A World Without Cancer:
Is Prevention the Cure?

In the following interview, Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo, author of the book     A World Without Cancer, discusses the importance of cancer prevention with Motley Fool health care analyst Max Macaluso.

Macaluso: Dr. Cuomo is the author of the new book, A World Without Cancer, and she’s also the daughter of our former Governor Cuomo, and the sister of our current Governor Cuomo.

It’s been about 40 years – actually more than 40 years – since 1971, when the war on cancer was declared by President Richard Nixon. In that time, we’ve spent over $90 billion on cancer research, and yet we are still seeing cancer incidence rates rise.

We haven’t come as far as you’d think we should have, for that amount of time and money spent, so I said to myself, with all the horrific effects of cancer on the lives of my patients, friends, and family, it was time to delve into the subject and give it a fresh perspective.

Macaluso: In your book you talk a lot about the misconceptions of cancer prevention. What do you think the top misconception is today?

Cuomo: I think most people, even people who are quite knowledgeable, think that cancer is an inevitability. “No matter what I do, I’m going to get cancer. Either I’ll inherit it, or I’ll grow old enough and I’ll get cancer just because I’ve grown old.”

That’s clearly not the case. We know that over 50% of all cancers are preventable. Attention to diet, exercise, limiting alcohol, ending smoking, protecting our skin from the sun, and taking vitamin D    all contribute to a cancer-free life and the environmental toxins that   are in our midst can be eliminated, or at least limited so that they   don’t raise our risk of cancer.

Macaluso: What are some of the specific things we’re not paying enough attention to when it comes to prevention? Let’s start with diet.

Cuomo: OK, diet. You know the old expression, “You are what you eat.” To a large extent, that’s very true. A plant-based diet is what nearly all the experts say is not only the healthiest in terms of preventing heart disease and diabetes, but also reducing our risk for cancer.

If you look at your plate, your daily plate, two-thirds of it should be fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains like brown rice or quinoa, or even a whole grain pasta – and then a very small amount of lean protein like fish or chicken, and a minimal amount of red meat. That is the cancer prevention diet, but it also, as I say, decreases your risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Limiting alcohol – that means you really can’t afford to go out once a week and binge. They say no more than one drink a day of alcohol – that includes wine – for a woman and no more than two for a man, and it may be even less than that, but certainly you want to watch your alcohol intake.

Macaluso: I can tell you, after reading your book I definitely modified my diet. I’m drinking more green tea and a lot more vegetables.

1000+ Beautiful Background Photos · Pexels · Free Stock Photos

Cuomo: Excellent. Green tea has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.

Macaluso: Let’s shift the discussion from diet to environmental factors.

Cuomo: Yes, environment; very important. In fact, the United Nations just issued a report, that the World Health Organization was involved in as well, in which it said that there are so many of the so-called “endocrine disrupting chemicals,” such as BPA, which are in our plastic water bottles, other beverages, also food containers, the lining of the cans of food, soup — a can of soup, a can of beans — etc. Even a cashier receipt can have BPA.

Parabens – parabens are in everything from facial wash to shampoo, toothpaste – these are endocrine-disrupting chemicals. What does that mean?

That means they modify the development of hormones in our body. They affect our endocrine system, which has been linked to cancers of the breast, prostate, thyroid, and others. Also linked to obesity and diabetes, and they even drew a link to autism.

For all those reasons we want to rid our products, our personal care products at the very least, of these harmful chemicals, so there is good news on that note.

Macaluso: In your book, you talk a lot about BPAs and all the things in consumer packaging. I understand that Johnson & Johnson is leading the charge in making a commitment to rid their products of these chemicals. Can you speak a little bit about that?

Cuomo: Yes. I applaud Johnson & Johnson. They are the first major consumer products company in the United States to voluntarily commit to removing all harmful chemicals from their personal care products.

I would like to see other major companies, like Procter & Gamble and Colgate and L’Oreal follow the good example of Johnson & Johnson. Why should consumers be at risk for washing their face or brushing their teeth?

Macaluso: Excellent point. Going along with that, are there any other companies focused on organic products or specific foods,  that you might applaud?

Cuomo: Yes. I am happy to share with you, in terms of being BPA-free in all of their food packaging materials, the Hain Celestial Group. First of all, they’re the market leader in organic products, I’ve learned, and they include products such as Arrowhead Mills, Health Valley, Earth’s Best baby food, Walnut Acres juices, DeBoles pasta, Imagine sauces and soups.

They have made a commitment to BPA-free in all of their food packaging, cans, etc., and they also are very conscious in terms of sustainability for their packaging materials, so big applause for Hain Celestial Group.

Also, Whole Foods 365 brands, many of their brands are BPA-free, Trader Joe’s, and Eden Foods are some that come to mind.

Macaluso: Is there anything that consumers can do, or do we just have to wait for these companies to change their practices?

Cuomo: What you can do as an educated consumer is to read the labels. Certainly, if you don’t see “BPA free,” you have to question, “Does this packaging material contain BPA?”

Girl Enjoying Beautiful Scenery Stock Photo - Download ...

In terms of your personal care products, read the labels. If you see anything with “paraben” in it – that means methylparaben, butylparaben – anything that has that phrase, paraben,” avoid it completely. Also another word, difficult to pronounce, phthalates, another endocrine disruptor.

Basically, Max, anything you can’t pronounce you would be wise to stay away from it.

Macaluso: Yeah, I think that’s a good rule of thumb. Let’s talk a little bit about obesity. I think a lot of people might not realize that obesity is linked to certain types of cancers.

Cuomo: Yes. Obesity is linked to quite a few cancers. Scientists have pointed to the fact that breast cancer and colon cancer are definitely linked to obesity, but there are many other cancers that are as well.

What do we want to do? How do we avoid this epidemic? Do you realize, in the past 30 years the rate of obesity among children has tripled, and it has doubled for adults? Everyone agrees we have an epidemic. What do we do about it?

It’s all about education, isn’t it? We have to start with our very youngest children, teaching them what is a healthful diet. It’s not a bag of chips at every meal. It’s not a can of soda at every meal. If children don’t have the tools, the strategies, how can we expect them to eat healthfully?

Often times, what children learn in school in terms of vegetables and a plant-based diet, they will take home and they will be the teachers for their parents and caregivers. Isn’t that a wonderful thing?

I really feel education is the key here.

Macaluso: Once again, focused more on prevention than treatments.

Cuomo: Prevention is so important.

Macaluso: Let’s talk about tobacco products a little bit. Not all smokers get lung cancer, but it is a major risk factor.

Cuomo: Tobacco is a scourge and as you say, certainly we’ve proven that it causes lung cancer but it causes many other cancers as well; cancers of the digestive tract, even pancreas and bladder, have been linked to smoking.

What do we do? Well, years ago there was something called the Master Settlement Agreement, where all of the tobacco companies agreed to contribute billions of dollars to a fund that would later be given to the states with the intention that those funds be used for tobacco cessation programs and other tobacco elimination programs.

However, as I understand it the law is that the money goes to the states, but the states are not compelled to use it for that purpose. In these economically trying times, states are using it for infrastructure, they’re using it for a lot of other reasons.

We have to get back to preserving that money for tobacco cessation. Right now we have an increasing trend in smoking among adolescents, and among people of low education and low income.

Again, the burden of their illnesses is going to impact all of us. It doesn’t only impact the person who is going to be unfortunate enough to get lung cancer; it affects our health care costs, and we all absorb that, so it behooves all of us to make sure those funds are used properly.

Macaluso: Let’s shift the conversation from prevention to treatment. Your book does talk about some major successes in medicine, in the treatment of cancer. One in particular is Novartis’ Gleevec. This is a treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia.

What I was wondering, reading your book, was why haven’t we been able to replicate the success of Gleevec and chronic myeloid leukemia with other types of cancer, namely solid tumors?

Cuomo: That’s a very astute question. Chronic myeloid or myelogenous leukemia, CML, is based on a single genetic mutation. This terrible disease is actually a very simple disease, unlike breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer – these more common cancers – which are several orders of magnitude more complicated than that.

Therefore, Gleevec can attack CML and effectively cure it because it’s a very simple disease. Breast, prostate, lung cancer, are all much more complicated and it’s not as easy to treat them with a single chemotherapeutic agent or a monoclonal antibody, and that’s what Gleevec is.

Cuomo: prevention is the most effective strategy we have for ridding ourselves of cancer, and yet we devote so little time and attention to it.

My agenda is not to draw attention away from treatment. Again, there will always be patients who require treatment, and they should have it. What I am saying is that we have the intellectual resources and the financial capability to achieve both.

The National Cancer Prevention Institute would do just that. It would be based on a collaborative focused effort divided into teams, each team addressing a specific cancer type, and it would draw from many disciplines.

It would be a trans-disciplinary approach, including epidemiology, cancer biology, microbiology, immunology, engineering, pharmaceuticals, even urban planning; everything you need to decrease cancer incidence.

I don’t see that happening right now, and a lot of people that have been studying this for a long time feel it is time now to do this kind of approach, the way we did for the moonshot and for the Human Genome Project, both of which took a collaborative effort which had team science at its core. That’s what we should use for the prevention of cancer.

Macaluso: Dr. Cuomo, recently there was an Institute of Medicine report that addressed cancer care. Can you speak a little bit about that?

Cuomo: Yes. I was very pleased to see some experts in the country, such as Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Dr. Peter Bach, contribute to this workshop last October. They just issued a report from the Institute of Medicine addressing the question, “How do we contain cancer costs and what can we be doing better?”

Some of the key points were, what should a cancer therapy do? How do we assess its effectiveness and its value?

Well, it should increase our overall survival. It should increase the patient’s survival. It should increase the patient’s quality of life, while at the same time it should have very few side effects – certainly not life-threatening side effects or side effects that degrade that quality of life – and it should contain costs. It should not be an unsustainable cost.

I thought that was a very good way of focusing attention on the question of how do we end the spiral of cancer care cost in America.

Macaluso: Thank you very much. Once again, Dr. Margaret Cuomo, author of the book A World Without Cancer.

Worst Cancer-Causing Foods

Over the last several decades, certain foods have been vilified as being potentially carcinogenic, or capable of causing cancer. So which ones are the biggest culprits? And how can you eat to prevent cancer or reduce the chances of a recurrence if you’ve been diagnosed?

The list of potentially cancer-causing foods includes:

Red and processed meat.

— Sugar.

— Alcohol.

— Processed and packaged foods.

Red and Processed Meat

For the carnivores among us, it’s probably tough to hear the news that red meat and processed meat are associated with a higher risk of certain types of cancer. “Red meat is defined as beef, veal, pork, lamb and goat,” says Cathy Leman, a dietitian, personal trainer, nutrition therapist, speaker, writer and breast cancer survivor based in Chicago.

“Processed meat refers to meat that has been salted, cured, fermented, smoked or other processes that enhance flavor or improve preservation,” she adds. Examples include hot dogs, luncheon meats, ham and bacon.

Jeannette Schenk, senior staff scientist in the cancer prevention program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, says “There have been many epidemiological studies that have reported an association with high intakes of processed meat and red meat with an increase in cancer incidence and mortality.”

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, a high intake of red meat is defined as more than three servings per week. A single serving of red meat is about 3 to 4 ounces — or one small hamburger, steak or a medium-sized pork chop. Your total weekly consumption, the AICR reports, should be under 350 to 500 grams (about 12 to 18 ounces cooked) each week.

The cancer risk associated with processed meat products is even higher. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, classifies processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning that like other Group 1 carcinogens — tobacco, UV radiation and alcohol — research has proven that processed meat can cause cancer in humans. Eating just 50 grams of processed meat each day, the IARC reports, can elevate cancer risk by 18%. Four strips of bacon or one hot dog contains about 50 grams of processed meat.

[50+] Landscape Screensavers and Wallpaper on WallpaperSafari

Kailey Proctor, an oncology dietitian with the Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California, emphasizes, though, that the observed connection between meat and cancer “is an association, not a causation,” meaning that we don’t know for sure whether consumption of red meat is causing the cancer directly. Nevertheless, she notes that processed meat products “are processed foods” that should be consumed in moderation, aiming for one serving per week or less.

Why these meats appear to elevate cancer risk, particularly colorectal cancer, is believed to be because red meats and processed meats contain mutagens and carcinogens. Mutagens change genetic information by altering DNA, and carcinogens are cancer-causing agents.

When meat is cooked at high temperatures or grilled, amino acids in the meat interact with the heat to form carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. “Those have been linked with cancer risk,” Schenk says.

With processed meats, the cancer risk appears to be related to the way the meat is preserved and cooked. Specifically, the addition of preservatives called nitrates and nitrites may elevate cancer risk. Similarly, smoking meats can also create carcinogenic compounds, Schenk says.

[See: The Best Plant-Based Diets.]

Sugar

Sugar is also implicated in the development and progression of certain kinds of cancer. In the early 20th century, a German biochemist named Otto Warburg observed that cancer cells often rely on sugar to fuel their prolific growth. Called the Warburg effect, this process suggests that starving the body of sugar and carbohydrates that can be converted to sugar could theoretically starve cancer cells.

As a result, the ketogenic diet, which reduces carbohydrate intake to 10% or less of calories consumed and increases fat consumption to 70% or more, has been suggested as a way to slow the spread of cancer.

The effectiveness of the keto diet to prevent or slow cancer hasn’t been fully proven, but an association between sugar and cancer has been established. For this reason, “any food which has a very high glycemic index” can increase your risk of cancer and should be consumed in moderation, says Dr. Adil Akhtar, associate professor in the department of medical oncology and hematology at Oakland University-William Beaumont School of Medicine and director of Inpatient Clinical Operations at Karmanos-McLaren Oakland Cancer Center in Michigan.

43 Stunning Landscape Photos

A food’s glycemic index is “defined by the rate at which a food when it’s digested will raise the level of sugar in the blood,” Akhtar explains. Sugary foods, such as soda and candy, have a high glycemic index.

Some experts say that if you’re concerned about cancer, you should eliminate all refined sugar from your diet because many types of cancer cells use sugar as their primary fuel. In fact, some diagnostic tests for cancer use radioactive glucose to pinpoint tumors on PET scans because most cancer cells have such an affinity for sugar that they suck up glucose molecules faster than noncancerous cells can, thus showing themselves on the scan.

[CLICK TO READ: Life Without Sugar: One Woman’s Success Story.]

Alcohol

Alcohol is actually a type of sugar, so it’s also on the list of foods that can increase your risk of cancer. “Alcohol is an established risk factor for mouth, pharynx, esophageal, liver, colorectal, breast and pancreatic cancer,” Schenk says.

Exactly how alcohol increases risk is not clearly understood, but “it’s possibly related to DNA damage” incurred by the cells after exposure to alcohol, Schenk says.

“In addition, it could be an indirect contributor because calories from alcohol contribute to weight gain.” Alcoholic beverages contribute a lot of excess calories that offer no nutritional benefits, so “it’s one of those added foods that we need to be limiting,” she says.

The federal government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 states that if you don’t drink, don’t start. It also recommends that moderating intake is an important way to curb cancer risk in people who do choose to consume alcoholic beverages.

Moderate alcoholic drinking is defined as one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 8 to 9 ounces of malt liquor, 5 ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.

In her opinion, Leman says that “for cancer prevention, it’s best not to drink alcohol.

Processed and Packaged Foods

Akhtar says certain processed foods can also raise your risk of developing cancer. “Things like microwaved popcorn have compounds that are linked with cancer.” The environmental organization Environmental Working Group raised the alarm about a chemical called PFOA that was used to coat the inside of popcorn bags as a likely carcinogen, prompting the FDA to ban its use in food packaging in 2006.

However, a subsequent EWG investigation suggested that the replacement chemicals (needed to prevent oils in the bag from soaking through the paper) are also potentially carcinogenic and likely contain perfluorinated chemicals. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports that these chemicals, known as PFCs, may increase the risk of cancer.

Other ultra-processed foods, such as packaged baked goods and snacks, fizzy drinks, sugary cereals, ready meals and reconstituted meat products, have also been linked with an increased risk of certain types of cancer, according to a 2018 study in the British Medical Journal.

The study, which included 104,980 healthy French adults, found that a 10% increase in the proportion of ultra-processed foods in the diet was associated with increases of 12% in the risk of overall cancer and 11% in the risk of breast cancer. No significant association was found for prostate and colorectal cancers.

Ultra-processed food products also tend to be higher in calories, salt, sugar and saturated fats, all of which may contribute to obesity, which is a known risk factor for cancer.

Even seemingly healthy foods, such as farmed salmon, may contain chemicals that might increase cancer risk. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs as probably carcinogenic in humans. This class of chemicals were manufactured from 1929 until they were banned in 1979, but they linger still in the environment. Whether the levels of these chemicals, which enter the food chain from industrial and hazardous waste sites and become concentrated in the feed given to farmed fish, are high enough to cause cancer is still being debated.

If you’re concerned about this risk, Harvard Health suggests removing the skin of the salmon and the fat directly underneath it before cooking, as that’s where the chemicals are most concentrated. Allowing the fat to drain off by grilling, baking or broiling can also reduce risk. Studies have also suggested that lower levels of these chemicals have been identified in fish farmed in Chile and Washington State, so check where your fish is coming from.

How Should I Eat to Avoid Cancer?

While some foods have been associated with an increased risk of certain kinds of cancer, other foods are believed to help reduce your risk. This is where Yael Vodovotz, director of the center for advanced functional foods and entrepreneurship at the Ohio State University in Columbus, is focusing her research efforts.

“Our lab is focusing on foods for prevention,” she says, and they’re investigating the bioactive compounds in food that “potentially can work together for cancer prevention.” (Bioactive means the compound has an effect on cells or a living organism and is used to describe vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other components of food.) In addition, they’re looking to formulate foods or food combinations that can offer a bioactive effect.

In that work, berries have been one brightly colored bright spot in terms of the benefits they can provide. “We’ve studied black raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. A lot of berries have combinations of bioactive properties.”

Soy is another food they’re studying, and while there has been some concern that soy might elevate risk of breast cancer in some people, some studies have shown it could be protective against other kinds of cancer. Look for soy to remain part of the food-and-cancer conversation for some time to come.

Vodovotz also says that green tea, tomatoes, grapefruit and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli have bioactive compounds that are under investigation for their cancer-fighting properties too.

“The idea is to incorporate the whole foods,” she says, instead of extracting a single compound. And finding the optimal combination of foods that give the full balance of cancer-fighting phytochemicals and nutrients is still a work in progress.

Vodovotz also notes that eating too much of any food can have negative consequences. “Foods are all made of chemicals, and if you take in way, way, way too much for a prolonged time, it’s going to be a problem.”

Eat a Balanced Diet

While her work continues determining which compounds can help and which may hurt in the quest to remain cancer-free, Vodovotz says, you can get a jump start by eating a balanced diet. “I’m very big on the USDA’s (U.S. Department of Agriculture) MyPlate plan,” which advocates incorporating lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fiber and lean and plant-based proteins. “I do believe there’s an intimate link between cancer prevention and diet.”

Akhtar agrees, adding that there’s not one specific diet that will solve the cancer question, but he likes the Mediterranean diet for its balance of nutrients, low levels of sugar and focus on whole foods.

beautiful nature photos - Beautiful Nature

“Eat a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and limits carbohydrates and sugars, he says. “Eat smaller portions of lean meat and healthy fats included in fish, nuts and olives. If you look at the list of different diets, all the healthy diets will have these basic components with a little bit of modifications.”

The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends a mostly plant-based diet for cancer prevention, Proctor says. “Their ‘New American Plate’ model suggests having two-thirds of your plate plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes. The remaining one-third of the plate should be a lean source of protein, such as chicken, turkey and seafood.”

To help curb cancer risk, seek to eat a whole, balanced diet that includes:

— Vegetables and fruits.

— Anti-inflammatory spices.

— Plant-based proteins.

— Fiber.

Vegetables and Fruits

These fresh, whole foods contain antioxidants and a host of other helpful nutrients that keep the body working the way it’s supposed to. In addition to the vitamins, minerals, fiber and “other bioactive components that may directly impact cancer risk,” vegetables and fruits may also “potentially have an indirect impact” on cancer risk, Schenk says. Plus, the more veggies and fruits you eat, the less you tend to weigh, which can also impact your risk of developing cancer given the connection between obesity and cancer.

Adding more plants to the diet is believed to confer some protective benefits against cancer, but it’s also important to note that cancer is about more than just diet. Your genetic make-up, environmental exposures, lifestyle and other risk factors can greatly influence your chances of developing the disease. “It’s important to stress that we don’t yet have 100% cancer prevention through diet,” Leman says. “But we do have strong evidence to use in developing dietary guidelines for reducing risk.”

Leman recommends eating at least five servings (2.5 to 3 cups total) of non-starchy vegetables and fruit daily.

Anti-Inflammatory Spices

Adding turmeric — a bright orange spice found in many Indian dishes — to your diet may help reduce inflammation in the body. Cinnamon and ginger have also been shown to offer anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a hallmark feature of cancer and other chronic diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, and many doctors and researchers believe that decreasing inflammation can reduce the risk of cancer.

Plant-Based Proteins

Instead of relying heavily on animal products for protein intake, look to plants for protein. Legumes and beans are excellent sources of protein that also contain lots of fiber.

“While it’s not necessary to eat a vegetarian or vegan diet, it’s wise to limit intake of red meat to 18 ounces per week, and enjoy processed meats like ham, bacon and sausage on occasion,” Leman says.

Fiber

Increasing your intake of fiber might also help reduce your risk of cancer, specifically colorectal and gastric cancers, Proctor says. “Fiber also gives us a sense of fullness so we’re less likely to snack between meals, which helps maintain a healthy body weight.”

Leman recommends striving to consume at least 30 grams of fiber daily.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is an important part of controlling cancer risk. “We do know maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the best ways to reduce your risk for cancer. A healthy body weight is considered to be a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2.” BMI, or body mass index, is a metabolic assessment based on height and weight.

You can calculate your own BMI using the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s online BMI calculator. Aim to stay in the healthy BMI range between 18.5 and 24.9 — being underweight can pose health risks, Proctor says.

Seek Individualized Advice and Support

For people who’ve been recently diagnosed with cancer or who are in survivorship, Leman urges you to seek out individualized nutritional guidance to support treatment outcomes and help manage side-effects of cancer treatments.

“While undergoing active treatment, people often have special nutritional requirements,” she says. “Working with an oncology dietitian for individualized nutritional care and guidance can help patients manage side-effects like nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and changes in bowel habits.”

And while there’s no one “best diet” for cancer, think about everything you eat in context. Emphasize whole foods, and reduce intake of processed foods and sugars. “We have to consider the diet as a whole. We’re shifting at looking more at dietary patterns versus individual foods with respect to impact on cancer risk and cancer prevention,” Schenk says.

‘MASSIVE OPTIMISM’

RNA technology in Covid-19 vaccines
could be used to treat other diseases like cancer,
top expert says.

THE mRNA technology used in potential Covid-19
vaccines
could be deployed to treat other diseases such as
CANCER
,
a top Irish expert has said.

Professor of Biochemistry at the School of Immunology
at Trinity College
Luke O’Neill told RTE’s
Brendan O’Connor
that “there’s grounds for lots of optimism” over the
Covid-19
vaccines being developed.

mRNA technology used in Covid vaccines could be deployed to treat cancer, an Irish expert has saidmRNA technology used in Covid vaccines could be

Prof Luke O'NeillProf Luke O’Neill

Asked by O’Connor if Ireland was “counting our chickens”
too much over a Covid vaccine, the professor responded:
“I don’t think so.

Discussing U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer stating their
Covid-19 vaccine was 90 per cent effective,
Prof O’Neill said:
“Of course, it’s a press release
as I’ve said one thousand times.

“I need to see the data and the science.

“But they wouldn’t be releasing this
unless they knew it was really good.

‘LOOKING VERY GOOD’

He continued: “It’s looking very good and even more importantly, in a way, there’s at least two other vaccines that are very similar to Pfizer’s one, which are being tested as we speak.”

When asked by O’Connor about the mRNA technology in the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and their partner, the German company BioNTech, Prof O’Neill said: “You can fall off our seat as well because this could be used for other diseases as well, not just Covid, even cancer.”

He explained: “The husband and wife team –
Dr Ugur Sahin and Dr Ozlem Tureci
they developed this vaccine for BioNTech, a German company.

“They’ve been pushing this for years
and nobody was listening.”

“It was fringe,
RNA was seen as too difficult.”

“Now they’ve got somewhere and they were going
after cancer actually.”

“Now if it works in Covid,
it could work in cancer as well,
so there’s grounds for lots of
optimism.

According to Pfizer, RNA vaccines work by introducing
into the body an mRNA (messenger RNA) sequence
that contains the genetic instructions for the vaccinated
person’s own cells to produce the vaccine antigens
and generate an immune response.

coffee chartWhy is Coffee Good For You?
Here Are 7 Reasons
By Kris Gunnars
To read the full article

In recent years and decades, scientists have studied the effects of coffee on various aspects of health and their results have been nothing short of amazing. Here are 7 reasons why coffee may actually be one of the healthiest beverages on the planet.

1. Coffee Can Make You Smarter

The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine, which is a stimulant and the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Caffeine’s primary mechanism in the brain is blocking the effects of an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine. By blocking the inhibitory effects of Adenosine, caffeine actually increases neuronal firing in the brain and the release of other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.

Many controlled trials have examined the effects of caffeine on the brain, demonstrating that caffeine can improve mood, reaction time, memory, vigilance and general cognitive function.

2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat and Improves Physical Performance

There’s a good reason why you will find caffeine in most commercial fat burning supplements.

Caffeine raises metabolism and increases the oxidation of fatty acids.

3. Coffee May Drastically Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a lifestyle-related disease that has reached epidemic proportions, having increased 10-fold in a few decades and now afflicting about 300 million people.

In observational studies, coffee has been repeatedly associated with a lower risk of diabetes. The reduction in risk ranges from 23% all the way up to 67%.

A massive review article looked at 18 studies with a total of 457.922 participants. Each additional cup of coffee per day lowered the risk of diabetes by 7%. The more coffee people drank, the lower their risk.

4. Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world and a leading cause of dementia.

In prospective studies, coffee drinkers have up to a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain. Coffee may lower the risk of Parkinson’s by 32 – 60%.

5. Coffee May be Extremely Good For Your Liver

The liver is a remarkable organ that carries out hundreds of vital functions in the body.

It is very vulnerable to modern insults such as excess consumption of alcohol and fructose. Cirrhosisis the end stage of liver damage caused by diseases like alcoholism and hepatitis, where liver tissue has been largely replaced by scar tissue.

Multiple studies have shown that coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis by as much as 80%, the strongest effect for those who drank 4 or more cups per day.

Coffee may also lower the risk of liver cancer by around 40%.

6. Coffee May Decrease Your Risk of Dying

In two very large prospective epidemiological studies, drinking coffee was associated with a lower risk of death by all causes.

This effect is particularly profound in type II diabetics, one study showing that coffee drinkers had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year period.

7. Coffee is Loaded With Nutrients and Antioxidants

Many of the nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink, which actually contains a decent amount of vitamins and minerals.

A cup of coffee contains:

6% of the RDA for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5).
11% of the RDA for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2).
2% of the RDA for Niacin (B3) and Thiamine (B1).
3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.

May not seem like much, but if you drink several cups of coffee per day then this quickly adds up.

But this isn’t all. Coffee also contains a massive amount of antioxidants.

In fact, coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the western diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables combined.

Even though coffee in moderate amounts is good for you, drinking way too much of it can still be harmful.

To make sure to preserve the health benefits, don’t put sugar or anything nasty in your coffee! If it tends to affect your sleep, then don’t drink it after 2 p.m.

If anything, coffee may literally be the healthiest beverage on the planet.

And so, my friends, instead of allowing your children to drink deadly and addictive soft drinks, why not introduce them to something healthy? Yes, like coffee.

Is Truth Ever a Lie? / School Calendar 2020-21

The motivation
to learn,
and to survive,
lies through the Heart,
not the mind.
Wm. C. Anderson

Tree In Fog At Night

In frequent discortations with other educators,
I found a highly con-substantial Love of what we call
a relaxed and informal atmosphere,
combined with a real commitment to
academic freedom.
If you are old enough, you may actually recall
having teachers who were trusted enough
to make decisions
and conduct the business of counseling,
motivating and teaching children.
.
Oh,
these were the good old days!

These were the generations of Educators
that enabled the children of this Nation
to make the United States the envy of other nations.
These teachers empowered us to become
the only remaining true superpower on earth,
to acquire
more than half the wealth of the World,
while comprising only six percent of its population
and to realize that not locating a Starbucks
could be a significant, Life-altering dilemma.
How does the saying go,
“Only in America”!

We share an abhorrence of those things
that distract children
from academic and thoughtful pursuit.
Their Love of reading meshes beautifully
with our first Love.
We forbid homework
and ask our students instead,
to spend this precious time establishing a Life-time habit
and Love of reading –
with a requirement
that each child read or be read to,
for at least one hour each evening.

Freedom

As with the Finns,
we believe that overly strict rules do not translate
into dedicated scholars.
We harbor only three rules:
to be kind, to be kind and
to be kind.

And when you think deeply about it,
that covers everything.

Moments that linger in the Heart
excite us now and linger on
in the mind.
.
Leave the Flowers of your precious Smiles
at the entrance
to each precious moment.

Without your
Love,
there is no day.

Health experts have been baffled by a rise in suicide among teens and young adults.
  • Suicide is the second-leading cause of death
for older teens and young adults.
  • The suicide rate has been increasing from 2007.
  • The rate went from 6.8 deaths per 100,000 people to 10.6, according to the CDC report.

A reportTrusted Source
from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
shows that the teen suicide rate in the United States
has skyrocketed in recent years.

Suicide was recently ranked as the
second-leading cause of death
for people between the ages of 15 and 24 years old.

Each year, about 7 out of 100,000 young adults
between the ages of 15 and 19
die by suicide each year —
and that number only seems to be growing.

Woman Praying And Free Bird Enjoying Nature On Sunset Background, Hope Concept

At the Anderson School
visitors are sometimes mildly shocked
to find such things as: barefoot boys (and girls)
fluttering down the hall
(they really do feel more relaxed and at home this way),
or a child asleep during the school day
(why fight Mother Nature – if you are tired, rest!
After a nap, children are energized
and ready again to learn and play) and a mild,
low-grade level of chaos can naturally prevail.

                  Another Anderson School Scholar.

This is normal behavior for the young
and can become highly productive.
It provides opportunity for the interplay of ideas
and Hopes and Dreams
as kids banter back and forth.
.
And there are intangibles that result:
the modeling of Creative flux, improved self-esteem
and self-confidence and the intrinsic motivation
generated by the children themselves.
Since our bright students are busy teaching and working
with each other,
the tendency is toward non-stop communication,
as they group themselves according to interests, not age.
Typically, you find a very young scholar teaching older types
and excited to share knowledge.

At our school
students keep the same teachers for many years.
They actually get to know them
and we treat each other like Family.
Why not?
.
Are we not really related
in many ways?
.
We promote self-reliance and autonomous learning,
minimize competition, assail perfectionism,
promote informality
and a relaxed Ho Ho Ho Home-like atmosphere,
remove the harmful
and potentially devastating emphasis upon grades
(no grades or report cards are provided
scholars are expected to perform at a mastery level of 90%
not 70%,
without time constraints)
and, importantly,
we eliminate homework.
As educators, we have had plenty of time during the day
to get the job done.

Think about it!
.
Children NEED to be involved in many
after school activities,

The list goes on and on.

A great after school activity
helps children on many levels.
Your child builds community connections,
and makes a positive impact on something
that’s important to him or her..
.
Music
should be an essential part
of every child’s development.
A great song can light up their Hearts,
encourage them to move around and dance,
and help instill a sense of confidence.
We can enjoy the benefits of music
from the moment we are born,
but NOT
if we are pestering our parents
about homework,
asking for help with things like
Algebra,
that one parent never took
and the other one forgot
decades ago.

And parents are essentially not qualified to teach at Home
and do not have the time or patience.
They worked hard all day
and the boss did not assign them
homework.

Parents would not tolerate this.
They would find another employer.
But your children cannot simply find another teacher.
They are riveted to a desk,
with little Hope of finding the time
they need to do the real work of Kids –
they need to
PLAY.

We also provide the freedom to do such things as:
progress at your own pace,
allow children to prepare their own meals
and dine whenever they like
(some “graze” throughout the day)
and play whenever they complete morning or afternoon assignments
(a few will work all weekend so they may play at school).
This is real Academic Freedom
and allows for the independent use of personal judgment.
We want our children to practice making many, many decisions
and mistakes,
while they are young and under our guidance.

Man Hands Holding Global Network And Data Customer Connection On Nature Background.

After all,
they
will be making every decision regarding their own lives,
and our own lives, and in a few years.
So be very kind to your children, for in the end,
they
will be all you have left.

And don’t be shocked if your children can’t survive on their own
in the near future,
if you did every thing for them and made their every decision.
They may become so dependent
that they NEVER survive.
It happens.

Some schools are largely successful
because they truly realize that,
Less is more”.
To be less demanding equates to more time at home
with Mom and Dad
and more time to play
and this always leads to a more
psychologically healthy person
someone who really WANTS to go to school the next day
(and more importantly, wants to Live
and
knows how to
PLAY
).

Hiking

Children need to be
more relaxed, energized and ready to study,
rather than being burned out, bored, fatigued and more deeply depressed than they will ever say
which can result in their becoming anxious, obnoxious,
angry, rebellious and unwilling to continue what has evolved
into drudgery and a loathing of going to school.

And when you think about it,
wouldn’t you rebel if you were stressed out,
overly assessed, classified, compared, bored, structured,
and selected and sorted ad nausium.
.
Why,
revolutions have occurred for less
revolutions of the mind
and of the Family.
We see many children today who are dropping out
mentally,
socially, emotionally, physically
and in other ways that more frequently become
SELF destructive.

Is Truth Ever a Lie?
What if you
are Living
a lie?

I have been asked why the educational systems are imploding?
What’s broken and what can we, as parents and educators,
do to fix it?

Essentially, our educational systems are imploding because:

1. Our schools are now devoid of essential academic Feedom,
2. They are saddled with the ineffective and truly oppressive
No Child Left Behind Act and its sinfully negative byproducts and
3. Schools lack the fiery furnace of competition in the free
market place.

The solutions are simple but,
in our present static state of mind,
unavailable.
However,
if ever we do decide to act
we know what to do:

We need to provide each student, through their parents,
the funds
to purchase their schooling wherever they choose to go.
The natural and highly beneficial effect of competition for this money would produce results similar to every other commodity in the marketplace.

Beautifully crafted, thoughtful and productive products in the form of innovative and dynamic curriculums and remarkable institutions of learning would be engineered by our gifted educators in
competition with each other.
But importantly, regardless of the outcome,
they would serve to please our Parents and Children.

Sunset On The Beach

But
we have become imprisoned
to the precept that government can extrinsically motivate schools and teachers, utilizing the negative bias of assessment and with such harsh and punitive prerogatives as the loss of employment for teachers and administrators, virtually worthless and shameful labels, accusations, inevitably harmful performance evaluations and even the unthinkable closure of entire schools.
Such closures are so severe that one can imagine
less damage being inflicted to a school community
even in time of war.

Scenic Slot Canyon

This punitive, FEAR based system shall never produce overall sustainable positive results,
especially for those children most in need.
This system is far beyond broken.
It poses a very real-time danger to our society.
This obviatedly biased bent toward negative reinforcement
is a conceptualization rejected many years ago
in the study of Child behavior.

Our boat is now sinking
by the bow and no longer in sight of the shore.
We seemingly cannot even identify
the real problems with our schools.
But we act like we do really know who or what is to blame.
So we keep felling the trees all around us
in order to glimpse a sliver of the light of understanding
from above
and do not even know
there is a fragile and endangered forest
all around us.

For our underpaid, overworked and unappreciated Educators
should never have been marked and targeted.
They are not to blame!
And our children should never have been used as pawns
in this unintelligible game.

We now find it virtually impossible to patch our Ship of State,
in light of the large, gaping holes created by FEAR,
a focus upon self-serving and selfish interests
and an inability to locate words such as equitable,
fair or open-minded in any dictionary
to be found in our capitals
of government in Austin or Washington.

What can parents do to help children attain success
and be the best they can be?

Well,
if your child is truly suffering
(and can you believe you are paying for this abuse
with your taxes
or tuition?)
I recommend removing them from any oppressive and harmful environment immediately
(that means today!).

Then,
you may want to take them for refreshments
to a fun place
(they may actually remember having fun).
.
There you can apologize
for not sheltering them from the storm,
for not protecting them or truly being their advocate
and being there for them when you were needed.
It helps to let a child know you are Human
and make mistakes.

It will also help if you let them know
that you will now and forever more be there for them
and not allow anyone else or any other school
to make them so unhappy and miserable again.
.
After you wipe the tears from their eyes,
take a moment to wipe away yours.
And remember,
if your child forgives you, it is in the past.
It is over.
Now you can go forward
and forgive all those who transgressed against your
Beloved Children.

Just don’t vote for them again.
Have mercy on the next generation.

Now,
plan the future.
Let your Child help you.
.

Explore the many other avenues available
(and there are many).
Remind yourself how thankful we all are
that Thomas Edison’s Mother
removed him from such a school at a very early age.
Now that’s what I call – seeing the Light!
With over 1,100 patents to his name,
we can all be thankful that she removed him from school,
which now enables us to watch a great movie tonight,
with sound and the ability to record it.
A compassionate decision for one deeply Loved child,
has led us all out of the dark and into the light.
Thank you Mrs. Edison!
So just follow her example and start
by stopping the pain.

Next,
you will need to examine what happened to our schools
and to your child.
And that is a complex journey fraught with unbelievable intrusions
into the coliseums and colloquiums of academia.

Special interests,
and not so special lawmakers,
intruded into the Sacred spaces of our Children’s classrooms,
their Home away from Home,
assuming they knew more than highly trained
and devoutly dedicated educators
about what your children needed.
When in fact,
teachers were well qualified
and simply needed to be
left alone.

Sunset And Tree

Lawmakers could have helped
the wonderful, beautiful, caring and ever-giving Teachers
by paying them a decent wage
and providing more money for materials
(many, many teachers have spent their own meager funds
on your children and without you ever aware of it).
But we, as individuals, elected people
who obviously did not know how to educate children,
and much more importantly,
how fragile they are
or how to care for them.

Their pride went before
our fall.

Simplicity

I fondly remember many years ago my good friend,
who was a State Representative, Homer Dear,
a wonderful and Loving retired school teacher and administrator,
calling to ask what should be done, in my opinion,
legislatively.

My immediate response was mandate relief.
The volumes of dictates from our zealous state agency and the legislature, were so voluminous that no one on this Planet
even knew everything that was required of a school.
.
He then sponsored a bill to provide such relief.
Naturally, it was defeated.
No one is going to tell the legislature
that much of what they did is actually too much
and leading toward a dastardly day of self-destruction
(this is the impending implosion).
But in essence,
Homer knew what needed to be done.
And now you know.

Freedom

Simply stated: remove nearly all of the governmental laws, mandates (typically unfunded – thank you), guidelines and regulations relative to education, substantially realign and reduce the size, scope and budget of the state regulatory agency (eliminating well over a billion dollars that funds this unbelievable megalopoliptic and essentially counter – productive enterprise) and get every one, and I mean every one out of the teacher’s way and out of the teacher’s classroom.
.
On your way out, buy her (or him)
a cup of well-earned coffee.

This can significantly contribute to the academic freedom that Dr. Reed Dawson, a beloved Baylor professor of mine, warned way back in 1973, was perilously close to death.
He was right.

The infamous and highly destructive Texas Assessment of Basic Skills test, and its destructive off-springs (T.E.A.M.S., T.A.K.S., etc.)
was about to be unleashed
upon our unsuspecting and naive populace.

Banff National Park

Academic Freedom,
as with all the productive and beneficial benefits that any freedom provides, was about to be targeted and totally destroyed.
And it began with the blunt instrument of institutional sin in 1980.
Simply stated,
this oppressive test needs to be abolished
and accompanied by an apology to all of its victims,
and there are many.

Now,
after you give back freedom to teachers to teach,
come back in one year,
and you and your child will be well on the road to being Happy.
Trust me, teachers knew what to do all along.
How many years did our educators spend in a College or University preparing to take an oath of poverty,
so he or she could have the Honor of teaching your child?

Yes,
the teacher can do the job.
Just get everyone out of her (or his) way.
Remember,
in the successful schools, such as in Finland,
less is more.
And it always has been.
Isn’t that in the Bible?

“Less is more
and more is less.

Psalm 37:16-17

Moonrise Over Lake

Simplicity
must replace the absolute mess that we have today!
By the way,
the highest achieving schools in the entire World,
value exactly this –
simplicity.

Finance

Finland sets the example for us again,
in providing roughly EQUAL per-pupil funding.
The gap between the best and worst performing schools in Finland
was the smallest tested.

So what happened to our free enterprise system
and the competitive market place?
.
You know,
the one we preach about from on high in every school in America.
The system that created such wealth for us,
that we have reached record levels of obesity, consumption and waste. Why is the competitive marketplace of our free enterprise system provided an exemption in the marketplace of knowledge?
Do we not yet realize that competition is the primary catalyst for excellence in our economic society,
that it is the engine that drives us
to unsurpassed prosperity?

Or are we not willing to vote for people of courage and conscience or recruit those rare individuals to run for public office who are willing to sacrifice an innate defensiveness and desire for self-serving interests for the sake of what is most precious in our lives –
our children.

Nice Flowers

To date we have not mustered enough courage or votes
to really change
anything.
And my fear is that we may never do so!
This boat full of unwilling and highly dependent people who will soon need to have everyone bailing the waters of indifference, and neglect. The perilous sea has already reached the water line
and mighty Casey has struck out.

Stay tuned,
the game will resume overseas.
What’s that gurgling sound?

Can you even imagine
educators from other countries observing that our system
of public education strives to,
“leave no child behind”
while we post a drop out rate for Fort Worth I. S. D.
of over 45 percent,
according to the
Editorial Projects in Education Resource Center.

Let’s compare that to less than 4 [that’s FOUR] percent
for other countries.

My Dear Friends,
we left half of our children at the starting gate.
And we did not just leave them behind,
we abandoned them with no hope
that they will ever truly flourish and prosper
But, on the bright side,
we meagerly raised the minimum wage
with them in mind,
didn’t we?

Tree Sunset LandscapeUltimately,
these lost children will never even be able to sustain
themselves,
much less impact this system
that has been so neglectful to so many.
And the system we created and perpetuate to this day will,
one day soon,
not be able to support them or their children.
The weight of so much water will cause this listing ship
to topple over.
(Have you ever tried to live on the minimum wage?)

We left many of our children with little hope
that they will ever truly thrive
in our highly competitive economy.
Our focus upon minimum skills for all
has evolved into a minimum wage for many.

Our mediocrity has become merit to us,
the mediocre.
And our children did not deserve this!
They are the victims
of our now tired, cowardly, self-centered neglect.

It is a sad commentary
that our fear to change what needs to be changed
is now the driving force
behind the fall of twenty-first century
Rome.

“I Love this post.
My mother, a teacher and the daughter of a teacher who attended segregated public schools in the 1930s and 1940s, chose the private school to which she sent my sisters and I because, she said,
“I could not stand the rigid desks and rows in the public schools.
When I saw kids sprawled out in the halls, talking and laughing,
that was the place I want you kids to go!

I have a hard time believing
that “reformers” don’t notice that the schools for the intellectual and socioeconomic elite are more – not less – free, relaxed and playful.”

Diesel Exhaust and Cancer
from the American Cancer Society

(Here is another very good reason
to buy an all electric vehicle.)

What is diesel exhaust?

Diesel is a type of fuel derived from crude oil. Diesel fuel is used in most large engines, including those used in many trucks, buses, trains, construction and farm equipment, generators, ships, and in some cars.

Diesel exhaust is made up of 2 main parts: gases and soot (particles). Each of these, in turn, is made up of many different substances.

  • The gas portion of diesel exhaust is mostly carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur oxides, and hydrocarbons, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
  • The soot (particulate) portion of diesel exhaust is made up of particles such as carbon, organic materials (including PAHs), and traces of metallic compounds.

Both the gases and the soot of diesel exhaust contain PAHs.

Exhaust from diesel engines brings a complex mixture of soot and gases to roadways, cities, farms, and other places. Health concerns about diesel exhaust relate not only to cancer, but also to other health problems such as lung and heart diseases.

How are people exposed to diesel exhaust?

People can be exposed to diesel exhaust at work, around the home, or while traveling mainly by breathing in the soot and gases. Diesel exhaust exposure is widespread in the modern world.

The amount of diesel exhaust people are exposed to varies greatly. Measuring these exposures is not easy because diesel exhaust is chemically complex and many parts of it are also found in a lot of other sources. This is a major challenge when trying to study the health effects of diesel exhaust.

At work

People with some of the highest work exposures include truck drivers, toll booth workers, miners, forklift drivers and other heavy machinery operators, railroad and dock workers, and garage workers and mechanics. Some farm workers also spend a lot of time around diesel exhaust.

Where you live and play

People can also be exposed to diesel exhaust where they live and play, although this is typically at lower levels than in the workplace. Exposures are highest where diesel traffic is heaviest, such as along major highways and in cities.

While traveling in a vehicle

Exposure to diesel exhaust may be higher, especially when traveling on roads with heavier truck or bus traffic. Commuting for work is a potential source of diesel exhaust exposure for many people. One particular area of concern is children’s exposures to diesel exhaust and other pollutants while riding in school buses, as the buses themselves typically run on diesel fuel.

Does diesel exhaust cause cancer?

Two main types of studies are used to try to figure out if a substance or exposure causes cancer.

  • Studies in labs: In these studies, animals are exposed to a substance (often in very large doses) to see if it causes tumors or other health problems. Researchers might also expose normal cells in a lab dish to the substance to see if it causes the types of changes seen in cancer cells. It’s not always clear if the results from these types of studies will apply to humans, but lab studies are a good way to find out if a substance might possibly cause cancer.
  • Studies in people: Another type of study looks at cancer rates in different groups of people. Such a study might compare the cancer rate in a group exposed to a substance to the cancer rate in a group not exposed to it, or compare it to the cancer rate in the general population. But sometimes it can be hard to know what the results of these studies mean, because many other factors might affect the results.

In most cases neither type of study provides enough evidence on its own, so researchers usually look at both lab-based and human studies when trying to figure out if something causes cancer.

Results of studies in the lab

In studies of cells done in lab dishes, diesel exhaust (as soot or chemical extracts) has been found to cause changes in the cells’ DNA. These types of changes are usually needed for cancer to develop, although not all substances that cause DNA changes also cause cancer.

Several studies have found that long-term, heavy exposure to diesel exhaust can cause lung cancer in lab animals such as rats.

Results of studies in people

It’s not easy to study the possible health effects of diesel exhaust in people. First, it is often very hard to correctly define and measure the level of exposure. It can also be hard to account for the other cancer risk factors that people exposed to diesel exhaust might have, such as smoking.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer is the major cancer thought to be linked to diesel exhaust. Several studies of workers exposed to diesel exhaust have shown small but significant increases in risk of lung cancer. Men with the heaviest and most prolonged exposures, such as railroad workers, heavy equipment operators, miners, and truck drivers, have been found to have higher lung cancer death rates than unexposed workers. Based on the number of people exposed at work, diesel exhaust may pose a substantial health risk.

The possible link between lung cancer and exposure to diesel exhaust outside the workplace has not been studied extensively.

Other cancers

Several studies have looked for possible links between diesel exhaust and other cancers, including cancers of the bladder, larynx (voice box), esophagus, stomach, and pancreas. Studies have also looked for links to blood system cancers such as lymphomas and leukemias (including childhood leukemia). While some studies have found possible links, others have not. More research is needed to show if diesel exhaust exposure is linked to any of these other cancers.

What expert agencies say about diesel exhaust

Several national and international agencies study substances in the environment to determine if they can cause cancer. (A substance that causes cancer or helps cancer grow is called a carcinogen.) The American Cancer Society looks to these organizations to evaluate the risks based on evidence from laboratory, animal, and human research studies.

Some of these expert agencies have classified diesel exhaust as to whether it can cause cancer, based largely on the possible link to lung cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Its major goal is to identify causes of cancer. IARC classifies diesel engine exhaust as “carcinogenic to humans,” based on sufficient evidence that it is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer. IARC also notes that there is “some evidence of a positive association” between diesel exhaust and bladder cancer.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) is formed from parts of several different US government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The NTP has classified exposure to diesel exhaust particulates as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen,” based on limited evidence from studies in humans (mainly linking it to lung cancer) and supporting evidence from lab studies.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), an electronic database that contains information on human health effects from exposure to various substances in the environment. The EPA classifies diesel exhaust as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is part of the CDC that studies exposures in the workplace. NIOSH has determined that diesel exhaust is a “potential occupational carcinogen.”

(For more information on the classification systems used by these agencies, see Known and Probable Human Carcinogens.)

Can I reduce my exposure to diesel exhaust?

Diesel exhaust can cause health problems and can most likely increase the risk of lung cancer (and possibly other cancers).

Since most people’s exposure is from exhaust near highways and other roads, government regulations may be as important as personal choices in limiting exposure to potentially harmful chemicals in diesel exhaust. For example, as a result of EPA regulations and improvements in technology, new diesel engines give off much lower amounts of certain chemicals than older engines. Still, it’s not yet clear how much this might lower the risks, and many older diesel engines are still in use, so it makes sense to avoid exposure whenever possible.

At work

If you are exposed to diesel exhaust at work, there are ways to reduce or prevent exposures. Some of these measures can also help protect you from other chemical exposures that are likely to happen in the workplace.

If you work in or around vehicles that run on diesel fuel, you might be able to limit the amount of time you spend near engines while they are running. Limiting the time spent near idling engines may help lower your exposure to fumes.

Talk with your employer to be sure that you are protected adequately. Personal protective equipment, such as respirators, may be a key part of a workplace protective program. If needed, engineering changes, such as ventilating the exhaust away from where you breathe, can also be important.

For more information on preventing or reducing workplace exposures at your job, consult your company’s safety and health manager. If needed, you can get additional assistance from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the government agency responsible for enforcing workplace safety.

Where you live and play

If you are exposed to diesel exhaust fumes in your environment, you can take some of the same precautions. For example, try to avoid or limit spending time near large sources of diesel exhaust, such as near trucks and buses. Commuting to and from work exposes many people to possible sources of diesel exhaust, whether they are in a car or on some type of public transportation. For some people, working from home (telecommuting or teleworking) might be an option to lower their exposure, as well as to save money on commuting expenses.

On a governmental level, regulations such as the Clean Air Act and programs such as the EPA’s National Clean Diesel Campaign are designed to reduce diesel emissions from trucks and other large engines, lowering public exposure to diesel exhaust.

Another important program is Clean School Bus USA. Children can be exposed to diesel exhaust during school bus travel or when standing near running school buses outside of school. Clean School Bus USA brings together partners from business, education, transportation, and public-health organizations to reduce children’s exposure to bus-related air pollutants by aiming to:

  • Reduce unnecessary school bus idling
  • Replace older buses with newer, less-polluting buses
  • Upgrade existing buses with technologies to reduce their emissions

Many people feel
that they do not really

The very hectic pace of our Lives
 does not allow us
to listen to our
Hearts.

We suffer from an enormous
sense of emptiness and loss,
without knowing that these feelings
generate such darkness.

But,
if we do decide to Journey forth
in order to find ourselves
and re-discover who we really are,
we can learn many things.
Spiritual Peace
 can be found.

And it may be found
in the silence
that is necessary

Disconnecting
from the stresses of work and Living

is very difficult for many people.
And,
it is becoming more difficult
with the passage of each day.

Reconnecting with your real

They are,
in part,
what you are recovering from.

UK doctors will finally trial whether vitamin D can protect people from Covid-19 after months of mounting evidence the cheap supplement could be a life-saver.

  • Queen Mary University is recruiting 5,000 people for its Vitamin D study
  • Volunteers will be given either 3,200, 800 or 400 international units a day
  • Government says 400 a day is enough, but taking more won’t have bad impacts

Doctors will finally trial whether vitamin D can actually protect people from Covid-19 amid mounting evidence the 3p-a-day supplement could be a life-saver.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London will recruit 5,000 volunteers to take the vitamin for six months if they do not already take high doses.

Experts will then assess whether participants are at less risk of catching the virus and developing a severe bout of the disease over the winter months.

A mountain of studies have found an overwhelming amount of people who test positive for Covid-19 do not have enough vitamin D in their bodies and the sickest of patients are often deficient.

Britons are most at risk of being vitamin D deficient between October and April when sunlight levels are too low for the body to make the vitamin — with those with darker skin at even higher risk.

Around two in five Brits are deficient during the winter, when respiratory infections are most common. In the US, at least two in five citizens also lack sufficient levels of the vitamin.

It has led to calls for doctors to dish out cheap vitamin D supplements — which cost little and have no dangerous side effects — to fight the disease, rather than waiting for a vaccine which may never be found

It comes as researchers from University of Brighton have today called for care home residents to be given the ‘sunshine vitamin’.

Vitamin D supplements are safe, cheap and readily available - costing as little as 6p a pill and sold in most pharmacies, supermarkets and health shops

As well as in supplements, vitamin D is also available through foods, including oily fish, red meat and eggs (right). A Singaporean study earlier in the year of nearly 800 people found almost 99% of Covid-19 patients who died had vitamin D deficiency (left)

CARE HOME RESIDENTS SHOULD BE GIVEN VITAMIN D

Care home residents are not being given vitamin D, which may be protective against Covid-19, despite Government guidance, researchers say.

Advice from Public Health England from before the pandemic states: ‘People whose skin has little or no exposure to the sun, like those in institutions such as care homes, or who always cover their skin when outside, risk vitamin D deficiency and need to take a supplement throughout the year.‘

They should take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms all year round, and not just in the winter when there is less sunlight.

However, interviews with people involved in elderly residential care, such as GPs and care home managers in southeast England, found that none was aware of any care home routinely offering the supplement, The Times reported.

Only a dietitian seemed aware of the guidance, according to the findings in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health.

Despite health chiefs advising residents should be given supplements all year round because they rarely go outside, academics found this was not happening in care homes in the south east of England.

Trial volunteers will receive tablets containing either 800 IU or 3,200 IU a day of the vitamin, which they will be asked to take for six months.

There will also be a control group taking the NHS recommended amount of 400IU a day

Although this level is advised for the winter months, experts said taking more wouldn’t pose a risk as the vitamin is harmless and the body simply removes any excess levels.

But there is no group not taking a vitamin supplement in the trial, meaning it is impossible for the experts to accurately compare differences between the groups.

Researchers will track the incidence of doctor-diagnosed or laboratory-confirmed acute respiratory infections in participants during the trial, to see whether the supplements have affected their risk or severity of infection.

Volunteers will also be required to do a finger-prick test to check their vitamin D levels.

Dr David Jolliffe, from Queen Mary University of London, said the study had the potential to give a ‘definitive answer’ on whether vitamin D could protect against coronavirus

‘Vitamin D supplements are low in cost, low in risk and widely accessible; if proven effective, they could significantly aid in our global fight against the virus,’ he said.

Professor Adrian Martineau, who is also involved in the study, said: ‘There is mounting evidence that vitamin D might reduce the risk of respiratory infections, with some recent studies suggesting that people with lower vitamin D levels may be more susceptible to coronavirus.

A study by Tehran University, in Iran, and Boston University analysed data from 235 hospitalised patients with Covid-19. Patients who had sufficient vitamin D - of at least 30 ng/mL— were 51.5 per cent less likely to die from the disease. Although no one in the study under age 40 died, fatalities  (red) were more  common among vitamin  D deficient people (under the  black  line) of all ages

University of Chicago researchers studying 500 Americans’ vitamin D levels  found 60 per cent higher rates of Covid-19 among people with low levels of the ‘sunshine vitamin’.

What have just some of the DOZENS of studies into vitamin D and Covid-19 shown?

When? September.

By who? Cordoba University in Spain.

What did scientists study? 50 Covid-19 hospital patients with Covid-19 were given vitamin D. Their health outcomes were compared with 26 volunteers in a control group who were not given the tablets.

What did they find? Only one of the 50 patients needed intensive care and none died. Half of 26 virus sufferers who did not take vitamin D were later admitted to intensive care and two died.

What were the study’s limitations? Small pool of volunteers. Patients’ vitamin D levels were not checked before admission. Comorbidities were not taken into consideration.

When? September.

By Who? University of Chicago.

What did scientists study? 500 Americans’ vitamin D levels were tested. Researchers then compared volunteers’ levels with how many caught coronavirus.

What did they find? 60 per cent higher rates of Covid-19 among people with low levels of the ‘sunshine vitamin’.

What were the study’s limitations?

Researchers did not check for other compounding factors. Unclear whether or not volunteers were vitamin D deficient at the time of their coronavirus tests. People’s age, job and where they lived – factors which greatly increase the chance of contracting the virus – were not considered.

When? September.

By Who? Tehran University, in Iran, and Boston University.

What did scientists study? Analysed data from 235 hospitalized patients with Covid-19.

What did they find? Patients who had sufficient vitamin D – of at least 30 ng/mL— were 51.5 per cent less likely to die from the disease. They also had a significantly lower risk of falling seriously ill or needing ventilation. Patients who had plenty of the nutrient also had less inflammation – often a deadly side effect of Covid-19.

What were the study’s limitations? Confounding factors, such as smoking, and social economic status were not recorded for all patients and could have an impact on illness severity.

When? July.

By Who? Tel Aviv University, Israel.

What did scientists study? 782 people who tested positive for coronavirus had their vitamin d levels prior to infection assessed retrospectively and compared to healthy people.

What did they find? People with vitamin D levels below 30 ng/ml – optimal – were 45 per cent more likely to test positive and 95 per cent more likely to be hospitalised.

What were the study’s limitations?  Did not look at underlying health conditions and did not check vitamin D levels at the time of infection.

When? June.

By Who? Brussels Free University.

What did scientists study? Compared vitamin D levels in almost 200 Covid-19 hospital patients with a control group of more than 2,000 healthy people.

What did they find? Men who were hospitalised with the infection were significantly more likely to have a vitamin D deficiency than healthy men of the same age. Deficiency rates were 67 per cent in the COVID-19 patient group, and 49 per cent in the control group. The same was not found for women.

What were the study’s limitations?  Independent scientists say blood vitamin D levels go down when people develop serious illness, which the study did not take into consideration. This suggests that it is the illness that is leading to lower blood vitamin D levels in this study, and not the other way around.

When? June.

By who? Inha University in Incheon, South Korea.

What did scientists study? 50 hospital patients with Covid-19 were checked for levels of all vital vitamins and compared to a control group.

What did they find? 76 per cent of them were deficient in vitamin D, and a severe vitamin D deficiency (<10 ng/dl) was found in 24 per cent of Covid-19 patients and just 7 per cent in the control group.

What were the study’s limitations?

Small sample size and researchers never accounted for vitamin levels dropping when they fall ill.

When? June.

By Who?. Independent scientists in Indonesia.

What did scientists study? Checked vitamin D levels in 780 Covid-19 hospital patients.

What did they find? Almost 99% of patients who died had vitamin D deficiency. Of patients with vitamin D levels higher than 30 ng/ml  – considered optimal – only  per cent died.

What were the study’s limitations?  It was not peer-reviewed by fellow scientists, a process that often uncovers flaws in studies.

When? May.

By Who? University of Glasgow.

What did scientists study? Vitamin D levels in 449 people from the UK Biobank who had confirmed Covid-19 infection.

What did they find? Vitamin D deficiency was associated with an increased risk in infection – but not after adjustment for con-founders such as ethnicity. It led to the team to conclude their ‘findings do not support a potential link between vitamin D concentrations and risk of Covid-19 infection.’

What were the study’s limitations?  Vitamin D levels were taken 10 to 14 years beforehand.

When? May.

By Who? University of East Anglia.

What did scientists study? Average levels of vitamin D in populations of 20 European countries were compared with Covid-19 infection and death rates at the time.

What did they find? The mean level of vitamin D in each country was ‘strongly associated’ with higher levels of Covid-19 cases and deaths. The authors said at the time: ‘The most vulnerable group of population for Covid-19 is also the one that has the most deficit in vitamin D.

What were the study’s limitations?  The number of cases in each country was affected by the number of tests performed, as well as the different measures taken by each country to prevent the spread of infection. And it only looked at correlation, not causation.

When? May.

By Who? Northwestern University.

What did scientists study? Crunched data from dozens of studies around the world that included vitamin D levels among Covid-19 patients

What did they find? Patients with a severe deficiency are twice as likely to experience major complications and die.

What were the study’s limitations?  Cases and deaths in each country was affected by the number of tests performed.

‘Vitamin D deficiency is more common in older people, in people who are overweight, and in Black and Asian people – all of the groups who are at increased risk of becoming very ill with Covid-19.

‘The UK government already recommends that people take a low-dose vitamin D supplement over the winter to protect their bone health, but we do not know if this will have an effect on Covid-19 or if higher doses might be able to provide protection against the virus.

‘The CORONAVIT trial will test whether higher doses of vitamin D might offer protection against winter respiratory infections including Covid-19.’

Arguments on the link between Vitamin D deficiency and its observed link with poor Covid-19 outcomes started to gather pace as early as May

The problem lies in the fact there is a lack of gold-standard medical research – the randomised controlled trials which compare people who are given the supplement with those who are not to see which group fares better.

Only one study has done this so far, conducted by the University of Cordoba in Spain and published last month.

Researchers gave high doses of calcifediol – a type of vitamin D supplement – to 50 patients hospitalised with the disease.

There were no deaths among volunteers receiving the vitamin and all 50 patients were eventually discharged by the end of the study. But two of the 26 patients in a control group, who were not given the tablets, died.

Just one patient given calcifediol felt ill enough to be admitted to intensive care, whereas half of the participants in the control group were taken to ICU and two died.

But many scientists have criticised the study, saying its sample size is too small for any firm conclusions to be drawn about the impact of Vitamin D.

Nonetheless, it was the most promising result for trials of the vitamin so far, and corresponds to earlier research that fixing vitamin deficiency might cut mortality rates by half.

A Northwestern University study, published in May, found Covid-19 patients with a severe Vitamin D deficiency are twice as likely to experience major complications and die.

Nearly 99 per cent of Covid-19 patients who are vitamin D deficient die, according to a study from Indonesian researchers who analyzed hospital records of 780 people who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Results revealed 98.9 per cent of infected patients defined as vitamin D deficient — below 20ng/ml — died. Yet this fell to just 4.1 per cent for patients who had enough of the nutrient.

Researchers warned the study was not definitive, however, because the patients with high vitamin D levels were healthier and younger.

Another study by Tehran University, in Iran, and Boston University, found hospital Covid-19 patients who had sufficient vitamin D – of at least 30 ng/mL— were 51.5 per cent less likely to die from the disease.

The study of 235 hospitalized patients with Covid-19 also showed those with enough vitamin D had a significantly lower risk of falling seriously ill or needing ventilation.

Patients who had plenty of the nutrient also had less inflammation – often a deadly side effect of Covid-19.

However, there were flaws in these studies, such as a lack of acknowledgement of confounding factors, such as smoking, and social economic status, which were were not recorded for all patients but could have an impact on illness severity.

Some participants’ underlying health conditions were not defined, despite having a major impact on disease severity.

There have also been at least three studies which have suggested those who have enough vitamin D are less likely to catch the coronavirus in the first place.

But Professor Ian Jones, a virologist at the University of Reading, told MailOnline: ‘My general view is that if there is no clear cut view on vitamin D after six months of debate then there is nothing in it.’

But given the findings so far, it astonished scientists that Mr Hancock was so quick to throw out the ‘sunshine vitamin’ as a potential treatment.

Matt Hancock wrongly told the House of Commons in September that a Government-funded ‘trial’ investigating vitamin D showed it did not ‘appear to have any impact’

He was told to ‘get his facts straight’ in September after shooting down vitamin D as a potential coronavirus treatment despite a growing body of evidence from around the world suggesting it works.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Morgan told MailOnline the secretary of state ‘needs to be listening, not dismissing’.

She added: ‘I hope Matt Hancock will take a less flippant approach to potential treatments in future and get his facts straight before making such comments. We’re in a crisis, it’s time for politicians to stop playing science and listen to the experts.’

Chris Chapman, chief executive officer of manufacturer YPV, which offers a home vitamin D test kit, said the company was ‘deeply disappointed’ about Mr Hancock’s comments.

He said: ‘We have seen a mountain of evidence that vitamin D has a positive, and at times life-saving, impact on people suffering with severe symptoms of coronavirus.

‘We fundamentally disagree with the Health Secretary on this matter, his comments display incredible ignorance.

‘We urge him to practice his well-trodden mantra by following the science, which overwhelmingly points to the benefits of vitamin D when it comes tackling coronavirus.‘

The ‘sunshine vitamin’ – nicknamed because it is acquired by spending time in the sun – is postulated to protect against Covid-19

A number of studies have suggested the immune-boosting vitamin could protect people from coronavirus after finding adults deficient in the nutrient are more at risk of catching the disease.

And those who spend more time indoors – such as in a care home – or who have darker skin – those of a Black, Asian or ethnic minority (BAME) background – are also at greater risk of Covid-19.

Officials estimate one in five Britons are deficient in vitamin D — the equivalent of 13million Britons

But some people are more at risk than others; the rate is up to 90 per cent in people with darker skin who find it harder to obtain the vitamin from the sun.

Advice from PHE states: ‘People whose skin has little or no exposure to the sun, like those in institutions such as care homes, or who always cover their skin when outside, risk vitamin D deficiency and need to take a supplement throughout the year.

But a recent University of Brighton study suggests care home residents are not being given the supplement.

The article was written by BSMS MSc Public Health graduate Joe Williams and the university’s Principal Lecturer for Health Promotion and Public Health, Carol Williams.

The team interviewed four GPs four care home managers, a dietitian, a falls specialist, two public health practitioners and a senior doctor in elderly care, The Times reported.

A report from the Academy of Medical Sciences in July said: ‘It has been suggested that low levels of vitamin D — endemic within the UK, exacerbated by lockdown and which worsen over winter — may contribute to susceptibility to Covid-19.‘

The Lighter Side of Life / We Are ALL a Modern Work of Art / Sept. 1 We Begin Again

Dedicated to my Wonderful Friend
Rev. Donald Graves
Tucson Center for Spiritual Living

Don and I grew up together
and had so very many
wonderful adventures in
Boy Scout Troop 17.
What
a Truly Wonderful
Friend.

Thank You
for the Beautiful memories.
You are deeply admired
and Loved.

.

“You are the Beloved.
Be sure to treat yourself that way.”
– Rev. Donald Graves

I was recently joking around
with one of our very young students,
something I am wont to do,
(do frequently)
saying:
“Well, you know,
because I”m lazy, fat and ugly.”
At which point he looked intently into my eyes
and quietly said,
“Your not fat.”

I laughed so hard
I lost two pounds.

My Dear Friends,
we need to laugh
at the confusion that prevails
in Life
and in living.
.
It is hilarious!

“Eventually all things fall into place.
Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moment,
and know everything happens for a reason.”

Albert Schweitzer

The illogical, superficial,
and unbelievable things we do,
collectively and as individuals
of unbelievable perfunctory indifference
toward the nature of our reality,
can be truly funny.
.

So why not enjoy it?

“Do not take Life too seriously.
You will never get out of it alive.”
Elbert Hubbard

According to Alison Bonds Shapiro,
one kind of humor is based on Love
celebrating the general Joy and goofiness
that comes with being Human.
This is laughing with someone.

                       Where is the average person?

If we can laugh at our mistakes,
and I do mean,
out loud,
we can, in a more positive manner,
effectively take some credit for them,
(here is where you take a bow)
and allow for them to become acceptable
lessons learned on this all too difficult
path of Life.

And you get three guesses
as to who made it so difficult,
and the first two
don’t count!

We are so perfectly and Beautifully
imperfect,
that the result is:
there is simply no one
we can call normal
or average.
(Thank God!)

“Normal
is a setting

I counsel with others,
especially children,
to make at least one mistake
on purpose,
daily.

This creates a highly controlled
learning opportunity.
It admits to our Humanity.
It opens the window
of our awareness.

Children, of all ages,
view it as time for a
great practical joke.

It causes one to
pause to reflect upon
what is really going on.
And ultimately
we learn over the years,
not to take Life so seriously.
Supercilious serious attitudes
lead to stress, strokes,
and striking out.

The lighter side of Life
is also a great adventure
and a broad avenue of opportunity
that may lead to
being on Comedy Central,
finding a new friend,
falling deeply in Love,
or stumbling up to the Altar
and muttering, “I did”
instead of, “I do”.

Creating us
proves to some of us
that God
has a sense of humor.

Perhaps the best indication
is that He created man in His image (Genesis 1:27),
and people are able to perceive
and express humor.

When you think of someone
who has a great sense of humor,
you will usually find this person laughs a lot.
Laughter and a good sense of humor go hand in hand.
And our ability to laugh
comes from God.
It is a great
Gift
.

Abraham Lincoln
used to quip that God had to have a sense of humor
to make us all as we are.

Our God has an absolutely delightful
sense of humor.

“He who sits in the Heavens laughs;
He holds them in derision.”
(Psalm 2:4).

My Dear Friends,
we almost always act like
we are going to survive
this very brief existence.
And the Truth is:
we are precariously
and very briefly perched
upon this Beautiful planet.

.

It opens the window of our awareness.

Live in the moment.

One of my very favorite expressions is:

“Now remember,
We are just a nice normal family”.

You know,
I am always wondering,
where is this normal family?
Where is the average person?

“Normal”
Is Also a Dryer Setting.

We go through Life thinking
I am too short,
Too tall,
Too fat? Too whatever?
Ever get stuck
in a comparison cycle,
pursuing the
unattainable?

Yes we have!

My Friends,
I have news for you:
A NORMAL child
simply does not exist.
That is an illusion.
If not,
please introduce to me to one.
One will be sufficient!
(Now, don’t drag your child up here!
He or she will embarrass you
in a highly abnormal manner.)

“Only ONE person in 6,500
could be credited with achieving true
averageness in every measurable respect.
That person having molded himself into
the nicest, dullest and most proper
freak of normalcy”
for miles around.”

Guy Murchie

Our exceptionality is but one
of one of the things
that make us,
and our lives,
so very interesting
and very, very Beautiful.

We are all a
Modern work of art,
you know,
expensive,
different,
museum quality
and something
no one understands.

.

But can you imagine how dull,
how terminally boring
would Life be
surrounded by a plethora
of normal, average Human beings.
What would we ever talk about?

My Dear Friends,
stop worrying, wondering, and doubting.
Have Faith
that things will work out.
And if they don’t,
well, my fellow Humanoid,
celebrate!
You now have something to talk about,
something to laugh at
and something to think about.

the sort of house I lived in,
or the kind of car I drove,
but the world may be different
because I was important
in the Life of a child.”
Forest E. Witcraft

The past,
if left undenied,
can become a thief.
Don’t let the past steal Today.
Today is your property,
your beautiful Gift from God.

You’ve got to Love this life.
If not,
you are probably
going to hate it.

And how do you Love it?

Well,
it’s actually quite simple:
quit thinking so much about it.
And stop thinking about yourself.
Think about someone else!
That’s called Love.
And when you Love others,
they Love you back.
And Life, my friend,
is good to Live
again.

We all live
for Love.

And if you think deeply about it,
Love is the only thing
worth living for.

Yes,
it is that simple.

Now,
go to bed
in a really dark bedroom.
Your body needs to produce
melatonin
to fight cancer!

And tomorrow,
wake up and do more good
than you ever thought possible
for someone else.
And tomorrow night,
you will sleep well,
and wake up the next day
deeply Loved
by someone else,
and
Happy.

“We know
that for those who Love God
all things work together for good,
for those who are called
according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28

Remember,
turn out all the lights,
It needs to totally dark
when you are asleep
to prevent cancer.

Sleeping while exposed to light at night
causes a dramatic drop
in blood melatonin levels,
setting the stage
for growth and proliferation
of breast cancer cells
and other cancer cells.

I Love You.

Goodnight.

He Experienced A Religious Ecstasy / His Beautiful Child Also Dreams / How To Reprogram Cancer Cells Back To Normal / Cell Phone Radiation Can Cause Cancer

“We come from the Stars …
and to the Stars we return.”

Photographs by Robert Frutos

“I declare
this World is so Beautiful
that I can hardly believe
it exists.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson observed:
“Though we travel the World over
to find the Beautiful,
we must carry it with us
or we find it not.”

Please allow me to share thoughts
of a man I deeply admire.
His writings have
changed many lives, including mine,
and brought about a deep and personal
awareness and precious insights that
could only have come through him
from God.

John Muir
was America’s most famous and influential
naturalist, conservationist, author,
environmental Philosopher,
early advocate of wilderness preservation,
helping to establish Yosemite and Sequoia
National Parks
and co-founder of the Sierra Club.

He experienced in Nature
a Religious Ecstasy.
Before the Majesty of Natural Beauty,
he found himself humble
before the Power of God
who Created it
all.

“When one tugs at a single thing in Nature,
he finds it attached to the rest of the World.”
John Muir

The wilderness in the Human Soul

Muir learned to read
from the Divine Manuscript,
the rocks and the trees.
He came to discover complete Freedom,
and had experiences that
seemed timeless and devoid of space.
He felt his body had no weight.
“Life seemed neither long nor short,” he wrote,
“and we take no more heed to save time
or make haste than do the
trees and stars.”

He entered the Eternal now
and experienced days
that seemed to have
neither end nor beginning.
John discovered an Immortality,
and experienced himself
dissolved into the Landscape.

Everybody
needs Beauty as well as bread,
places to play in and Pray in,
where Nature may heal and give strength
to body and Soul alike.”
John Muir

 God’s first Temples

Muir experienced
the inter-relatedness of all things,
the union of rocks and clouds,
the Humanness of the Landscape,
the wilderness in the Human Soul,
a kinship with the wild Nature
he grew to Love,
a oneness.
One of my favorite thoughts
from John is this:

“A few minutes ago every tree was excited,
bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling,
tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship.
But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent,
their songs never cease.

Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life,
every fiber thrilling like harp strings,
while incense is ever flowing
from the balsam bells and leaves.

No wonder the hills and groves
were God’s first temples,

and the more they are cut down and hewn
into cathedrals and churches,
the farther off and dimmer
seems the Lord himself.”

 The Divine Manuscript

Muir wrote of being struck by
how clean Nature is.
All plants are clean;
all animals are clean.
Of all the living things on the planet,
mankind alone seems dirty.

“The wilderness is a Natural place
to consummate the longings
of the Soul.”

“We are now in the mountains
and they are in us,
kindling enthusiasm,
making every nerve quiver,
filling every pore and cell of us.
Our flesh-and-bone Tabernacle
seems transparent as glass
to the beauty about us,
as if truly an inseparable part of it.”

Humble before the power of God

My Dear Friends,
we are a part
of everything around us.
We are truly
one.
And we are
One with God.

Have I ever felt the way
John Muir describes
his feelings?
Yes,
my Friends,
many times,
daily.

.I feel very deeply
that the greatest Gift
I could ever convey to you
Is the message found
in the writings of
John Muir,

in the Divine Manuscript.

Please discover
who you are,
and why.

Take time
to say a Prayer

Cathedral of God’s Heart.
You will find it
beneath a Sky
filled with a Grace
you cannot deny.

“Somethin’ in the wind has learned my name
And it’s tellin’ me that things are not the same
In the Leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There’s a pleasin’ sense of Happiness for me.
There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That Tomorrow will be just the same
for you and me.”

 The Peace
your precious Heart
longs for
is waiting patiently
for you.
Now you know
where to find it.

I beg of you,
do not wait
too long.

“The Sun shines not on us but in us.
The rivers flow not past, but through us.
Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell
of the substance of our bodies,
making them glide and sing.
The Trees wave and the Flowers bloom
in our bodies as well as our Souls,
and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song
of the rocks in the Heart of the mountains is our song,
our very own,
and sings our
Love.”
John Muir

God.”

Of the depth
Of His Love
For you,

We dream.

While awake,
We dream
Much of the day
Away.
And still
Do not know.

That God dreams,
And the Beauty
Of His dreams
May be found

While they slumber in their beds,

Unconscious for a third
Of our lives,
The Life inside our Dreams
We never fully realize.
And much like our Dreams,
In Life
So many know what they want,
The Life they have never lived,
And may never live.

We walk in the footsteps
Of others.
We learn about Life
From someone,
Someone other
Than the One
Who Loved us enough
To give us
His Very Own
Breath of Life.

Awakening begins with
Hope and Prayer,
And remembering
We are His Dream,
And His Dreamer.

One fancies a Heart like our own must be beating in every crystal and cell. No wonder when we consider that we all have the same Father and Mother.       – John Muir

Every Human being
Has been Created
In the Image of God,
In a Dream.

Perhaps
One day,
We could live the Life
He wants,
And become

In His Infinite Love
For all you are,

Comes to you,
And through you,

With thoughts Serenely Pure,
When our Hearts that beat
Are innocent,
What Blessings He will bring.

My Dear Friends,
these words are
truly Beautiful Jewels:

“So many Hearts I find
broke like yours and mine
Torn by what we’ve done
and can’t undo.

I just want to hold you.
Come on let me hold you
like Bernadette would do.

We’ve been around, we fall, we fly.
We mostly fall, we mostly run
And every now and then we try
to mend the damage
that we’ve done.

Tonight, tonight I just can’t rest
I’ve got this joy
here inside my breast.”

My Dear Friends,
There is a Love
That is Divine,
And it is yours,
And it is mine.

When you awake,
When you are finally awake,
From this Life,
This Dream,
You will find
You are His Dream

In the Heavens Above.

You will be

Restoring normal miRNA levels
may potentially stop cancer growth,
Mayo Clinic researchers have discovered.
(August 25, 2015)
A way to potentially reprogram cancer cells
back to normalcy has been discovered
by researchers on Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus.

The finding, published in Nature Cell Biology,
represents “an unexpected new biology
that provides the code,
the software for turning off cancer,”
says the study’s senior investigator,
Panos Anastasiadis, Ph.D.,
chair of the Department of Cancer Biology
on Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus.

New Study:
Cellphones Really Are Giving You
Cancer

Multiple studies have revealed
that cell phone radiation can cause cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer
classified radio frequency fields ,
including those from cell phones,
as a possible carcinogen in 2011? (source)

The dangers of cell phone use
gained credibility in 2011
when the World Health Organization
admitted that cell phone radiation
may cause cancer.

The statement was made by 31 scientists,
from 14 different countries,
after reviewing evidence.

Top 20 Highest Radiation Cell Phones
(maximum possible SAR “specific absorption rate”
level from phones)

The SAR can be misleading as it measures the maximum radiation a cellphone emits and does not reflect the average amount of radiation it emits. There is accumulating evidence that cellphones that operate on GSM networks emit significantly more radiation than do cellphones operating on CDMA networks.

CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, is the type of cellular network used by the phone companies Verizon and Sprint. GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, is the type used by AT&T and T-Mobile.

The radiation spikes at the beginning of GSM phone calls means that they emit, overall, up to 28 times more radiation than CDMA phones. read more

At that time, I knew him only

My Dear Friends,
no matter how much we learn
about ourselves and our complexities
and that of other Beautiful Living Creations,
scientists have not answered
the truly important question

What is Life?

There are times
when we feel as though
we have lived many Lives,
been to the heights and depths
of Mountains and Valleys,
and never known rest,
never become aware
of the Gifts of so many years,
of the beating Hearts
of so many precious Lives.

My Friends,
we must Live by Faith
to possess all that is truly ours,
ALL
that God has gifted
to us.

“We live by Faith,
not by sight.”
2 Corinthians 5:7

God
controls the whole vastness
of the great Mysteries
of ALL things.

He Abides
with every beat of every Heart,
with every up-lifted cry
of our pleading voice,
with the crash of our fragile emotions,
and with the whirl of the wind
across the shifting sands
of Time.

“Why
do we resist the Mystery
that change brings?

When we get too rigid and inflexible,
rigor mortise of the Soul
sets in.”

Dennis Merritt Jones

There is so much more to Life, than Living.

If
you find yourself exhausted
from the cares and worries
of this Life,
close your tired eyes,
sit motionless for a few moments

and breathe deeply.
Immerse yourself
in a conversation
with your Heavenly Father,
in Prayer.
Go outside of the artificial constructions
of Human Kind.
Go into the Beautiful Cathedral of God,
into His Natural World
of the Great and Vast
Garden of Living Treasures.

Become intensely aware
of all of the Beautiful Life around you,
the breathing leaves
of His Beautiful whispering Trees,
the singing and chattering of Joyful birds,
of the Vibrant Living Earth,
of the Moment
and the Mystery.

There is
so much more
to Life,
than Living.

Speak
to the Majesty
of this Moment
in the Language of the Heart.

Pray
and give Thanks
for the bountiful and Beautiful
Life
we cannot even define.

The power of awareness
  plows a deep furrow
into the Human Heart.

“To one who has Faith,
no explanation is necessary.
To one without Faith,
no explanation is possible.”

That Love might be in your Heart.
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps all your Heart.

Who can say if your love grows

And who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows,
only time.
Who knows?
Only time.”

The Power
of God’s Everlasting Love
is sown deep
into the Human Heart.
It resides
in the valleys
of our fears.
For we are
His deeply Loved
Children.

“We,
by Nature,
don’t want to have to Trust a God
we cannot see or understand,
we are happiest when,
having Trusted Him,
we have found Him Trustworthy.
Doing so at the time
may have seemed imprudent,
but in retrospect
seems at once sage and courageous.”
Seth Barnes

The River of Life
will flow from this Day
into Tomorrow,
and turn our fears and our sorrow
into Joy and laughter.

Such is the Power

of Love.

This moment
is always given to us
to be a redefining moment,
when we may look more deeply
into the Mystery of Life
  and learn how to become
fully aware
of where we are
and what we are doing.

We stand before
an open door
in this and every moment
God grants to us.

Let us open every door
  and step into
a deeper awareness
of God’s Love
for us.

We truly are
Blessed.

We are Truly Loved
by God.

Let us share
His Love.

Coping with the Fear

of COVID-19

The news has petrified us about the possibilities. Here’s how to cope.

Posted Mar 09, 2020 in Psychology Today

Confronting fear leads to a sense of accomplishment and a sense of empowerment, and allows us to feel a little more control over situations. The point of this blog post is not to provide a rationale for fear, but rather to suggest ways in which we can balance our fear by maintaining a sense of well-being during these types of challenging times. Try these self-care tips in the wake of fear:

  • Maintain a calm state of self-awareness and limit the amount of time you watch or listen to the news. It’s important to know what’s going on in the world, but you also need to know when to turn off the TV or stop reading the news and maintain a sense of balance. Tell yourself that being fearful might be causing some chaos in your life.
    .
  • Connect with others. Try to interact with positive-thinking individuals and those who have a good influence on you. These individuals can be friends or even a therapist. Listen to your heart and determine who resonates with your worldview. Studies have shown that loneliness can lead to the stress response, so try not to isolate yourself. With the most recent orders for “Safety in Place,” and lockdown, connecting via email, phone and letter writing is very important to minimize the chance of loneliness.
    .
  • Reduce stress. When stressed, cortisol production is increased. Cortisol helps fight inflammation in the body, but when it’s constantly secreted, then it’s less effective in fighting inflammation and disease. To reduce stress in your life, try maintaining a regular meditation practice, practicing yoga, and incorporating proper breathing techniques into your daily routine.
    .
  • Use humor, which is an excellent way to temper fear. It also helps keep things light and not so intense.
    .
  • Build your immunity. Those with strong immune systems minimize their chances of getting sick, so get proper exercise, eat well, and take the necessary supplements. Also, research has shown that those who get at least seven hours of sleep a night have more resistance to viruses, and thus have fewer side effects.
    .
  • Eat healthy foods. Try to avoid processed foods and sweeteners. Some foods that can contribute to your overall health include citrus fruits, red bell peppers, broccoli, garlic, ginger, spinach, almonds, yogurt, green tea, papaya, kiwi, poultry, sunflower seeds, and shellfish. Also, remember to stay hydrated and minimize alcohol consumption.
    .
  • Practice gratitude. When you’re feeling fearful, try replacing that emotion with an appreciation for all the good in your life. Even when under lockdown, it’s important to be grateful for having a roof over your head and some food in your refrigerator.
    .
  • Maintain a journaling practice. Journaling is a safe place where you can vent about your fears and frustrations. Sometimes writing can help you work through what’s bothering you. It can help you get out of the rabbit hole of negativity about how “awful” everything is. Gratitude journaling is also a powerful practice.
    .
  • Take up a hobby (or more than one). Think about what brings you peace of mind and also gives you pleasure, whether it’s golf, tennis, crafts, games, art, music, writing, or watching movies. Also, reading a good book can open your mind to new ideas and thought processes – especially inspirational memoirs and novels. There are many things you can do in the solitude of your home.
    .
  • Consider hypnosis. This can help eliminate negative thought patterns and beliefs. (It’s more successful for some than for others.)
    .
  • Practice good hygiene. Use hand sanitizers of proper hand washing techniques when in contact with anyone or anything outside your home. Hand washing is critical for disease prevention and spread, especially before eating and during food preparation. It’s important to wash for at least 20 seconds. Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing, and if you do have to cough or sneeze, do so into the inside of your elbow. In general, viruses can live on surfaces for at least 24 hours, so viruses can be easily passed among family members. Make sure to frequently wipe down surfaces.

In summary,
accept the fact that this strain of coronavirus is part of our existence now and the numbers seem to be increasing by the minute. This virus is very contagious and it’s symptoms more serious than many in the past. While dealing with the difficulties of this time, It’s important to affirm the positive and remember what is good and powerful in our lives. Surrendering can bring about a sense of peace and calm; and in doing so, we’re empowering ourselves and not allowing fear to control us.
