 Amid our quest for Happiness, our busy schedules can leave us going through the motions and not really enjoying daily life. Happiness, however, does not have to be a complicated or difficult state to achieve or feel. Finding pleasure in simple things every day while taking in our surroundings can help us find moments of simplicity and, ultimately, moments of Happiness. Below are ways to enjoy the simplicity of Happiness.

Smile more

Even though you may not feel like showing your pearly whites, a Smile instantly makes you feel better. Turning up the corners of your lips, even when you don’t feel like smiling, will brighten your mood and remind you of what Happiness is supposed to feel like. Not only will you feel better, but giving someone a smile will make them feel better too, and this smile becomes infectious.

Spend some time alone

Being caught up in work and family commitments can leave you drained and bored. Spending time alone, therefore, is important to your overall mental health. “Me time” gives you time to de-stress, time to re-evaluate your goals and priorities in life and time to regain a zest for Life. Finding simple pleasures while being alone can be as simple as sipping your favorite cup of tea while reading a good book, sketching or taking a walk.

Do something nice for someone

If you’ve ever heard of the concept “pay it forward,” you’ll know that if you were on the receiving end of a good deed, then repaying a good deed by doing a good deed for someone else is a great idea. Whether it’s paying for a stranger’s cup of coffee in the morning lineup or volunteering to help a friend or family member with something they’ve needed help with, doing something nice for someone else may not be completely selfless, but it’s a simple way to feel better. Feeling productive and helpful will make your day as well as someone else’s. So go ahead, pay it forward and hopefully these kind acts will also become infectious.

Keep a happy list

One week, I recorded everything that made me Happy. These things were as simple as good coffee and a good conversation, peanut butter and someone playing with my hair. What I realized is that everything that made me happy was so simple and not materialistic. Try keeping a “Happy list” by recording things that make you Happy throughout your day for a week or two. Aim to record at least two or three things a day, and see what you come up with. Keeping this Happy list handy will remind you of simple ways to be Happy, even on your bad days.

Live in the moment

Corita Kent once wrote, “Life is a succession of moments. To Live each one is to succeed.” This is definitely true when it comes to Happiness. We all worry about the future or are stuck on relationships or problems from the past, but Living in the present moments and fully taking in these moments allow us to enjoy each day as much as possible.

We can find Happiness during whatever overwhelming situations we may be facing by simply taking a deep breath and refocusing our minds on what’s happening around us in a specific moment. This allows us to really feel and sense pleasant things that we may have missed in our busy daily lives.

A New Dimension to a Meaningful Life

Studies suggest that appreciating beauty in the everyday may be just as powerful as a sense of overarching purpose.

When we think about lives filled with meaning, we often focus on people whose grand contributions benefited humanity. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela surely felt they had a worthwhile Life. But how about us ordinary people, toiling away in a typical existence?

Many scholars agree that a subjectively meaningful existence often boils down to three factors: the feeling that one’s life is coherent and “makes sense,” the possession of clear and satisfying long-term goals and the belief that one’s Life matters in the grand scheme of things. Psychologists call these three things coherence, purpose and existential mattering.

But we believe there is another element to consider. Think about the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or imagine the scenery atop a hill after a fresh hike. Sometimes existence delivers us small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating such experiences, these moments may enhance how they view their life. We call this element experiential appreciation. The phenomenon reflects the feeling of a deep connection to events as they transpire and the ability to extract value from that link. It represents the detection of and admiration for Life’s inherent Beauty.

We recently set out to better understand this form of appreciation in a series of studies, published in Nature Human Behaviour, that involved more than 3,000 participants. Across these studies, we were interested in whether experiential appreciation was related to a person’s sense of meaning even when we accounted for the effects of the classic trio of coherence, purpose and existential mattering. If so, experiential appreciation could be a unique contributor to meaningfulness and not simply a product of these other variables.

As an initial test of our idea, during the early stages of the COVID pandemic, we had participants rate their endorsement of different coping strategies to relieve their stress. We found that people who managed stress by focusing on their appreciation for Life’s Beauty also reported experiencing Life as highly meaningful.

In the next study, we asked participants to rate the extent to which they agreed with various statements, such as “I have a great appreciation for the beauty of life” and “I appreciate a wide variety of experiences,” as well as other statements that related to coherence, purpose, existential mattering and a general sense of meaning in life.

Our results showed that the more people indicated that they were “appreciating life” and its many experiences, the more they felt their existence was valuable. In fact, these two elements related strongly to each other even when we controlled for other aspects of a meaningful life. In subsequent studies, we further explored the connection between these concepts. For example, we found that participants asked to recall the most meaningful event of the past week generally reported high experiential appreciation in those moments.

Finally, we conducted a series of experiments in which we gave people specific tasks and, once more, asked them to report how strongly they identified with statements linked to purpose, mattering, et cetera.

In one case, we found that participants who watched an awe-inspiring video, such as the opening sequence of the BBC documentary Planet Earth, reported having a greater sense of experiential appreciation and meaning in life, compared with participants who watched more neutral videos, such as an instructional woodworking video.

Similarly, participants who wrote about a recent experience for which they were grateful had a greater sense of meaning and experiential appreciation afterward when compared with participants who simply wrote about a common place they had visited in the past week.

The results confirmed our original theory: appreciating small things can make Life feel more meaningful. But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented lifestyles fill the day with targets and goals. We are on the go, and we attempt to maximize output both at work and at leisure. This focus on future outcomes makes it all too easy to miss what is happening right now. Yet Life happens in the present moment. We should slow down, let Life surprise us and embrace the significance in the everyday.

As former Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru wrote in 1950, “We live in a wonderful world…. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”

Reality Isn’t What We Think It Is

Newton’s laws were a good start, but quantum mechanics is now providing a mind-boggling glimpse at the building blocks of existence.

For molecules and atoms, it’s perfectly possible to be in two places at once. The field of quantum mechanics describes these very small systems, and shows us how the rules of nature can be vastly different from our everyday experiences.

“[Quantum mechanics] is changing the way we view reality. Today we think of objects as being here or there. In a quantum world, objects can be here and there at the same time. The nature itself of reality is changing in the quantum world.”

Raymond Laflamme, quantum physics researcher and Executive Director of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, explains that we typically think about things being either here or there, but quantum mechanics teaches us that things can be both here and there at the same time.

“The world behaves in certain ways, and since we’ve been born, we’ve been used to trying to understand some behavior of the world – try to control it, try to turn it into technology,” says Laflamme. “When we go to very small systems – the size of atoms, molecules, the kind of fundamental blocks of nature – the rules of nature change.”

This may seem like science fiction, but there are many real world applications of quantum behavior all around you.

Laflamme explains that understanding the special properties of systems at the atomic level allows us not only to predict quantum behavior, but also to control it to create new technologies. The computers we have today store information using bits, and these basic units of information can have one of two values: 0 or 1. By storing information as bits with values of 0 and 1, quantum computers gain speed and capacity.

This opens up the potential to manipulate and control all kinds of devices, from simple thermostats to lasers, making them more sensitive and precise than ever.

“We have a family of technologies which seem to be mind-boggling compared to [the devices] we have today,” adds Laflamme.

“But there is another implication – maybe more profound – it is changing the way that we view reality.”

And today, we are the place where the ideas, the lab experiments, are turning into devices that can reach the market and can affect all of you. And this is happening a lot faster than when we thought.”

Prof. Raymond Laflamme is originally from Québec City, where he studied Physics as an undergraduate at the Université Laval. After surviving Part III of the Mathematical Tripos at the University of Cambridge, he completed his PhD on aspects of general relativity and quantum cosmology in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) under the direction of Stephen Hawking. Prof. Laflamme and his colleague Don Page are responsible for having changed Hawking’s mind on the reversal of the direction of time in a contracting universe (see Hawking’s book, A Brief History of Time). From 1988-1992, Prof. Laflamme held a Killam post-doctoral fellowship at UBC, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Peterhouse College, University of Cambridge. From 1992-2001, Prof. Laflamme worked as a research scientist at Los Alamos Research Laboratory, where his interests shifted from cosmology to quantum computing. Since the mid-1990’s, Prof. Laflamme has developed theoretical approaches to quantum error correction, and has given experimental demonstrations of these techniques. In collaboration with Emmanuel Knill, Prof. Laflamme gave conditions for quantum error correcting codes, and established the fault-tolerance threshold, thereby showing that quantum computing systems could be practically useful. He went on to perform the first experimental demonstration of quantum error correction. With colleagues, he has developed a blueprint for a quantum information processor using linear optics, and devised and implemented new methods to make quantum information robust against corruption in both cryptographic and computational settings. In 2001, Laflamme returned to Canada as the founding Director of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), and as a founding member of the Perimeter Institute For Theoretical Physics. Prof. Laflamme was the Scientific Director of QuantumWorks (2000-2011), and has been Director of the Quantum Information Program at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) since 2003, and a CIFAR Fellow since 2001. Prof. Laflamme holds the Canada Research Chair in Quantum Information, and is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo. Prof. Laflamme’s group holds the world record for the largest number of quantum bits manipulated using universal control.

Processed meat ‘linked to breast cancer’

Regularly eating foods like bacon and sausages may raise the risk of breast cancer, according to researchers.

A review of studies found women who ate high levels of processed meat had a 9% increased risk of the cancer compared with those who ate little of it.

The study backs up previous findings of the World Health Organization, which says processed meats cause cancer.

Experts recommend caution about the findings and say the actual risk for individual women is “very small”.

How reliable are the findings?

This review, which included data on more than a million women, shows a link between processed meat consumption and breast cancer risk, but it’s not clear if the food is actually causing this.

There are also other pitfalls to consider.

The 15 studies used in the analysis had different definitions of the highest consumptions.

For example, one of the UK studies in the review classed high consumption as more than 9g a day – the equivalent of just two or three rashers a week – while in others it was much higher.

The researchers in the majority of these studies noted what people said they ate and followed them up to see which of them developed breast cancer.

But the problem with this is that people who eat different amounts of processed meat may also have other behaviors that might explain the differences in breast cancer risk, such as being more or less healthy in other ways.

What is the risk?

In the UK about 14 out of every 100 women will get breast cancer at some point in their lives.

That means a 9% increase in risk in this population would be expected to translate into roughly one extra case of cancer in every 100 women.

Cancer Research UK estimates that about 23% of breast cancers are preventable.

It estimates that about 8% of cases are caused by being overweight and obese and another 8% by alcohol.

Authors of this study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, say the link they found is only for processed meat, not red meat.

The WHO lists processed meat as carcinogenic, primarily because of evidence linking it to a raised risk of bowel cancer, while it says red meat is “probably carcinogenic”.

What is processed meat?

Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste, usually by smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives to meat.

This includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham.

There are different theories for why it may raise the risk of cancer, including that curing salt may react with protein in the meat to make it carcinogenic.

So should we cut out processed meat?

Lead author Dr Maryam Farvid, of the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in the US, recommends cutting down on the meat rather than eliminating it.

Currently, the NHS recommends eating no more than 70g of red and processed meat a day.

Dr Gunter Kuhnle, associate professor in nutrition and health at the University of Reading, who was not involved in the study, said it was “questionable” whether people should lower their red and processed meat consumption on the back of this study.

He said the actual risk posed by processed meats was “very small” for the individual and more relevant on a population-wide level.

However, he said the study’s findings should be followed up to investigate the links between processed meat and cancer and see whether the associated risk could be reduced, for example through new food production methods.
