathematician David Hilbert wanted to develop a logical system that included all correct mathematical reasoning for any particular mathematical area and to prove that it contained no contradictions. In response, Gödel published a series of papers showing why Russell, Whitehead, and Hilbert’s quests for mathematical completeness were doomed to fail. Gödel proved definitively that neither the Principia Mathematica (nor any other attempt) could ever prove 1+1=2 in an internally consistent, logical way. In his incompleteness theorems, Gödel showed that mathematics alone could not establish the logical consistency of mathematics through mathematical proofs. Because one always has to make unprovable assumptions about one’s fundamental axioms, all mathematical systems are incomplete, and every mathematical system will have some statements that can never be proven.

Using mathematics that revolutionized the world of logic and science, Gödel showed that there is more to truth than can be captured by proof.

Gödel’s incompleteness theorems show that if a formal system is 1. finitely specified, 2. large enough to include arithmetic, and 3. consistent, then it is incomplete. His groundbreaking logical demonstration—that all mathematical systems have limits—was a lesson in humility to the “Logical Positivists” of Gödel’s day, who asserted that scientific and mathematical investigations of the universe could discover all truths and have no limits. Gödel showed that if science is based on mathematics, and mathematics cannot discover all truths, then science, in principle, cannot discover all truths. Using mathematics that revolutionized the world of logic and science, Gödel showed that there is more to truth than can be captured by proof.

Is there any proof that God exists?

Having demonstrated the incompleteness of all mathematical systems, Gödel also sought to show that the universe would be incomplete and inconsistent without an afterlife and a creator God. Gödel reasoned:

For it is by no means chaotic or random, but, as science shows, everything is permeated by remarkable regularity and order. Order is a form of rationality.

If the world is rationally constructed and has meaning, then there must be such a thing as an afterlife. For what sense would there be in creating a being (man), which has such a vast realm of possibilities for its own development and for relationships with others, and then not allowing it to realize even a thousandth of those possibilities? That would be almost like someone laying, with the greatest effort and expense, the foundations for a house and then letting it all go to seed again.

phys.org

But does one have reason to suppose that the world is rationally constructed? I believe so. For it is by no means chaotic or random, but, as science shows, everything is permeated by remarkable regularity and order. Order is a form of rationality.

How would one envision a second or another life? About that, there are naturally only guesses. However, it is interesting that it is precisely modern science that provides support for such a thing. For it shows that this world of ours, with all the stars and planets in it, had a beginning and most probably will also have an end (that is, it will literally come to “nothing”). But why, then, should there exist only this one world – for just as we one day found ourselves in this world, without knowing why and where from, so can the same thing be repeated in the same way in another world.

Within the context of seeking truth beyond proof, Gödel developed a mathematical argument to demonstrate the logical consistency and necessity of God’s existence. Gödel’s proof elaborated upon the ontological proof of Gottfried Leibniz, the founder of computer science who invented both calculus and binary code in the late 1600s. Gödel sought to fix the fundamental weaknesses of and remove inconsistencies from Leibniz’s proof as well as address all of the classic philosophical criticisms of previous ontological proofs, including Immanuel Kant‘s well-known objection that existence should not be treated as a predicate.

The ontological proof of Gödel harnesses higher-order mathematical logic to show that the existence of God is a necessary truth. “God” in Gödel’s proof is defined as a “God-like object.” In order for an object to be “God-like,” it must have every good or positive property. Also, a God-like object has no negative properties. In the context of Gödel’s proof, an object (x) has “the God-like property” if and only if for every property (φ), if φ is a positive property, then x has property φ. Because being “God-like” is a positive property, it is possible that that property exists in an object (x). After mathematically defining essential properties, Gödel then shows that it is necessary that there is an object x that has the God-like property. If a God-like object (i.e., God) has every good property, and necessary existence is a good property, then a God-like object (i.e., God) must exist.

While Gödel privately believed in God and read the Bible every Sunday, fear of ridicule from his academic peers made him reluctant to present his ontological proof publicly. Gödel thus never published his proof for the existence of God and only passed it on to a colleague and friend to publish because he believed he was going to die.

Putting Gödel to the Test with AI

For many years Gödel’s work was inaccessible and difficult to assess because very few could reach the levels of mathematical, philosophical, and logical sophistication required even to understand it—let alone to evaluate it for logical and mathematical consistency. Recently, with the help of Artificial Intelligence specially designed to evaluate higher-order logic and advanced theoretical mathematics, researchers decided to put Gödel’s ontological proof for the existence of God to the test.

Demonstrating the consistency of Gödel’s ontological proof, AI researchers concluded that “from Gödel’s premises, the computer proved: necessarily, there exists God” and also that “this God-like entity is unique, i.e., monotheism is a consequence of Gödel’s theory.” The AI also showed that “prominent objections to his proof…are currently not on a par with Gödel’s work…with respect to technical precision and persuasive power.” From this research, it is clear that Gödel’s ontological argument succeeds in that “it shows that Belief in a (God-like) supreme being is not trivially irrational. There are consistent axiomatizations that non-trivially entail the necessary existence of a God-like being.”

Yet the results of such AI calculations about metaphysics still rely on fundamental assumptions regarding the mathematical axioms that one chooses in the first place. As the AI researchers reflect, “as for any axiomatization…it remains a ‘matter of faith to believe in the truth of the proposed axioms in the actual universe.” This, of course, would come as no surprise to Gödel—as it was he, after all, who conclusively demonstrated to the world that all mathematical and scientific endeavors are ultimately unprovable and that such endeavors always require a leap of faith to get off the metaphysical ground.

7 Ways to Stop Violence at Every Age

Understanding, preventing, and effectively
treating violence

by Lisa Firestone Ph.D.

When you see an image of a violent adult, it’s hard to imagine the innocent baby they once were. Is there such thing as being born violent? Are there really “bad seeds” when it comes to human life?

Like so many qualities, violence involves an interaction between genetics and the environment. We may not be able to alter the DNA we are born with, but we can strongly influence how these genes are expressed. With all the factors proven to contribute to violence, we can no longer say that violent individuals are just “born that way.” There is a lot we can do to prevent violence, and hardly anyone at any age is hopeless or beyond help.

Violence is the result of a combination of biological, social, and psychological factors, especially those that increase exposure to vulnerability, shame, and humiliation. Preventing violence must involve the opposite: making sure people feel safe, cared about, and connected, while ensuring they have a healthy and realistic sense of self-esteem and self-worth.

Many environmental factors can contribute to violence. These include adverse childhood events such as abuse, neglect, trauma, loss, and abandonment. Victims of poverty, children who are missing basic necessities and who struggle with poor healthcare or nutrition are more likely to encounter or engage in violence.

A mother I knew raised twin boys who lost their father at a young age. Working two jobs to scrape by to support her family, she had little choice but to frequently leave her sons on their own. One of the twins buried his head in books and found education as his refuge. The other boy turned to a gang for companionship and violence as an outlet for his inner turmoil. This combination of trauma and neglect, though unintentional, became a breeding ground for violent behavior. Without a constructive outlet—like school, counseling, or an available parental figure—one of her sons faced a heavy social and emotional struggle and followed a path toward violence and crime, while the other was able to channel his struggle into something positive.

So how can we prevent children from becoming violent? And how can we treat people who’ve already demonstrated violent tendencies? Here are some of the Do’s of stopping violence among children, adolescents, and adults. This list is addressed to parents, but it truly applies to any influential figure in a child’s life.

Forming an Attachment

Make sure children have caring adults in their lives. Research has shown that kids need a minimum of five caring adults to help them grow up happy and healthy. It isn’t just parents who have an impact on their kids. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, counselors, and family friends can serve as positive role models to our kids. Parents can hurt themselves and their children by creating an isolated environment around them. Encourage kind, compassionate, and ethical people to be involved in your child’s lives from the get-go.

For both children and adults who show violent tendencies, it is important to help them form attachments. Attaching to someone, whether from their family or a rehabilitation program, has been proven to help even highly violent individuals to make a real change. Research shows that helping violent prisoners develop attachment can prevent violence.

Developing a Conscience

Help your children develop a conscience by A) being attuned to them, B) not being violent toward or in front of them, C) providing a secure, safe base for them, and D) repairing when you slip up. We all make mistakes as parents, but openly admitting and apologizing for these mistakes shows your kids that you are human, that they are not to blame, and that they too should demonstrate care and concern.

A formerly violent inmate I interviewed for the documentary film Voices of Violence stated that in the time he spent in an intensive therapeutic prison program, he’d “grown a conscience.”

Developing Empathy

Help your child develop empathy. Imagine the scene of your child hitting another child in the park. In that moment, you’d probably insist they say sorry, but what do you do to make them feel empathetic? Saying sorry can be meaningless if a child doesn’t mean it. At these times, ask your child to describe how he or she would feel being hit. This helps the child to feel compassion and sympathy, while understanding what it really means to hurt someone.

Prisoners can be taught empathy through effective intervention programs like victim impact groups, where victims of violence speak to prisoners about their experience. The San Francisco prison system embraced this technique and employed a treatment strategy that reduced recidivism (criminal re-offenses of released prisoner) by 80 percent.

Getting Attention

Give kids attention—never give them the silent or avoidant treatment. Adolescents acting up need more attention, not less. In juvenile correction facilities, they’ve found that solitary confinement is the worst thing for a teen who is behaving badly. Depriving a kid in need of services and contact hurts them; their behavior indicates they need more adult contact. By isolating them, when their acting out is to seek attention, albeit negative attention, we continue the punishment cycle. Intensifying treatment when adolescents act out breaks the punishment cycle, while reducing their likelihood of becoming violent. This has proven to be effective even in adolescents with psychopathic tendencies.

Building Self-Esteem

Help your child find something they are good at and offer real praise for those achievements. False praise inflates a person’s vanity but does little to enhance their real sense of self-worth or self-esteem. Yet acknowledging children for honest accomplishments and true abilities helps them to know their value.

Vanity has actually been found to contribute to violence. Conversely, prisoners given the opportunity to gain a sense of value by helping other people has highly positive results. In the Restorative Justice model, prisoners are given this opportunity, with many people who run the program having previously been participants in the program.

Avoiding Harsh Punishment

Don’t punish a child harshly. When we are violent, abusive, or insensitive to our children, we lead by example. We teach them to be unsympathetic, out of control, and at the whim of their anger. We must be attuned to how we discipline our children. Make sure our punishment comes out of care and concern for how they feel and behave, and not from our own emotional issues.

Harsh punishment in prisons turns these institutions into what James Gilligan has called “graduate schools for crime.” By focusing our efforts on education and treatment instead of punishment, we prevent many prisoners from becoming violent upon release; we save potential victims of future violence; and we save taxpayers the money they would spend toward re-imprisoning repeat offenders.

Learning Calming Techniques

Teach your children how to calm down when they’re upset. The best way to do this is to lead by example. It’s important to demonstrate your own resilience, problem-solving, and coping strategies in front of your children. This does not mean acting tough or hiding your feelings. It means demonstrating healthy techniques for handling conflict and emotion in your own life and encouraging them to do the same.

San Francisco’s Manalive program has been successful in teaching male prisoners techniques to identify when they get triggered and to hit the pause button at those moments of stress. These men are then able to make reasonable decisions. They no longer feed their aggressive emotions with destructive thoughts toward others, which, in turn, stops them from committing acts of violence. Programs like Manalive have helped rehabilitate men who’ve been violent by teaching them to communicate and to “get in touch with their emotions and gain compassion and forgiveness for themselves and others.”

On a societal and political level, we must not overlook those struggling and work harder to provide services to help educate this population. We know that in the case of prisoners who’ve been jailed for violent crimes, the factors proven to reduce recidivism include therapy, education, teaching professional skills, and substance abuse treatment. On a personal level, whether we are aiming to prevent a child from becoming violent or to steer a person away from a life already touched by violence, we must foster our own compassion and faith in a human being’s goodness and potential.

Dr. James Gilligan wrote in his book Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic, “The self cannot survive without love. The self starved of love dies. That is how violence can cause the death of the self even when it does not kill the body. The two possible sources of love for the self are love from others, and one’s own love for oneself. Children who fail to receive sufficient love from others fail to build those reserves of self-love, and the capacity for self-love, which enable them to survive the inevitable rejections and humiliations which even the most fortunate of people cannot avoid.”

The solution to the problem of violence is never to turn our backs, but to keep our hearts and minds open to how we can individually affect change—and that change starts with how we raise our children from the day they are born.
