“We were a family.
How’d it break up and come apart,
so that now we’re turned against each other?
Each standing in the other’s light.
How’d we lose that good that was given us?
Let it slip away. Scattered it, careless.
What’s keeping us from reaching out,
touching the Glory?”

“Let’s invite one another in.
Maybe then we can begin to fear less,
to make fewer wrong assumptions,
to let go of the biases and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the ways we are the same.
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s not about where you get yourself in the end.
There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard,
in owning your unique story,
in using your authentic voice.
And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others.
This, for me, is how we become.”

So read the whole section for each supplement.

To get more in-depth information, read the related articles within each section.

Also, when you look to buy, you will find a lot of choices.

We urge you to read our guide on how to choose a good supplement.
1. Citicoline: Potent Brain Protector

Citicoline is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell of your body.

It’s less widely known that many other brain supplements that made this list, yet it’s one of the best brain boosters available.

Citicoline helps build healthy brain cell membranes.

It improves blood flow to the brain and also brain plasticity, your brain’s ability to change throughout your lifetime.

It increases brain energy by firing up your mitochondria, the powerhouse of each cell.

Citicoline reduces the harmful effects of free radical damage and inflammation, two major causes of brain aging.

It raises levels of two important neurotransmitters, acetylcholine and dopamine.

Acetylcholine is the primary brain chemical involved with memory and learning.

Low acetylcholine is implicated in serious neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, and multiple sclerosis.

Dopamine is linked to motivation, productivity, mood, and your “pleasure-reward” system.

Citicoline supplements can significantly improve memory, concentration, focus, and attention.

Doctors throughout Europe prescribe citicoline for serious neurological disorders such as age-related memory loss, stroke, brain injury, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s.

Citicoline is sometimes sold as a single-ingredient supplement, but is often included in nootropic brain supplement formulas.

One study comparing citicoline to several popular nootropics concluded that it improved memory and cognition as well as the study drug piracetam.

Consider citicoline if you take any medications that are anticholinergic, those that work by blocking the action of acetylcholine.

A surprising number of drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC), fall into this category.

A good rule of thumb is that any medication whose name starts with “anti” is likely to lower your acetylcholine level.

This includes antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antibiotics, antispasmodics, and antihypertensives.
Citicoline Dosage

A typical dose of citicoline is 250 to 1,000 mg, twice a day, for a total intake of 500 to 2,000 mg.

A daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 mg is recommended to support thinking skills.

Citicoline: An Impressive Brain Protector and Enhancer

When looking for a citicoline supplement, you are likely to come across CDP-choline (cytidine 5′-diphosphocholine).

This is simply another name for citicoline; these are two names for the same compound.

You may also see the brand name Cognizin.

This is a highly bioavailable form of citicoline that’s got research to back up its claims as a cognitive enhancer.
Citicoline Side Effects and Warnings

Side effects of citicoline include insomnia, headache, diarrhea, low or high blood pressure, nausea, blurred vision, and chest pains

Do not mix citicoline with levodopa, a medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease, without talking to your doctor.

Citicoline can amplify this drug’s effectiveness which may require a change in its dosage.
2. Curcumin: Nutritional “Gold” for Your Brain

Curcumin is the main bioactive compound in the Indian spice turmeric (Curcuma longa).

It’s responsible for turmeric’s brilliant gold color and most of its health benefits.
curcumin supplements and turmeric powder
Curcumin powder and capsules.

Curcumin protects your brain in an impressive number of ways.

It increases levels of dopamine and serotonin, the “happiness brain chemical.”

In fact, curcumin is as effective for depression as the popular antidepressant Prozac.

It increases blood flow to the brain as effectively as physical exercise.

Curcumin reduces the compulsiveness and associated memory loss of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Impressively, curcumin was found to improve both memory and attention in healthy seniors within an hour after taking a single dose!

These study participants additionally showed significant improvements in working memory, energy, mood, and stress after taking curcumin for one month.

Curcumin’s potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce brain inflammation and break up brain plaques associated with Alzheimer’s.

Seniors in India who consume turmeric as a regular part of their diet have some of the lowest rates of Alzheimer’s in the world.
Curcumin and Turmeric Dosages

You can get your curcumin from either curcumin or turmeric supplements.

A typical turmeric dosage is 500 mg, one to three times per day.

The recommended daily dose of curcumin is 80 mg to 500 mg, provided that the supplement manufacturer has taken steps to enhance bioavailability.
The Impressive Brain Benefits of Curcumin Supplements

Curcumin supplements are poorly absorbed, but there are measures that overcome this problem.

The addition of piperine, a compound found in black pepper, is one of the most common ways to enhance bioavailability.

Its addition can increase curcumin absorption by a remarkable 2,000%.
Curcumin and Turmeric Side Effects and Warnings

Turmeric consumed as a spice in food is very safe.

Turmeric supplements can cause nausea and diarrhea, especially in high doses.

Both turmeric and curcumin supplements have quite a number of possible side effects, interactions, and warnings.

These supplements can interact with medicines like aspirin, NSAID painkillers, statins, diabetes drugs, blood pressure medicines, and blood thinners.

They may also interact with natural supplements with blood-thinning properties such as ginkgo, ginseng, and garlic.

The piperine often added to turmeric and curcumin supplements can also increase the side effects of a number of drugs.

However, you can increase the bioavailability of curcumin and turmeric supplements by taking them with phosphatidylserine instead.

If you take any medications, check for possible interactions between them and turmeric or curcumin with a reputable online interaction checker.

 Acetyl-l-Carnitine: For More Mental Energy

Acetyl-l-carnitine (ALCAR) is an amino acid that increases both mental and physical energy. (30)

It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting your brain from free radical damage. (31)

ALCAR is a precursor of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter of memory and learning.

It also increases the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, both of which play a role in depression. (32)

In fact, acetyl-l-carnitine is a fast-acting antidepressant that usually brings some relief within a week. (33)

It improves mental clarity, focus, mood, processing speed, and memory and has strong anti-aging effects on the brain.

It can be a helpful adjunct for chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s.

One study found that acetyl-l-carnitine stabilizes the proteins which produce the neurofibrillary tangles found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

It increases the insulin sensitivity of brain cells to help them utilize blood glucose, the brain’s main fuel source.

There’s evidence that it may prevent brain damage from excessive alcohol intake.

The generally recommended dose range is from 630 to 2,500 mg per day to up to 4,000 mg for treating Alzheimer’s patients.

20 Memory Supplements That Really Work

When buying a brain supplement, look for acetyl-l-carnitine rather than l-carnitine.

ALCAR is a form of l-carnitine that more readily crosses into the brain to better support cognitive function.
Acetyl-l-Carnitine Side Effects and Warnings

Acetyl-l-carnitine is generally considered safe but there are a few side effects, mainly digestive upset, restlessness, or a fishy body odor. (43)

If you take a blood thinner such as coumadin, avoid taking ALCAR as it can increase the drug’s blood-thinning effects.

There’s some concern that acetyl-l-carnitine interferes with thyroid hormone, so discuss this with your doctor if you have low thyroid function.

Bacopa: For Balanced Brain Chemistry

Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri) is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal remedy.

Its use as a nerve and brain tonic for improving memory, learning, and concentration dates back at least 3,000 years.
bacopa monnieri
Bacopa monnieri flowers.

According to legend, it was used by ancient scholars to help them memorize lengthy hymns and scriptures.

It increases cerebral blood flow, delivering more oxygen, nutrients, and glucose to the brain.

When tested against two very different kinds of cognitive enhancers — the ancient herbal remedy ginseng and the popular smart drug Modafinil — bacopa came out on top.

Bacopa is among the handful of herbs considered adaptogenic.

Adaptogens have the ability to lower stress and increase energy without being either sedating or stimulating.

In this way, adaptogens act like a thermostat that keeps you in an emotional comfort zone.

Bacopa works, in part, by balancing the levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and GABA, while reducing the level of the stress hormone cortisol.

It’s this ability to restore balance that makes bacopa an excellent choice if you are looking for a natural cognitive-enhancing supplement that also alleviates stress, anxiety, or depression.
Bacopa Dosage

So far, about a dozen bioactive compounds have been found in bacopa, the most important being bacopaside A and bacopaside B.

Look for a supplement with a standardized content of 55% bacopasides.

Bacopa Benefits: 12 Reasons It’s Good for Your Brain

A typical dose is 300 mg of bacopa per day.

One brand of bacopa that has studies to support its use as a cognitive enhancer is KeenMind.
Bacopa Side Effects and Warnings

Bacopa is considered very safe, safe enough to give to children. (51)

Side effects of bacopa are rare, but the most common ones are dry mouth and digestive upset.

These can largely be avoided by taking it along with meals. (52)

Traditionally, bacopa is administered as a food that is cooked with ghee (clarified butter).

Bacopa should not be combined with antihistamines, antidepressants, glaucoma medications, drugs taken for Alzheimer’s, or thyroid hormones.

American Ginseng: Best-in-Class Brain Booster

Ginseng may be a classical Asian herb, but American ginseng is now considered the best in the world.

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) belongs to the same genus as Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), but is a unique species.
ginseng root in a bowl
Ginseng root.

In an ironic twist, the Chinese now prefer American ginseng for its superior quality and ability to upgrade brain function.

American ginseng is mostly cultivated in Wisconsin and Canada, where growing conditions are ideal for encouraging a higher concentration of ginseng’s active ingredients, ginsenosides.

Cereboost is a patent-pending extract derived from American ginseng with clinical studies to support its effectiveness as a cognitive enhancer.

Study participants given a mental aptitude test after ingesting Cereboost performed significantly better.

It worked quickly to improve memory, mental clarity, and sharpness within just a few hours after taking a single dose. (57)

Cereboost is neuroprotective and increases acetylcholine levels. (58)

American ginseng is a better choice than Asian ginseng if you tend towards anxiety since it is less stimulating. (59)

Like bacopa, American ginseng acts as an adaptogen, promoting physical strength and mental energy while dialing down the damaging effects of stress.

It also reduces postprandial hypoglycemia, a common underlying cause of anxiety. (60)
American Ginseng Dosage

Standard doses have not been established, but a typical dose of American ginseng is 100 to 200 mg daily. (61)

Brain supplements that contain Cereboost usually contain 200 mg of American ginseng.

8 Ways Ginseng Works for Memory and Brain Health

American ginseng supplements are available as capsules, tablets, powders, and liquid extracts.

You can also buy tea bags, loose bulk tea, and dried roots that are used to make tea or are added to cooked foods.
American Ginseng Side Effects and Interactions

American ginseng can cause some side effects such as diarrhea, itching, insomnia, headache, and nervousness.

Since its ginsenosides can act like estrogen, do not take American ginseng if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a hormone-sensitive cancer.

Discuss taking American ginseng with your doctor if you take an MAOI antidepressant, diabetic medication, or immune suppressant since it can affect the effectiveness of these drugs.

Alpha-GPC: Top Memory Enhancer

Alpha-GPC (alpha-glycerophosphocholine) is a synthetic form of choline.

Choline is an essential nutrient for brain development, healthy brain cells, and neurotransmitter formation.

It is a precursor of acetylcholine, the brain chemical of learning and memory.

Unfortunately, choline supplements do not effectively enter the brain.

However, the alpha-GPC form quickly and efficiently moves choline into the brain where it’s used to form brain cell membranes and stimulate the growth of new brain cells.

Alpha-GPC also increases levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), the neurotransmitter associated with relaxation.

Signs of low GABA include being easily overstimulated, overwhelmed, and stressed out.

Alpha-GPC studies show that it consistently improves memory and attention span in people of all ages, while warding off age-related mental decline.

Alpha-GPC is sold as a memory supplement throughout much of the world.

In Europe, it is used as a prescription medication for Alzheimer’s, helping to increase acetylcholine levels.

Alzheimer’s patients’ have low levels of acetylcholine along with fewer acetycholine receptors.

It can also help the brain recover after a stroke, injury, or transient ischemic attack.
Alpha-GPC Dosage

A typical dose of alpha-GPC is 300 to 600 mg, but the ideal standard dose is yet to be determined.

In almost all studies on mental decline, participants were given 400 mg, three times a day.

Balancing Neurotransmitters to Take Control of Your Life
Alpha-GPC Side Effects and Warnings

Alpha-GPC is generally considered safe, but possible side effects include headache, insomnia, dizziness, mental confusion, heartburn, and skin rash.

Alpha-GPC supplements are derived from either soy or eggs, two of the most common food allergens, so be mindful if you have a known food allergy.

The only known drug interaction is with scopolamine, a drug often used for motion sickness and nausea following surgery.
 Lion’s Mane: A “Smart” Mushroom

Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus), also known as yamabushitake, is an edible mushroom native to parts of Asia, North America, and Europe.

It’s been used medicinally and as a culinary delicacy for thousands of years.
lion’s mane mushroom growing on a log
Lion’s mane mushroom.

Now it’s sold as a brain supplement.

It’s been said that lion’s mane can impart “nerves of steel and the memory of a lion.”

World-renowned fungi expert Paul Stamets calls it the “first smart mushroom.”

Lion’s mane is a popular nootropic — a substance that improves mental functions such as memory, intelligence, motivation, attention, and concentration — while simultaneously making your brain healthier.

It excels at improving cognitive function and treating neurological disorders.

Lion’s mane contains two unique groups of compounds, hericenones and erinacines, that stimulate the formation of nerve growth factor (NGF).

NGF is a protein that is crucial to the growth and maintenance of certain types of neurons.

Lion’s mane can also be helpful for anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
Lion’s Mane Dosage

Optimal dosages have not yet been established, but a typical dose of lion’s mane extract is 1,000 mg taken three times a day.

In one study, seniors with mild cognitive impairment, which can be a precursor to dementia, experienced significant cognitive improvement taking 3,000 mg of lion’s mane powder daily.

How Lion’s Mane Mushroom Benefits Your Brain

Lion’s mane is available in capsules, powder, liquid tincture, or tea.

You may even find it fresh in Asian or gourmet food stores.
Lion’s Mane Side Effects and Interactions

Lion’s mane is extremely safe.

The only known side effect is itchy skin which is believed to be caused by the increase in nerve growth factor.

8. Magnesium L-Threonate: Patented Brain Mineral

Magnesium is an essential dietary mineral that is required for over 600 metabolic functions.

Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is the second most common nutritional deficiency in developed countries.

Signs of magnesium deficiency include brain fog, lack of focus, inability to handle stress, insomnia, caffeine addiction, and generally feeling tired but wired.

Magnesium supplementation has proven beneficial for numerous mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

There are many forms of magnesium to choose from, but only magnesium l-threonate readily crosses the blood-brain barrier.

Its unique ability to permeate brain cell membranes and elevate magnesium concentrations in the brain makes it an excellent choice for improving memory, attention, depression, and anxiety.

Look for supplements that contain Magtein, a patented brand of magnesium l-threonate that’s a proven cognitive enhancer.
Magnesium Dosage

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for magnesium is generally 420 mg for men and 320 mg for women, but that can vary slightly depending on age.

The manfacturer of Magtein suggests taking 1,000 mg twice a day for optimal cognitive benefits.

Magnesium L-Threonate: Breakthrough Brain Supplement

This dose isn’t as high as it sounds, since only a fraction of Magtein is elemental magnesium, the amount of pure magnesium available in a supplement.

According to the Original Formula Magtein label, 2,000 mg of magnesium l-threonate yields just 144 mg of elemental magnesium.
Magnesium Side Effects and Interactions

Magnesium can cause digestive upset and loose stools, particularly if you take too much or take inexpensive forms of magnesium such as magnesium oxide or magnesium sulfate.

You should not take these anyway since they are the least bioavailable forms of magnesium.

Magnesium sulfate, the kind found in Epsom salts, can cause dramatic diarrhea and disrupt your electrolyte balance, leading to a potentially serious condition known as hypermagnesemia.

There are currently 32 official FDA reports of magnesium sulfate triggering brain fog, short-term memory loss, amnesia, blackouts, and other kinds of mental distress.

The only reported side effects of magnesium l-threonate are headaches and drowsiness the first week or so.

Discuss taking magnesium with your doctor if you take antibiotics, high blood pressure medications, osteoporosis medications, or muscle relaxants.

Magnesium can affect the effectiveness of these drugs.

Tryptophan: Proven Mood Booster

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that’s a precursor to serotonin.

Serotonin plays a large role in mood, sleep, learning, and appetite control.
diagram of the tryptophan-serotonin synthesis pathway
The pathway of tryptophan-serotonin synthesis. (Image courtesy of Dr. Katherine Chung)

A low serotonin level is widely believed to be a major cause of depression.

The most popular antidepressant medications like Prozac and Zoloft are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), thought to work by making more serotonin available in the brain.

You can increase serotonin levels naturally by providing more of its building blocks in the form of tryptophan.

By increasing serotonin levels, tryptophan can improve the quality of life for those with a wide variety of brain-related and mental health issues.

Studies have found tryptophan to be as effective for depression as antidepressant drugs.

Tryptophan has been found useful for reducing general anxiety, social anxiety disorder, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and seasonal affective disorder.

Low levels of tryptophan are associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Children with ADHD have 50% lower than average blood levels of tryptophan.

Low tryptophan has also been linked to memory loss and other measures of cognitive impairment.
Tryptophan Dosage

There is no official recommended dosage for tryptophan and suggested doses vary widely.

As little as 250 mg has been found to improve the quality of sleep.
Use Tryptophan to Boost Serotonin for Better Mental Health

On the other hand, up to 12 grams per day has been suggested for depression.

Most supplement manufacturers suggest a daily dose of 1,000 to 1,500 mg.

We suggest starting with 500 mg a day, then working up to a higher dose.
Tryptophan Side Effects and Interactions

The most common tryptophan side effects are digestive upset, loss of appetite, headache, and drowsiness.

Tryptophan should not be taken with SSRI antidepressants.

When taken together, they can cause a potentially serious condition known as serotonin syndrome.

Tryptophan should also not be taken with drugs with a sedating effect such as Ambien, Ativan, Valium, and Ultram.
Vinpocetine: A Natural “Smart Drug”

Vinpocetine is a relatively new brain booster that blurs the line between brain supplement and smart drug.

It’s based on vincamine, a chemical found in periwinkle (Vinca minor).
periwinkle flowers
Periwinkle, source of vincamine.

This flowering vine has been used since medieval times to treat headaches, memory loss, and vertigo.

Vinpocetine supplements are usually taken to improve memory, overcome brain fog, increase mental clarity, protect the brain against aging, and promote overall mental well-being.

It rapidly enters the brain to increase blood flow, decrease brain inflammation, protect against free radical damage, and balance neurotransmitter levels.

Its ability to protect the brain from degeneration makes it a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s.

Vinpocetine can help to prevent the short-term memory loss that often accompanies benzodiazepine anti-anxiety drugs.

It improves the brain’s ability to use glucose, its main source of energy, after a stroke.

In some parts of the world, vinpocetine is available by prescription only.

Here in the US, it’s available as a brain supplement, at least for now.

The FDA has initiated proceedings to take vinpocetine off the shelves, not because there have been any safety issues, but because they believe it should be classified as a drug and not a supplement.

While studies show that vinpocetine looks like a promising treatment for mental decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s, there’s not a lot of research yet to back up claims that it makes cognitively healthy adults smarter.
Vinpocetine Dosage

Most clinical studies on vinpocetine have used a dose of 10 mg, three times daily.

A good place to start is to take 5 mg with each meal.
Cognitive Enhancers Compared: Brain Supplements, Smart Drugs & Nootropics

Then you can work up to as high as 20 mg with each meal for maximum neuroprotective benefits.

Avoid taking vinpocetine on an empty stomach since it’s absorbed up to 100% better with food.
Vinpocetine Side Effects and Warnings

Vinpocetine is generally considered safe with few side effects.

Potential side effects include digestive upset, insomnia, headache, dizziness, nervousness, skin rash, and flushing.

However, it’s advised that you avoid vinpocetine if you take a blood thinner like warfarin (Coumadin) or any over-the-counter medications that can interfere with clotting such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
Huperzine A: Powerful Memory Remedy

Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata) is a small plant native to parts of Asia that’s a traditional Chinese treatment for improving memory and circulation and reducing inflammation.

The main active compound in Chinese club moss is an alkaloid called huperzine A.
chinese club moss
Chinese club moss, source of huperzine A.

Huperzine A works mainly by raising acetylcholine levels, a neurotransmitter involved with learning, memory, sleep cycle regulation, and other brain functions.

Huperzine A works by the same mechanism as the popular Alzheimer’s drug Aricept.

They both work by inhibiting an enzyme (acetylcholinesterase) that deactivates acetylcholine.
How Acetylcholine Deficiency Impacts Memory

Huperzine A shows promise for delaying symptoms of Alzheimer’s, especially in the early stages.

It protects the patient’s brain against free radical damage and environmental toxins while promoting new brain cell generation.

Huperzine A is so powerful that it’s been given the status of an approved drug for treating vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s in China.
Huperzine A Dosage

The general recommended dosage is 50 to 200 mcg twice daily and can be taken on an empty stomach.
Huperzine A Side Effects and Warnings

Although huperzine A is a naturally occurring compound, it’s not without side effects.

Reported side effects are significant and include insomnia, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, blurred vision, slurred speech, restlessness, anorexia, muscle twitching, cramps, incontinence, high blood pressure, and slowed heart rate.

Huperzine A does not mix well with antihistamines, antidepressants, the Alzheimer’s drug Aricept, or the motion sickness drug scopolamine.  Ginkgo: Timeless Brain Tonic

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is one of the most widely used natural remedies in the world.

It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine.
ginkgo leaves and pills and mortar and pestle
Ginkgo leaves and supplement tablets.

Ginkgo increases circulation to the brain, balances brain chemistry, and protects the brain from free radical damage.

It’s considered so effective that it’s sometimes prescribed as a medication in Europe.

But not all of ginkgo’s reported benefits have held up to the latest scientific scrutiny.

Unexpectedly, two major studies concluded that ginkgo does not improve memory or other cognitive functions in healthy adults.

But this does not make ginkgo useless as a brain supplement.

And, of course, you may decide that its long history of use outweighs the latest scientific findings.

Ginkgo has been proven beneficial for treating stress and anxiety by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

It reliably improves short-term memory in seniors.
Benefits of Ginkgo Biloba for Memory & More

Ginkgo reduces ADHD symptoms in children and teens, but not as effectively as the ADHD drug Ritalin.

It can increase the turnover of both serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters linked to depression.

And lastly, for those diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s, ginkgo shows promise for improving memory and day-to-day quality of life.
Ginkgo Dosage

A typical ginkgo dose is 40 to 120 mg, three times a day.

Start with a low dose and take with meals to avoid gastrointestinal distress.
Ginkgo Side Effects and Warnings

Known ginkgo side effects include digestive upset, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and restlessness.

Ginkgo should not be taken with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants such as Prozac or Zoloft, since together they can cause serotonin syndrome.

Ginkgo reacts badly with a slew of medications.

Drugs.com lists over 250 of them.

If you take any medications, talk to your doctor or pharmacist, or visit Drugs.com to check for Ginkgo biloba drug interactions before taking this supplement.
DHA: Critical Brain Cell Building Block

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 essential fatty acid that is not optional if you are seeking optimal brain performance.

Omega-3 deficiency is widespread, linked to dozens of diseases, and contributes to 96,000 preventable deaths per year.
fish oil capsules
Capsules of fish oil, a source of DHA.

Omega-3 fats are so important to health that more than 36,000 studies have been published on their health benefits!

And of all the omega-3s, DHA is the most important one for your brain.

Omega-3 fats are harder to get from diet alone since few people regularly eat the main dietary sources — wild-caught, cold water, oily fish like salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines.

DHA is a major building block of the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain where higher level functions occur.

It also plays an important role in brain cell communication.

Low DHA levels have been linked to depression, ADHD, serious psychiatric disorders, and a measurable decrease in brain volume.

Memory loss, depression, mood swings, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and attention deficit disorder have all been found to improve with DHA supplementation.

Seniors with high levels of DHA have a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s.
DHA and Fish Oil Dosages

DHA is sometimes sold as a single-ingredient supplement, but most commonly it is included as a major component in fish oil or krill oil supplements.

Experts generally recommend 500 to 1000 mg of total omega-3s per day to maintain health and avoid deficiency, but therapeutic doses up to 3 grams are generally considered safe.

DHA Supplements: Why They’re Critical for Your Brain

A US National Institutes of Health workshop that included omega-3 experts from around the world determined that 220 mg of DHA is the minimum dose that should be taken for optimal health.

But it’s safe and often beneficial to take more — up to 1,000 mg per day.
DHA and Fish Oil Side Effects and Warnings

DHA is considered generally safe.

It may increase blood sugar in diabetics and lower blood pressure in those with hypertension which can alter your need for medication.

Fish oil can increase the risk of bleeding when taken with aspirin or blood thinners, but DHA alone does not seem to affect blood clotting. Phosphatidylserine: Versatile Brain Enhancer

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid naturally found in high concentrations in the brain.

It is also a popular brain supplement for boosting memory, cognition, concentration, and learning.

Phosphatidylserine is a major component of human brain cell membranes.

By supporting brain cell membrane integrity, PS helps to keep toxins, pathogens, and other unwanted invaders out of your brain.

It normalizes the level of the stress hormone cortisol to reduce the effects of stress.

Phosphatidylserine is safe and effective for brains of all ages.

It can significantly improve attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children.

It is the primary ingredient in Vayarin, a medical food prescribed for children with ADHD.

It is a favorite memory supplement used by students to perform better on their exams.

Phosphatidylserine is protective against mental decline, can improve mood, and can help with depression, especially in seniors.

Numerous studies conclude that phosphatidylserine may be an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Notably, phosphatidylserine is the only brain supplement that’s received a qualified stamp of approval from the FDA for age-related cognitive decline and dementia in seniors.
Phosphatidylserine Dosage

The general recommended dose of phosphatidylserine is 100 mg, three times a day.

But doses of twice that, 600 mg per day, are considered safe.

6 Ways Phosphatidylserine Benefits Memory, Stress & Cognitive Decline

Phosphatidylserine is one of the few brain supplements with dosages determined for children.

A typical dose for children and young teens is 200 mg per day.
Phosphatidylserine Side Effects and Warnings

The most common side effects experienced with phosphatidylserine supplements are digestive upset and insomnia, particularly with high dosages.

Phosphatidylserine should be avoided if you take blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs.

It can decrease the effectiveness of antihistamines and antidepressants.

Do not take phosphatidylserine with drugs prescribed for Alzheimer’s, such as Aricept, Exelon, and Razadyne, without talking to your doctor.

Phosphatidylserine can alter these drugs’ effectiveness and magnify their side effects.

Phosphatidylserine supplements are almost always derived from soy.

If soy is a food you avoid, look for one extracted from sunflower oil instead.
15. L-Theanine: Meditation in a Cup or Capsule

L-theanine is an amino acid found in black and green teas (Camellia sinensis) that offers a truly unique set of brain benefits.

One of the ways it works is by altering your brainwave patterns.
pot of green tea
Green tea, a source of l-theanine.

L-theanine induces a desirable state of relaxed attentiveness similar to that achieved during meditation.

It sharpens focus, reduces stress, and imparts a sense of overall well-being.

L-theanine raises levels of several key neurotransmitters — serotonin, dopamine, and GABA — to promote recall, learning, motivation, and positive mood.

It makes you more resilient to stress and helps prevent anxiety.

It won’t make you drowsy, but can improve your quality of sleep.

L-theanine works synergistically with caffeine.

The combination of caffeine and l-theanine can help you perform mentally demanding tasks better than with caffeine alone.

And since l-theanine is relaxing, it won’t leave you edgy.

This unique caffeine-enhancing property makes l-theanine a popular supplement for those seeking optimal mental performance.

Some college students and biohackers use this caffeine-theanine combination in place of smart drugs.

L-theanine improves memory and cognition in seniors, even those diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment.

It is neuroprotective against stroke, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.
L-Theanine Dosage

The general recommended dosage for l-theanine is 200 to 400 mg per day.

Some people experience noticeable benefits with as little as 50 mg and almost everyone experiences some degree of relaxation with a 400 mg dose.

A mix of l-theanine and caffeine is a popular nootropic “stack” for boosting mood, focus, concentration, and alertness.

One popular name brand of l-theanine is Suntheanine.

This is a patented brand of pure theanine often used in studies when a standardized formula is required.
L-Theanine Side Effects and Interactions

L-theanine supplements are considered very safe.

The few reported adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal distress.

If you take high blood pressure medication, use l-theanine cautiously, since it can decrease your blood pressure and change your need for medication.

All essential vitamins and minerals play a vital role in brain function.

Some act as natural antidepressants or combat the effects of stress, while some are essential co-factors in neurotransmitter formation.

Many are antioxidants that protect the brain from the damaging effects of free radicals, inflammation, neurotoxins, and aging.

So before you start taking the brain supplements we’ve discussed here, make sure you’ve got your basic nutritional needs met.

It’s generally thought that vitamin deficiencies are a thing of the past, but that’s not true.

Up to 40% of Americans are deficient in vitamin B12,
77% in vitamin D, and 75% in the mineral magnesium.

Deficiencies in any of these can have a profound impact on your brain.

The Harvard School of Public Health advises all adults to take a multivitamin supplement as insurance to fill any nutritional gaps.

We think this is sound advice.

Pound for pound, your brain requires more nutrients than any other organ.

But processed food, factory farming practices, and the nutrient-draining stresses of modern life are just some of the factors that have created a perfect storm of sub-optimal nutrition.

Many studies confirm that taking just a multivitamin can improve memory and overall brain function while increasing longevity and reducing the risk of degenerative brain disease.

There are many reasons to take a brain supplement: to improve mood, memory, and concentration as well as to protect the brain against aging or to prevent or halt cognitive decline.

But there are endless substances and combinations to choose from.

Stick with supplements that are proven to work.

Recommended: Upgrading brain health is key to making your brain work better.

Mind Lab Pro is the brain supplement we recommend because, by boosting your brain health, it can help you:

Improve your mental clarity and focus.
Boost your memory and your ability to learn.
Increase your capacity to think critically, solve problems, and make decisions.

8 Safety and First Aid Tips for Kids

Calling 911

Little girl on phone

Shestock / Blend Images / Getty Images

As soon as kids can recognize the numbers, they can learn to call 911. It’s important to teach them that 911 is not a toy. Otherwise, you could find yourself talking to a police officer about why Junior was screaming, “My house is on fire!” at the dispatcher. And if the kids are carrying cell phones, they need to know how calling with the cell phone is different than the home phone.

Bleeding Control
Father helping son after bicycle fall. Kid with helmet

Susan Chiang / E+ / Getty Images

Pressure on a bleeding wound is usually enough to stop the flow of blood. Kids can be taught very early to put direct pressure on a cut. You don’t want Jimmy to wrap his shoestrings around his baby sis’s neck, so tell him not to do tourniquets.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

Kid rolling on grass

PhotoStock-Israel / Stockbyte / Getty Images

If the kids catch their clothes on fire, they need to put them out immediately. Teach them how to stop, drop, and roll. If outdoors, this is something that works better on grass than it does on concrete. If indoors, it’s better to do this on a hard surface than a carpet, where the risk of setting the home on fire is higher. Have the kids practice, so they’ll do this automatically if they need to.

Fire Game Plan

Woman turning smoke detector off

Alex Wilson / Getty Images

When the smoke alarms start beeping at 3 in the morning, you really must have a plan. It’s not enough that the kids wake up—they have to know where to go. If they have fire escape ladders in their rooms, do they know how to deploy the ladders? Do you plan to meet at the street corner? What if the kids get out at the back of the house and you get out at the front? All of these issues need to be decided in advance.

When to Teach Them CPR

child performing cpr

Elva Etienne / Getty Images

Can kids do CPR? The answer to that is different for every child. There’s no question that kids can learn CPR, and there’s no question that in true cardiac arrest, doing nothing is certain death. If you are going to teach the kids CPR, it’s extremely important to stress not practicing on each other. Only practice on mannequins, as pushing on real chests can lead to serious injuries.

Water Safety

swimming instructor with kids

Christopher Futcher / Getty Images

Keep the life jackets on and make sure the kids don’t swim alone. Teach kids to watch out for rip currents; if stuck in one, they should swim parallel to the shore to get out. Have a pool? If so, there needs to be a fence around it or a safety cover on it.

Avoid Dog Bites

Young girls with dog

Hill Street Studios / Blend Images / Getty Images

Fido might know not to bite Junior, but does he know not to bite Sally the neighbor kid? Does Sally’s dog know not to bite your kid? Worse yet, does Junior or Sally know what to do when the dog is a stray wandering through the park? Dogs bite kids – a lot. Dogs bite kids in the summertime even more, probably because the kids are out of school and the dogs are hot and cranky. Teach Junior what to do when dogs approach.

Avoid Poisoning

Child in danger near chemicals in kitchen

MartinPrescott / E+ / Getty Images

Keep the kids out of the cabinets and keep the household cleaners in. Cabinets with poisonous substances should be up high and latched or locked. When Junior learns to clean the bathroom, stress how important it is not to mix bleach and ammonia. Post the number for Poison Control next to the phone.

It’s easy to take random pieces of knowledge for granted, especially if you feel they won’t ever apply to you. But never say never—honestly, in this life, anything goes, and we can never tell with absolute certainty whether a particular occurrence will happen to us or not. That’s why it’s important to soak in all of the advice you receive. It never hurts to be prepared for any case scenario. People across the world took the internet to share a random piece of knowledge that they believe might save your life one day. Most of these nuggets of wisdom were based on real-life experiences, so there is definitely merit to them. Read on and educate yourself—you never know if you’ll end up having to deal with one or more these situations in the future:

Don’t forget to check the comment section below the article for more interesting stories!

#1 Fishy Smell

A few months ago I had a fishy smell in my living room. It took me a week to find it. Turned out, one of my outlets on the wall had burned. Thank goodness it wasn’t worse or the whole house could’ve gone up. Usually, an off-smell indicates that there’s a problem.

#2 Leave A Trail

Polar bears have insane ADHD. If one is chasing you, intermittently drop clothing items like a hat or gloves. It will stop to sniff them. Normal prey animals don’t shed whole pieces of themselves: the bear will be perplexed. Also, in the Arctic, if you sweat, you will not make it. The sweat will freeze in your clothing, which will induce hypothermia much faster. And since you can’t get them dry, you’re basically screwed.

#3 Location Is Key

If you call 911, always say WHERE the problem is first, followed by the problem. If you happen to get cut off before you can say what the problem is, at least the dispatcher has a location to send an officer to check it out and advise if more police or fire is needed.  Location, location, location.

#4 Always Call An Ambulance

Maybe not your life, but someone else’s. If you’re having a party, regardless of nature, and someone needs to go to the hospital, CALL AN AMBULANCE. There are laws to protect you, but getting a citation is a lot less trouble than having someone lose their life in your home. The same goes if you’re attending the party. Don’t worry about the homeowners and tenants, worry about the person whose life is at risk.

#5 As Long As You’re Safe

My friend was carjacked. The guy told her to start driving, so she did… right into a cement pillar. The airbag hit the guy and he broke his arm. She ran into the store while he was disoriented. She kept hitting the lock button on her key fob to keep him in the car until the cops showed up.  Insurance elected to raise on her because of the “accident,” though, so that may not be the best way to handle it. But honestly, as long as she got out safe, what else matters?

#6 Firefighter Training

If there is a fire, crawl out of the building. Do not stand up to run—one or two intakes of the plume are enough to do major damage and require hospitalization. It may be warm where you are crawling, but standing up can cook your skin (and your lungs). The plumes at “eye-level” can be more than 600°C. If you can’t see and don’t know the room layout, crawl with your feet or legs in front of you. Do not crawl face first, or you may take a dive down a staircase in the confusion.

#7 The Importance of Pull-Ups

If you can’t do a pull-up, you probably won’t have the strength to pull yourself up off a ledge. That has stuck with me ever since. In theory, it’s very true… but I would guess most people could if some serious adrenaline is involved. Yesterday, someone posted a LiveLeak video of people who were doing parkour on high rise buildings. Some of them ended up falling. I don’t know why I watched it, but it was interesting—some of those people would do like, three pull-ups before losing their grip. So, it seems like if you can’t do a pull up where you pull yourself up to your waist, you may still be screwed.

#8 Tigers And Wolves

The instinct of wolves will only cause them to attack or hunt you if they can intimidate you into fleeing from them. Standing your ground against a wolfpack will be terrifying, but will eventually cause them to bugger off. Tigers as well. Don’t turn your eyes away from a tiger. There is a story of a boy who had to walk backward for three hours back to his village while being stalked by a tiger. The cost-benefit of a prey animal even slightly hurting a tiger is not worth it. It could mean an end sentence in the wild.

#9 Check For Depth

That water you’re about to dive into might not be as deep as you think. Always step in and swim down to check for depth, then jump. My dad told me a story about a group of guys he knew from school. After graduation, they all went up to someone’s lake house and one guy decided to dive off the dock as soon as they got there. The water was shallow that year and when he dove in, he broke his neck and lost his life on impact.

#10 In The Event Of A Tsunami

If the tide suddenly goes out unexpectedly, run as if you stole it, for higher ground.  I read about a ten-year-old English girl who had just learned this before going on vacation with her family to Thailand. The big tsunami that ended a few hundred thousand came. She saw the water retreat and the other tourists walked out on the exposed seafloor. She freaked out and convinced everybody to run for higher ground. A lot of people were saved by a little girl who had paid attention in school.

#11 Rabies Are No Joke

If you are ever bitten by a bat, raccoon, fox, or skunk go directly to the hospital. There is no cure for rabies once it is fully onset. Out of all history, only five people survived rabies from the full onset, and Meredith Palmer was one of the five.

#12 Moose Chase

If you’re ever charged by a moose, get behind a tree. They have about a ten-inch blind spot and they’ll lose you. That’s what ski patrol would always say when there was an increase in moose sightings on the mountain. They’d tell you to stay out of the trees when skiing… unless a moose is running at you. In such a case, you’d want to find trees because, unless you’ve got a steep hill or are already up to speed, the moose is probably faster than you think.

#13 Chewing Aspirin

When people say to take an aspirin to help during a heart attack, chew the pill, don’t swallow it whole. It gets absorbed much quicker. Also, if at all possible, cough hard in the same rhythm as your heart would normally be beating. The constriction in the chest can help prolong passing out long enough to get help.

#14 Keep Eye Contact

If a person asks you for something in the street—a light, the time, whatever—always keep the person in your sight. So, if they ask for the time, don’t just look down at your watch. Raise your arm slightly so your watch is in your sight. I was told this years ago at a self-defense workshop. I wondered if it was ever going to be useful or just something to pad out the teacher’s session.

Then, a decade later, I was on the street late at night on my way home, and someone approached me to ask for the time. I did this, told him the time, and he just kind of stood there. Then, he started asking some weird, clearly improvised question about how he was looking for his friend’s house, and he was sure it was on that street, and he had a “yellow vehicle” similar to the one behind me. I didn’t look back but just said, “Yeah, yellow, uh-huh” as he pointed directly behind me.

I said, “Yeah, the yellow car, I saw it as I walked by, so?” He paused for a second, looking like that meme of the woman with the equations around her head, then just yelled “Oh, SCREW YOU.” and stormed off. It was only afterward I realized that I think he wanted me to look away so he could slug me, but he wasn’t prepared to attack someone that was looking right at him.

#15 Buried Alive

If you’ve been buried alive in a standard coffin, stay calm. If you are still alive, you haven’t been buried that long. Also, the dirt above you hasn’t set yet. Most coffins are not built to last once buried and as a result have weak siding. So here is what you do: Pull your shirt over your head. You don’t want to be swallowing the dirt. Position yourself so you are as sideways in the coffin as possible with your hands and feet pushing on the long sides. PUSH. You should be able to blow out one of the walls. Then, start crawling up. Do not panic. You may not find a grip immediately. Keep going until you make it out.

#16 De-Victimize Yourself

Always leave your itinerary with someone. If you meet strangers—that is, potential bad people—on the road, always let them know that you are in touch with friends and family and that they know exactly where you are. You become less attractive as a victim. Also, let them know that you have a destination and are expected at a particular time, too.

#17 Tornado Tip

If you’re unsure about the movement of a tornado, put a straight object such as a tree or a street light in between you and the tornado. It’ll make it way easier to see which way the tornado is moving. If the tornado appears to not be moving, it’s coming right at you.  Usually, the only reference you will have is the width. If it doesn’t appear to be moving but is getting wider, it’s coming towards you; at which point you’ll want to move perpendicular to its movement.

#18 Neutral Brakes

If your car suddenly accelerates beyond control and the brakes are unresponsive, shift the car in to neutral and slowly apply the brakes. This situation happened to a family in California some years ago. They had no idea what to do and tragically lost their lives.

#19 Forget Being Polite

EMT here! If you’re ever choking on food in a public venue, DO NOT go to the restroom to avoid causing a scene. Almost every tragedy I’ve seen from people choking involves finding the victims unconscious in a bathroom stall because they were too polite to seek help. I feel like if there’s any situation in which it’s okay to not be polite, it’s when you’re choking.

#20 Get Screened

One out of 20 people will get bowel cancer in their lifetime. You need some sort of screening starting at age 45 to 50, depending on your family history. Any blood in the stool needs to be checked out. Early cancers can be completely cured with keyhole surgery. You don’t have to fall victim to bowel cancer. In Australia, when you turn 50, the government starts sending you free testing kits every two years.

#21 The Sun’s Glare

For pedestrians crossing the street: if you can see the sun’s reflection on the windshield of a car, there’s a good chance the driver can not see you. If your shadow points toward the car, the same applies. Basically, always assume the driver can’t see you. You might not feel like it’s “right” and that you have the right of way, but on the other hand, you’ll be alive to complain about it.

#22 Just Wreck-It

If you’ve been carjacked and the carjacker tells you to just drive, take whatever chance you get to wreck. At a minimum, you’re getting emergency services involved (meaning it’s more likely they’ll be caught), and there’s a chance you’ll incapacitate or even end the carjacker. Just tighten your seatbelt beforehand to increase your chances of survival. Of course, there’s also a chance that you might not survive, but, if they’re taking you to a second location, odds are you probably weren’t going to come back anyway.

#23 Self-Heimlich

If you’re choking with nobody around to give you the Heimlich, you can give yourself the Heimlich by using the back of a chair (or similar objects like the sidearm of a couch, or whatever). Forcefully throw your stomach over the back of the chair a few times, try to mimic the motion of the Heimlich: push in above the belly button, then up… kind of like a “J” motion.

#24 Just Float On

If you fall into cold open water, resist the urge to swim and try to float until the onset of panic subsides. Once you have your breathing under control, you can then start to swim to safety. By doing this, you will not hyperventilate and avoid potentially drowning. Also, to float: slowly lift your legs up, keep your arms out at the water’s surface and lean your head back. Yes, you will get water in your ears, just let it be.

#25 Dealing With A Missing Person

Contrary to common myth, you can file a missing person report before 24 hours have passed. Putting it off a day because they went missing that night could very easily be the difference between them being found or not.

#26 First Aid And CPR

Everyone should have basic first aid and CPR training, if possible. My dad collapsed on Saturday morning when he got up to go to the toilet and neither I or my mom knew basic first aid or CPR. The ambulance took eight minutes to arrive and we only live four streets away from the depot. Luckily, he came too, but there was a point where he stopped breathing. If he continued to not breathe for eight minutes, it would have been too late. Please learn and hope you don’t need it, instead of needing it and not knowing.

#27 Car Going Under

If your car is going underwater, an electronic “roll-down” button will work regardless of the water pressure outside the car. However, a manual handle is much more difficult (you also won’t be able to open the door). It’s better to have something in the glove box (like an ice scraper) to break the window glass with.

#28 Exit Strategy

When you go into a building, look for an exit that is not the one you used to come in. In an emergency, most people will head out their original exit, but you will head out of the exit less traveled… and it may make all the difference. This happened at the Great White Show. People got wedged in the exit they entered through. Meanwhile, other people just easily walked out using the other exits.

#29 Just Let It Go

Let it go. Don’t let road rage influence your behavior. It’s not worth it. Take a deep breath, count to 10. Take your foot off the pedal. Disengage. It’s not worth it.  This sounds like a joke, but the most soul-crushing moment I had while driving was when someone shook their head at me in disappointment because I was blocking a small road due to my own impatience.

#30 The Sleep Trick

A friend who grew up in a “rough” neighborhood taught me this one: if you’re on a bus and robbers get on, you have a chance of not having your stuff taken or being bothered at all if you pretend to be asleep. The robbers have to keep their eyes on a lot of people at once to prevent anyone from calling the police, or prevent the driver from signaling distress somehow, and prevent all passengers from reacting in dangerous ways. If you’re asleep, that’s one person less for a robber to manage, so they may not bother to wake you up.

#31 Be More Specific

If you are in danger or in need of help in a public place, it’s almost always a bad idea to just yell “help.” It’s more important to be specific. Pointing at someone and telling them to call 911 will be more effective. The Bystander Effect can be terrible sometimes. On a related note for adults: if someone tries to get into a vehicle you’re driving, like at a stoplight or a parking lot, punch the gas. Do not drive to wherever this person is telling you to go. Hit whatever is in front or behind you (unless it’s a person, don’t hit a person). A car, a wall, what have you. Accidents draw people and thereby more witnesses.

#32 On Blood Thinners

If you’re taking blood thinners, you should know they increase the risks of bleeding. You should watch out for signs of bleeding like pallor, breathlessness, multiple rashes, bleeding gums, etc. If you accidentally cut yourself, take great care of the cut—you could bleed out if you don’t. At the pharmacy today, a regular patient passed away because she got a cut on her leg while gardening, but didn’t think much about it. Since she was on blood thinners, she bled out during the night.

#33 Seatbelts And Helmets

Wear a helmet, wear a seatbelt. It may not be cool, but you’re more fragile than you lead yourself to believe. I’ve lost three friends because they didn’t wear the appropriate gear or follow simple safety practices. Don’t be a statistic, please. There’s someone out there who would miss you and think, “I just wish they had put a helmet or seatbelt on.

#34 Avoid Electrical Objects

When touching some thing electrical, use the back of your hand. Using your palm on, say, a live wire will cause your hand to grab it and you be unable to let go. Then again, as an electrician, just don’t grab electrical things at all. Let me do it, instead. We have meters and detectors that can sense electricity before anyone ever has to touch it. The price of a service call isn’t worth your life. Electricity will end you and will hurt the whole time that you are being electrocuted.

#35 Downhill To Safety

Bears can climb trees but have trouble running downhill as they gain too much speed. If you’re being chased by a bear, head for a hill rather than up a tree. Or, better yet, know the signs of a bear and have bear spray if you, you know, like wandering around where there are bears. Watch out for black bears, specifically.  They can come in basically every color and shade that human hair can naturally appear. Brown, reddish-brown, black, even blond (though straight-up black is the most common by far). If it’s black, don’t climb. You’d be better off trying to intimidate it.

#36 Practicing Blindfolded

Blindfold yourself and try to find the way out of your own house. You will be surprised how hard it is to find the stairs etc. Practicing this once every three months will allow you to find your way out in case your house is filled with plumes from a fire (which can happen within a minute).

#37 Lock Your Doors

Lock all your doors when you’re in the house. No neighborhood is 100 percent safe. No kidding. I work a night shift and was up at 3 a.m. watching TV. All the lights in the living room were on. This was like, a beacon for people looking to rob houses as they thought the owners left the lights on to go on vacation. I had some guy knock on my front door to see if anyone was home before he busted in. I then heard the handle jiggle.

Needless to say, he was quite surprised when I responded along with three great Danes. It was more than he bargained for and he tried to play it off like he needed a ride into town. I live in a rural area and there isn’t a neighbor within a quarter-mile of me, let alone any sort of business. My wife called the cops but he disappeared before they got there.

#38 Sepsis Scares

When you cut yourself as a kid, your parents always washed and cleaned the wound, then put antiseptic on it before putting a plaster (band-aid) on it. They did it for a very good reason. You should always treat every cut—no matter how superficial—with the same degree of care. No one should never mess around with sepsis. It’s a horrible thing to experience, and an even worse thing to go out on.

#39 Determining Priorities

I’d say the survival rule of three: humans can survive three weeks without food, three days without water, three hours without shelter, and three minutes without oxygen. It helps you get your priorities straight, should it come to it.

#40 Never Relocate

If someone threatens you with violence and orders you to move you to another location, your chance of getting hurt goes up considerably if you agree to relocate. My father was an assistant DA who worked with homicide. He gave me this advice over and over. Years later, someone climbed in my car and threatened me. He told me to drive. And… I said no. I took the keys out and threw them. It wasn’t a conscious decision. My dad had just hammered his advice in so hard that it switched on. The guy got out without saying a word and ran.

#41 Stunt Man Advice

If you have to get out of a moving car, put one foot down and take a step. Don’t just jump out. This will reduce your speed immensely. Sure, you will fall over, but at a much-reduced speed. A stunt man told me this. I had to leave a moving car that was going about 40mph… I was pregnant. I had a medium-sized purse and a pillow. The man driving the car had said he was going to end us both if he couldn’t have me and was going in and out of oncoming traffic. I grabbed my bag and pillow and held the pillow across my stomach while I opened the door. I then stepped out and let myself roll. It was amazing! I ended up with just a handful of bruises and scrapes and I was fine. My daughter is 14 now. We made it.

#42 Predator Kill Zone

If you notice a lack of small creatures or woodlands animals nearby, most fear human interaction but you’ll know they’re there. But if it is noticeably empty, then you’re likely in a predator kill zone. Similarly, if you see a lot of vultures circling, it can mean a lifeless animal or a predator animal cache. So be aware of this when you’re in the outdoors.

#43 Attracted To The Sting

Beekeeper here. For honey bees, it’s a sting that attracts them. If you get stung, they release a pheromone that tells the other bees to sting the same place. Cover the spot with your hand or rub it with something that has a strong smell. Just not something that smells like banana. The chemical that makes the banana smell is the same as bees’ alarm pheromone. If you smell bananas when you’re working your bees, you’ve upset them.

#44 Household Chemistry

Never use bleach and ammonia-based cleaning products at the same time or in the same room. A combination of both their vapors creates chloramine vapor, which can end you if you inhale it. Check your cleaning supplies to see what’s in the, especially toilet and tile cleaners.

#45 Dodging Rhinos

If a rhino is running towards you, wait until the last second, then step out of the way. Rhinos cannot make sudden turns and will give you a couple of seconds of a head start to run in the other direction. Repeat as necessary!

The Beginning and End of the Journey Is In The Now / 50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier Life / School Calendar 2020-21

Nature, Landscape, Peace, Grassland, Cloud, Rocks, Blue

Every Day
I am astonished
by all
the Beauty
this Sacred World
reveals to me.
It inspires
and transforms me.
We can enjoy
our Travels

down the uncertain and unpredictable
that lead to such Beauty
as God
Nature, Landscape, Peace, Grassland

In every moment you
are the moments
that are real.

This World is so huge
and so very Beautiful.
And as the rays
of our Sun
touch you,
they are reflected
in you,
like the Love
of God.

“Has it ever struck you
that Life is all memory,
except for the one present
that goes by you so quick
you hardly catch it going?”
Tennessee Williams

We are
Truly Blessed.
As our Dreams are manifesting
the Day
in the dark,
your Love
will keep shining
a Light
in this World.
like the rays of the Sun,
touches you,
and everyone.
Your Love
is a reflection
of you.

your Love
leaves a Light
in the dark.

Look into the eyes
of one you Love,
and you will see
what it means
to search
for your Heart,
search your Soul.
And when you find Love there,
will search
no more.

Sunrise, Country Life, Agriculture

Our Lord
covers you
with a Light veil.

As the leaves of green
gently sway
in tune with your thoughts,
a delicate Flower of feeling
unfolds to meet the Light.
And the wind flows Joyful
and fills you with tranquility
and delight.

Your smile reveals the here and now,
and the whole meaning of Life.
The source of your inspiration
is the Infinite
and the Beautiful World
of Love
within you.

The Beginning and the End
of our Journey
is in the

we can see the Truth
of God’s Love,
we are mesmerized by it.

 And finally,
we experience the Freedom
and the Joy and the Peace
of our True self,
of the Essence
of this Life
and of Living.
Sky, Scenic, Hua Hin, Tropical, Drone

we move out
of our mind,
out of our trivial thoughts,
which pervade and prevail,

and into the Now,
into this Beautiful moment of our experience,
we can at last open a door
into the real World
of who we really are.

“Has it ever struck you
that Life is all
except for the one present moment
that goes by you so quick
you hardly catch it going?”
Tennessee Williams

we may come to believe
that we are all alone.

Most of us truly are
in some form or fashion.
My Dear Friends,
if you still have
your memories,

you are never truly alone.
You are just separated
by Time & space.
And Time

may be an illusion
and not even
When you dwell
deeply embedded
in a Loving and Precious
you never left the
your Heart was in.
The voices you still hear

are glimmers of Light
in the dark
of a day,
of night

Nature, Landscape, Kaçkars, Peace

There are
Loving moments
that seem to last
They swim
in our glittering eyes.
These precious moments,
and Time itself,
seem to stop
and scoff at Eternity.

So don’t be sad
when a precious moment
has passed you by,
be Happy
it was born,
to Bless you,
and remember,
and never let it

One word we never learn,
when we find True Love

is Good-bye.

True Love
is frozen in Time.

Your Heart can
be made
to never, ever hurt again.
And how is this done?
By Loving another
far, far more
than you ever Loved
Healing within,
always comes
from without,
from another
in need.

Nature, Landscape, Kaçkars

You can Live
the way that God
wants you to Live,
If you only let it be,
let it be,
let it be.

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier Life

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Nick Ferrari

If your favorite vegetable isn’t in season, grab a frozen bag of it for the same nutritional value.

The editors at AARP have filtered through numerous medical journals and studies to identify the best actions you can take to achieve a longer, fuller life. We know there are no guarantees. But genetics account for just 25 percent of a person’s longevity. The rest is up to you. With this collection of some of the most important longevity findings, you’ll have the road map you need to get to 80, 90, 100 or beyond.

1. Frozen is fine

You can eat a balanced diet even when fresh fruits and vegetables are out of season because frozen can be as good as or even better for life-extending nutrients. British scientists found that fresh fruit can lose nutrients after three days of refrigeration, while frozen fruits don’t suffer the same fate. Another study similarly found that frozen blueberries contained more vitamin C than fresh ones.

2. Cut back on pain pills

Regular use of painkillers such as ibuprofen and naproxen — including over-the-counter brands such as Advil, Motrin and Aleve — may raise your risk of heart attack and stroke by 10 percent, according to a 2014 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel review. (Prescription-strength versions may increase your risk by 20 to 50 percent, even after just a few weeks of use.) Reserve these drugs for severe pain, and use the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time.

3. Please go to bed

Consistently sleeping less than six hours a night nearly doubles your risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a review of 15 studies published in the European Heart Journal. Another study found that consistently sleep-deprived people were 12 percent more likely to die over the 25-year study period than those who got six to eight hours of sleep a night. These tips from the National Sleep Foundation can help ensure that you get good quality shut-eye, even if you’re among the half of people over 60 who have insomnia:

  • Make the room pitch-black dark, and set the thermostat between 60 and 67 degrees.
  • Exercise every day. It doesn’t matter what time of day you work out, just so it doesn’t interfere with your rest.
  • Stick to a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and getting up at the same time each day.
  • Shut down your electronics an hour before retiring, as the light from some devices can stimulate the brain.
  • Replace your mattress if it’s more than 10 years old.

4. But don’t always go right to sleep

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Marriage is good for the heart in more ways than one.

5. Get (or stay) hitched

Marriage truly is good for your health — and your longevity. The prestigious Framingham Offspring Study found that married men had a 46 percent lower risk of death than never-married men, in part due to marriage’s well-known impact on heart health. Indeed, a 2014 study by New York University’s Langone Medical Center found that married men and women had a 5 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

6. Ripeness matters

No, you won’t die from eating under-ripe produce, but new research shows that fully ripened fruit has more life-lengthening health benefits. For example, green bananas are low in fiber and high in astringent tannins that can cause constipation. Fully ripened pears and blackberries have more disease-fighting antioxidants. And in watermelon, a deep red color signifies more lycopene, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

7. Don’t sweeten with sugar

A high-sugar diet boosts blood sugar, which in turn plays havoc with your heart by increasing levels of LDL cholesterol while lowering heart-friendly HDL cholesterol, and tripling your risk for fatal cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar a day, and men no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams).

8. Consider extra vitamin D

Vitamin D, a bright byproduct of sunlight, has many health benefits, including a link to longevity. But too much vitamin D increases your risk of dying as much as too little, according to a 2015 Danish study. So you want to get the right amount. Don’t just rely on outdoor time to get extra vitamin D; the rate of skin cancer rises as we age, so it’s important to limit exposure. The smart plan: Ask your doctor if you would benefit from extra D in pill form. University of Copenhagen researchers found that the ideal vitamin D level is more than 50 nanomoles per liter of blood, but less than 100 nmol/L.

9. Go green

If coffee’s not your thing, green tea also has proven longevity cred, likely because it contains powerful antioxidants known as catechins that may help combat diabetes and heart disease. In a large study of more than 40,000 Japanese men and women, drinking five or more cups of green tea a day was associated with a 12 percent decrease in mortality among men and a 23 percent decrease among women.

Taking a break from work and going on a vacation is crucial to your well being.

10. Vacation … or Else

Not taking time off work might, indeed, be deadly. One study of men at high risk for coronary artery disease found that those who failed to take annual vacations were 32 percent more likely to die of a heart attack. And in the long-running Framingham Heart Study, women who vacationed just once every six years were eight times more likely to develop coronary artery disease or have a heart attack than women who vacationed twice a year.

11. Eat whole grains

The average American eats one serving of whole grains daily — and that may be just a single morning slice of toast. But eating three or more servings each day can cut overall death rate by about 20 percent, according to a 2016 study from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Have some oatmeal or brown rice, or get adventurous and go for quinoa, barley, even farro.

12. Spice it up

Eating hot chili peppers may add years to your life. In a 2016 analysis of the dietary habits of more than 16,000 men and women over 23 years, those who reported eating hot peppers reduced their risk of dying by 13 percent. Not a fan of those peppers? Even a little spice can have health benefits. That’s because the body produces endorphins to reduce the heat from the capsaicin in the peppers; those endorphins also reduce pain and inflammation.

13. Drink whole milk

You’ve been told forever to drink low-fat or skim milk, or go for fat-free yogurt. But research published in the journal Circulation in 2016 concluded that those who consumed the most dairy fat had a 50 percent lower risk of developing diabetes, a disease that can shorten your life by eight to 10 years on average.

14. Just add water

Staying adequately hydrated — measured by urine that’s light yellow or straw colored — can also help prolong a healthy life by reducing the risk of bladder and colon cancer and keeping kidneys in tip-top shape. Bonus: It might even help you lose weight. Researchers at the University of Illinois found that those who sipped more H2O ended up eating 68 to 205 fewer calories per day.

A few cups of java a day might keep the doctor away.

15. Say yes to that extra cup

Coffee does more than help you wake up; it also reduces your risk of stroke, diabetes and some cancers. And in a 2015 study published in the journal Circulation, Harvard researchers discovered that “people who drank three to five cups of coffee per day had about a 15 percent lower [risk of premature] mortality compared to people who didn’t drink coffee,” says coauthor Walter Willett, M.D. Mind you, a cup is 8 ounces, so your 16-ounce Starbucks grande is really two cups by that measure.

16. Live like the Amish

A University of Maryland study found that Amish men live longer than typical Caucasian men in the United States, and both Amish men and women have lower rates of hospitalization. What are the Amish ways? Lots of physical activity, less smoking and drinking, and a supportive social structure involving family and community.

17. End the day’s eating by 9 p.m.

Not only is eating late bad for your waistline — sleeping doesn’t exactly burn lots of calories — it also increases the risk of heart disease by 55 percent for men ages 45 to 82, according to a Harvard study.

18. Eat your veggies

In a study of 73,000 adults, most in their mid to upper 50s, vegetarians were 12 percent less likely than carnivores to have died from any cause during the six-year study period. The 2016 study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that mortality rates were lowest overall for pesco-vegetarians (those who eat fish occasionally), followed by vegans (those who eat no animal products), and lacto-ovo vegetarians (those who eat dairy and eggs).

19. Eat like the Greeks

The Mediterranean diet (remember Byblos Restaurant!), with its reliance on fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish and nuts, is one of the healthiest diets for both overall health and longevity. Harvard researchers, reporting in the BMJ, found that those who followed the diet most closely had longer telomeres, which cap the end of each strand of DNA and protect chromosomes from damage. Even those who only sporadically followed the diet reaped longevity benefits, researchers found.

Cutting your portions helps you cut calories, which aids in weight loss and more.

20. Eat less

If you want to reach 100, put down the fork, says Dan Buettner, who studies longevity hot spots around the world, such as Okinawa, Japan. Buettner found that the oldest Okinawans stop eating when they feel 80 percent full. A National Institutes of Health-funded study similarly found that cutting back calories reduced blood pressure, cholesterol and insulin resistance.

21. Drink less or NONE of alcohol (here’s a trick)

More-than-moderate alcohol consumption (generally, more than one drink a day for women or more than two a day for men) leads to a shorter life span. Here’s one way to cut your intake: Pour red wine into a white-wine glass, which is narrower. Studies by Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab found that people poured 12 percent more into red-wine glasses. You’ll also pour less wine into your glass if it’s sitting on the table, instead of in your hand, says Brian Wansink, the lab’s director.

22. Save your pennies

Money might not make you happier, but it will help you live longer. A 2016 study by Stanford researchers published in JAMA found that people whose income bracket was in the top 1 percent lived nearly 15 years longer than those in the bottom 1 percent. The disparity could be attributed to healthier behaviors in higher-income groups, including less smoking and lower obesity rates, researchers say.

23. Or move to one of these states

If you’re not wealthy, consider moving to California, New York or Vermont, where studies show that low-income people tend to live the longest. Loma Linda, Calif., has the highest longevity thanks to vegetarian Seventh-day Adventists, who live eight to 10 years longer than the rest of us. Nevada, Indiana and Oklahoma have the lowest life expectancy (less than 78 years).

24. Ponder a Ponderosa

Experiencing a sense of awe — such as when viewing the Grand Canyon or listening to Beethoven’s Ninth — may boost the body’s defense system, says research from the University of California, Berkeley. “That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests that the things we do to experience these emotions — a walk in nature, losing oneself in music, beholding art — has a direct influence upon health and life expectancy,” says Dacher Keltner, a psychologist and coauthor of the study.

Owning a dog can help lower stress and boost physical activity.

25. Get a friend with four legs

A few studies on the link between pet ownership and health have found that owning a pet can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, even improve the odds of surviving a heart attack. Now the American Heart Association has weighed in with a report published in the journal Circulation that recommends owning a dog, in particular, for those seeking to reduce their risk of deadly heart disease. Dog owners are more likely to be physically active and are also less vulnerable to the effects of stress, the report says.

26. Find your purpose

Do you wake up looking forward to something? In a 2014 study published in the Lancet, researchers found that those with the highest sense of purpose were 30 percent less likely to die during the 8.5-year study period. In fact, doing something that matters — whether it’s helping your children or interacting in a community of like-minded folks — is correlated with seven extra years of life, according to researchers who study people in “blue zones,” areas of the world where folks live the longest.

27. Embrace your faith

Attending religious services once a week has been shown to add between four and 14 years to life expectancy, according to researchers who study blue zones. Don’t belong to a church? Ask to join a friend at her services, or just drop in at a nearby house of worship; most have an open-door policy.

28. Be food safe

About 3,000 Americans die from food poisoning annually, say the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Even seemingly healthy foods — like sprouts, cantaloupe, berries and raw tuna — can make you sick or even kill you, says the FDA. Your action plan: Keep your kitchen pristine, wash your hands and utensils before and after handling food, separate raw and cooked foods, refrigerate perishable food promptly, and cook food to a safe temperature to kill deadly bacteria.

29. Consider mountain life

People residing at higher altitudes tend to live longer, a study by the University of Colorado and the Harvard School of Global Health revealed. Of the 20 healthiest counties in America, many are in Colorado and Utah. Researchers think lower oxygen levels might cause your body to adapt in ways that strengthen your heart and circulation.

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Eating a handful of nuts five times per week can lower your mortality risk from certain diseases.

30. Go nuts

In a European study of adults ages 55 to 69, those who ate 10 grams of nuts daily — 8 almonds or 6 cashews — reduced their risk of death from any health-related cause by 23 percent. As for specific ailments, consuming a handful of nuts at least five times per week lowers the mortality risk for heart disease (by 29 percent), respiratory disease (24 percent) and cancer (11 percent), according to a previous U.S. study. Sorry, peanut butter fans: Spreads didn’t show the same benefits.

31. Keep watching LOL cat videos

Laughter really is the best medicine, helping to reduce stress, boost the immune system, reduce pain and improve blood flow to the brain. In fact, laughter has the same effect on blood vessels as exercise, report researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

32. Get social

Studies show that loneliness increases the risk of early death by 45 percent. It weakens the immune system and raises blood pressure while increasing the risk for heart attacks and stroke. By contrast, people with strong ties to friends and family have as much as a 50 percent lower risk of dying, according to a study in PLOS Medicine. So visit a friend. And don’t discount your online friends. A 2016 study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego found that those who use online interactions don’t completely supplant face-to-face social interaction.

33. Watch your grandkids

While babysitting every day is stressful, regularly watching the grands can lower your risk of dying by a third, according to a 2016 study published in Evolution and Human Behavior. That adds up to an extra five years of life, researchers say. They speculate that caregiving gives grandparents a sense of purpose, and keeps them mentally and physically active.

34. Try to stay out of the hospital

A 2016 Johns Hopkins University study found that some 250,000 patients die each year in hospitals from medical mistakes, such as misdiagnoses, poor practices and conditions, and drug errors. Sometimes the best way to avoid a grave condition is not to enter the system at all.

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Reading gives muscle to your memory.

35. Read more

Sounds like we made it up, but scientific research supports the longevity benefits of reading — newspapers and magazines will do, but books are the best. “As little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read,” said the study’s senior author, Becca R. Levy, a professor of epidemiology at Yale.

36. Read the ‘AARP Bulletin’

Really. This and other smart publications can keep you up to date on health info. Studies have shown that when people are empowered with information to make important medical decisions, it not only enhances their well-being but also improves a treatment’s effectiveness. So keep reading aarp.org/bulletin and aarp.org/health.

37. Monitor yourself

Don’t wait for annual checkups to consider your health. By then, a small problem could have morphed into a life-threatening illness. In one English study, researchers found that less than 60 percent of people who developed unusual symptoms in the previous three months had seen a doctor. Symptoms that might point to cancer include: unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more (this can be an indication of cancers of the esophagus, stomach or lungs); fever; extreme fatigue; changes in bowel or bladder habits; or unusual bleeding. Other unusual symptoms that could signal disease? A patch of rough, dark skin could indicate diabetes, and a strange color on your tongue could signal serious acid-reflux issues.

38. Visit the hardware store

Among the most common causes of “unintentional deaths” are carbon monoxide, radon and lead poisoning, the CDC reports. Make sure there’s a carbon monoxide detector near every bedroom, and be sure to test and replace the batteries every two years. Was your home built before 1978, when lead paint was outlawed? One trip to the store can get you all you need to test for these toxic substances.

39. Practice home fire drills

Just 1 in 3 families have a fire-safety plan, says Robert Cole, president of Community Health Strategies, an injury-prevention education organization based in Pittsford, N.Y. “People underestimate the speed of a fire. Many waste time figuring out what to do, or trying to take belongings with them. Everyone should know what to do and how to get out safely.”

50 Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

Studies show that female doctors are more effective communicators than male physicians.

40. Find a woman doctor

When Harvard researchers in 2016 analyzed Medicare records documenting more than 1.5 million hospitalizations over four years, they found that patients who received care from a female physician were more likely to survive and less likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. In fact, about 32,000 fewer people would die each year “if male physicians achieved the same outcomes as female physicians,” the researchers said. Previous studies have suggested that female doctors are more likely to follow clinical guidelines and are more effective communicators.

41. Make peace with family

While we often stress about small stuff — the guests are here, and we’re not ready! — it’s the nagging, long-running forms of stress, such as a family dispute, that put your longevity at risk. Chronic stress hastens the cellular deterioration that leads to premature aging and a vast array of serious diseases, according to long-running research from the University of California, San Francisco. This sort of cell death “turns out to be one of the strongest predictors of early diseases of aging and in many studies of early mortality,” says lead researcher Elissa Epel. The remedy: Come to peace with the people in your life. Forgive your family, forgive yourself, put the past behind you — so you can have more life in front of you.

42. Take the stairs — every day

A study by University of Geneva researchers found that taking the stairs instead of the elevators reduced the risk of dying prematurely by 15 percent. What’s more, a daily stair climb shaves six months off your “brain age,” according to researchers at Concordia University who performed MRI scans on 331 people ages 19 to 79. Gray matter shrinks naturally with age, but less so when people stay active.

43. Toss that rug

One of the top risks for falls at home is throw rugs. Those slip-slidey accoutrements send 38,000 older adults to the emergency room each year, according to a 2013 study by the CDC. Banish these rugs from your home, and make sure bath mats have a nonslip bottom.

44. Beware the high-tech dash

Nearly one in five traffic accidents and more than 400,000 crash-related injuries involve a distracted driver, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports. Top distractions, according to a recent Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study, are cellphones. But a less-obvious risk is using the touch screen on your car’s dashboard.

50 ways to live a longer, healthier, happier life

Yes, you can go carless and survive.

45. And drive less

In 2014, more than 5,700 older adults were killed and more than 236,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. Per mile traveled, fatal crashes increase noticeably starting at age 70 and are highest among drivers age 85 and older, a highway safety organization says. If you’re feeling unsafe behind the wheel, it might be time to look for alternative transportation.

46. Better yet, walk

What’s the best prescription for a longer life? Exercise. And doctors are literally prescribing it instead of medication. “There is no pill that comes close to what exercise can do,” says Claude Bouchard, director of the human genomics laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana. It benefits your brain, heart, skin, mood and metabolism. Even as little as 10 minutes of brisk walking can help (that’s all it takes to burn off the calories of one chocolate chip cookie). Once you can do 10 minutes, push it to 15. Then 20. Start slow, but just start.

47. Just not in the street

Nearly 5,000 pedestrians are killed annually in the U.S., according to the latest federal figures, and nearly 20 percent of those deaths were among adults age 65 and older. If you walk for your health — and we hope you do — stay safe and consider doing so at the mall, a community health center or a park.

48. And go a little faster

The benefits of a brisk walk are real: A University of Pittsburgh study of adults 65 and older found that those whose usual walking pace exceeded one meter per second lived longer. While researchers say they can’t recommend brisk walking as a panacea for living longer, they did see increased survival in those who picked up the pace over the course of a year.

49. Get fidgety

Never mind what your grade school teachers said; fidgeting is good. A 2016 British study finds that sitting for seven or more hours a day increases your risk of dying by 30 percent — except among active fidgeters, who see no increased risk.

Should you trade in your car?

Need wheels? Go for a smart car.

50. Trade in Ol’ Bessie

High-tech safety features have now become standard in new cars. The government mandates that all have airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control — “up there with seat belts and airbags in its life- aving benefits,” says one industry leader — and tire pressure-monitoring systems. Carmakers also offer back-up cameras, self-parking features, blind-spot and lane-departure warnings, and forward-collision warning with auto-braking.

How Dental Problems Can Lead to Stroke

Did you know that your dental health has consequences that go well beyond your mouth? Taking care of your teeth has been found to protect your overall health, and the most surprising relationship between dental health and overall health is that problems with your dental health have been associated with stroke.

What Kind of Dental Problems Lead to Stroke?

Research studies from countries as diverse as Germany, France, Sweden, India, and Korea show that varying degrees of periodontal disease (gum disease) are associated with strokes. Mild gum disease, which causes inflammation of the gums, is called gingivitis, while more serious gum disease that causes the actual destruction of the gums is called periodontitis. Severe periodontitis can lead to tooth decay and eventually even tooth loss. All three of these types of gum disease are associated with a stroke  even the mildest form, which is gingivitis.1

A recent research study from Sweden followed randomly selected people over a period of 26 years. Researchers reported, “that gingival inflammation was clearly associated with stroke.”2

And yet another research study found that having severe periodontal disease and tooth loss was a strong predictor of stroke, and even that people who had lost more teeth had usually experienced more strokes. Tooth loss was found to be a predictor of silent strokes.3 Silent strokes are strokes that people don’t know they had because silent strokes don’t cause obvious handicaps. However, over time, the build-up of silent strokes can cause disabling problems such as dementia.

What Kind of Strokes Can Dental Problems Cause?

Many research studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and lack of dental care with ischemic strokes.4 Ischemic strokes are strokes caused by interruption of blood flow due to a blood clot.

Dental Problems Associated With Stroke

Dental problems such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth loss are all associated with inflammation, and sometimes with an infection. Infections have been shown to increase the risk of stroke, possibly due to the body’s inflammatory immune response to infections.5

Sometimes inflammation and infection can make the blood more likely to clot, causing a stroke. If serious dental problems persist untreated for a long time, the inflammation and infection that result from unhealthy teeth and gums can make an ischemic stroke more likely.

How to Protect Your Teeth

It is advantageous to have good dental health. For many people, dental care can seem time-consuming and costly. Prevention of gum disease and tooth loss is best achieved through consistently brushing teeth, flossing, avoiding cigarettes and regular visits to the dentist. Once gum disease has started, it is treatable and manageable. Often, deep cleaning in the dentist’s office is recommended.

Cost of Dental Care

One of the biggest reasons that people do not take care of their teeth is concern about the cost. It may be beneficial to ask for recommendations and ask the dentist’s office about the cost of a dental visit ahead of time. And it is useful to keep in mind that some health insurance plans cover the complete or partial cost of dental care. Overall, the cost of dental care is much lower than the cost of a stroke, which is an expensive lifelong condition to live with.

Beating Cancer With Nutrition

“I’m sorry, but you have cancer.” These words from a doctor introduce fear into the heart of any patient.

The good news is that supportive nutrition therapy can significantly increase cancer patients’ quality and length of life and improve their chances for a complete remission. Better yet, a healthy lifestyle that includes a wholesome diet, sufficient exercise, positive attitude and toxin avoidance can prevent up to 90 percent of cancers.

Now for the bad news. Conventional medicine does not have a high success rate with the disease. By the turn of this century, cancer will become the leading cause of death in America. During the past 26 years, NCI spent $37 billion in research with a resulting increase in cancer incidence and deaths. Clearly, medicine cannot produce a “magic bullet” to cure cancer while patients go on living on soft drinks, pollutants and stress.

On December 23, 1971, President Richard M. Nixon confidently declared a “war on cancer” and promised a cure by the 1976 Bicentennial. However, as late as 1991, a group of 60 noted physicians and scientists called a press conference and made the following statement: “The cancer establishment confuses the public with repeated claims that we are winning the war on cancer. … Our ability to treat and cure most cancers has not materially improved.” [1] In this article, I will briefly explore the reasons for failure in combating cancer and give rational directions to improve outcomes for the 2.5 million cancer patients being treated in America today.

Developing A Strategy

In early research, the techniques of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy looked like the best approaches to cancer. The goal was to cut away, burn and poison the abnormal cells. While such therapies can temporarily reduce tumor burden, they do not cure cancer. Only by changing the underlying cause of the disease can a cancer patient expect to return to health.

Doctors now know that eliminating cancer begins with changing the conditions that support tumor growth, not just applying cytotoxic therapies to kill cancer cells. Here’s an analogy: Fungus grows on the bark of a tree due to the favorable conditions of heat, moisture and darkness. You can cut, burn and poison a fungus all you want, but as long as favorable conditions persist, it will flourish. Similarly, cancer develops in a human when conditions are right. Documented factors that favor tumor formation include toxic burden, immune suppression, malnutrition, mental depression and elevated blood glucose. More speculative causative factors include reduced pH, dysbiosis (abnormal bacteria in the gut), hypothyroidism, insufficient gland and organ output (i.e., insufficient DHEA, enzymes and hydrochloric acid) and parasites. Unless we correct these cancer inducers, cytotoxic therapies are doomed to failure.

The best way to correct the problem is through therapeutic use of nutrients. But, as a word of caution, while nutrition should be an integral component of every cancer patient’s treatment program, nutrition therapy alone is probably insufficient for most advanced cancers. The reasons for using therapeutic nutrition in cancer treatment are numerous and include the following:

Malnutrition:   Undernourishing your body can have devastating, even fatal consequences. In fact, more than 40 percent of cancer patients die from malnutrition, not the cancer itself. [2] Cancer induces a metabolic abnormality akin to getting your car stuck on ice–the wheels spin and the engine guzzles gas, but you don’t go anywhere. Yet, cancer patients often eat less food than they did before their illness began. One reason is that tumors induce a hypermetabolic state and secrete a substance called cachectin that suppresses appetite. Chemo and radiation therapy can also cause anorexia and alone are sufficient biological stressors to induce malnutrition. [3] Because cancer patients need more calories than healthy people, they eventually waste away, a condition called cachexia. Weight loss increases the mortality rate for most types of cancer, while also lowering the positive response to chemotherapy. [4]

In addition to proper eating, nutrient-dense “shakes,” canned nutritional formulas, protein powders, hydrazine sulfate, enzymes, DNA loading and other therapies can reverse the weight loss that consumes far too many cancer patients. If cancer patients lose 10 percent or more of their body weight after cancer diagnosis, all other nutrition strategies are irrelevant until this problem is addressed. A word of caution: Do not fill up a fragile stomach with vitamin pills when nutrient-dense foods are more important.

Optimum nutrition:   Eating dense concentrates of nutrients can enhance the effectiveness of medical therapy. Some people worry that antioxidants such as vitamins C, E and beta-carotene might neutralize the tumor-killing ability of chemo and radiation, which are pro-oxidant therapies. This doesn’t happen. In both human and animal studies, antioxidants enhance the tumor kill of chemotherapy and radiation while protecting the host tissue from harm. [5]

In fact, antioxidants greatly benefit chemo and radiation therapies. While both treatments can reduce tumor burden, they can also harm normal tissues such as the heart, kidneys, intestinal lining and bone marrow (the cradle of the immune system). Fortunately, vitamins can often help spare normal tissues. For instance, animal studies show that vitamin E protects the heart against the damaging effects of adriamycin chemotherapy while allowing the drug to continue its cancer-fighting effects. [6] Vitamin E also has a unique and unexplained anti-cancer activity. [7] In mice with induced liver cancer, vitamins C and K augmented the tumor kill while reducing organ damage from six different chemotherapeutic drugs. [8] Vitamin A (isotretinoin) enhanced the tumor-killing capacity of the chemotherapy drugs vincristine and daunorubicin in 24 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [9] In animal studies, injections of vitamin C prior to radiation therapy provided host protection without affecting tumor kill, suggesting that vitamin C given prior to radiation therapy can help patients tolerate the treatment. [10]

Preliminary human studies also show promise for vitamin therapy. Finnish oncologists used high doses of nutrients (to replenish deficiencies identified by blood tests) along with chemotherapy and radiation for lung cancer patients. Normally, lung cancer carries a poor prognosis, with a paltry 1 percent expected survival after 30 months of routine medical treatment. In this study, however, eight of 18 patients (44 percent) who were given nutritional supplements were still alive 72 months after chemo and radiation therapy. The oncologists concluded that patients who started antioxidant therapy earliest were most likely to live longer or experience remission [11].

Bolstered immune functions:   The immune system is a complex collection of 20 trillion diversified cells that patrol the body looking for invaders such as bacteria, virus and tumor cells. When doctors say, “We think we got it all,” they mean, “There are less than a billion cancer cells in your body that are undetectable with current diagnostic equipment. Now we must rely on your intact immune system to find and destroy the remaining cancer cells.” Fortunately, an abundance of data links nutrient intake to the quality and quantity of immune factors that fight cancer. [12]

Selectively starving tumors:   Whereas essential nutrients support the patient’s healthy tissues, junk foods can nourish the cancer. For instance, sugar intake feeds the cancer and suppresses a patient’s immune system. Tumors are primarily what are called “obligate glucose metabolizers,” meaning they must feed on sugar. [13] Americans consume about 20 percent of their calories from refined sugar, but don’t tolerate it well due to stress, obesity, sedentary lifestyles and low chromium and fiber intake. An epidemiological study of cancer victims in 21 countries suggests that high-sugar intake is a major risk factor for breast cancer. [14] When animals were fed diets equal in calories from carbohydrates, the group eating more simple sugars developed significantly more mammary tumors than the group fed complex carbohydrates (starches). [15]

Cancer patients can blunt the rise in blood glucose by eating foods with a low glycemic index (meaning the sugars are more slowly absorbed into the bloodstream). From best to worst, glycemic indices are meats, nuts, seeds, oils, vegetables, legumes, fructose, whole grains, refined starches (i.e., white flour), fruit and refined sugar. It is best for cancer patients to avoid white sugar and sweet foods in general and never to eat anything sweet by itself. For instance, a patient may only eat a small piece of fresh fruit after a mixed meal of protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber and fat.

Nutrients Slow Cancer

In early nutrition research, nutrient functions were linked to classical nutrient deficiency syndromes–vitamin C and scurvy, vitamin D and rickets, niacin and pellagra. Now nutrition researchers are finding various levels of functions for nutrients. For example, while 10 IU of vitamin E is considered the RDA, 800 IU was shown to improve immune functions in healthy older adults. [16] While 10 mg of vitamin C will prevent scurvy in most adults and the RDA is 60 mg, 300 mg was shown to extend life span in males by an average of six years. [17]

RDAs apply to healthy people and don’t cover special nutrition needs that arise from metabolic disorders, chronic diseases, injuries, premature birth or drug therapies. [18] Most cancer patients probably need far more than the RDA of a variety of nutrients to aid recovery. Many nutritional factors both directly and indirectly help fight tumor cells. Mechanisms include preventing carcinogen formation, increasing detoxification, inhibiting abnormal cell replication controlling expression of malignancy, blocking precancerous cell divisions, and enhancing cell-to-cell communication. [19]

Oncologists at West Virginia Medical School in Morgantown randomized 65 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder into two groups. Group one received a one-a-day vitamin supplement providing the RDA, plus placebo pills. Group two received the RDA supplement plus 40,000 IU of vitamin A, 100 mg of vitamin B6, 2,000 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E and 90 mg of zinc. At 10 months, tumor recurrence was 80 percent in the control group (RDA supplement) and 40 percent in the megavitamin group. Five-year projected tumor recurrence was 91 percent for controls and 41 percent for the megavitamin group. Essentially, high-dose nutrients cut tumor recurrence in half. [20]

In a non-randomized clinical trial at the Hoffer Clinic in Victoria, British Columbia, Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., and Linus Pauling, Ph.D., instructed cancer patients to follow a diet of unprocessed food low in fat, dairy and sugar coupled with therapeutic doses of vitamins and minerals. All 129 patients received oncology care. The control group of 31 patients who did not receive nutrition support lived an average of less than six months. The 98 cancer patients who did receive the diet and supplement program were categorized into three groups: poor responders (19 patients or 20 percent) who lived an average of 10 months–a 75 percent improvement over the control group; good responders (47 patients or 48 percent), who had various cancers including leukemia, lung, liver and pancreas and who lived an average of six years; best responders (32 women or 33 percent) who had reproductive organ cancers (breast, cervix, ovary, uterus) and lived more than 10 years. In other words, nutrition support increased average life span by 12 to 21 fold for 80 percent of these patients [21].

Retrospective analyses show that therapeutic nutrition helps cancer patients. Of the 200 cancer patients studied who experienced “spontaneous regression,” 87 percent made a major change in diet (eating more vegetables and less meat), 55 percent used some form of detoxification (herbs, enemas, chelation therapy or other methods) and 65 percent used nutritional supplements. [22] Of 1,467 patients with pancreatic cancer who made no dietary changes, 146 (10 percent) were alive after one year, while 12 of the 23 matched pancreatic cancer patients (52 percent) consuming macrobiotic foods (primarily brown rice and vegetables with small amounts of fish and poultry) were still alive after one year. [23]

Parting Comments

The real reason for our losing battle with cancer lies in erroneous thinking. We are physical and metaphysical beings who must become part of the cure, just as surely as we are a part of the disease. We must embrace rational cancer therapies proven both effective and minimally damaging to normal tissues and we should encourage synergism between restorative therapies like nutrition and restrained conventional cancer intervention.

10 Surprising Tips for Managing Stress
from our friends at Canyon Ranch

Effective stress management has become more important than ever. What do you normally do when stress is getting to you? Many of us turn to exercise or talk to a therapist when feelings of anger, anxiety or frustration arise. But did you know that taking a different route to work or sleeping on a fresh set of sheets can also help alleviate stress?

Try some of these unusual techniques the next time you need to clear your mind or calm yourself down.

Focus on Your Breath
When you’re stressed, your heart rate can increase, which can make you feel even more stressed. Try this simple exercise:
Focus your attention on your heartbeat for a few seconds. Then put your hand on your belly to feel it rise and fall as you breathe, and say, This is my body breathing. As you inhale and exhale deeply, notice your heart rate slow and feelings of calmness grow.

Rewrite Your Script
Ever have the same negative thoughts so frequently that they become a never-ending tape-loop, playing over and over again in your mind? I’ll never get everything done. I know they’re going to fire me. I’m going to get sick.

When you start thinking worst-case scenarios, ask yourself if your concerns are based on facts or emotions. If the latter, imagine that these thoughts are part of a script that you’re writing, then change the lines. This can help create some distance between you and your worries, and remind you that you are in control of the story of your life.

Or … Channel Your Inner Storyteller
As an alternative, invent a fairytale ending to your “story.” It’s an entertaining distraction and can help you recognize that fantasies—both bad and good—are just that. The reality of your situation probably lies somewhere in between.
Tune Into a New Voice
If you can’t turn off the stressful negative talk in your head, try replacing it with talk that’s positive. Music can help, but listening to an audio book or an interesting interview can provide you with actual dialogue to focus on.

Control What You Can Control
Worrying about major life or world events is one kind of stress, but equally as bothersome are the daily, chronic stressors that cause aggravation and tension. To avoid irksome traffic, take an alternate route to work that might be longer but less crowded. If you find yourself too wound up to sleep after watching the evening news, skip it in favor of a lighthearted sitcom.

Find the Funny
Research shows that laughter reduces stress hormones and triggers some of the same mood-boosting effects as exercise. So do whatever tickles your funny bone.

Make Time for Play
Watch young children at play. They truly live in the moment, not worrying about the future or the past. Take a cue from them and play at something in which you can become totally engrossed.
Start a card game, set aside time to do a craft project or draw a picture. Not an artist? No problem. Pick a simple image, like a tree or have fun doodling in a notebook. Don’t worry about how it turns out, simply focus on the act of drawing—the way your pen or pencil moves across the paper as the image takes shape.

Nurture Another Living Thing
It is easier to limit the time spent focusing on your own stressful thoughts when you’re busy attending to something or someone else. Bake cookies for a neighbor, play with a pet or get outside and garden.

Engage Your Senses
Senses play a role in your levels of stress. Gentle music, calming scents like lavender and dim lighting can alleviate stress.
And touch is no exception. Wearing something soft, splurging on a cozy set of sheets or even just keeping a piece of your favorite fabric in your pocket to hold or stroke occasionally can make your feel comforted and relaxed.

Try Some Tools
Traditional meditation tools—prayer beads, gongs, chanting—can help you focus and relax.
Or experiment with different apps you can download for your smartphone or tablet. There’s even a Zen rock garden app that lets you rake the sand with your fingertips.

Timetable For A Vaccine
Against The New Coronavirus?

Maybe This Fall

Joe Palca, photographed for NPR, 17 January 2019, in Washington DC.by Joe Palca

Right now scientists are trying to accomplish something that was inconceivable a decade ago: create a vaccine against a previously unknown virus rapidly enough to help end an outbreak of that virus. In this case, they’re trying to stop the spread of the new coronavirus that has already infected tens of thousands of people, mainly in China, and given rise to a respiratory condition now known as COVID-19.

Typically, making a new vaccine takes a decade or longer. But new genetic technologies and new strategies make researchers optimistic that they can shorten that timetable to months, and possibly weeks — and have a tool by the fall that can slow the spread of infection.

What’s the urgency?

“Vaccines are really our most successful tool to prevent an infectious disease,” says David Weiner, executive vice president and director of the Vaccine & Immunotherapy Center at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.

It used to take a long time to make vaccines, because scientists had to isolate and grow the virus in the lab. But now, it’s possible to skip that step altogether and build a vaccine based on a virus’ genetic sequence.

Chinese scientists made that genetic sequence from the new coronavirus public in early January, just weeks after the first infections with the virus were reported. That prompted several labs to start work on building a vaccine.

Vaccines work by teaching an individual’s immune system to recognize an invading virus and neutralize it. The vaccine that Weiner and his colleagues are developing is what’s called a DNA vaccine.

They’ll first turn pieces of the new coronavirus’ genetic code (which is RNA) into complementary snippets of DNA. These snippets will then be injected into someone’s skin, where they will be taken up by skin cells. The skin cells will then turn those DNA sequences into proteins identical to the ones a virus would produce, and those will be what “teaches” the immune system to recognize the new virus.

Weiner and his colleagues are in the process of determining which viral sequences produce the best “teachers.”

This isn’t Wistar’s first stab at rapid vaccine development. Weiner and his team worked on a vaccine for Ebola after an outbreak of that virus in 2014.

Including the initial time needed for animal testing and human safety testing, “We were able to go from no vaccine to a vaccine tested in the clinic in about 18 months — 15 to 18 months,” he says. They also made a vaccine against the coronavirus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome, after an outbreak in South Korea. “And we were able to design and develop and move into the clinic in 11 months.”

Weiner says he’s hoping to halve that time with the vaccine they are making against the new coronavirus.

Keith Chappell at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, thinks he can do even better. He, too, has a vaccine that’s based on the virus’ genetic sequence. The Queensland team has come up with an approach it calls the molecular clamp. It works by improving the body’s immune response to certain viral proteins.

“Our goal was to be able to hit 16 weeks from sequence information to having a product that is shown to be safe and effective [in lab tests] and is ready for administration to the first humans,” Chappell says.

Right now, Chappell and his colleagues are also trying to figure out which genetic sequences will be most effective at helping the immune system recognize the coronavirus.

“Next steps will be moving into animal models for testing and also working out how to scale up to get to the levels that would be required in humans and beyond,” he says.

Both Chappell’s team in Australia and Weiner’s team in Philadelphia, in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company Inovio, are getting financial support from a fairly new organization called CEPI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. CEPI is a global partnership of public, private and philanthropic organizations; it’s also supporting efforts at the biotech companies Moderna and CureVac.

Among other vaccine efforts worldwide, the pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson is working on a vaccine, and GSK has also offered to help new vaccine efforts. Researchers at Imperial College London have developed a vaccine that’s already being tested in animals, and vaccine efforts are also reportedly underway in China.

CEPI CEO Richard Hatchett says the organization was created when people realized that an Ebola vaccine had been under development for a decade and it still took more than a year to get it to people when the 2014 Ebola outbreak occurred in western Africa.

“There were a number of enlightened global public health leaders who said, ‘You know, that shouldn’t happen. We should have some kind of an organization to develop vaccines against epidemic diseases,'” he says.

Even in the rosiest of scenarios, Hatchett says, once the vaccine is in hand, it still needs to get to the people who need it, and that takes time at least weeks to months, depending on the urgency.

Naturally, public health officials would like to have a vaccine as soon as possible. If the coronavirus outbreak pattern is anything like those of flu outbreaks, it will tend to taper off when the weather gets warmer and pick up as winter approaches and people spend more time indoors.

“We are making very aggressive efforts in the hopes of having a vaccine available — some form of vaccine available, potentially, as early as this fall,” Hatchett says.

“A philosophy of ALL Life,
is needed,
not of the Human alone.

It is not that the Human
needs to take care of all other Life
as a Moral obligation,
though that is certainly true,
it is that the Human is a small part of Life,
but one which possesses a characteristic
which is valuable to the survival

It was Life which developed that intelligence,
not the Human,
therefore its service is for all Life,
not merely the Human.

a caretaker in the service of Life,

the good Shepherd

World Renown Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease

We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong.. As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries, today is my day to right the wrong
with medical and scientific fact.

I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled “opinion makers.”  Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.

It Is Not Working!

These recommendations are no longer scientifically or Morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated – it is quite simply your body’s natural defense to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process, a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is helpful.

What thoughtful person would willfully expose himself repeatedly to foods or other substances that are known to cause injury to the body?  Well, smokers perhaps, but at least they made that choice willfully.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. This repeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

Let me repeat that: The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet recommended for years by mainstream medicine.

What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.

Regardless of where the inflammatory process occurs, externally or internally, it is the same. I have peered inside thousands upon thousands of arteries. A diseased artery looks as if someone took a brush and scrubbed repeatedly against its wall. Several times a day, every day, the foods we eat create small injuries compounding into more injuries, causing the body to respond continuously and appropriately with inflammation.

While we savor the tantalizing taste of a sweet roll, our bodies respond alarmingly as if a foreign invader arrived declaring war. Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, or processed with omega-6 oils for long shelf life have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades. These foods have been slowly poisoning everyone.

How does eating a simple sweet roll create a cascade of inflammation to make you sick?

Imagine spilling syrup on your keyboard and you have a visual of what occurs inside the cell. When we consume simple carbohydrates such as sugar, blood sugar rises rapidly. In response, your pancreas secretes insulin whose primary purpose is to drive sugar into each cell where it is stored for energy. If the cell is full and does not need glucose, it is rejected to avoid extra sugar gumming up the works.

When your full cells reject the extra glucose,
blood sugar rises producing more insulin
and the glucose converts to stored fat.

What does all this have to do with inflammation? Blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range. Extra sugar molecules attach to a variety of proteins that in turn injure the blood vessel wall. This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation. When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels.

While you may not be able to see it, rest assured it is there. I saw it in over 5,000 surgical patients spanning 25 years who all shared one common denominator — inflammation in their arteries.

Let’s get back to the sweet roll. That innocent looking goody not only contains sugars, it is baked in one of many omega-6 oils such as soybean. Chips and fries are soaked in soybean oil; processed foods are manufactured with omega-6 oils for longer shelf life. While omega-6’s are essential – they are part of every cell membrane controlling what goes in and out of the cell – they must be in the correct balance with omega-3’s.

If the balance shifts by consuming excessive omega-6, the cell membrane produces chemicals called cytokines that directly cause inflammation.

Today’s mainstream American diet has produced an extreme imbalance of these two fats. The ratio of imbalance ranges from 15:1 to as high as 30:1 in favor of omega-6. That’s a tremendous amount of cytokines causing inflammation. In today’s food environment, a 3:1 ratio would be optimal and healthy.

To make matters worse, the excess weight you are carrying from eating these foods creates overloaded fat cells that pour out large quantities of pro-inflammatory chemicals that add to the injury caused by having high blood sugar. The process that began with a sweet roll turns into a vicious cycle over time that creates heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and finally, Alzheimer’s disease, as the inflammatory process continues unabated.

There is no escaping the fact that the more we consume prepared and processed foods, the more we trip the inflammation switch little by little each day. The human body cannot process, nor was it designed to consume, foods packed with sugars and soaked in omega-6 oils.

There is but one answer to quieting inflammation, and that is returning to foods closer to their natural state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as colorful fruits and vegetables. Cut down on or eliminate inflammation- causing omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil and the processed foods that are made from them.

One tablespoon of corn oil contains 7,280 mg of omega-6;
soybean contains 6,940 mg.
Instead, use olive oil or butter from grass-fed beef.

Animal fats contain less than 20% omega-6 and are much less likely to cause inflammation than the supposedly healthy oils labelled polyunsaturated. Forget the “science” that has been drummed into your head for decades. The science that saturated fat alone causes heart disease is non-existent. The science that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol is also very weak. Since we now know that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, the concern about saturated fat is even more absurd today.

The cholesterol theory led to the no-fat, low-fat recommendations that in turn created the very foods now causing an epidemic of inflammation. Mainstream medicine made a terrible mistake when it advised people to avoid saturated fat in favor of foods high in omega-6 fats. We now have an epidemic of arterial inflammation leading to heart disease and other silent killers.

What you can do is choose whole foods your grandmother served and not those your mom turned to as grocery store aisles filled with manufactured foods. By eliminating inflammatory foods and adding essential nutrients from fresh unprocessed food, you will reverse years of damage in your arteries and throughout your body from consuming the typical American diet.
