Blessings Disguised As YOU / Flies in Infinity-Sky / Friday: Rollerland West / 2018-19 Anderson School Calendar

“It is never too late
to be
who you might have been.”

George Eliot

              There is no end.

We don’t live
for the moment.
We are alive
to live
in
the moment –
this moment,
that may be
all moments
in one.

And this moment
is Beautiful.
No,
not the place,
not this space,
but
YOU,
and YOUR trace
in Time.

      Our dreams can come true.

We don’t live
to dream.
We dream
of truly living.

For Life
is lived
not in living,
but in dreaming
of Life
as it could be
lived,
as if
we live
in a dream,
as if
our dreams
can come true.

  This moment is Beautiful.

When
can Life begin
again?
As Life
unfurls its splendor
we may come to realize
there is no
end,
only the beginning,
over and over
again.

Such is Life
that we cannot
be blinded by the
Truth,
only illumined.

“Let him who would move the World,
first move himself.”

Socrates

In Life,
all its Blessings
are disguised
as YOU.
And within,
you will find
that there is no
Home,
but
the Heart.
And the knocking
you hear
at the door,
is your precious Heart
beating in Time
with everything you
adore,
everything you implore
to wake again
in the Light
of each new Day
that dawns in your
Dreams,
and longs
to stay
embedded in your
Prayers,
and birthed
by a breathless word
that is whispered
by the Song
of your Life –
the Music
of each moment
you are alive.

“Nature loves courage.
You make the commitment
and Nature will respond to that commitment
by removing impossible obstacles.
Dream the impossible dream
and the world will not grind you under,
it will lift you up.”

Terence McKenna

A breathless word that is whispered.

My Friend,
every day
is Birth Day:
awakening
to a rising Sun
with Hope
in our Hearts.

“We are playing a game.
What you are basically, deep, deep down, far, far in,
is simply the fabric and structure of existence itself.
Reality itself is the fullness of total Joy.
But however, there’s no point of just sustaining this.
Let’s supposes that you were able every night to dream
any dream you wanted to dream.
You would fulfill all your wishes.
And after several nights, you would say
‘well that was pretty great’.
But now let’s have a surprise.
Let’s have a dream which isn’t under control.
Then, you would get more and more adventurous
and finally you would dream where you are
now.”

Alan Watts

Yes,
every day
is Birth Day.
As if
we are born again,
God
lights the big Candle
in the Sky,
and blows it out
at end of day,
with a wish
for our Tomorrow.

“What lies behind us
and what lies before us
are tiny matters
compared to what lies
within us.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Every Star
that shines at night,
brings a ray of Hope
ever so bright
for every one
in need of a Home,
for Hope.

And
the Light of your
Life
can shine just as
bright,
to show the way,
for someone else
in endless night.

There is no Home but the Heart.

My Dear Friend,
it’s not
the Winter wind
that’s cold.
It is knowing
you do not know,
that the World
is warmed
by your Heart.

You
cannot be blinded
by the Light
of day,
only
by the dark
of night,
the night that surrounds us,
is all around us,
day and night.

For the Stars
are not in this sky
at night.
They are in
your eyes,
and they shine
so bright.

Always know
that your Life
is the Light
of someone’s
World.

Goodnight.

.

“O World-ignorance,
Although You have shackled my feet,
I am free.
Although You have chained my hands,
I am free.
Although You have enslaved my body,
I am free.
I am free because
I am not of the body.
I am free because
I am not the body.
I am free because
I am the Soul-Bird
that flies in Infinity-Sky.
I am the Soul-Child
that dreams On the Lap
of the Immortal King Supreme.”

For Philosophy this week:  Project Nim

Taken out of his natural environment from birth, Nim was raised and nurtured like a Human child to discover if he could communicate with language. Following Nim’s extraordinary journey through Human society and the enduring impact he makes upon people along the way, this is a biography of an animal we tried to make Human. What we learn about his true nature, and indeed OUR OWN, is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling

In The Garden Of God’s Dream / A Beginner’s Guide to Healthy Eating / Friday: Chandor Gardens / 2018-19 School Calendar

Slung
against the sill
of the window,
the rays of the Sun
have fallen,
kissing goodby
the shadows that run
into the arms
of yesterday,
arms
that wave goodbye,
and
point the way,
to
Tomorrow.

And then,
the dark side
of day
is forced into
labor,
and we give birth
to our Dreams.

Every moment
passes away.
Every moment,
day by day.

But,
with every Prayer
we Pray,
our Heavenly Father
hears us say,
I Love You.
And
this Love
is here to
stay.

My Dear Friend,
there are
no shadows
on the wall,
if your Love
never existed
at all.

Love
defines us.
It refines us.
It is the
Light
within us
all.

As we
wander in this Beautiful Garden
of God’s Dream,
we never fully know
how much
we are
truly Loved.

    The Light within us all..

“There exists
only the present instant …

There is no yesterday nor any tomorrow,
but only Now … “

Meister Eckhart

Is it possible
that we dwell
in only one
dimension,
that everything is
Infinite,
and there is
only one
moment in Time –
that
everything else
is Illusion,
even death?

Our higher-self may exist in a
timeless realm.

Many scientists now believe
that Consciousness
is what makes up the Universe.
Everything seen and unseen, large and small,
are thoughts formed inside
a Cosmic Mind.
And because we are threads
of this Cosmic Consciousness,
WE
create our reality
with our thoughts and Beliefs.

                                We create our reality.

These scientists believe
this is how the Universe works.
We are part of a
Great Cosmic Mind
.

According to Tania Kotsos
in “You are One with the Universal Mind”:
“Each and every one of us is a manifestation
of this single Universal Consciousness.
There is profound truth in the ancient teaching
that we are all One.
We are all connected – not only to each other
but to all of Nature and to everything in the Universe.
This is the Law of One.
What you do to others, you do to yourself.
The way you treat Nature, you in fact treat yourself.
The separateness you “see” is an illusion.
The true nature of reality is non-dualistic,
meaning that while things may appear distinct,
they are not separate.”

“You are here.”
I’m always here.
I can’t go anywhere but here.
If I think I’ll leave here and go there,
when I get there,
here I am here
again.

“In light of it always being Now
and always being Here,
“Be Here Now”
isn’t just good advice,
it’s the only possibility.
If you want to experience the deepest truth
of things as they really are,
you are going to have to be in harmony
with being here,
now.”
Leigh Brasington

          Everything else is Illusion.

According to presentism,
only the present moment
is real.

“Our subjective sense of time
sits at the center of a perfect storm
of unsolved scientific mysteries:
consciousness, free will, relativity, quantum mechanics,
and the nature of time.”
Dean Buonomano
from: Your Brain Is a Time Machine:
The Neuroscience and Physics of Time

We may be inhabiting a Universe
in which all moments exist.
Einstein’s special theory of relativity
implies the existence
of space-time in which here, there and everywhere
exist alongside
the past, present and future.

This makes for
a case for
Eternalism,
the philosophy adopted from quantum theory
that the past, present, and future
all exist at the same time
and are not linear.

This
brings about deep
Philosophical and Spiritual
implications.

We seek wisdom and knowledge
from both the revelation of Scripture
and the physical world.
Scientific study is a valid way
of coming to an understanding
of God’s work.

The inscription
on the Ancient Greek Temple of Apollo at Delphi
left no room for misunderstanding:
“Know Thyself
and thou shalt know all the mysteries
of the gods and the Universe”.

Robert Lanza, M.D, scientist, theoretician
and author of “Biocentrism”
– How Life and Consciousness are the Keys
to Understanding the True Nature of the Universe

thinks there are many reasons why we won’t die –
that death is just
an illusion.

Everything
you see and experience right now
is a whirlwind of information
occurring in your mind.
Space and time are simply the tools
of putting things together.

Lanza points out that death
does not exist
in a timeless, spaceless World.

There is no distinction between
past, present, and future.
It is only a stubbornly persistent
Illusion.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

By Mary Elizabeth Frye
“Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there;
I did not die.”

Immortality doesn’t mean
a perpetual existence
in Time without end,
but rather resides
outside of time
altogether.

Albert Einstein once famously said:
” Reality is merely an
Illusion
,

although a very persistent one.”

Dear Friends,
Science
and Religion
are rapidly merging
and becoming
ONE!

They are both searching
for the same things,
and coming
to the same
conclusions.

“Conscious breathing of the Universe
creates a Symphony,
where we receive Life like a Gift
and release it
like a Present.”
André-Pascal Aappino

I find the study of this World
that we live in
to be enlightening, fascinating and interesting.
But more importantly,
the more I discover,
the more it solidifies my Faith in
God.

Faith is at the root of
Science and Religion.
They are not as separate
as you might think.
They both minister towards Mankind’s
craving for
Truth.

Yes,
Science explains much
of the natural World around us.
But,
Religion delves much, much deeper.
It explains the purpose and meaning
behind the natural World
and our existence in it.

I Love the way
a fourteen year old
explains:

“Science and Religion
are one in the same.
The only difference is in the way
they describe their theories.
Which contain similarities so similar
that you would believe they are one in the same.
Science clearly states
that everything was created by
and is energy.
Religion says God created
and is a part of everything.
Ask yourself what properties does energy have?
Well energy is infinite,
it can’t be created or destroyed,
always has and always will be.
God can be described similarly,
so similar in fact
that they could be called co-existing
or one in the same as depicted above.
By the way I am 14.”

WoW!

“My sheep hear My Voice,
and I know them,
and they follow me:
And I give unto them
Eternal Life;
and they shall never perish.”
John 10: 27-28

As your Heart
whispers in the wind,
about all the sorrow
and all the pain,
reflect upon
the Love that dwells
within.
For we are in
God’s Dream,
and He will
make His Love
real.

Not only is
God real,
YOU are real,
and He is in
You,
O Child of God.

Ask,
and He will be
with you,
now
and forever more.

Goodnight.

“May it be the shadows call
Will fly away.
May it be you journey on
To light the Day.
When the night is overcome,
You may rise to find the Sun.”

A Beginner’s Guide to Healthy Eating

The Nerd Fitness Diet Philosophy
read more

If I had to break down the Nerd Fitness Diet into a single sentence, it would go something like this:

“You’re smart and you know what real food is,
so stop eating crap.

You know what real food is: things that grew in the ground, on a tree, came out of the sea, ran on the land, or flew through the air.  Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts are all great examples of REAL food.

On top of that, you know what crap food is: food that comes from a drive-thru window, a vending machine, box, bag, or wrapper.  If it has an ingredient list longer than A Game of Thrones, it’s probably not good for you.  If it started out as real food and then went through fourteen steps to get to the point where you’re about to eat it, it’s probably not good for you.

Use this information and combine it with this mantra: “you can’t outrun your fork“.  When trying to lose weight, feel healthy, and get in shape, 80% (not an exaggeration) of your success or failure will come from how well you eat – which is why this point is one of the cornerstones of the Rebellion.

Mental Preparation

Eat more real food, you must.  Eat less junk food, you will.

I realize this concept is nothing new or revolutionary, but up until now the ability to actually DO IT has eluded you for some reason – your heart wasn’t in it, you got sick, went on vacation, got bored, or just decided that you couldn’t live without certain foods (SPOILER ALERT: you can).

I am NOT a fan of “diets”, detoxes, juice cleanses, or crash-fads that result in vast fluctuations in your body weight and health.  These are the useless solutions that are sold to you in pill form, in MIRACLE DIET INFORMATION ads online, and in super expensive health food stores.

You are smarter than that.

Want to know what I am a fan of?  Small changes that produce big results, like my boy Optimus Prime.

You need to determine for yourself how likely you are to succeed depending on how many changes at once you can deal with:  Some people can radically adjust everything they eat overnight and have no adverse effects. Other people wouldn’t dream of giving up certain foods and the second they go more than a few days without it they become Crankenstein.

That choice is yours.  You need to determine:

  • How averse are you to change?
  • How much weight you think you need to lose?
  • How quickly you need to lose that weight? (wedding? honeymoon? vacation?)
  • How likely are you to stick with your changes?

Like playing a video game, you need to determine what level of difficulty you’re up for.  Sure playing on Difficult gives you less room for error, but it also hones your skills far more quickly and produces more impressive results.  Or maybe you’re cool with playing on easy, because you don’t have to be as neurotic and can have more fun with it.

Long story short: decide what method works best for you based on how radical of a change you’re chasing.  Just don’t overdo it – small permanent successes will beat out massively ambitious failures 100 times out of 100.

This is the reason behind our 10-level nutritional system that we follow here at NF! Each level gets a bit more challenging and healthier, but you can progress at your own speed to make your changes stick!

Committing to change

If you are just eating better because somebody told you to or because you think you should (but don’t really have a real reason)…every day that you deprive yourself of your favorite foods will seem like torture – you’re going to fail miserably.

Instead, look at the changes you’re making to your diet as small steps on the path to a leveled up live.

You’re not depriving yourself of junk food because you want to suffer, but rather because you want a better life, a happier existence, and/or because you want to set a good example for your children.

As self-help guru Tony Robbins once said (I think it was him anyways): “nothing tastes as good as looking good feels.”

It’s time to give up that instant gratification you get from eating a donut, a bag of chips, or six slices of pizza.

You are not a slave to your taste buds.

As we’ve learned from the Matrix, you DO have a choice – stop letting the food companies, who have all designed these crappy foods for maximum addictiveness, hold you hostage.

Free your mind, free your taste buds.

I can’t believe I just typed that.

Wait, yes I can. I’m a huge dork.

We’re not looking for instant gratification.  We’re looking for a long life full of epic winning.

Eating for dummies

Okay! You’re finally ready to start making some changes, but you’re not quite sure what you’re going to change or how you’re going to change it.

Hopefully you passed basic math back in the day; if you didn’t and you made it this far in life…I’m not even mad, I’m impressed.  Anyhoo, remember this basic equation:

  • One pound of fat = 3500 calories

If we do some complex synergistic rocket geometric algebra here, we can determine that 3500/7 = 500.

That means that if you are interested in losing ONE pound per week, you need to be eating 500 less calories per day (or burning 500 calories more per day).

Optimally, your 500 calorie deficit per day would come from a combination of increased exercise and decreased calorie intake, but lets just say for today that you’re going to focus on eating 500 less calories per day.

“But Steve, how do I do that?”

Great question, thank you so much for asking!

I HIGHLY recommend you spend the next three to four days tracking your calorie intake.

And when I say track them, I mean track EVERY FREAKING THING YOU EAT.  Yeah, those handful of M&M’s you stole off of Milton’s desk at work count.  So does that half can of coke you found in your back seat cupholder from last June.  So does the handful of french fries you stole from Paul while he was in the bathroom at MacDonald’s.

Every.

Single.

Calorie.

But counting calories is boring, right? And who has time to calculate all of that? Right?  Luckily, there’s this thing called the Internet – sign up for a calorie tracking site and start tracking!

Now, once you have a few days under your belt, take a look back and determine an average for what you’ve been eating and how many total calories you’ve been eating daily.

To lose a pound a week, knock 500 calories out of that diet per day.  If you want to lose half a pound a week, knock 250 calories out of your diet per day.

It might mean one less snack, ordering a smaller lunch, or cutting back on soda (liquid calories are BRUTAL). Note, if you track calories for a few days and you don’t lose weight, you’re probably underestimating or under reporting how you much food you eat.

Your body DOES obey the laws of thermodynamics (energy in, energy out), and your metabolism isn’t slow! You’re simply eating too much. I promise! Take 3 minutes to watch this if you’re convinced your metabolism doesn’t operate like normal:

A quick note: if you are used to eating 4,000 calories a day, switching to 2,000 per day will probably make you want to gnaw your arm off – instead, slowly decrease your calorie intake by a few hundred calories each week.

Think of your stomach like a muscle that needs to be trained – it needs to learn that it can function and operate on way less food than you’ve been giving it.

This is the most easy-to-understand method of weight loss – you still eat all of the same foods, you just have to adjust how much you are eating of those same foods.

Unfortunately, this method also produces the least optimal healthy results in my opinion and is the easiest to abandon (eating only HALF of something deliciously unhealthy is tougher than not eating it at all, in my opinion!) but it’s a great place for a newbie to start taking control of his/her eating.

Quality of Calories

Once you’ve learned how many calories you’re consuming, you might start to see a few pounds disappear, but it’s just a step in the right direction.  Hopefully this won’t come as a shock to you, but 2000 calories worth of gingerbread cookies doesn’t fuel your body the same way 2,000 calories of meat, vegetables, and fruit would.

Not all calories are created equal!

Your body digests certain types of nutrients differently, using them for all sorts of bodily functions: building muscle, transporting nutrients, fueling various organs or muscles, or storing energy as fat for later use.  Let’s take a look at how to compose a basic meal:

Protein: When you exercise, your muscles are broken down and then use protein to rebuild themselves stronger while recovering. Protein absolutely NEEDS to be a main component of every meal.  Aim for one gram per pound (two grams per KG) of lean body weight, or just do one gram per pound of body weight if you don’t want to do the math – with an upper limit of 200 grams.  Sources of protein include chicken, eggs, beef, pork, fish, nuts, legumes, quinoa, and most dairy products.

Carbohydrates: When you eat carbohydrates, they get converted to glucose (sugar) in your system, which is then used to provide energy for all sorts of body functions to take place.  Vegetables and/or fresh fruit are quality sources of carbohydrates, with grains being less so in my opinion…but we’ll get to more grains later. There are certainly bad carbohydrates (processed carbs, refined grains, and more), and those are the ones we want to avoid.  Unless you’re a marathon runner, you can function with WAY less carbs than you’re probably consuming now.

Fat:  Fat is easily the most misunderstood macro-nutrient in your diet; long story short: fat is absolutely critical to your body and should make up a BIG portion of your daily calories.  Things like avocados, almonds, olive oil, walnuts, and almond butter are great sources of healthy fat (polyunsaturatured and monounsaturated).  If you take this stance on saturated fat (personally, I do), then full fat milk, coconut milk, and fatty cuts of meat will provide you with sources of saturated fat.

The first thing I want to make sure you know is that the fat in your food is not what made you fat. It wasn’t until the past 40-50 years that poor fat was suddenly vilified (after a few scientific leaps of faith with no real evidence to back it up), which is why every “healthy” food these days is “low fat” or “fat free!”

Not surprisingly, our country is fatter and more unhealthy than ever, and yet people still avoid fat at all costs and consume more “healthy whole grains!” (ugh).

So what IS making us fat? Simple, refined, and/or processed carbohydrates! Rather than spend thirty minutes typing it out, I’d recommend instead that you spend three  minutes to watch this video to show WHY excessive carbohydrate consumption can make you fat:

For more in-depth reading on this subject, I highly recommend checking out Why We Got Fat by Gary Taubes, also the author of “What if it’s All Been a Big Fat Lie,” an must-read article that blew the doors off my thoughts on healthy back when I started my education.

So, if you’re looking to kick start your weight loss journey with healthy eating, start by swapping out processed refined carbohydrates for more natural foods.

Depending on your level of commitment and your ability to handle change, you might be better off making one small change every other week rather than a whole bunch of changes simultaneously.

This is a HUGE part of our 1-on-1 Coaching Program – working closely with each person to see what their lives are like and guiding them to make slow changes to their diet so they actually stick!

Combine this with accountability, check-ins, and a workout program, and we’ve seen some pretty amazing results (like with Leslie here, a single mom who works super long hours that lost 100 lbs with our coaching).

Tell Your Heart To Say, “YES” / Freeing Your Truest Self / Friday: 1/2 Price Books and A Movie / 2018-19 School Calendar

“Faith
is the assurance of things hoped for,

the conviction of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1

   Life begins again and again.

Taking
a leap of Faith
is just
letting your mind
quietly tell your Heart
to say,
“Yes”.

And
when you do,
when all the trials and sorrows
and suffering and pain
have led you
to this moment,
you will discover,
you were looking for
Home,
and you were Home,
and did not
know it.

We all live under the same sky.

There is Glorious Splendor
in our quest,
this hunger for Life
that lives within,
this thirst for Love
that will never end,
as each day by day
Dawns anew,
and Life
begins again and again.

“We all live under the same sky,
but we don’t all have
the same Horizon.”
Konrad Adenauer

And,
in the Dawn
of our Faith,
we too
are born anew,
and live again.

Let your mind quietly tell your Heart to say, “Yes”.

My Dear Friends,
we are
more than what we seem,
Oh Child of God,
of Unending Grace.

We will never behold
what can never be told,
never held in the mind
of Man,
never found
in Time or Space.
But,
through our Faith
we are born again
by God’s Everlasting
and Loving Grace.

In the Dawn of our Faith.

Like
a candle in the wind,
flickering for the
moment,
the Light
of your Life
can become a reflection
of God’s Love.

Have Faith,
my Friend,
and let the Light
of God’s Love
shine from within.

We don’t all have the same Horizon.

Can knowledge
arise
to reassure someone
that Life is not
a singular, lonely journey,
leading to nowhere,
to nothing
but death?

Life is complicated,
vast and filled with conflicting elements.
No one of us can find
all the answers.
Even endless nights
of worry and toil
will not solve
all of Life’s mysteries.
We may stay up all night
and worry all day,
trying to think through and understand
the complicated events
and circumstances of our lives.
But we will never
fully understand.

“When I applied my mind to know Wisdom,
and to see the business that is done on Earth,
how neither day nor night one’s eyes see sleep;
then I saw all the work of God,
that man cannot find out
the work that is done under the sun.
However much man may toil in seeking,
he will not find it out;
even though a wise man claims to know,
he cannot find it out.

Ecclesiastes 8:16-17

These words were penned
by one of the Wisest men
of the ancient World,
a man known for Wisdom
throughout his reign as
the King of Israel.
And yet,
he admitted that mankind
cannot know
all the answers.

Our diligence in thoughtful labor
will not unravel Life’s mysteries:
“However much man may toil in seeking,
he will not find it out.”
We will still be left asking
the Eternal,
Why?

“For as the Heavens are higher than the Earth,
so are My Ways higher than your ways
and My Thoughts than your thoughts,”
Isaiah 55:9

Hebrews 11:1 reassures us
that Faith  is
“being sure of what we hope for
and certain of what we do not see.”

Nothing
is more important than Faith,
our Belief in and Trust
in something without proof.
The Bible
has much to say about Faith
and how important it is.
It is so important
that without Faith,
we have no place with God,
and it is impossible to please Him.
(Hebrews 11:6).

Faith is Belief
in the one, true God,
without actually seeing Him.

“Bad things happen to good people
just about as often as they

happen to bad people.
We have not been given a shield
protecting us from misfortune,
but there is within all of us,
waiting to be discovered,
the strength to deal with adversity,
to overcome it, and learn from it
so we can still find
Love, laughter and joy
despite it.”

Michael Josephson

In this time of fear
When prayer so often
Proved in vain,
Hope seemed like the summer birds
Too swiftly flown away.
Yet now I’m standing here,
With Heart so full I can’t explain,
Seeking Faith and speaking words
I never thought I’d say.
There can be miracles
when you Believe.
Though Hope is frail
It’s hard to kill,
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve
When you believe.
Somehow you will.

You will when
you Believe.”

Stephen Schwartz

By Faith
Abel offered a pleasing sacrifice to the Lord;
by faith Noah prepared the ark in a time when rain was unknown;
by faith Abraham left his home and obeyed God’s command
to go he knew not where, then willingly offered up his only son;
by faith Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt;
by faith Rahab received the spies of Israel and saved her life.

Many heroes of Faith
are mentioned in the Bible
“who through Faith
conquered kingdoms,
administered justice,
gained what was promised;
shut the mouths of Lions,
quenched the fury of flames,
escaped the edge of the sword;
had weakness was turned to strength;
became powerful in battle and routed armies”.
Faith is demonstrated by action.

Let YOUR Faith
be YOUR strength.

Goodnight.

  Able to “move mountains”.

“Faith”,
Jesus says,
“If it were the size of even
the smallest of the seeds,
the mustard bush,
they would be able to
move mountains.”
Matthew 17:20

“Stress, depression, and anxiety
are caused when we are living
to please others.”
Paulo Coehlo

Freeing Your Truest Self
When You’ve Been Anxious
to Please Everyone Else

I came from a broken and very poor family. My father left the house during my teenage years, and it was just my mother, little brother, and I remaining.

Like most single parents going through the hardships of single handedly caring for two children, my mother was often anxious about my well-being. And she overcompensated for her anxiety by being overbearing.

I unfortunately inherited this anxiety.

For the longest time, it was a daily battle for me.

You know the feeling.

Your muscles tense up, you feel an overwhelming sense of fear, and your heart begins to race.

It’s the uncomfortable worries that surface as you play out worst-case scenarios in your head.

Though we can feel anxiety about debt, work pressures, or any number of challenges, for me, it was mostly triggered by the fear of not being good enough and disappointing other people.

Professor Harry Lacey

Professor Lacey teaches Latin, Greek & Epic Literature.

My struggle with anxiety was one of the most crippling experiences, and as a result, I never grew.

So, is it really possible to overcome anxiety?

I realized the answer is yes, but first I needed to understand where my anxiety was coming from.

Anxiety is Your Brain Trying to Protect You

There’s a small, almond-sized part of your brain known as the amygdala whose main job is to look out for your survival. For example, if a mountain lion were chasing you, your amygdala would trigger fear so that it would activate your body to run for your life or grab a weapon to fight.

Your amygdala doesn’t only watch out for your physical survival. You feel the same kind of fear when you are nervous about giving a public speech or going on a first date.

When you experience anxiety in these situations, it’s your brain’s way of trying to help you survive emotionally.

Unfortunately, your amygdala is not the greatest at accurately gauging how dangerous a situation might be. It often blows things way out of proportion.

I remember what it felt like when I was a kid and wouldn’t see my mother the whole day because she was always working late. I’d wait for her to talk about something I was excited about only to have her turn the conversation toward things about myself that I should be improving.

Even though this was her way of trying to make sure I survive in the world, because we were barely getting by, the constant requests to do things better made me feel like I wasn’t good enough.

It felt like no matter what I did, I could never fully please her. If I accomplished something she requested of me, I’d get a quick “thank you,” then she’d move on to talk about what else I should do.

Philippe Arrighi teaches French and French History and Culture.

I found it most hurtful when she would talk about how great someone else was. She’d update me about some amazing thing that one of her client’s children had accomplished and suggest that I should try to follow in that person’s footsteps.

All that did was make me think that something was wrong with me.

I ended up with low self-esteem, and because I thought I was worthless, nothing was scarier than the thought of making mistakes and failing, because that would confirm that I was not good enough.

This was why I never took too many risks and searched only for options that seemed to have a guarantee for success.

My anxiety made me develop a behavior of perfectionism, and it was ruining my life. The more I let it make my decisions for me, or lack of decisions for that matter, the further I felt from who I wanted to become.

Ironically, becoming a perfectionist was my brain’s solution to helping me feel good enough.

“Perfectionism
is the belief that if we live perfect,
look perfect, and act perfect,
we can minimize or avoid the pain
of blame, judgement, and shame.
It’s a shield.”

Brené Brown

This toxic behavior put me in an endless cycle of working hard to achieve all sorts of cool things so that one day, I might feel good about myself. In reality, every accomplishment felt anti-climactic. I was always dissatisfied and constantly looking for the next big accomplishment to chase.

No matter how much I succeeded, it was never enough for me, just like I never felt like I was enough for other people.

It wasn’t until I met someone who could see the real me that I finally figured out how to overcome my anxiety.

The Power of a Safe Space

When I was a teenager, a man named Anthony saved my life. If it weren’t for him, I would’ve gone down a much more self-destructive path.

He never questioned the mistakes I’d made unless I wanted to talk about them. And when I didn’t want to talk about them, he’d openly share his own horrible mistakes.

I never once felt judged by him, nor did I feel like he had a set of expectations for me.

Anthony helped me feel safe.

People touched by you will not be ordinary anymore.

People touched by
you will not be
ordinary anymore.

I realized for the first time that for most of my life, I didn’t feel safe to be who I was.

I was almost always in survival mode, shielding myself emotionally. All my behavior was in reaction to the anxiety of not feeling good enough for other people.

Being in a safe space finally helped me put my guard down and look at myself objectively. It was in these moments that I became deeply aware that being a perfectionist wasn’t the answer to my anxiety, and that I was heading down a path toward depression.

I didn’t come to this realization sooner because the pre-frontal cortex, the thinking part of the brain, is turned off when the brain’s in survival mode. This pre-frontal cortex is what’s capable of rational behavior, critical thinking, and emotional regulation.

The only way to calm down the survival mode of your brain is to place yourself in environments where you feel safe.

The thinking part of your brain will help you understand where your anxiety comes from and figure out an effective way to handle it.

It was in this safe space that I finally realized that I had the power and responsibility to stay true to myself.

How I Overcame My Anxiety

Deep down, I hated myself for constantly giving in to other people’s expectations of me and for letting their standards determine my self-worth.

But the reality is that I let this happen.

And here’s the even harsher truth.

I let it happen because it’s much easier to live a life that someone else wants you to live.

The scariest part is that once you take ownership of the one life you have, you have no one to blame if things go wrong. At least following someone else’s path gave me the right to blame him or her.

My brain would rather me let others’ standards dictate my life and sacrifice my mental health than do anything that might make me experience the emotional pain of looking like a failure and falling short of someone’s standards.

Now that I knew all my anxiety was coming from my brain being in survival mode, I needed to figure out a way to regularly calm it down.

A beautiful sunset at the Anderson School.

This was when I discovered meditation.

I learned that brain scans in studies have revealed that meditation calms the amygdala and activates the thinking part of your brain.

I started using the free version of an app called Head space, and I learned how effective it can be to simply be present and enter a state of awareness.

For most of my life, I’d been tossed left and right by my circumstances and was a slave to my emotional reactions. Meditation helped me become more aware of why I was behaving the way I did, especially in these reactive moments.

I finally saw that almost all my anxiety led to irrational thoughts and behaviors.

For example, I remember when I decided to start my business, it was hard to build my audience. Nobody was reading any of my articles, and I wasn’t getting any traffic on my website.

I’ve given up on other ventures plenty of times before, and I was ready to give up on this one too. I took it personally and started telling myself the familiar narrative that I didn’t have what it takes. I just wasn’t good enough. Then I recognized that I was reacting to my anxiety as I’d always done, and I could choose a different way.

I was able to be aware and think to myself, “I’m feeling anxious right now because this moment feels similar to a couple of painful experiences I had in the past.”

The moment I became aware of this I gave myself the power to make a choice rather than to habitually react.

So I told myself, “The old you would put yourself down and give up, but the new you can try to assess the situation objectively and see what is really setting you back.”

After doing this, I was finally able to grasp that I didn’t have business challenges because of my character, but most likely because of the strategies and tactics I was using to market myself. Once I used different strategies, I got different results.

Your Best Life Starting Now

In order to live our best life, we have to calm our anxiety about disappointing other people and not being good enough, and find the courage to be true to ourselves.

It is one of the hardest decisions you will ever make, but it will also be one of the best.

The first step to changing my life for the better was having awareness. The next key step was focus.

What you focus on is usually what you will gravitate toward.

The key to living your best life is not to run away from who you were, but to run toward who you want to become.

As I meditated, my anxiety calmed down and I started to have such a clear idea of the person I wanted to be.

I no longer wanted to be the anxious person who thought he was worthless. I wanted to become a great husband, father, and leader. Rather than worrying about not being able to meet these expectations, I started to engage the thinking part of my brain to figure out what needed to be done.

I didn’t have all the answers, but I knew I could only make this life I wanted a reality if I started making changes and learned as I went.

I wanted to learn what it took to become a better husband, so I started going to marriage counseling.

I wanted to become a better parent, so I researched how children are wired and how to best communicate with them.

I wanted to be a better leader, so I invested in credible leadership and coaching courses.

And I did these things not because I wanted to prove something to myself, but more because it mattered to me deeply and I knew it was a part of who I truly was.

I’ve spent too much time running away from opportunities for growth because I was afraid I might not be good enough. The problem, though, was that I was running away without knowing where I wanted to go. I ended up in destinations where I felt more lost than ever, and my anxiety kept catching up to me in the end.

Now, whenever I experience anxiety, I tell myself, “This is anxiety.” I thank my brain for looking out for me and then I ask myself, “What do I need to focus on in this moment, and how can I get it?”

Then, surprisingly, the anxiety calms down and the thinking part of my brain activates to try and figure out the best way to go about things.

This is what changed everything for me.

And I know it can for you too.

While people might have expectations for you, the world desperately needs the power that comes from you living your most authentic life.

If you are battling anxiety about not being good enough or pleasing other people, take a moment to slow down and acknowledge what you are experiencing. Then, identify what you need to feel safe so you can turn on the thinking part of your brain and start uncovering the answers you most need. That might mean meditating, talking to a close friend, or even just getting out in nature for a walk.

It’s time to take a deep breath, be compassionate with yourself, and decide who it is you want to be.

Stay aware and focused and you’ll be there sooner than you think.

Starting Over is Forfeiting the End / Where JOY Hides and How To Find It / Friday: Modern Art Museum

What we endear,
defines
what we can endure.
The weather
in the mind
may be
cloudy or clear,
intemperate,
or to your Sacred Heart,
very dear.

“I have been thinking about this for a long time;
trying to understand how we are asked
by merely waking
to endure the hardships of living
and how we are asked,
in the midst of that struggle,
and often through the openings that struggle creates,
to endear ourselves
into the Fabric of Life.”
Mark Nepo

But
True Love,
My Dear Friend,
is a term of
endearment
meant for us all.
From the start,
God expresses his deep and abiding
affection for us.

The Love of God,
is beyond definition.
It defies even death.
The Ultimate Love
of God
defines
Eternity.

“Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.”
Frederick M. Lehman
(The Love of God)

My Friends,
give Life,
and the Love of Life,
a new beginning
so the morrow
may become a friend.
Starting over
is forfeiting the end.

In our stories
of Hope,
we harvest
every Season
of the Heart.

Joy,
the second fruit of the Spirit,
(Galatians 5:22)
is more than just happiness.
There is
a Joy that God gives
that far exceeds
mere Human cheerfulness.

You are not shade or shadow.

Seeing clearly,
we find
our mortal shapes
made of clay,
walk in the LIGHT
of God’s Pure Love
day by day.

He can make you laugh,
and teach you
once again,
to play and have fun,
and bask
in the Glorious Light
of His Sun.

You are not
shade or shadow.
Your Spirit
need never lie
in the field
fallow.

My Friend,
the shape
of Life’s Compass,
is in the likeness
of the Cross.
Such Compassion,
as was His suffering
and sacrifice,
truly
shows us the
WAY.

The shape of Life’s Compass.

Our perilous imaginations
can preclude
the common denominator
of common sense.

What ultimately matters
has nothing to do
with matter,
and everything
to do with
the Spirit.

Go
to your Heavenly Father
in Prayer.
He is listening
to hear the
the sound of your voice,
just as YOU
long to hear
the sound
of your precious
Child.

“Arise,
Cry aloud in the night,

At the beginning of the night watches;
Pour out your Heart like water
Before the presence of the Lord.”
Lamentations 2:19

Yes,
a Child of yours,
crying aloud
in need in the night,
would find YOU
to be
by their side.
And so it is
with your Father
in Heaven Above.

“No temptation has overtaken you
except what is COMMON to mankind.
And God is Faithful;
He will not let you be tempted
beyond what you can bear.
But when you are tempted,
he will also provide a way out
so that you can endure it.”
First Corinthians 10:13

This Scripture
teaches us something wonderful.
If we belong to God,
He will not allow any difficulty
to come into our lives
that we are not capable of bearing.
With every temptation,
with every trial that comes our way,
God will remain Faithful
to us;
He will provide
a way to endure.

Goodnight.

Where JOY Hides
and How To Find It.

by Ingrid Fetell Lee

“I know what joy feels like, but what is it, exactly?” And I found that even scientists don’t always agree, and they sometimes use the words “joy” and “happiness” and “positivity” more or less interchangeably. But broadly speaking, when psychologists use the word joy, what they mean is an intense, momentary experience of positive emotion — one that makes us smile and laugh and feel like we want to jump up and down. And this is actually a technical thing. That feeling of wanting to jump up and down is one of the ways that scientists measure joy. It’s different than happiness, which measures how good we feel over time. Joy is about feeling good in the moment, right now. And this was interesting to me because as a culture, we are obsessed with the pursuit of happiness, and yet in the process, we kind of overlook joy.

So this got me thinking: Where does joy come from? I started asking everyone I knew, and even people I just met on the street, about the things that brought them joy. On the subway, in a café, on an airplane, it was, “Hi, nice to meet you. What brings you joy?” I felt like a detective. I was like, “When did you last see it? Who were you with? What color was it? Did anyone else see it?” I was the Nancy Drew of joy.

(Laughter)

And after a few months of this, I noticed that there were certain things that started to come up again and again and again. They were things like cherry blossoms and bubbles … swimming pools and tree houses … hot air balloons and googly eyes –

(Laughter)

and ice cream cones, especially the ones with the sprinkles. These things seemed to cut across lines of age and gender and ethnicity. I mean, if you think about it, we all stop and turn our heads to the sky when the multicolored arc of a rainbow streaks across it. And fireworks – we don’t even need to know what they’re for, and we feel like we’re celebrating, too. These things aren’t joyful for just a few people; they’re joyful for nearly everyone. They’re universally joyful. And seeing them all together, it gave me this indescribably hopeful feeling.

The sharply divided, politically polarized world we live in sometimes has the effect of making our differences feel so vast as to be insurmountable. And yet underneath it all, there’s a part of each of us that finds joy in the same things. And though we’re often told that these are just passing pleasures, in fact, they’re really important, because they remind us of the shared humanity we find in our common experience of the physical world.

But I still needed to know: What is it about these things that makes them so joyful? I had pictures of them up on my studio wall, and every day, I would come in and try to make sense of it. And then one day, something just clicked. I saw all these patterns: round things … pops of bright color … symmetrical shapes … a sense of abundance and multiplicity … a feeling of lightness or elevation. When I saw it this way, I realized that though the feeling of joy is mysterious and elusive, we can access it through tangible, physical attributes, or what designers call aesthetics, a word that comes from the same root as the Greek word “aísthomai,” which means, “I feel,” “I sense,” “I perceive.”

And since these patterns were telling me that joy begins with the senses, I began calling them “Aesthetics of Joy”; the sensations of joy. And in the wake of this discovery, I noticed something that as I walked around, I began spotting little moments of joy everywhere I went – a vintage yellow car or a clever piece of street art. It was like I had a pair of rose-colored glasses, and now that I knew what to look for, I was seeing it everywhere. It was like these little moments of joy were hidden in plain sight.

And at the same time, I had another realization, that if these are the things that bring us joy, then why does so much of the world look like this?

(Laughter)

Why do we go to work here? Why do we send our kids to schools that look like this? Why do our cities look like this? And this is most acute for the places that house the people that are most vulnerable among us: nursing homes, hospitals, homeless shelters, housing projects. How did we end up in a world that looks like this?

We all start out joyful, but as we get older, being colorful or exuberant opens us up to judgment. Adults who exhibit genuine joy are often dismissed as childish or unserious or self-indulgent, and so we hold ourselves back from joy, and we end up in a world that looks like this.

But if the aesthetics of joy can be used to help us find more joy in the world around us, then couldn’t they also be used to create more joy? I spent that last two years scouring the planet, looking for different ways that people have answered this question.

And this led me to the work of the artist Arakawa and the poet Madeline Gins, who believed that these kinds of environments are literally killing us. And so they set out the create an apartment building that they believed would reverse aging. And this is it.

(Laughter)

(Applause)

It’s a real place, just outside Tokyo. I spent a night there, and it’s a lot.

(Laughter)

The floors undulate, so you don’t end up walking around so much as kind of bouncing around the apartment, and there are bright colors in every direction. I’m not sure I left any younger, but it’s as if, by trying to create an apartment that would make us feel youthful, they ended up creating one that was joyful. And yes, this is a bit much for everyday life, but it made me wonder: What about the rest of us? How do we bring these ideas back into the real world?

So I started finding people who were doing just that. For example, this hospital, designed by the Danish artist Poul Gernes. Or these schools, transformed by the non-profit Publicolor. What’s interesting is that Publicolor has heard from school administrators who say that attendance improves, graffiti disappears and kids actually say they feel safer in these painted schools. And this aligns with research conducted in four countries, which shows that people working in more colorful offices are actually more alert, more confident and friendlier than those working in drab spaces.

Why would this be the case? Well, as I started to trace back our love of color, I found that some researchers see a connection to our evolution. Color, in a very primal way, is a sign of life, a sign of energy. And the same is true of abundance. We evolved in a world where scarcity is dangerous, and abundance meant survival. So, one confetto – which happens to be the singular of confetti, in case you were wondering –

(Laughter)

isn’t very joyful, but multiply it, and you have a handful of one of the most joyful substances on the planet. The architect Emmanuelle Moureaux uses this idea in her work a lot. This is a nursing home she designed, where she uses these multicolored spheres to create a feeling of abundance. And what about all those round things I noticed? Well, it turns out neuroscientists have studied this, too.

They put people into fMRI machines, and they showed them pictures of angular objects and round ones. And what they found is that the amygdala, a part of the brain associated in part with fear and anxiety, lit up when people looked at angular objects, but not when they looked at the round ones. They speculate that because angles in nature are often associated with objects that might be dangerous to us, that we evolved an unconscious sense of caution around these shapes, whereas curves set us at ease.

You can see this in action in the new Sandy Hook Elementary School. After the mass shooting there in 2012, the architects Svigals + Partners knew that they needed to create a building that was secure, but they wanted to create one that was joyful, and so they filled it with curves. There are waves running along the side of the building, and these squiggly canopies over the entryway, and the whole building bends toward the entrance in a welcoming gesture.

Each moment of joy is small, but over time, they add up to more than the sum of their parts. And so maybe instead of chasing after happiness, what we should be doing is embracing Joy and finding ways to put ourselves in the path of it more often. Deep within us, we all have this impulse to seek out joy in our surroundings. And we have it for a reason. Joy isn’t some superfluous extra. It’s directly connected to our fundamental instinct for survival. On the most basic level, the drive toward joy is the drive toward life.

To Stand Upon the Altar of God / Best Ways to Praise / Friday: Main Event

The World
if filled with Beauty.
And all because
of YOU.

The Beauty of this Earth
would not exist
without
God’s Love for
YOU.

Yes.
It is here
for you.

It is
a simple fact
of physics,
that nothing exists
without an observer.

The Beauty
of this Earth
is truly
a Gift from God.
Open your eyes
and enjoy
an adventure with
Nature.

He
created you
to Love.
And His expressions
of LOVE
abound all around.

Breathe deeply,
and walk as far
as you can
in Love.
Venture into
the vast and Beautiful
wilderness
of the Mind
of God.

To stand
upon this Earth,
is to stand
upon the Altar
of God.
And this Earth,
in all its abundant
Natural Beauty,
is God’s expression
of His Love
for YOU,
His Child.

“For it is God
who works in you,
both to will and to work
for His good pleasure.”

Philippians 2:13

My Dear Friends,
God
Created YOU
for a reason:
to Love you,
to surround you
with Beauty.

“In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:6

If
your intention
is to see
all the Beauty that exists,
in YOU,
in your World,
in each other,
then you shall
see it.

Look
for the Beauty.
It is here.
It is there.
It is
everywhere.
It is in you.
It is
YOU.

“See what great Love
the Father has lavished on us,
that we should be called
children of God!
And that is what we are!”
John 3:1

What is
Sacred
is ALL so
Beautiful,
far, far more
than we shall
every know.

There is great
Beauty
that resides
in the Word of God.
His Truth
is far more Beautiful
than anything
we can envision.
And,
His Truth
is in you.
For YOU
are His beloved.
And
there is no greater
Love.

My Friends,
Love
is the Ultimate Truth.
And God’s Love
for you
is Beauty beyond
our comprehension.
It is
brighter than the
Sun.
It dances
upon the Waters
of our Faith.
It sparkles
in the darkness
of our fears.

We
are beloved
of God,
and of each other,
and shall
by the Grace of our Father,
Love each other
and Live forever
in the Warm Embrace
of God,
and each other.

Our LOVE,
not only unites
us,
it is us.
Our lives
are intertwined:
mine and yours,
yours and mine.
They are ours,
not yours
and mine.

“No man is an island,
entire of itself;
every man
is a piece of the continent,
a part of the main.”
– John Donne

We
do not live Life
ourselves.
We live Life
through
the lives of others,
and by the will
of those around
us.

When
you live inside
the Heart
of another,
you become
real.
And those few
precious moments
become
the only moments
that are real.

                  Infinite possibilities.

In every
moment
that are infinite
possibilities
for the future.

Goodnight.

The 10 Best Ways to Praise

.
  1. Don’t overdo it. When your toddler puts his pants on by himself for the first time, it’s worth making a big deal about it. But gushing over everyday achievements (“You finished your carrots — yay!”) will cause your child to discount praise he’s truly earned. It may also make him feel he constantly has to do things to impress you.
    .
  2. Be specific. Instead of saying, “Wow, that’s a great drawing,” say, “Look at that great sun you made, and you even included clouds!” This lets your child know you’re really taking notice of her work and encourages her to do more, says Janice Fletcher, EdD, director of the child development lab at the University of Idaho in Moscow.
    .
  3. Emphasize the effort, not the outcome. When your child is learning a new activity, don’t comment on how well she does it. Instead, compliment her enthusiasm and progress (“You worked really hard in soccer, and I noticed you’re starting to dribble the ball better”). When 7-year-old Rachel Geissler started a dance class, she had trouble mastering the steps. “I told her I liked her bright smile, which showed how passionate she is about dancing,” says her mother, Andrea, of Bel Air, Maryland. “And I said, ‘You really give your all.’ That helped her stick with it.”
    .
  4. Focus on the feat. Young kids have a hard time distinguishing between who they are and what they do. So instead of commending your child (“You were good in the car”), praise the action (“You were very calm and quiet on the trip”). This helps toddlers and preschoolers understand the behavior that earned them a compliment.
    .
  5. Point out the positives. It’s easy to fall into the pattern of pointing out your child’s mistakes while overlooking his little successes, says Hartley-Brewer. But when you make an extra effort to praise your child’s achievements and good behavior, you’ll help reinforce them. When Ginny Speirs notices that her children, Ben, 5, and Siena, 8, are being kind to a younger child, she lets them know it. “Telling them that they should be proud of themselves inspires them to do the same thing again,” says the mom from Montecito, California.
    .
  6. Don’t brag. Overdoing praise in public (“Isn’t Jimmy the best speller you’ve ever seen?” or “My 4-year-old already knows how to count to 20 and to read”) isn’t just annoying to other parents — it also puts a lot of pressure on your child to perform. “This is counterproductive praising,” says Edward Christophersen, PhD, clinical child psychologist at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. “It can embarrass your child, and it cancels out the learning benefit of praise.”
    .
  7. Share his achievements with your spouse. While you shouldn’t boast about your child in front of your friends, there’s no need to hold back when you’re at home. In fact, making your spouse aware of your child’s achievement can be good for him, says Lawrence Balter, PhD, professor of applied psychology at New York University, in New York City. Just try not to say it in front of your other kids, so they don’t feel slighted. “When my 5-year-old son, Jacques, does something noteworthy, I tell his mother about it in front of him,” says Todd Nissen, of Washington, D.C. One day when Jacques was sniffling, Nissen handed Jacques a tissue and told his wife, “He blew his nose all by himself yesterday.” Right on cue, Jacques said, “Yeah, watch me,” and demonstrated his new skill.
    .
  8. Tell the truth. Even young kids can see right through false praise. Your best strategy is to be honest — and diplomatic — when commenting on your child’s ability. “If she’s learning to dive and does an awkward belly flop, don’t say, ‘What a beautiful dive,'” says Miller Shivers, PhD, clinical child psychologist at Children’s Memorial Hospital, in Chicago. A better script: “I see you’re working on your diving.” By not defining the action as good or bad, you’re being truthful — while letting your child know she has your attention.
    .
  9. Use body language. Nonverbal cues are a great way to express your approval. “When my face lights up with a grin or I high-five my 4-year-old twins for cleaning their room, they know how I feel about their accomplishment,” says Daphne Butler, of Nashville. A smile or a hug can also be less distracting than words. “If you say, ‘You’re reading so well,’ your child will stop to look up at you,” says Dr. Christophersen. “But if you give him a gentle rub on the back, he’ll get the message that you’re proud of him and keep reading.”
    .
  10. Avoid sarcasm. Don’t poison praise with snarky comments (“Who would have guessed you’d finish an entire meal without staining your clothes?” or “Finally, you learned to ride a bike without training wheels”). Children may not get your attempt at humor, and pointing out past failings is really a form of criticism. Simply celebrate the event (“How does it feel to eat neatly, like a big boy?” or “I’ll bet you can’t wait to show your friends that you can ride a bike”). “Kids just need to know what it is they’re doing right,” says Hartley-Brewer.

Rephrase Your Praise

Toddlers

Instead of saying: “You were a good boy.”

Say: “You shared nicely with your friend.”

Preschoolers

Instead of saying: “You cleaned up your toys.”

Say: “I noticed that you put away your blocks without being asked.”

Big Kids

Instead of saying: “I love your handwriting!”

Say: “It must feel good to be able to write your thank-you notes so neatly.”

Any Child

Instead of saying: “I’m proud of you.”

Say: “You must feel proud of yourself.”
