The Real Reason We Are Here / 15 Ways to Live, and Not Merely Exist / 2020-21 School Calendar

Neuroscientists believe
that hearing another person laugh
triggers mirror neurons in a region of the brain
that makes listeners feel as though
they are actually laughing themselves.

To Shine a Light of Hope.

As we inhabit our Sphere
of awareness,
dimly lit or unaware,
each of us reflects
from time rare
to almost forgotten,
upon our purpose
far or near,
on the deeper meaning of Life,
the reason we are here.birdYou
alone
,

among all the precious
Living Things in the
Universe,
possess the singular ability
to save the Life
of someone known
but to God,
and
desperately in need
of Love.

in the Life of another,
is to raise from the dead
a Life lost
in the horrible abyss of
apathy.

God
endowed each of us
with precious and amazing Gifts
to deeply touch
the Hearts and minds
of others.

” If some Lives form a perfect circle,
others take shape in ways we cannot predict

Loss has been a part of my Journey.
But it has also shown me
what is precious.
So has a Love for which
I can only be grateful.”

Yes,
you are here
for a reason:
to shine a Light
of Hope,
to shower those around you
with the Blessings
of God’s Abundant Love,
reflected and refracted through the prism

My Dear Friends,
the reason you are here
has nothing
to do with
you.

You and I
are here for
Love.

We are in this small space,
on this tiny planet,
in this one sliver of Time,
to open our Hearts
and let the Infinite Love
of God
flow through us,
the Love
that sparkles in your eyes,
the Love shared
with your warm smiles,
charitable thoughts
and giving
and forgiving
ways.

You
are the greatest Gift
God can bestow
upon someone
in need of His Love.
To open your Heart
is to unwrap
this magical, mystical Gift
of Spirit
from Above.

Only Love turns darkness into Light.

“How often we turn our bodies

as we carry our Hearts around

We hold back our Love

Why are we so selfish
with something of endless supply?

We can turn our bodies into prisms
allowing our sunshine

Like a rainbow,
Love
bends, radiates, and stretches,

giving Hope to all it reaches.
Love penetrates the darkness

15 Ways to Live and Not Merely Exist

As Jack London once said, “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.”  Far too often we travel through Life on autopilot, going through the motions, accepting what is, and having every day pass like the one before it.  Everything seems relatively normal and comfortable, except that constant twitch in the back of your mind that’s saying, “It’s time to make some changes.

Here are 15 simple suggestions for those who want to break free from the mold and truly live more of their life – to experience it and enjoy it to the fullest, instead of settling for a mere existence.

  1. Appreciate the great people and things in your life. – Sometimes we don’t notice the things others do for us until they stop doing them.  Don’t be like that.  Be grateful for what you have, who loves you, and who cares for you.  You’ll never know how much they mean to you until the day they’re no longer beside you.  Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you.  Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it to live.  Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
    .
  2. Ignore other people’s negativity. – If you allow people to make more withdrawals than deposits in your life, you will be out of balance and in the negative before you know it.  Ignore unconstructive, hurtful commentary.  No one has the right to judge you.  They may have heard your stories, but they didn’t feel what you were going through.  You do not have control over what others say; but you do have control over whether or not you allow them to say these things to you.  You alone can deny their poisonous words from invading your Heart and mind.
    .
  3. Forgive those who have hurt you. – I forgive people, but that doesn’t mean I trust them.  I just don’t have time to hate people who hurt me, because I’m too busy loving people who love me.  The first to apologize is the bravest.  The first to forgive is the strongest.  The first to move forward is the happiest.  Be brave.  Be strong.  Be happy.  Be free.
    .
  4. Be who you really are. – If you’re lucky enough to have something that makes you different from everybody else, don’t change.  Uniqueness is priceless.  In this crazy world that’s trying to make you like everyone else, find the courage to keep being your awesome self.  And when they laugh at you for being different, laugh back at them for being the same.  It takes a lot of courage to stand alone, but it’s worth it.  Being YOU is worth it!
    .
  5. Choose to listen to your inner voice. Life is a courageous journey or nothing at all.  We cannot become who we want to be by continuing to do exactly what we’ve been doing.  Choose to listen to your inner voice, not the jumbled opinions of everyone else.  Do what you know in your heart is right for YOU.  It’s your road, and yours alone.  Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.  And be sure to appreciate every day of your life.  Good days give you happiness, bad days give you experience, and the worst days give you the best lessons.  Read Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No.
    .
  6. Embrace change and enjoy your life as it unfolds. – The hardest part about growing is letting go of what you were used to, and moving on with something you’re not.  Sometimes you have to stop worrying, wondering, and doubting, and have faith that things will work out.  Laugh at the confusion, live consciously in the moment, and enjoy your life as it unfolds.  You might not end up exactly where you intended to go, but eventually you will arrive precisely where you need to be.
    .
  7. Choose your relationships wisely. – The best relationships are not just about the good times you share, they’re also about the obstacles you go through together, and the fact that you still say “I love you” in the end.  And loving someone isn’t just about saying it every day, it’s showing it every day in every way.  Relationships must be chosen wisely.  Don’t rush love.  Wait until you truly find it.  Don’t let loneliness drive you back into the arms of someone you know you don’t belong with.  Fall in love when you’re ready, not when you’re lonely.  A great relationship is worth waiting for.
    .
  8. Recognize those who Love you. – The most memorable people in your life will be the ones who loved you when you weren’t very Loveable Pay attention to who these people are in your life, and Love them back, even when they aren’t acting Loveable.
    .
  9. Love yourself too. – If you can love children, in spite of the messes they make; your mother, in spite of her tendency to nag; your father, even though he’s too opinionated; your sibling, even though she’s always late; your friend, even though he often forgets to return what he borrows, then you know how to love imperfect people, and can surely love yourself.
    .
  10. Do things your future self will thank you for. – What you do every day matters more than what you do every once in a while.  What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.  Make sure it’s worthwhile.
    .
  11. Be thankful for all the troubles you don’t have. – There are two ways of being rich: One is to have all you want, the other is to be satisfied with what you have.  Accept and appreciate things now, and you’ll find more happiness in every moment you live.  Happiness comes when we stop complaining about the troubles we have and offer thanks for all the troubles we don’t have.  And remember, you have to fight through some bad days to earn the best days of your life.  Read The How of Happiness.
    .
  12. Leave enough time for fun. – Sometimes you need to take a few steps back to see things clearly.  Never let your life become so filled with work, your mind become so crammed with worry, or your heart become so jammed with old hurts or anger, that there’s no room left in them for fun, for awe, or for joy.
    .
  13. Enjoy the little things in life. – The best things in life are free.  There is absolute joy and wonder to be had in the simplest of moments.  Watching the sunset over the horizon or spending time with a family member. Enjoy the little things, because one day you may look back and discover they were the big things.
    .
  14. Accept the fact that the past is not today. – Don’t let the past steal your present and future from you.  You might not be proud of all the things you’ve done in the past, but that’s okay.  The past is not today.  The past cannot be changed, forgotten, or erased.  It can only be accepted.  We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past.  But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.
    .
  15. Let go when you must. – It’s not always about trying to fix something that’s broken.  Some relationships and situations just can’t be fixed.  If you try to force them back together, things will only get worse.  Sometimes it’s about starting over and creating something better.  Strength shows not only in the ability to persist, but in the ability to start over again with a smile on your face and passion in your Heart.

Love Will Rise One Day / Lowest Radiation Cell Phones To Prevent Cancer of the Brain / 2020-21 School Calendar

Our World
is crying out for
understanding.

In our more innocent Time,
when Life was simple
and filled with childhood times
and Love was to be found
every Day,
when the Music of the moment
could touch our Hearts,
and we would play
and Pray,
Life
was good.
.
Many
of our precious memories

are so wholesome.
Just Love them,
for after all these many, many years –
we still are swept away
by the soothing melody
of moments
meant to stay.
Life
should be Lived
moment by moment,
not
day by day.

“Every moment
is a fresh beginning.”

– T. S.  Elliott

There is always a place
your Heart
can return to.
The essence of
Life
stays with us.

pure energy.
It cannot be

no gentle

will rise again
one day.

In these Times
of loneliness and uncertainty,

the Beautiful Reflections of Life remind us
that everything will be okay.
Because,

we have never lost
our way.

Every night in our Dreams,
  we see,
we hear,
we feel,

and Life goes
on,
even in the depths
of darkness,
and the decay
of Day.

But,
we can feel
the power of God

within.
A feeling

so powerful
it cannot be denied.
His Precious Words

as we come closer
to His Truth

It is a form of Love that becomes
all the more complete
as it is turned towards others;
that is why happiness is within everyone’s reach,

Search your Heart
and you will search
no more.
And then,
there will be just two types of people
left –
those who have fallen in Love with you,
and those you have yet to meet.

How much of God’s Grace

appearing so tender and powerful,
and filled with Love
at the same time.

We Beautiful people,
we Children of God,
possess Angelic Qualities.

When the sky cries for you,
the Land is Blessed,
and Life
goes on.
And when you cry,
the Love in your Heart
is a Fountain
of Blessing

for someone in this Life
far beyond Beauty,
beyond
what may be told.
and is foretold

by the Love
of God.

God,
will always care,
wherever you may be,
He will be there.

Fantasy, Moon, Girl, Night, Bank, Light

The Magic in your Heart
may lie across a Sea
of tears
you cry
for those
you meet
and truly Love.

Only
the Human Heart knows,
how Love
and pain
may become one
and the same.

Goodnight.

through everything,
your pain can become your greatest ally
in your Life’s search for
Love and Wisdom.”

Gifts, Packages, Made, Loop, Packet Loop

There are so many Treasures
we find in the Magic
of this Moment
in Time.

The Gifts
given to us
by our Father in Heaven Above,
abound all around.
.
Listen easy,
and you can hear God Calling.

Walk barefoot,
and the ground
won’t pay any mind.
Look up,

while you are
standing in the rain.
The feeling

you will have
is the knowing,
that the drops that fall
did flow
in many a vein.

You
and this Beautiful World
are one,
the very same.

Time, Timer, Clock, Watch, Hour

Walk
the Fields of Green,
and know Life
is but a Dream,
come True.

So Blessed,
so very Loved are we,
by our Father
in Heaven Above.

And the Time
is our Time,
in the precious moments
that catch us feeling,
while saying nothing,
and basking in the Sun.

With Love,
there is no measure
of Time.

Love,
is the only good
to be.

Love is a Present
from God to you and me
and all Human Kind,
a Gift
given by our Savior,
to savor.

My Dear Friends,
what happens
when we start to Live
as our True self,
the Truly Loving
ME?

The sounds
of silence,
become moments
that deepen the poignancy
of the Beautiful haunting Song
that is Life,
that is Love.

Mary Hopkin “For All My Days”

“For all my days in many ways
I’ll think of all I’ve lived to see
The mountains high, clouds in the sky
I thank the Lord for sharing them with me.
The summer’s glow, the winter’s snow
Are not to me just scenery
When tree tops sway I long to say
Oh thank you Lord for sharing them with me.
Life I believe, Love we receive
We shouldn’t take too casually.
For all my days in many ways.
I’ll thank the Lord for sharing them with me.”

Love
captures the very Essence
of Life.

“To all the Faithful or all those who find their Joy
from their own souls,
it reminds us that life is good,
the Universe is Beautiful
and we have a right to be here.
When we share this with our families, communities
and strangers, without prejudice,
we shine just a little better.
I am grateful.”

Allan Edwards

The Fountain of God’s Truth
is revealed by Love
in all its Glory.
Your Human Heart
can drink at this Fountain
of Joy and Eternal Beauty.

The answers
we seek
are not separate
from the problems.

 The solutions
lie in the understanding
of God’s Love for
you.

The answers are not
outside the problem.
They lie in wait
inside
your Human Heart.

From innumerable complexities
we must grow
 in simplicity.
We must become simple
in our inward Life
and in our outward need.

The end is the beginning of all things.
The answers to our needs
are suppressed and hidden,
awaiting to be released
through the rhythm of
Prayer,
and Communion
with God.

Happiness
comes when we are doing something
because we really
Love to do it

not because it rewards us
with the illusion
of something material.

God is Love,
and Love is God.

Love
cannot be defined or described

by the Human mind.
Love is Eternal,
it is what is truly real,
immeasurable,
and
the answer.

Peace
is of the Heart,
not of the mind.
To know inner Peace,
we must find inner Beauty,
for in understanding Beauty,
we know Love.

Through a narrow window
we can see only part of the sky,
not the whole vastness and magnificence
of God’s Beautiful Blessing.

Look
into all
that your Heart
can be.

And,
the last farewell,
will be a Greeting.
Just wait
and see.

Goodnight.

“Please don’t wake me up too late.
Tomorrow comes and I will not be late.
Late, today when it becomes tomorrow
I will leave to go away.”

Maintaining a Sense of Humor to Cope

Man Laughing With Father During Family BBQ
Hinterhaus Productions / Getty Images

A sense of humor can be an amazing line of defense when it comes to coping with stress. Unfortunately, stress is inevitable and you can’t eliminate it, despite your best efforts. You can, however, better prepare yourself for stress with several coping techniques.

Developing a sense of humor about life’s challenges is a great place to start. A sense of humor will help you to build resilience to stress as well as improve your overall physical and emotional health. It will also enable you to:

  • Bond with others
  • Look at things in a different way
  • Normalize your experience
  • Keep your relationships strong

Luckily, it’s not too hard to develop a healthy sense of humor — but it does require a bit of practice. Here are a few ways to find the funny in Life and better cope with stress.

Start With a Smile

Even if you fake a smile (making the physical shape with your mouth), it can lead to increased happiness (not just looking happier). This is because the act of smiling (real or fake) causes your body to release feel-good endorphins. Plus, a fake smile tends to lead to a genuine one — and this means that laughter will come more easily, and the stress will melt more readily.

Take a Step Back

When you’re in the middle of a difficult situation, it can seem overwhelming. Taking a step back, however, and viewing your situation as an observer can help you see your situation with a new lens. This is called reframing — and it works.

Value the Extremes

If your situation seems ridiculously frustrating, recognize the potential humor in just how ridiculously frustrating and annoying it is. In your imagination, take the situation to an extreme that becomes even more ridiculous until you find yourself amused.

For example, if you are waiting in a long line at the store, imagine that hours pass, then days, visualizing loved ones visiting you in your new home or holding your child’s birthday party in aisle seven…you get the picture.

Recruit Funny Buddies

Social support is a crucial part of stress management.3 Find a friend or group of friends with whom you can share your frustrations and challenges, and laugh about them in the process. Even when your friends are not there, you can lighten your mood by thinking about the retelling that will come later.

Make It a Game

You can have a “most annoying boss” contest with your friends, or try to count how many times the same potentially frustrating event happens in a day. (“I was cut off in traffic seven times today — I’m almost up to 10.”) This works well for predictable or repetitive annoying situations that you can’t control; you can begin to view them in their own special way instead of letting them unnerve you.

Watch Funny Shows and Movies

One of the reasons that sitcoms are so popular is that many of them take somewhat universal situations that people find frustrating and push them a little further to show the silly side of it all.

Realizing that some universally annoying situations are actually funny, can help you endure them with a smile — even if it’s a wry or ironic smile.

Read Funny Books

Reading humorous interpretations of Life can help you maintain a light-hearted point-of-view and find your own style of seeing the world in a different light. Look for an author skilled at finding the humor in Life events, ranging from annoying to upsetting or even tragic. Some suggestions: Dave Barry, David Sedaris, or Jerry Seinfeld.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Laughter yoga, which combines laughter and intentional yogic breathing (pranayama), is a great way to release stress and get some more giggles into your day.  If this type of class is not available to you, there are other types of yoga and relaxation strategies (meditation, tai chi, deep breathing) to minimize stress so you can build your resilience and your sense of humor.

How Do You Grade a School? / “He Who Saves One Life … Saves The World Entire.” / 30 Things You Had No Idea Could Cause Cancer / 2020-21 School Calendar

Baby, Newborn, Baby Feet, Feet, Small

Yes! The dessert must be smaller than the child.

Yes!
The dessert and the drink MUST be smaller
than the Child.

How do you grade a school?
Well, I really don’t think you should be grading a school or anything else. Remember, if you become essentially non-judgmental, you can reap the rewards of filling your Life with something called Joy.

“Judge not,
that you be not judged.
For with the judgment you pronounce
you will be judged,
and with the measure you use
it will be measured to you.”

M
atthew 7:1-2

Kids can grade a school, if they are so declined.
And our children are getting to be more and more inclined,
physically, as technology disables their minds and bodies.
Their thought processes have become so linear,
that they tend to attach a letter grade to everything.
And thus,
many avenues of
Joy
are prejudged and avoided.

Perhaps non-graded schools
should be the only ones
receiving a grade.
But then, they become graded.
What non-sense.
.
I read about schools that are pseudo-assessed
and wonder about the statistical probabilities involved.
We are all familiar with the one term paper
that was submitted to different teachers
which resulted in grades ranging from an A+ to an F
(in the same High School).

And what if you get the worst teachers
one year in one school
and have the best teachers the next year
in another school.
Can you really compare schools?
Or is Mrs. Anderson correct
in observing that a school is just as good

Diesel Exhaust and Cancer
from the American Cancer Society

(Here is another very good reason
to buy an all electric vehicle.)

What is diesel exhaust?

Diesel is a type of fuel derived from crude oil. Diesel fuel is used in most large engines, including those used in many trucks, buses, trains, construction and farm equipment, generators, ships, and in some cars.

Diesel exhaust is made up of 2 main parts: gases and soot (particles). Each of these, in turn, is made up of many different substances.

  • The gas portion of diesel exhaust is mostly carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur oxides, and hydrocarbons, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
  • The soot (particulate) portion of diesel exhaust is made up of particles such as carbon, organic materials (including PAHs), and traces of metallic compounds.

Both the gases and the soot of diesel exhaust contain PAHs.

Exhaust from diesel engines brings a complex mixture of soot and gases to roadways, cities, farms, and other places. Health concerns about diesel exhaust relate not only to cancer, but also to other health problems such as lung and heart diseases.

How are people exposed to diesel exhaust?

People can be exposed to diesel exhaust at work, around the home, or while traveling mainly by breathing in the soot and gases. Diesel exhaust exposure is widespread in the modern world.

The amount of diesel exhaust people are exposed to varies greatly. Measuring these exposures is not easy because diesel exhaust is chemically complex and many parts of it are also found in a lot of other sources. This is a major challenge when trying to study the health effects of diesel exhaust.

At work

People with some of the highest work exposures include truck drivers, toll booth workers, miners, forklift drivers and other heavy machinery operators, railroad and dock workers, and garage workers and mechanics. Some farm workers also spend a lot of time around diesel exhaust.

Where you live and play

People can also be exposed to diesel exhaust where they live and play, although this is typically at lower levels than in the workplace. Exposures are highest where diesel traffic is heaviest, such as along major highways and in cities.

While traveling in a vehicle

Exposure to diesel exhaust may be higher, especially when traveling on roads with heavier truck or bus traffic. Commuting for work is a potential source of diesel exhaust exposure for many people. One particular area of concern is children’s exposures to diesel exhaust and other pollutants while riding in school buses, as the buses themselves typically run on diesel fuel.

Does diesel exhaust cause cancer?

Two main types of studies are used to try to figure out if a substance or exposure causes cancer.

  • Studies in labs: In these studies, animals are exposed to a substance (often in very large doses) to see if it causes tumors or other health problems. Researchers might also expose normal cells in a lab dish to the substance to see if it causes the types of changes seen in cancer cells. It’s not always clear if the results from these types of studies will apply to humans, but lab studies are a good way to find out if a substance might possibly cause cancer.
  • Studies in people: Another type of study looks at cancer rates in different groups of people. Such a study might compare the cancer rate in a group exposed to a substance to the cancer rate in a group not exposed to it, or compare it to the cancer rate in the general population. But sometimes it can be hard to know what the results of these studies mean, because many other factors might affect the results.

In most cases neither type of study provides enough evidence on its own, so researchers usually look at both lab-based and human studies when trying to figure out if something causes cancer.

Results of studies in the lab

In studies of cells done in lab dishes, diesel exhaust (as soot or chemical extracts) has been found to cause changes in the cells’ DNA. These types of changes are usually needed for cancer to develop, although not all substances that cause DNA changes also cause cancer.

Several studies have found that long-term, heavy exposure to diesel exhaust can cause lung cancer in lab animals such as rats.

Results of studies in people

It’s not easy to study the possible health effects of diesel exhaust in people. First, it is often very hard to correctly define and measure the level of exposure. It can also be hard to account for the other cancer risk factors that people exposed to diesel exhaust might have, such as smoking.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer is the major cancer thought to be linked to diesel exhaust. Several studies of workers exposed to diesel exhaust have shown small but significant increases in risk of lung cancer. Men with the heaviest and most prolonged exposures, such as railroad workers, heavy equipment operators, miners, and truck drivers, have been found to have higher lung cancer death rates than unexposed workers. Based on the number of people exposed at work, diesel exhaust may pose a substantial health risk.

The possible link between lung cancer and exposure to diesel exhaust outside the workplace has not been studied extensively.

Other cancers

Several studies have looked for possible links between diesel exhaust and other cancers, including cancers of the bladder, larynx (voice box), esophagus, stomach, and pancreas. Studies have also looked for links to blood system cancers such as lymphomas and leukemias (including childhood leukemia). While some studies have found possible links, others have not. More research is needed to show if diesel exhaust exposure is linked to any of these other cancers.

What expert agencies say about diesel exhaust

Several national and international agencies study substances in the environment to determine if they can cause cancer. (A substance that causes cancer or helps cancer grow is called a carcinogen.) The American Cancer Society looks to these organizations to evaluate the risks based on evidence from laboratory, animal, and human research studies.

Some of these expert agencies have classified diesel exhaust as to whether it can cause cancer, based largely on the possible link to lung cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Its major goal is to identify causes of cancer. IARC classifies diesel engine exhaust as “carcinogenic to humans,” based on sufficient evidence that it is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer. IARC also notes that there is “some evidence of a positive association” between diesel exhaust and bladder cancer.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) is formed from parts of several different US government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The NTP has classified exposure to diesel exhaust particulates as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen,” based on limited evidence from studies in humans (mainly linking it to lung cancer) and supporting evidence from lab studies.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), an electronic database that contains information on human health effects from exposure to various substances in the environment. The EPA classifies diesel exhaust as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is part of the CDC that studies exposures in the workplace. NIOSH has determined that diesel exhaust is a “potential occupational carcinogen.”

(For more information on the classification systems used by these agencies, see Known and Probable Human Carcinogens.)

Can I reduce my exposure to diesel exhaust?

Diesel exhaust can cause health problems and can most likely increase the risk of lung cancer (and possibly other cancers).

Since most people’s exposure is from exhaust near highways and other roads, government regulations may be as important as personal choices in limiting exposure to potentially harmful chemicals in diesel exhaust. For example, as a result of EPA regulations and improvements in technology, new diesel engines give off much lower amounts of certain chemicals than older engines. Still, it’s not yet clear how much this might lower the risks, and many older diesel engines are still in use, so it makes sense to avoid exposure whenever possible.

At work

If you are exposed to diesel exhaust at work, there are ways to reduce or prevent exposures. Some of these measures can also help protect you from other chemical exposures that are likely to happen in the workplace.

If you work in or around vehicles that run on diesel fuel, you might be able to limit the amount of time you spend near engines while they are running. Limiting the time spent near idling engines may help lower your exposure to fumes.

Talk with your employer to be sure that you are protected adequately. Personal protective equipment, such as respirators, may be a key part of a workplace protective program. If needed, engineering changes, such as ventilating the exhaust away from where you breathe, can also be important.

For more information on preventing or reducing workplace exposures at your job, consult your company’s safety and health manager. If needed, you can get additional assistance from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the government agency responsible for enforcing workplace safety.

Where you live and play

If you are exposed to diesel exhaust fumes in your environment, you can take some of the same precautions. For example, try to avoid or limit spending time near large sources of diesel exhaust, such as near trucks and buses. Commuting to and from work exposes many people to possible sources of diesel exhaust, whether they are in a car or on some type of public transportation. For some people, working from home (telecommuting or teleworking) might be an option to lower their exposure, as well as to save money on commuting expenses.

On a governmental level, regulations such as the Clean Air Act and programs such as the EPA’s National Clean Diesel Campaign are designed to reduce diesel emissions from trucks and other large engines, lowering public exposure to diesel exhaust.

Another important program is Clean School Bus USA. Children can be exposed to diesel exhaust during school bus travel or when standing near running school buses outside of school. Clean School Bus USA brings together partners from business, education, transportation, and public-health organizations to reduce children’s exposure to bus-related air pollutants by aiming to:

  • Reduce unnecessary school bus idling
  • Replace older buses with newer, less-polluting buses
  • Upgrade existing buses with technologies to reduce their emissions
