Between the Lines of Life / Your Foolproof Guarantee to Happiness / Sept. 3 (Tuesday) is the First Day of Fall Semester

“No problem can be solved
by the same consciousness
that created it.”
Albert Einstein

The World
is filled with more
Beauty
than we have time
on this Earth
to see,
or feel,
or taste,
or ever know
real or surreal.
.

This Beauty
is of the material
and
the Ethereal
stunning landscapes
endeared to us
and filled with still-Life,
animated
by the Will of God.

Nature splashes
elegant spectrums
of rich, vibrant and evolving colors,
textures, odors and sensations.
They are Loving invitations
for us to explore
the Beauty of God’s World.

Surrounded
by Oceans of Life,
we find all Living Creatures
are one contiguous Body.
All
are essential for becoming
who we are.

The Story of
Mankind
is truly the Story
of us
all.
.
“For the Beauty of the Earth,
For the Beauty of the skies,
For the Love which from our birth
Over and around us lies,
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of Praise
For the Beauty of the hour,
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale
And tree and flower,
Sun and moon and stars of light.
Lord of all to Thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of Praise.
………………John Rutter

.My Dear Friends,
the Story of Love
is written
between
the lines of
Life.

And the most Loving Story,
the most Beautiful Love Story
ever told,
is in the Scripture of the
Holy Bible.
The molecular structure,
of every Word,
on every Page,
and of every Thought we take captive
from the Knowledge and Wisdom
of God,
like the Human Heart itself,
reveals Love.

My Friend,
we are never trapped
within the Truth,
only set Free.

God’s aim
is that we be transformed,
Sanctified,
freed by the Truth
of his Revealed Word.
(John 8:32; 17:17)

Let your fears
subside.
Like the Moon,
we go through phases
of emptiness,
to feel full
again.

The colors
of our dreams,
fall like leaves
from the Trees.
But
they fall to
the precious Earth,
to be reborn
and give birth.

“Knowing the Truth
will set one at Liberty –
free
from sin,

free from condemnation,
and free from death.”
– Romans 6:22; 8:1-2

To Walk
in the Light
of God’s Love
is the see the Truth,
to view the
World
as God wants you
to see.

Love Is A Choice.

God gave us free will.
We must
choose to Love.

In Loving one another,
we choose
to help
those that are less fortunate.
We choose Light over dark,
Eternal Life
over death.

The River of Life
is wide,
the Ocean deep.
But the waters
will divide
with Promises to keep.
And if
in your Life,
the rain is falling,
a Rainbow can reflect
off the walls
of your precious
Heart.

The sweetest Flower
of your Life
is yet to
Bloom.
.
Goodnight.

Your Foolproof Guarantee to Happiness
by Bill High
read more
We spend most of our lives waiting for our “when.” When I get that promotion.  When I get that new house. When I get the kids in preschool. When I get the kids off to college. When I win the lottery. And so it goes. The idea is that whenever I reach my “when,” then I’ll be happy.

But there is in fact a guaranteed foolproof way to happiness. It comes without regard to how much money you have or where you live. Curious?

There are two new published works [1] coming out of a five year intensive study from the University of Notre Dame – The Science of Generosity Initiative. Here are the findings:

  1. While people would assume that getting things for ourselves would make us happy, it doesn’t.
  2. To the contrary generosity is “positively associated with greater happiness” (defining generosity as regular practices of giving – whether through time or money).
  3. 4 out of 10 Americans who say they give 10% of their income report they are “very happy.” Whereas those who don’t give 10% report a remarkable 10% decline in happiness.
  4. Moreover, the study demonstrated that those who are generous are statistically more likely to be physically healthy, emotionally healthy, and have a greater purpose in life.

The researchers note: “…practices of generosity—such as financial giving, volunteering and relational and neighborly generosity—have the capacity to shape people in the processes of human formation over time.” Or perhaps stated more plainly, “People actually grow by giving themselves away.”

Want to be happy?  Prescription:  generosity.

“I am entirely certain
that twenty years from now
we will look back at education
as it is practiced in most schools today
and wonder how we could tolerate
anything so primitive.”

12 of the best supplements to fight cancer
by Chris Woollams

Certain bioactive compounds, found in foods, are known to have strong epigenetic (cancer correcting) benefits. Supplements concentrate those benefits.

Dr. Young S. Kim of the National Cancer Institute studied Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) which lie at the heart of cancers. She showed in her 2012 research that a poor diet could help CSCs re-grow into a full tumour again after chemotherapy had reduced it by even 70 per cent. However, she also showed that certain bioactive compounds could prevent this re-growth. She talked of suforaphanes, curcumin, pipeline, vitamins A and E, genistein, theanine, choline, EGCG from green tea and others and she went on to add that you could obtain from quality supplements. Who are we to argue?

Although European and American research has shown a ’small but significant’ prevention factor (of about 7 per cent), we are not going to recommend you take a multivitamin and mineral if you already have the disease. Why? because the vitamins are usually synthetic and deficient, and the minerals include iron, which is known to help cancer cells thrive.

We think there are much stronger compounds to take:

1: FISH OILS

The number 1 supplement*: Long chain omega 3 is essential for cellular health, control of local inflammation, longevity and much, much more. Research shows supplementation, because it is daily and dose-controlled, actually provides more benefit than eating oily fish. Fish oils reduce the risk of cachexia, and can reduce polyps, the precursors to colorectal cancer.

2: SELENIUM

Helps displace heavy metals from the body. Anti-oxidant mineral recognised more and more as essential in the fight against cancer; for example, German research shows it lowers prostate cancer risk.

3: VITAMIN E

Powerful immune system booster. But take a natural form that ideally combines all 4 tocopherols and all 4 tocotrienols. You simply cannot eat the daily quantities shown to be effective in scientific studies.

4: CHLORELLA

Rather than take vitamin A, go for superfood chlorella. People simply do not eat enough ’greens’, and chlorella is a ’super-green’. Wonderful source of both natural cis- and trans-beta-carotene, minerals and vitamin B-12, especially important if you employ a meat-free diet. This is how to get your vitamin A; your body will make what it wants from beta-carotene.

5: VITAMIN D

The number 1 supplement*. If you cannot get a couple of hours in the sunshine every day, you should consider supplementation of 5000IUs, as recommended by Harvard medical School. This vitamin is actually a hormone and has been shown to activate the immune system, reduce the risk of cancer and even correct cancer cells in research studies.

6: COENZYME Q10

Research shows antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-cancer benefits  levels in tissues decline as you age. Essential to your mitochondria, US research clearly shows you can recapture the levels of your youth by supplementation.  Max 50 mgs a day.  Above is wasted.

“At last, the definitive book on a diet to fight cancer, backed by real research” Mrs BS DevonClick here to read about it.

7: GRAPE SEED EXTRACT

Shown in the American VITAL study to be the top anti-oxidant commonly available. It is an OPC, and Pine Bark Extract (another OPC but not in the research study) may be even better.

8: CURCUMIN

The Number 1 supplement* equal with vitamin D and fish oils. Research shows a variety of health benefits; an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory, this spice (Turmeric) seems to play a strong role in a number of anti-cancer pathways, and in other illnesses too. Prof. Aggarwal of MD Anderson claims he does not know a cancer it does not have a positive effect against. Take with olive oil and black pepper (pipeline) for maximum absorption.

9: B COMPLEX

B Vitamins are essential for correct cellular division and replication apart from playing a role in the nervous system and many of the senses. A pre-cursor to diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer has been shown to be the build up of Homocystein levels in the body. B Vitamins can keep this under control. Normally your gut bacteria MAKE your B vitamins (if you feed them fibrous foods). But after antibiotics and chemo, your gut bacteria will not be functioning properly.

10: RESVERATROL

Seems to play a prevention role in everything from dementia to strokes to cancer. It is now know to act as a pro drug with the CYP1B1 gene in cancer cells. The gene turns it in to picetannol whig kills the cancer cell. Research is coming thick and fast on this natural compound found in organic red grape skins.

11. MODIFIED CITRUS PECTIN

Again, new research abounds on the abilities of this compound to block the ’velcro patches’ on the outside of cancer cells, reducing their abilities to stick to each other and to new tissues. This reduces metastases.

12. INDOLE 3 CARBINOL

I3C can convert aggressive oestradiol into a safer sister, and even modify oestrogen receptor sites on cells (much like Tamoxifen) and prevent dangerous oestrogens binding there. But it also works against non-oestrogenic cancers via the p27 pathway. Research shows clear benefits in Triple Negative Breast Cancer
It is important that you look for a source of naturally-sourced supplements. Many cheaper products are synthetic and limited in their content. Some research studies have indicated such synthetic products have dubious abilities. If you have already decided to supplement, you may want to see what supplements are available on www.ournaturalselection.com (in the UK) who supply all natural products.

The Best of Living is Life / Why Kids Need to Play / Sept. 3 (Tuesday) is the First Day of Fall Semester

This fleeting
trace in Time,
can become like a Dream
you are never really sure
you had.

My Dear Friends,
we are all
where we have been.
We are
there.

And as we awake
from the Dream of Life,
we may realize
the best of Living
is Life,
when Life
is turned into
Song.

The World
you are going to make,
is but a dream away.
But there is no need
to re-write the Story,
replace the Stars,
say
the World is not
ours.

How can
your World never be
enough,
when the Tide
of God’s Moon,
and the Light of His Sun
at noon,
you simply did not
see.

You
are
the World

to someone you Love.
Everything
your World could be,
is on the other side
of where you
reside,
in another Reality,
in a Dream
in which someone Lives,
when they
Dream of you.

Go
where you have
never been before.
When all
that is Real
is created in the
Mind,
and of every
kind,
what you think
is
what the World
will be.

As our Lives
spill into each other,
we can turn Time
into Flowers.

       Turn Time into Flowers.

Every Story
is a
Love Story.
But a Story
must be told,
to be.
And to say
nothing
of your Love,
is a toxic embrace
in all its abandon
and savagery.
.
Through many deaths
have we endured,
in moments
never shared,
in words
never dared,
to say:
I Love You.
.
When
Life is turned into Song,
the memory
of someone we Love
breathes the air
we breathe.
For a Song
never sung,
none higher
in cost
is ever paid.
.
The essential Sacredness
of all things,
includes you.
.
The Oceans
of our Hearts
are drained
by Rivers of Tears,
as we depart
from our Loved Ones
with no word
of Loving farewell.

Loving words
never birthed
are forever
never born,
and infinite
in the moments
they are never
to be.

Pointless
is the period
which begins the
sentence,
and never ends that
which has
no beginning.
To never begin
is an end
of beginning.

Life
can be
much like that.

But,
if I decide
to be,
to really become
part
of the bountiful Beauty
that is all around me,
with God
by my side,
who can stop
me?

Be happy
that there are people
who are truly alive on the same Earth
that you walk on every day.
They are Gifts
sent from God.

“Crying
is just another part
of being Human. Gerald Costello
Cry away the Heartaches….
for it’s good for you.”
  Gerald Costello

How many sorrows
do you hide
in this World of illusion?
When you open your Heart
you will discover
something you are longing to find:
the Miracle of Love
to take away your pain
and give you Life
again.

Goodnight.

Why Kids Need to Play

It is so important for kids to have unstructured, free play time. In these days of schedules, routines, and many demands and responsibilities, it is increasingly important for children to be allowed to just play.

See the following reasons why children need to play (statements in italics retrieved from More Than a Toy).

1. According to a clinical report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children.” Play is necessary in order to help children develop social skills, because they learn to get along with others, take turns, and much more. Play helps children gain healthy emotional development because it allows them to express their conscious and unconscious experiences regarding their feelings about their life and things that are going on around them.

2. Play is important to a child’s neurological development. By playing, children are promoting healthy brain development because they are strengthening many neuronal connections that would otherwise disappear or weaken if not used.

3. United Nations High Commission for Human Rights recognized play as a right of every child because of its importance to optimal child development.

4. Public schools throughout the United States continue to reduce the amount of time allotted to free play. For example, in response to No Child Left Behind, many schools increased their focus on reading and math by decreasing the amount of time allocated to recess and the creative arts. Ironically, play helps children adjust to school and improves their readiness to learn. When children are allowed to play without being told what they specifically have to do, they become more focused, have greater attention spans, and improve their academic skills.

5. Overscheduled family lifestyles often lead to less time for quality parent-child interaction and child-driven play. Many families would benefit from less hurried routines that allow for unstructured play. Family life and child behavior problems can improve when more child-led playtime is allowed on a frequent basis. When parents play with their children in a way that allows the child to decide what they are going to do and with the parent simply being with the child and interacting with them at the child’s level, parent-child relationships and family life can improve.

6. Children learn how to share, resolve conflicts, make decisions, be assertive, and work in groups through unstructured play. Although some children are more apt to have these skills than others, most children are able to develop these great social skills through playing with other children. Even playing alone can help a child gain self-confidence, assertiveness, decision-making skills, and much more.

7. Play allows children to identify, express, and learn about feelings. Children often use pretend play to act out things they see in their lives, such as what their mom and dad are like, experiences that occur at school, or what friendships are like. Amidst these everyday life experiences, children of course have feelings about the events. Children become more aware of their own and others’ feelings and how to manage feelings by expressing them and working through emotions in play.

8. Children can make sense of their life experiences through unstructured play. Children don’t see things the same way as adults do, so they can use play to have a better understanding of certain life experiences.

9. Parents can help children who are experiencing a wide range of difficulties by learning how to play with them in a specific way using selected toys. These difficulties include, but are not limited to, emotional problems, pervasive developmental disorders, speech problems, mental retardation, parental divorce, at-risk circumstances, relocation, immigration, abuse/neglect, mental health diagnoses, foster/adoption issues, chronic illness, social difficulties, hyperactivity, disabilities, learning difficulties, exposure to violence, adjustment difficulties, and deaf and hard of hearing. There are ways that a parent can help their children with these types of issues by using specific types of toys and specific types of interactions. However, there are also therapeutic interventions that a therapist or play therapist can teach a parent to best suit the child’s situation, such as filial therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, and play therapy interventions.

10. Parents can significantly improve their relationships with their children by learning how to play with them in a specific way using selected toys. When parents simply be with their child and truly focus on their child (without being in a hurry or trying to over-manage the play), their relationship with their child can greatly improve. Play time doesn’t have to occur for hours a day. It can be as little as a few minutes here and there but doing this type of play on a daily or at least almost daily basis is very helpful to a parent-child relationship.

War After War / 20 Ways To Never Get Cancer / Sept. 3 (Tuesday) is the First Day of Fall Semester

The Flowering of Truth
reveals the youth
of our existence.

Like a Child,
piece by piece
we combine bits of experience
into something elusive
and illusionairy.
As if we
define the World
around us.
And,
we do.

We plebeians of procrastination
often defer
from Peaceful pursuit.

               The Flowering of Truth.

In debt
from our desire
for prosperity,
we savoir the substance
of our circumstance,
while our good intentions,
rare for the moment,
perturbate in their orbits
around
the Human Heart.

In Time,
tainted with theatrics
in Love
with our self-esteem,
we live in isolated absence
of forethought.

In these tempest-tossed times,
there is the temptation
to tread lightly
upon the past,
which becomes prologue
and profound.
Our past is filled
with stones
to mark the Graves
of many,
known and unknown.

The Treasure
of our memory
is vast
and beyond Being.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”                 – William Faulkner

The fierce breath
of History
emanates from our ignorance
buried deep within
the Human Heart.

Between the violent breaths,
prospects for Peace
grow into illusion,
and the cycle begats
war after war.

The sounds of silence,
from our precious breathless deceased,
spiral upward
with startling clarity,
in sufferance of
mortal and moral anguish.

And still,
we
do not listen.

The American Battle Monuments Commission maintains 24 permanent American burial grounds on foreign soil.

Let us remember the past,
and Honor those
who gave their precious Lives
for us.
Let us learn from the past,
so that we do not remain,
as George Santayana reminds us,
savages or infants.
Let us learn
and Lovingly create
a Peaceful future,
filled with Forgiveness
and Love for all
who transgressed
against us.
Let us do this
for our precious Children.

“Those who do not remember their past
are condemned
to repeat their mistakes.
Those who do not read History
are doomed to repeat it.
Those who fail to learn
from the mistakes of their predecessors
are destined to repeat them.
Those who do not know History’s mistakes
are doomed to repeat them.”
George Santayana

My Dear Friends,
let us empower those
who can help
move our precious Lives
forward forever.
Let us help those
who can resurrect
the Future.

To do so,
let us help
ourselves.
Let us empower
we.

Let there be Peace on Earth
and let it begin with me.
Let there be Peace on Earth,
the Peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father
brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
in perfect harmony.
Let Peace begin with me,
let this be the moment now.
.
With every step I take
let this be my solemn vow,
to take each moment,
and live each moment
in Peace Eternally.
.
Let there be Peace on Earth
and let it begin with
me.

Jill Jackson-Miller and Sy Miller

Pierced by arrows
of discontent,
we cannot even now
define
our Blessings,
so abundantly bestowed.

His Will is made abundantly clear.

To know
the Will of God
reveals the destiny
of Mankind.
And His Will
is made
abundantly clear
in His Word.

You
may not Believe
in God.
But,
He Believes
in YOU.

You Faith
is
your Love of
God.
And Love is,
at the end of Life,
truly ALL
that remains,
and all that
ever was.

Goodnight.

                 All that ever was.

20 Ways To Never Get Cancer

Little habits that can save your life.

First, the good news: You probably won’t get cancer.

That is, if you have a healthy lifestyle. “As many as 70% of known causes of cancers are avoidable and related to lifestyle,” says Thomas A. Sellers, PhD, associate director for cancer prevention and control at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Diet, exercise, and avoidance of tobacco products are, of course, your first line of defense, but recent research has uncovered many small, surprising ways you can weave even more disease prevention into your everyday life.

Try these novel strategies and your risk of cancer could dwindle even more.

1. Filter your tap water
You’ll reduce your exposure to known or suspected carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals. A report from the President’s Cancer Panel on how to reduce exposure to carcinogens suggests that home-filtered tap water is a safer bet than bottled water, whose quality often is not higher – and in some cases is worse – than that of municipal sources, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group. (Consumer Reports’ top picks for faucet-mounted filters: Culligan, Pur Vertical, and the Brita OPFF-100.) Store water in stainless steel or glass to avoid chemical contaminants such as BPA that can leach from plastic bottles.

2. Stop topping your tank
So say the EPA and the President’s Cancer Panel: Pumping one last squirt of gas into your car after the nozzle clicks off can spill fuel and foil the pump’s vapor recovery system, designed to keep toxic chemicals such as cancer-causing benzene out of the air, where they can come in contact with your skin or get into your lungs.

MORE: 7 “Healthy” Habits That Aren’t

3. Marinate meat first
Processed, charred, and well-done meats can contain cancer-causing heterocyclic amines, which form when meat is seared at high temperatures, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which get into food when it’s charcoal broiled. “The recommendation to cut down on grilled meat has really solid scientific evidence behind it,” says Cheryl Lyn Walker, PhD, a professor of carcinogenesis at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. If you do grill, add rosemary and thyme to your favorite marinade and soak meat for at least an hour before cooking. The antioxidant-rich spices can cut HCAs by as much as 87%, according to research at Kansas State University.

4. Caffeinate every day
Java lovers who drank 5 or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day had a 40% decreased risk of brain cancer, compared with people who drank the least, in a 2010 British study. A 5-cup-a-day coffee habit reduces risks of oral and throat cancer almost as much. Researchers credit the caffeine: Decaf had no comparable effect. But coffee was a more potent protector against these cancers than tea, which the British researchers said also offered protection against brain cancer.

5. Water down your risk
Drinking plenty of water and other liquids may reduce the risk of bladder cancer by diluting the concentration of cancer-causing agents in urine and helping to flush them through the bladder faster. Drink at least 8 cups of liquid a day, suggests the American Cancer Society.

6. Load up on green greens
Next time you’re choosing salad fixings, reach for the darkest varieties. The chlorophyll that gives them their color is loaded with magnesium, which some large studies have found lowers the risk of colon cancer in women. “Magnesium affects signaling in cells, and without the right amount, cells may do things like divide and replicate when they shouldn’t,” says Walker. Just 1/2 cup of cooked spinach provides 75 mg of magnesium, 20% of the daily value.

7. Snack on Brazil nuts
They’re a stellar source of selenium, an antioxidant that lowers the risk of bladder cancer in women, according to research from Dartmouth Medical School. Other studies have found that people with high blood levels of selenium have lower rates of dying of lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Researchers think selenium not only protects cells from free radical damage but also may enhance immune function and suppress formation of blood vessels that nourish tumors.

8. Burn off your risk
Moderate exercise such as brisk walking 2 hours a week cuts risk of breast cancer 18%. Regular workouts may lower your risks by helping you burn fat, which otherwise produces its own estrogen, a known contributor to breast cancer. (Try these 14 Walking Workouts That Blast Fat.)

9. Skip the dry cleaner
A solvent known as perc (short for perchloroethylene) that’s used in traditional dry cleaning may cause liver and kidney cancers and leukemia, according to an EPA finding backed in early 2010 by the National Academies of Science. The main dangers are to workers who handle chemicals or treated clothes using older machines, although experts have not concluded that consumers are also at increased cancer risk. Less toxic alternatives: Hand-wash clothes with mild soap and air-dry them, spot cleaning if necessary with white vinegar.

10. Ask about breast density
Women whose mammograms have revealed breast density readings of 75% or more have a breast cancer risk 4 to 5 times higher than that of women with low density scores, according to recent research. One theory is that denser breasts result from higher levels of estrogen – making exercise particularly important (see #8). “Shrinking your body fat also changes growth factors, signaling proteins such as adipokines and hormones like insulin in ways that tend to turn off cancer-promoting processes in cells,” Walker says.

11. Head off cell phone risks
Use your cell phone only for short calls or texts, or use a hands-free device that keeps the phone – and the radio frequency energy it emits—away from your head. The point is more to preempt any risk than to protect against a proven danger: Evidence that cell phones increase brain cancer risk is “neither consistent nor conclusive,” says the President’s Cancer Panel report. But a number of review studies suggest there’s a link.

12. Block cancer with color
Choosing your outdoor outfit wisely may help protect against skin cancer, say Spanish scientists. In their research, blue and red fabrics offered significantly better protection against the sun’s UV rays than white and yellow ones did. Don’t forget to put on a hat: Though melanoma can appear anywhere on the body, it’s more common in areas the sun hits, and researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have found that people with melanomas on the scalp or neck die at almost twice the rate of people with the cancer on other areas of the body.

13. Pick a doc with a past
Experience – lots of it – is critical when it comes to accurately reading mammograms. A study from the University of California, San Francisco, found that doctors with at least 25 years’ experience were more accurate at interpreting images and less likely to give false positives. Ask about your radiologist’s track record. If she is freshly minted or doesn’t check a high volume of mammograms, get a second read from someone with more mileage.

14. Eat clean foods
The President’s Cancer Panel recommends buying meat free of antibiotics and added hormones, which are suspected of causing endocrine problems, including cancer. The report also advises that you purchase produce grown without pesticides and wash conventionally grown food thoroughly to remove residues. (The foods with the most pesticides: celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, and blueberries. See the full list of dirtiest fruits and vegetables here.) “At least 40 known carcinogens are found in pesticides and we should absolutely try to reduce exposure,” Sellers says.

15. Do a folic acid check
The B vitamin, essential for women who may become or are pregnant to prevent birth defects, is a double-edged sword when it comes to cancer risk. Consuming too much of the synthetic form (not folate, found in leafy green veggies, orange juice, and other foods) has been linked to increased colon cancer risk, as well as higher lung cancer and prostate cancer risks. Rethink your multivitamin, especially if you eat a lot of cereal and fortified foods. A CDC study discovered that half of supplement users who took supplements with more than 400 mcg of folic acid exceeded 1,000 mcg per day of folic acid. Most supplements pack 400 mcg. Individual supplements (of vitamin D and calcium, for instance) may be a smarter choice for most women who aren’t thinking of having kids.

16. Up your calcium intake
Milk’s main claim to fame may also help protect you from colon cancer. Those who took calcium faithfully for 4 years had a 36% reduction in the development of new precancerous colon polyps 5 years after the study had ended, revealed Dartmouth Medical School researchers. (They tracked 822 people who took either 1,200 mg of calcium every day or a placebo.) Though the study was not on milk itself, you can get the same amount of calcium in three 8-ounce glasses of fat-free milk, along with an 8-ounce serving of yogurt or a 2- to 3-ounce serving of low-fat cheese daily.

17. Commit to whole grains
You know whole wheat is better for you than white bread. Here’s more proof why you should switch once and for all: If you eat a lot of things with a high glycemic load—a measurement of how quickly food raises your blood sugar—you may run a higher risk of colorectal cancer than women who eat low-glycemic-load foods, found a Harvard Medical School study involving 38,000 women. The problem eats are mostly white: white bread, pasta, potatoes, and sugary pastries. The low-glycemic-load stuff comes with fiber.

18. Pay attention to pain
If you’re experiencing a bloated belly, pelvic pain, and an urgent need to urinate, see your doctor. These symptoms may signal ovarian cancer, particularly if they’re severe and frequent. Women and physicians often ignore these symptoms, and that’s the very reason that this disease can be deadly. When caught early, before cancer has spread outside the ovary, the relative 5-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is a jaw-dropping 90 to 95%.

19. Avoid unnecessary scans
CT scans are a great diagnostic tool, but they deliver much more radiation than x-rays and may be overused, says Barton Kamen, MD, PhD, chief medical officer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In fact, researchers suggest that one-third of CT scans could be unnecessary. High doses of radiation can trigger leukemia, so make sure scans are not repeated if you see multiple doctors, and ask if another test, such as an ultrasound or MRI, could substitute.

20. Drop 10 pounds
Being overweight or obese accounts for 20% of all cancer deaths among women and 14% among men, notes the American Cancer Society. (You’re overweight if your body mass index is between 25 and 29.9; you’re obese if it’s 30 or more.) Plus, losing excess pounds reduces the body’s production of female hormones, which may protect against breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer. Even if you’re not technically overweight, gaining just 10 pounds after the age of 30 increases your risk of developing breast, pancreatic, and cervical, among other cancers.

The Longest Journey / Sept. 3 (Tuesday) is the First Day of Fall Semester

The Longest Journey

The longest journey is from the head to the Heart.
It is a road not taken by many.
But on this beautiful pathway,
I found my way home.

In a recent broadcast Ravi Zacharias asked,
“Can you talk about education
without looking into the human heart?”
And my thought was
no,
it is impossible to even think of educating a child
without looking into the Heart of that child.
A child may never remember what you said,
but he will always remember how you made him feel.
Always.

How I clearly remember my Mother, Marie,
when as a young child,
I discovered she had completed the longest journey.
That was when I came to know Love profound
– the kind of Love one finds
only in the compassion expressed by Jesus.
Yes,
I discovered the Love of God
in my Mother.

Marie Anderson

Marie Anderson

By the time she had completed her brief sojourn in Life, she had shared with me the most precious gift of all, more precious than life itself. It was a Love so profound – the kind of Love one discovers only in the sanctity of forgiveness and in the light of hope, when all seems lost – such Love as is conveyed in the compassionate words found in the New Testament.

It was Love that not only never dies,
but opens up the heart and blossoms
like a flower in the wind
with each new dawn.
This kind of love dwells deep within your Heart and overflows out into the world around you and becomes a Blessing to everyone you meet.

You have witnessed such Love, in the smiles and in the laughter that surround your child, as your Heart embraces the precious moments you share. And your child has witnessed the same in the unconditional Love you have given.

It is now my belief that an infinite journey is possible. This journey is longer than we can imagine and it never ends. The longest journey is not from your head to your Heart, it is through your precious Heart.

Such a path leads to everyone, everywhere,
beyond our time and place.
It leads us to the destiny of all those who will live beyond.
For that is the nature of Love that lives within each one of us.
Love, I have discovered, is ultimately what we live for.
Love is what we are.
Love is all we leave behind that truly matters.
And Love profound is
Eternal.

Let Love guide your Life
and become your Northern Star.
Let it point the way.
It is
the pathway Home.

Goodnight.
