Dangers of Exposure
to Light at Night

Sleeping while exposed to light at night
causes a dramatic drop in blood melatonin levels,
setting the stage for growth and proliferation
of breast cancer cells.
The increased breast cancer risk
in female night shift workers
has been postulated to result from
the suppression of pineal melatonin production by
exposure to LIGHT at night.

Tumor growth response to exposure to light
during darkness
is intensity dependent and the Human nocturnal,
circadian melatonin signal
inhibits human breast cancer growth.
This effect is extinguished
by short-term ocular exposure to bright,
white light at night.

An interesting study in Cancer Research
(read more)
provides new information that
might partly explain why this is.

This study provides evidence
that may partly explain why breast cancer
is five times more common (500 %)
in industrialized nations
compared to less developed countries.
It may also explain why visually challenged people
have lower rates of cancer than people
who have no problems with vision.

don’t be in the dark
about this.
Well, actually,
you do need to be

 Plants that can purify the air in your home

Harmful pollutants, which are not confined to outdoor spaces, can be found in homes and offices. However, plants can help to improve indoor air quality and clean the air that you and your family breathe.

As reported in a clean air study by NASA, plants can play a major role in removal of organic chemicals from indoor air.

Plants absorb particles from the air at the same time that they take in carbon dioxide, which is then processed into oxygen through photosynthesis.

Stephanie Huckestein, instructor of indoor plants at the Hahn Horticulture Garden of Virginia Tech, said plants remove pollutants from the air by absorbing gases through the pores on their leaves.

Many of the plants proven to clean the air
can be grown indoors, even with limited sunshine.
Huckestien said all plants need light to photosynthesize,
but many are tolerant of lower light levels.
Photosynthesis is the process through which plants
use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water
into food.

The next time you lift a glass or a can filled with so much regret, so much unbearable pain, so much loss of life and precious love, say a prayer for the now nameless millions who have gone before you and left behind a landscape that resembles nothing but misery and death.

Please remember that as you wander further and further down into this valley of the shadow of death, you are taking your loved ones with you. Alcoholism is not a singular disease. It is always accompanied by other victims. It is a social disorder on a magnitude and scale that defies definition. It envelopes and destroys entire families, your other loved ones and friends, and frequently, many others that were simply going down the highway at the same time. Each year the number is in the millions. But the numbers do not matter as much as you do. They are insignificant to those who love you, if you drown in the sea of apathy and alcohol.

The consumption of alcohol frequently leads to a portrait drawn of the loneliest place on earth, a graveyard. And the flowers, yes, those flowers, are not what they seem. They are watered by the tears of the deeply loved and lost. They never blossom in the warm sunlight of tomorrow. They died. Their lives were stolen, along with all the precious dreams.

the illusion of time,
time immeasurable,

ADHD diets
haven’t been researched a lot. Data is limited and results are mixed. Many health experts, though, think that what you eat and drink may play a role in helping symptoms.

One expert, Richard Sogn, MD, says that whatever is good for the brain is likely to be good for ADHD. You may want to eat:

A high-protein diet. Beans, cheese, eggs, meat, and nuts can be good sources of protein. Eat these kinds of foods in the morning and for after-school snacks. It may help improve concentration.

Fewer simple carbohydrates. Cut down on how many of these you eat: candy, corn syrup, honey, sugar, products made from white flour, white rice, and potatoes without the skins.

More complex carbohydrates. These are the good guys. Load up on vegetables and some fruits, including oranges, tangerines, pears, grapefruit, apples, and kiwi. Eat this type of food in the evening and it may help you sleep.

More omega-3 fatty acids. You can find these in tuna, salmon, and other cold-water white fish. Walnuts, Brazil nuts, and olive and canola oil are other foods with these in them. You could also take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement. The FDA approved an omega compound called Vayarin as part of an ADHD management strategy.
