Ultimately, the reason why love and compassion bring us the greatest happiness is simply that our nature cherishes them above all else. The need for love lies at the very foundation of Human existence. It results from the profound interdependence we all share with one another. However capable and skillful an individual may be, left alone he or she will not survive. However vigorous and independent one may feel during the most prosperous periods of life, when one is sick or very young or very old, one must depend on the support of others.

Interdependence, of course, is a fundamental law of nature. Not only higher forms of life, but also many of the smallest insects are social beings who, without any religion, law, or education, survive by mutual cooperation based on an innate recognition of their interconnectedness. The most subtle level of material phenomena is also governed by interdependence. In fact, all phenomena – be they from the oceans, the clouds, or the forests that surround us – arise in dependence upon subtle patterns of energy. Without their proper interaction, they dissolve and decay.

It is because our own human existence is so dependent on the help of others that our need for love lies at the very foundation of our existence. Therefore, we need a genuine sense of responsibility and a sincere concern for the welfare of others.

We have to consider what we human beings really are. We are not like machine – made objects. If we were merely mechanical entities, then machines themselves could alleviate all of our suffering and fulfill our needs. However, since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. Instead, we should consider our origins and nature to discover who we are and what it is we require.

The expression of Love is also very important at the time of birth. Since the very first thing we do is suck milk from our mothers’ breast, we naturally feel close to her, and she must feel love for us in order to feed us properly; if she feels anger or resentment, her milk may not flow freely. Then there is the critical period of brain development from the time of birth up to at least the age of three or four, during which time loving physical contact is the single most important factor for the normal growth of the child. If the child is not held, hugged, cuddled, or loved, its development will be impaired and its brain will not mature properly.

As children grow older and enter school, their need for support must be met by their teachers. If a teacher not only imparts academic education, but also assumes responsibility for preparing students for life, his or her pupils will feel trust and respect, and what has been taught will leave an indelible impression on their minds. On the other hand, that which is taught by a teacher who does not show true concern for his or her students’ overall well-being will not be retained for long.

Nowadays, many children grow up in unhappy homes. If they do not receive proper affection, in later life they will rarely love their parents and, not infrequently, will find it hard to love others. This is very sad.

In the end, since a child cannot survive without the care of others, love is its most important nourishment.

The happiness of childhood, the allaying of the child’s many fears, and the healthy development of its self-confidence all depend directly upon Love.

Even when we engage in ordinary conversation in everyday life, if someone speaks with human feeling, we enjoy listening and respond accordingly; the whole conversation becomes interesting, however unimportant the topic may be. On the other hand, if a person speaks coldly or harshly, we feel uneasy and wish for a quick end to the interaction. From the least to the most important event, the affection and respect of others are vital for our Happiness.

Recently I met a group of scientists in America who said that the rate of mental illness in their country was quite high – around 12 percent of the population. It became clear during our discussion that the main cause of depression was not a lack of material necessities, but a deprivation of the affection of others. So, as you can see from everything I have written so far, whether or not we are consciously aware of it, from the day we are born the need for human affection is in our very blood. Even if the affection comes from an animal or someone we would normally consider an enemy, both children and adults will naturally gravitate toward it.

I believe that no one is born free of the need for Love. And this demonstrates that, although some modern schools of thought seek to do so, human beings cannot be defined as solely physical. No material object – however beautiful or valuable – can make us feel Loved, because our deeper identity and true character lie in the subjective nature of the mind.

Love
is just a state
of Mind,
but

My eldest son just recently left his job because he was terribly unhappy and unfulfilled. Since he has a family to support — three of my grandchildren and a wife — it felt to most of the family that leaving a well-paid job was professional suicide.

A Rough Go
My son had a rough go of it for the last several years. One of those vulture capitalists engineered a takeover and he lost his company of 11 years. For the last year and a half he was a CFO of a company that owned properties and franchises. He was unhappy about its lackluster attempts to expand and reach it’s full potential. My son wanted to add value to the business, but he wasn’t making inroads.

For several years, my son has been consulting with a therapist who specializes in setting professional goals. She guides a client toward freeing up your mind space and developing an open mindset in regard to achieving optimal happiness .

Freeing Up Space In Your Mind
The concept of freeing up space in your mind might seem uncomfortable at first because its takes you outside your comfort zone. To some, free mind space represents confusion, doubt and fear. To others, free mind space represents possibilities and opportunities — the world is your oyster.

As my son’s therapist suggested, no mind can be free in a state of anger and disappointment. Once free of the negativity that occupies more space in your mind than you realize, you will be able to consciously free up your thoughts and desires. Space can set free the unlimited power within you for personal and professional growth. Space will also give you focused awareness about what the unconscious mind is identifying as important.

Here are five suggestions that will free up space in your mind and alter the trajectory of your life’s journey:

1. Down Time Is Up Time
I have always held the idea that when I was not working, there was a reason for it. I call it fallow time — time to regroup and contemplate whatever was on my mind and feel whatever I wanted to feel. I thought of the farmers who planted crops for several years in one field and then let that field go fallow for several years while nature replenished the soil. The purpose of down time is to grow in ways you never thought possible. From the end of November to February, my son has energized his professional and personal space through a huge networking effort, created another business, became energized by a business he already owned, and altered his perception of what makes him happy in work and in life.

2. Stop Being the Judger
We have a saying in our family about those who judge others and situations we know nothing about: Here come the “judgers.” We tell each other to “get over yourself.” Over a lifetime you collect ideas from parents, society, friends, history, teachers, ministers, the media and the Internet. The world is full of opinions, and they are just that — opinions. Other people’s beliefs are not yours. Free your mind to decide what adds value to your life, what makes you happy and what code of ethics you must follow to live a fulfilling life. Don’t live in another person’s head.

3. Learn to Meditate
One of the best ways to create space in your mind, to think freely and with conscious awareness — is to clear the mind and come into a relaxed physical and mental state. This is called meditation. You clear out the mind clutter, dial down stress, manage overwhelming feelings, and energize your environment. Try not to create or invent anything in meditation. Quieting the mind brings mind, body and spirit into balance. Personal empowerment will be the result.

4. Practice Silence
Recently, I have felt absolutely no need to turn on the radio or television or even listen to music or the news. Perhaps it’s because I’m adjusting to a new place: I just moved to a new city and live in an apartment that has very little outside noise. For the first time in decades I’m experiencing silence. When I consciously acknowledge the humming of my printer or the ambient sounds in the room, it becomes part of my silent meditation. I’m actually conscious of my thoughts and have a more creative focus. I hadn’t written in two months because of the move and stress; and then, in a glorious moment of silence one afternoon, when my head was clear, the ideas began to flow and writing became as always second nature.

5. Master What Matters To You
You change, you grow, and you often transform yourself from one thing to another. I was an actress, theater director, screenwriter and finally a yoga and meditation teacher. I was focused and passionate about each of the stages of my life and I was happily involved in all my work. But what if you don’t have any one thing that matters to you — one thing that delivers extraordinary results in every area of your life. How do you find that one thing? The answer is to free your mind and create space to breathe new life into your mind, body and spirit. You can never achieve that state of personal freedom if you don’t let your mind be free.

When you free the mind, you are overcoming distractions that get in the way of what matters most to you personally and professionally. Creating open space in your mind will increase your focus and confidence and enhance the quality of your life.

Remembering
Werner Bendorf
.
There are many stories to tell.
And our Children Love to hear them.
Some tell of Hope, survival and salvation,
Some of Love everlasting.

As I stood at grave of a man I deeply admired and Loved, beyond Belief, I paused to reflect upon the meaning of his Life, and mine. He first appeared to me at the tender age of ten. His name, Werner Bendorf, and his Life is forever engraved in my memory and alive in my Heart.

He still lives in my Life, day by day, between every beat of my Heart, he smiles, he laughs, he is vibrant in my memory and still shares his Love.

My Heart continues to beat because of his deep and abiding Love, because the depth of his Compassion was far greater than anything I had ever known.

He became the Father I never knew.
He was a Father to many young Souls,
and a Savior to me.

Now, into the mix of Life and Living, arrived a truly remarkable man, a new Scoutmaster, Werner Bendorf. He was much more remarkable than I ever realized at the time, and was to me, a Gift from God and my personal Savior.

And his Story is both remarkable and unbelievable. And I would Love to share it with you.

“I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness,
it will elude you.
But if you focus on your family,
the needs of others, your work,
meeting new people,
and doing the very best you can,
Happiness will find you.”

In growing up, I thought Life was difficult. But I had no idea what difficult meant. Werner shared with me stories from his Life. Then I knew what the word meant. And I became Truly Grateful for the Blessings bestowed upon me by my precious Mother, Marie, and Werner and Donald Graves, Billy Earl Graves, Bruce and Sid Curry, Marshall Alexander, Richard Fletcher, Lester Kuperman, Roger Carter and Allen Bendorf and so very many others.

In recognizing the seemingly impossible obstacles others have had to overcome to survive, we gain perspective and a depth of appreciation.

Later, when I dry my tears, I will share some of the unbelievable stories Werner told me about surviving the evil of the holocaust. He and his wife hid in the attic of a farm house for over three years. From the floor to the peak of the attic was about 3 & 1/2 feet. And the discomforts only began there. I could not believe they had a baby during this time. But more about their inspiring story of survival later.

My Mother, Marie, and Werner Bendorf, present the Eagle Scout Award to a younger me (age 12).

Remembering Werner always brings my Heart closer to God. The words of John Newton‘s beloved song, “Amazing Grace“ touch each of us with Truth in a Grace of its own. And I now know that “Home” is a place found deeply embedded in my Heart. It is a place where Werner and his family have resided for many years.

And in his Heart, I found something difficult to believe. After all the suffering, the loss of precious Lives and the horror found everywhere, Werner led me to the threshold of something far more powerful than guns and bombs and torture and the pure evil of murderous minds. He opened his wounded Heart to show me his Forgiveness. And I have never been the same since that day filled me with such Amazing Grace.

Reality Check: Is Our Universe Real?

Is the world we perceive truly real?

Perhaps our human senses are deceiving us — maybe existence is an illusion, and reality isn’t real.

The idea that everything we know is merely a construction of our minds is investigated in the episode of the Science Channel program “Through the Wormhole,” hosted by Morgan Freeman.

“What is real?” Freeman asks in the show. “How can we be certain that the Universe around us actually exists? And how can we know that the world we see matches what anyone else experiences?”

Human senses are fallible. What people think they perceive is actually filtered and processed by the brain to construct a useful view of the world. Normally, this filtering is helpful, allowing people to sort out important information from the barrage of data that comes in every minute from their environment.

But this filtering ability can become a weakness, as it often does when we’re watching a magician.

“A good magician will tap into universal brain processes that underlie perception,” said Lawrence Rosenblum, a psychologist at the University of California, Riverside and a magician himself. For instance, a magician often directs the audience’s gaze to one hand while he does something with the other. [Eye Tricks: Gallery of Visual Illusions]

But Rosenblum doesn’t see the human tendency to fall for such misdirection as evidence that all of reality exists only in our minds. “Our perceptual system can be fooled, but I do not take that at all to mean that we’re constructing reality,” he told LiveScience.

All in the mind

As members of society, people create a form of collective reality. “We are all part of a community of minds,” Freeman says in the show.

For example, money, in reality, consists of pieces of paper, yet those papers represent something much more valuable. The pieces of paper have the power of life and death, Freeman says — but they wouldn’t be worth anything if people didn’t believe in their power.

Money is fiction, but it’s useful fiction.

Another fiction humans collectively engage in is optimism. Neuroscientist Tali Sharot of University College London studies “the optimism bias”: people’s tendency to generally overestimate the likelihood of positive events in their lives and underestimate the likelihood of negative ones.

In the show, Sharot does an experiment in which she puts a man in a brain scanner, and asks him to rate the likelihood that negative events, such as lung cancer, will happen to him. Then, he is given the true likelihood.

When the actual risks differ from the man’s estimates, his frontal lobes light up. But the brain area does a better job of reacting to the discrepancy when the reality is more positive than what he guessed, Sharot said.

This shows how humans are somewhat hardwired to be optimistic. That may be because optimism “tends to have a lot of positive outcomes,” Sharot told LiveScience. Optimistic people tend to live longer, healthier, more successful lives, she said, and the act of positive thinking can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. “If you think you’re more likely to get promoted, you’re more likely to put in more effort and work long hours,” Sharot said.

But this slightly distorted view of the world can also be a weakness — a person might continue to smoke because they don’t expect to get lung cancer, for example. Being more realistic is important in some cases, Sharot cautioned.

Physical reality

Physicists look beyond the human mind for external reality, but even that reality isn’t absolute truth. Fundamental reality as scientists understand it is based on quantum mechanics, a realm where all manner of strange things occur. An electron can behave as either a particle or a wave, depending on how one measures it. And scientists can measure either a particle’s position or its momentum at any given time, but never both.

“Quantum mechanics is simply the best theory we’ve ever developed,” theoretical physicist David Tong, of Cambridge University, says in the show. But so much of this reality is by definition unknowable. Another physicist featured in the show, Steven Nahn of MIT, says “I absolutely believe reality is a real thing, but that does not mean we understand it.” Nahn was part of the team of scientists who found evidence in 2012 for the Higgs boson, the particle that gives other particles their mass.

The universe may turn out to have more dimensions than we know about, where fundamental forces behave very differently than how we perceive them. For example, gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces, but in other dimensions, it could be just as strong. “Things would be very different in this hidden reality,” Freeman says. The universe could even be a kind of hologram. The amount of information that can be stored in a region of space is proportional to the region’s surface area, rather than its volume – a property known as the holographic principle. One possible implication is that reality is actually two-dimensional, and the three-dimensional world is merely an illusion, which would explain some of the wackiness of quantum mechanics.

All of these views of the world — those that we perceive in our minds, and those that physicists discover in the universe — are flavors of reality. What humans perceive as reality may be no more than an illusion. But in the end, maybe that doesn’t matter.

Once upon a precious
Time,
there was a Beautiful
Puppy,
so pure and innocent
and Happy.

He would come into 
my World,
and Live in the fantasy
that he created.

He had a hunger
for Love
in his Life,
that nothing could replace.

As the years passed,
his Beautiful reality
slowly etched itself indelibly
into the Hopes and Dreams
of His Friend,
me.

I was given the Blessing
of His precious Being,
that dwelled in the Truth
of His Love.

And
with His Love,
my World was filled
with Beautiful Colors, 
delicate layers not unlike layers of color
in a Masterpiece of a
Divinely Beautiful Sunset.
I was thrust into the Limelight
of Colorful Love.

It was like
Heaven was opened.

I grasped His Dream,
the Beautiful and Loving
Dream
that I Lived in,
with Him.

Dreams

carved His Love
and His Beautiful Presence

What is Spiritual Love?

When you think about the word love you likely imagine a relationship between two individuals.

Spiritual love is something more than the love that two people bond over. Spiritual love is what the entire universe is made of.

It has a different taste to it. There isn’t anyone you can look in the eye and proclaim your love for. It’s an ever-present feeling that once it is seen, never goes away.

Even through the hardest moments in your life, spiritual love is always lingering in the background.

It can be quite difficult to cope with spiritual love. How can something so rich and pure even exist when the world we live in seems chaotic and unfair?

Spiritual love is what we were before birth and what we will be after death. Consciousness awakens from absolute stillness.

As consciousness expands in its new form of life, ego begins to grow. You begin to forget what you were before this life existed.

It’s normal. Life is a journey of the realization of what we once were and still are. There will always be a feeling of disconnection with yourself, life, and the universe if spiritual love isn’t reconnected with.

How do you find your way back to universal spiritual love?

Finding Universal Spiritual Love

How do you perceive the world?

Do you find it unfair and chaotic? Or do you find that there is natural order and peace in every moment?

I do agree, that at times life does seem unfair and good people do suffer. That life can be incredibly overwhelming for us and innocent people are unfairly robbed of their lives every day.

On the other end of the spectrum, spiritual love is working in perfect harmony. Matter cannot be created or destroyed.

You, I and everything in the universe are in a constant state of change. There is no separation between you and I.

The only separation that exists is within the mind. It’s the thought that disconnects you from spiritual love.

Spiritual love is all around us. To deny it is to deny existence. It doesn’t matter if you agree – there is one truth and the bond that holds the universe together is the only truth.

Finding What Already Is

There is no need to “find” the love that connects the universe. You are a part of it. The universe itself is a whole.

Do not confuse yourself in a never ending chase. Love is already here, now. It only takes a moment to realize it.

The first step would be to accept. Accept the reality that we are all inside of. Whether it be good, bad or in-between – accept.

Your acceptance is the key to realizing this ever-present Love. It’s a realization of wholeness, it’s a spiritual awakening.

Let Go

The biggest obstacle between you and spiritual love is your pre-concived notions of what this world is and who you are in it.

We all have an idea of ourselves – who we imagined ourselves to be. When in reality, we can never come close to what we are with thought itself.

What would you be without a thought to describe yourself?

By constant examination of our own thinking, we are able to find truth. Spiritual love is already here and now, without a thought to describe it.

Language does not suffice in describing spiritual love. It will always be parallel to it, never making contact.

Our philosophical minds cannot begin to comprehend the vast emptiness of the universe. That’s why you need to let go of your thoughts, one by one until there is nothing left.

Let Spiritual Love Find You

You will be in a state of constant chase if you don’t let spiritual love find you. The act of attempting to find what is already here only leads to frustration.

The key is to be relaxed and to see the spiritual love that is present. Every moment is encapsulated in the ever-lasting spiritual love that most seek.

You do not need to meditate for years at a time or become a monk. Spiritual love is here and now, waiting to be reconnected with again.

You and your thoughts are the only thing that get in the way.

What is Spiritual Love in Relationships?

Coming into a relationship without spiritual love for yourself and the world leads to disaster.

Without fulfillment from within, relationships are unable to be formed. There will be a void in your heart that you will try to fill.

No one is capable of mending an empty heart. You might feel as though you have found your “soulmate” only to alienate them as jealousy, neediness and overbearingness creep into the picture after the honeymoon phase is over.

If two people meet who have already found their fulfillment from within, they are left with a pure bond. There is no argument between them, both have realized absolute spiritual love on their own.

Both can understand that at any moment, the relationship might fizzle out. They both are in agreement with reality and see the perfect nature in it. They are willing to let what they love go, because they have hearts that have been previously filled.

Most relationships that are formed in today’s world are based upon a give/take relationship. Spiritual love between two is strictly a “give” relationship”.

Instead of each party needing or taking from the other, they only have unlimited love to give back to their relationship.

There would be no jealousy or neediness. Fights would still occur, but there would be a deep understanding between them.

A relationship with spiritual love is a perfect relationship. You start with your own spiritual journey and your lover will be there along the way. They will teach you the lessons you need to learn. And if need be, let go of them too.

You will not find spiritual love through anyone else. You must find it on your own.

Spiritual Love vs Romantic Love

The love you witness on rom-coms and movies is fantasy. We all want to be in a picture-perfect relationship, to be in romantic love, but under all the layers of fantasy are real human beings.

Human beings with problems, with grievances, and different opinions. Not every moment will be a romantic plot in your favorite TV show.

Romantic love as society views it is inherently flawed. Romantic love suggests that there is someone out there, a “soulmate”, that completes your life.

You are already complete. That’s where spiritual love comes in. Spiritual love is absolute, it’s the entire universe. There is no need for someone else to complete your journey as it is already whole.

Spiritual love is a tangible reality unlike romantic love.

We’ve all been there. We assume that this person in front of us was meant to be. And yet over the course of a few weeks/months, the honeymoon period ends. The real person comes to the surface and they weren’t who we thought they were.

It was our own projections of our idea of romantic love that caused this. Our hearts needed to be filled and we let the fantasy persuade us right under our noses.

With spiritual love, you are wiser. You don’t chase relationships for fulfillment. Contentedness is available at every moment, being “alone” doesn’t equate to loneliness.

If love shows up at your front door, then you will gladly embark on a new journey. But with spiritual love in the background, the relationship will be incredibly powerful.

Two full hearts are better than two halves combined.

Don’t Let Up

If you’re having difficulty realizing spiritual love, it is a process. You will go through phases where you will feel entirely full of bliss and then it escapes from you.

There isn’t any reason why this happens. Spiritual love is always here, at times we need to remind ourselves of it. When it is absent, that means that there is spiritual work to be done.

You are a full cup, remember that.

No one else will be able to love you, like you can.
