finding my precious Mother,
Marie,
lying in her bed,
literally in a pool
of her own blood.
She was rushed
to Baylor Medical Center.

I am in tears
as I share this with you.
They are tears
of Joy
and Thanksgiving.

The Surgeon visited with me
shortly before proceeding with
exploratory surgery.
And he shared with me
a sad truth.
I asked a simple question
and he gave me
the simple truth:
“Is there any Hope?”
No,
he whispered.
“What is the chance
that she can survive?”
None.
And then I searched his eyes
for any sign of Hope
and asked,
“What are her chances?”
He replied with great compassion
in his voice:
There is a one hundred percent
probability
that she will not survive
this night.
We will do what we can.
But, No.
Dr. Anderson, there is
no Hope.
Her condition is such
that she cannot survive
whatever is causing
this very massive loss of blood.
She is dying from cancer.
I’m sorry.“

I do not know how,
but I made my way
to the little Chapel
in the Hospital.

And there I cried
and cried and cried.
I begged God
not to take the Life
of this precious Mother.
I Prayed.
And through the tears
I could barely see.
But through the years,
I could clearly see.
What a Blessing
Life can be
when someone Loves you
as much
as she Loved me.

with my Lord.
I expressed my deep gratitude,
over and over again,
for her very precious Life.
I shared the need
to have her with me
a little longer.
I told my God,
“I still need her in my Life.
Please, let me have her
a little longer.”

I was in
so much pain.

And then
my Communion
with the Lord
suddenly ended.
A strange feeling,
a quiet Peace,
came to my Heart.
I never felt anything
like it before.

I looked around
and the good Doctor
was quietly standing behind me.
The look on his face
astonished me.
It shocked me.
I could not understand it.
It was a look
I never expected.

through me
with such an amazement
in his tired eyes?
He was speechless
for a very long time.

After what seemed like

The Aspirin – Cancer Link

Taking a low-dose aspirin daily is a common prescription for those at high risk for heart attack and stroke. Research within the last few years is pointing to another possible benefit of aspirin.

When taken regularly, it may also help reduce your risk for certain cancers, particularly colon and gastrointestinal cancers. The benefits, however, may still not outweigh the risks. Check with your Doctor.

In 2012, world-renowned aspirin expert Professor Peter Rothwell of Oxford University and colleagues published three studies in The Lancet journal that suggested that if you are middle-aged, taking a low-dose aspirin every day could slash your risk for various cancers in as few as 2 to 3 years! According to Rothwell, taking an aspirin a day may also help to prevent an existing localized cancer from metastasizing (spreading to other parts of the body), a finding that holds promise for current cancer patients who may likewise receive some benefit from supplementing with aspirin.

A study published this year in JAMA Oncology showed that taking a low-dose aspirin every day may lower your risk for colon cancer by 19%, your risk for gastrointestinal cancer by 15% and your overall cancer risk by 3%. The benefits appeared after 6 years of supplementation.

Senior researcher Dr. Andrew Chan, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston explained: “That makes sense, because cancers don’t typically develop overnight. They take years to develop, so you would have to take aspirin for a long time to prevent cancer.”

According to Chan, aspirin impacts particular biological pathways that can cause cancer. Aspirin also helps to lower inflammation and possibly limit the number of cancer-causing proteins in the body.

The study analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which followed 130,000 men and women over 30 years. While no link between aspirin and a lower risk for breast, prostate, or lung cancers was found, data did seem to suggest that when aspirin was taken 2 or more times a week it might prevent 17% of colon cancer diagnoses for those not screened with a colonoscopy, and 5-8% of colon cancer cases for those who are.

Our annual Shakespeare theatrical production is under way.
We are proud of George Rodriquez, Director,
as he works diligently with our students in the always difficult task of preparing them for a full evening
presenting the enduring work of
William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare is always challenging,
but we engage our scholars in the difficult study and presentation of his work for several reasons.

First, because it is difficult!
Children need to be challenged. And they need to meet scholarly challenges with guidance, patience and ultimate success. The pride they feel after a successful presentation on stage can be literally felt for the rest of their lives. And it is a pride that can be shared with family and friends. Our children share the pride of their accomplishment and rightfully so. And our pride is seeing them excited about learning and, more importantly, coming to love the beautiful and intoxicating language of Shakespeare is beyond what we can express.

Second, because it is so Beautiful.
The scope of Shakespeare’s work and the depth of his understanding of the human condition and perilous philosophical dilemmas faced by mankind is breathtaking.

Third, because it is necessary.
The difference between a highly educated person and one that is not well-educated is phenomenal. Anyone living in this country who is not familiar with Shakespeare, and other notable playwrights, is in sufferance of a significant disadvantage. Not only will he or she be remedial as a college bound student, but acutely deficient in social situations and professional endeavors.

Fourth, because an understanding of this absolute pillar of western civilization is essential in enabling and empowering our young children. They cannot be prepared to lead this country and their communities and families without an exposure to the essential and fundamental tenants of our history and literature. Where else are they going to gain the insightful wisdom and privileged introduction to ideas so fundamental to forming broad perspectives and balanced judgment. If we, as a civilization, do not allow our children to gain access to the wisdom of the ages, we shall doom the next generation to the narrow minded thinking and painful mistakes of the past. History will surely repeat itself if our historical tolerance of ignorance remains the same and our expectations are always low.

What is extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation?

Radiation is the emission or sending out of energy from any source. X-rays are an example of radiation, but so is the light that comes from the sun and the heat that is constantly coming off our bodies.

When talking about radiation and cancer, many people think of specific kinds of radiation such as x-rays or the radiation in nuclear reactors. But these are not the only types of radiation that concern us when we think about radiation risks to human health.

Radiation exists across a spectrum from very high-energy (also referred to as high-frequency) radiation to very low-energy (or low-frequency) radiation. This is sometimes referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum.

Examples of high-energy radiation include x-rays and gamma rays. They, as well as some higher energy ultraviolet (UV) rays, are classified as ionizing radiation, which means that they have enough energy to remove an electron from (ionize) an atom. Ionizing radiation can damage the DNA inside cells, which can lead to mutations and the uncontrolled cell growth we know as cancer.

Extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation is at the low-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum and is a type of non-ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing radiation has enough energy to move atoms around or make them vibrate, but not enough to directly damage DNA. ELF radiation has even lower energy than other types of non-ionizing radiation like radiofrequency radiation, visible light, and infrared.

With most types of radiation, the electric and magnetic fields are coupled. Because they act as one, they are considered together as an electromagnetic field (EMF). But with ELF radiation, the magnetic field and the electrical field can exist and act independently, so they are often studied separately. Typically, we use the term “magnetic field” to indicate ELF radiation from a magnetic field, while we use “electric field” to mean ELF radiation from an electric field.

The possible link between electromagnetic fields and cancer has been a subject of controversy for several decades. It’s not clear exactly how electromagnetic fields, a form of low-energy, non-ionizing radiation, can increase cancer risk. Plus, because we are all exposed to different amounts of these fields at different times, the issue has been hard to study.

Electric and magnetic fields

All radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum is produced by the interactions of 2 forces, referred to as fields. Radiation has both an electric field and a magnetic field.

Electric fields are the forces acting on charged particles (parts of atoms), like electrons or protons, which cause them to move. Electric current is simply the flow of electrons produced by an electric field. The strength of an electric field is often expressed as volts per meter (V/m) or, for stronger fields, as kilovolts per meter (kV/m), where a kilovolt is 1000 volts.

A magnetic field is created when charged particles are in motion. The strength of a magnetic field can be expressed in many different units, including tesla (T), microtesla (µT or one millionth of a tesla), and gauss (G), where one G equals 100 µT.

How are people exposed to ELF radiation?

Generating, transmitting, distributing, and using electricity all expose people to ELF radiation. Power lines, household wiring, and any device that uses electricity can generate ELF radiation. Thus any electric device, from refrigerators and vacuum cleaners to televisions and computer monitors (when they are on) are sources of ELF radiation. Even electric blankets expose people to ELF radiation.

How much electromagnetic radiation you are exposed to depends on the strength of the electromagnetic field, your distance from the source of the field, and the length of time you are exposed. The highest exposure occurs when the person is very close to a source putting out a strong field and stays there for a long period.

Does ELF radiation cause cancer?

Researchers use 2 main types of studies to try to figure out if something causes cancer.

• Lab studies: In lab studies, animals are exposed to different levels of the substance (sometimes at extremely high levels) to see if this exposure causes tumors or other health problems. Researchers might also expose normal human cells in a lab dish to see if this causes the types of changes that are seen in cancer cells. It’s not always clear that the results from these types of studies directly apply to humans, but lab studies are a good way to find out if an exposure might possibly cause cancer.
• Studies in people: Other types of studies look at cancer rates in different groups of people. Such a study might compare the cancer rate in an exposed group to the rate in a group with lower exposures, or to a group not exposed at all. Sometimes the exposed group’s cancer rate is compared to the cancer rate in the general population. But it can be hard to know what the results of these studies mean, because many other factors might affect the results. For example, people are typically exposed to many substances other than the one being studied, and these other exposures could affect the results.

In most cases neither type of study provides conclusive evidence on its own, so researchers usually look at both lab-based and human studies when trying to figure out if something can cause cancer.

Studies in the lab

Several large studies have looked at the possible effects of ELF magnetic fields on cancer in rats and mice. These studies expose the animals to magnetic fields much stronger than what people are normally exposed to at home, with fields ranging from 2 to 5000 microtesla (µT). Most of these studies have found no increase in the risk of any type of cancer. In fact, the risk of some types of cancer was actually lower in the animals exposed to the ELF radiation. One study did show an increased risk of tumors that start in thyroid cells, called C-cells, in male rats at some exposures. This increased risk was not seen in female rats or in mice, and was not seen at the highest field strength. These inconsistencies, and the fact that these findings were not consistently seen in the other studies, make it hard for scientists to conclude that the observed increased risk of tumors is from the ELF radiation.

Other studies in mice and rats have looked specifically for increases in leukemia and lymphoma as a result of exposure to ELF radiation, but these studies have also not found a link.

Studies in people

Studying the effects of ELF radiation in people can be hard, for many reasons:

Exposure to ELF radiation is very common, so it’s not possible to compare people who are exposed with people who aren’t exposed. Instead, studies try to compare people exposed at higher levels with people exposed at lower levels.

It is very hard to determine how much ELF radiation a person has been exposed to, especially over a long period. As far as we know, the effects of ELF radiation do not add up over time, and there is no test that can measure how much exposure a person has had.

Researchers can get a snapshot of ELF exposures by having a person wear a device that records their exposure levels over hours or days. Or, researchers can measure the magnetic or electrical field strength in a person’s home or workplace settings.

Other options include estimating exposure based on the wiring configuration of someone’s workplace/home or on its distance from power lines. But these methods result in exposure estimates that have a lot of uncertainty and that can produce biased estimates of total exposure. They typically do not account for a person’s ELF exposures while in other places, they don’t measure ELF exposures in every location that person has ever lived or worked over their lifetime. As a result, there are no good ways to accurately estimate someone’s long-term exposure, which is what matters most when looking for possible effects on cancer risk.

In children

• A number of studies have looked at a possible link between ELF radiation from magnetic fields in the home and childhood leukemia, with mixed results. Still, when the findings from these studies are combined, a small increase in risk is seen for children at the highest exposure levels compared to those with the lowest exposure levels. Studies looking at the effect of ELF electric fields on childhood leukemia have not found a link.

Studies have generally not found any strong links between ELF electric or magnetic fields and other types of childhood cancers.

In adults

Although several studies have looked at possible links between ELF exposures in adults and cancer, most have not found a link.

What expert agencies say

Several national and international agencies study different exposures in the environment to determine if they can cause cancer. (Something that causes cancer or helps cancer grow is called a carcinogen.) The American Cancer Society looks to these organizations to evaluate the risks based on evidence from laboratory, animal, and human research studies.

Based on animal and human evidence like the examples above, some expert agencies have evaluated the cancer-causing nature of ELF radiation.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). One of its major goals is to identify causes of cancer. In 2002, IARC considered the evidence for ELF magnetic and electric fields separately:

• It found “limited evidence” in humans for the carcinogenicity of ELF magnetic fields in relation to childhood leukemia, with “inadequate evidence” in relation to all other cancers. It found “inadequate evidence” for the carcinogenicity of ELF magnetic fields based on studies in lab animals.
• It found “inadequate evidence” for the carcinogenicity of ELF electric fields in humans.

Based on this assessment, IARC has classified ELF magnetic fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” It has classified  ELF electric fields as “not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to humans.”

In 1999, the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) described the scientific evidence suggesting that ELF exposure poses a health risk as “weak,” but noted that it cannot be recognized as entirely safe, and considered it to be a “possible” human carcinogen.

How can I avoid exposure to ELF radiation?

It’s not clear that exposure to ELF radiation is harmful, but there are things you can do to lower your exposure if you are concerned. Your exposure is based on the strength of the ELF radiation coming from each source, how close you are to each, and how long you spend in the field.

The NIEHS recommends that people concerned about their exposure to EMF (and ELF radiation) find out where their major EMF sources are and move away from them or limit the time spent near them. For example, moving even an arm’s length away from a source can dramatically lower exposure to its field.

Power lines

People who are concerned about ELF radiation exposure from high-power electrical lines should keep in mind that the intensity of any exposure goes down significantly as you get farther away from the source. On the ground, the strength of the electromagnetic field is highest directly under the power line. As you get farther away, you are exposed to less and less, with the level eventually matching normal home background levels. The electromagnetic field directly under a power line is typically in the range of what you could be exposed to when using certain household appliances.

If you are concerned about your exposure to electromagnetic sources around you (including power lines), you can measure the field strength with a device called a gaussmeter.

In an era of aggressive marketing toward kids and parents alike, many parents wonder what kids actually need. Turns out, there’s a pretty clear answer.

“Years of research in child development have identified eight essential requirements for kids to become happy, successful adults,” says Harley Rotbart, MD, a nationally-renowned parenting expert and vice chair emeritus of Pediatrics at Children’s Colorado. “And none of them involve high-tech gadgets, video games or fancy clothes.”

The eight things kids need to thrive

1. Security

   Kids must feel safe and sound, with their basic survival needs met: shelter, food, clothing, medical care and protection from harm.

2. Stability

   Stability comes from family and community. Ideally, a family remains together in a stable household, but when that’s not possible, it’s important to disrupt the child’s life as little as possible. Kids and families should be a part of larger units to give them a sense of belonging, tradition and cultural continuity.

3. Consistency

   No “good cop, bad cop.” Parents should synchronize their parenting and make sure important values stay consistent.

4. Emotional support

   Parents’ words and actions should encourage kids’ trust, respect, self-esteem and, ultimately, independence.

5. Love

   Saying and showing you love your kids can overcome almost any parenting “mistakes” you might make. Even when your kids have disobeyed, angered, frustrated and rebelled against you, show them you love them and that you’ll always love them.

6. Education

   Make sure your kids get the best possible education for their future. This includes school, of course, but it also includes the invaluable life lessons you provide during the time you spend together.

7. Positive role models

   Parents are their kids’ first and most important role models. Instill your values and teach children empathy by being the kind of person you want them to become.

8. Structure

   Rules, boundaries, and limits: Without them, kids are forced to be adults before they are ready, and they lose respect for you and other adults.

Perhaps the most important factor of all is time. Without enough time to spend with kids and be a parent, “You miss out on the wonderful privileges of parenting,” Dr. Rotbart says. “And kids miss out on some of their needs.”

Just 1 Year Of Smartphone Use
Could Cause Memory Loss Among Teens: Research

Countless times our elders have warned us about the dangers of using a smartphone.  And yet, we never listen to them thinking they are merely blabbering without any research-backed data.

Well now might be the time to apologize for ignoring their sixth sense. New research states that only one year of smartphone radiation is long enough to damage a teenager’s brain.

According to the report published by Environmental Health Perspectives in Switzerland, researchers found a relation between smartphone radiation and short-term memory loss in teenagers.

Over 700 adolescents aged 12 to 17 were exposed to electromagnetic field radiations (RF-EMF) which occur from smartphones during calling.

The study received negative results after the students were given image and verbal tests roughly after one year of the baseline test.

“This may suggest that indeed RF-EMF absorbed by the brain is responsible for the observed associations,” said Martin Röösli, Head of Environmental Exposures.

It is important to note here that the negative impact on the brain occurred only while keeping the phone close to the head. Activities such as playing games, sending a text or browsing the internet don’t necessarily affect the brain since the radiations are far off from the head.

Although, Martin Röösli warns that more research is needed in this area to see how other factors like puberty have played out in the study.  She clears out that phone radiations have a potential risk of damaging brains.

“A unique feature of this study is the use of objectively collected mobile phone user data from mobile phone operators.” Martin Röösli mentions in the research.

As per the research, you can minimize the effects of RF-EMF radiations by using headphones and loudspeakers much often than keeping the phone close to your head.

In this article, I’m going to cover the lowest radiation cell phones, and smartphones, that you can buy.

Although it isn’t the absolute best measure of a phones safety when it comes to EMF radiation exposure, SAR ratings are really our only publicly available means to compare the radiation levels of these devices.

So, after we talk about the lowest radiation phones, I’ll go a bit more in depth about what a SAR Rating is, why it matters, and why it isn’t always the best for determining the safety of a phone.

Lowest Radiation Cell Phones of 2019

This is a comprehensive chart of the lowest radiation cell phones currently available. I’ll do my best to keep it updated as new phones are released and their SAR ratings become available.

Lowest SAR Cell Phone / Smartphone

As you can see from the chart above, technically, the cellphone with the lowest SAR rating currently available is the Verykool Vortex RS90. The Vortex RS90 has a SAR of just .18 w/kg. You probably haven’t heard of this phone because it isn’t particularly popular.

Verykool is a company based out of Miami Florida that has a small line of mobile phones and accessories. The Vortex RS90 (usually just referred to as the Vortex) is a fairly simple, android based Smartphone. The most unique part of the phone is it’s unusually low SAR rating.

As you can see from the chart, coming in just second place with only a slightly higher specific absorption rate, is the Samsung Galaxy Note with a SAR rating of just .19 w/kg. This is by far the lowest radiation smartphone by a major manufacturer.

In fact, Samsung devices hold 12 of the 20 spots for lowest radiation cell phones.

Which leads us to the question:

Why Do Samsung Phones Have Such Low SAR Ratings?

It’s actually a pretty interesting story. It used to be that the FCC mandated that cell phone manufacturers only use antennas that transmitted in all directions, known as omni directional antennas.

In 2003 the FCC changed its rule, in part to protect hearing aids from the radiation emitted from the omni directional antenna, and no longer required that phone manufacturers use this time of antenna.

Three years after this change, in 2006, Samsung released a new antenna that “enhances handset safety by radiating most of the transmitted RF energy away from the handset user.”

This was not only a transformational upgrade for Samsung, but something brand new to the industry. More importantly, though, it dramatically lowered the recorded SAR ratings of all the phones using this antenna.

You see, if you take a look at the image below, you’ll notice that specific absorption rate tests are done with a model head, and a cellphone held by machine very close to the ear. This fairly closely replicates how a normal person would use the phone.

They read how much radiation is absorbed by the dummy. Since Samsung’s new antenna directed most of the radiation away from the head, it resulted in far lower SAR ratings.

So Why Don’t Other Phone Manufacturers Do This?

Well frankly, they don’t have to. The regulations only say that you no longer have to use an omnidirectional antenna and that you have to stay under 1.6 w/kg on SAR tests.

So, not only do phone manufacturers not want to put the money into the research and development, but they also don’t want to admit that there is even a reason to try and achieve lower SAR ratings.

Alright, we’ve talked a lot about SAR ratings when determining the lowest radiation cell phones on the market, so let’s break this down a bit.

What Are SAR Ratings?

SAR, or specific absorption rate, is simply a measurement of how much EMF radiation human tissue absorbs from a specific phone.

So first, what even is Specific Absorption Rate?

Well, in short, SAR is a measurement of the rate at which body tissue absorbs EMF radiation from a specific phone.

This measurement is used internationally, with different countries having set different legal minimums.

In the United States, the FCC (Federal Communication Commission) published a set of rules in 1996 defining the legal EMF exposure limits.

They decided that no phone sold in the United States could have a SAR rating that exceeded 1.6 w/kg of body weight. So, when tested, the dummy (that represents a person) can’t absorb more than 1.6 watts of radiation for each kg of body weight represented.

The measurements are based on a person holding the phone to their ear for 30 minutes.

Are SAR Ratings A Good Way To Determine Cell Phone Safety?

Probably not.

First of all, these SAR standards were set almost 25 years ago, when cell phones, and our understanding of the dangers of EMF radiation, were far different.

Secondly, SAR standards are only designed to protect users from the dangers of the heat generated by microwave radiation. These standards do not account for the non-ionizing radiation that we now know is harmful, especially via long-term exposure.

SAR ratings also don’t really give us a real world example of the radiation emitted or absorbed, since this will be largely determined by the person using the phone, how the phone is being used, apps on the device, etc.

In fact, the FCC on their website admits that:  “cell phones constantly vary their power to operate at the minimum power necessary for communications; operation at maximum power occurs infrequently. Consequently, cell phones cannot be reliably compared to their overall exposure characteristics on the basis of a single SAR value.

Alright, now let’s answer a few related questions:

How Can I Check The SAR Rating Of My Phone?

There are quite a few ways to check the SAR Rating of a mobile phone, which is why I wrote this post that outlines 7 different ways.

But my favorite, and the one I use most often, is called the “Quick Code” method. Essentially all phone manufacturers are required to have this code protocol that communicates information about the device to the service provider.

There is quite a bit of information contained, and part of that information is the SAR rating of your particular phone.

To use this method, just follow these simple steps:

1. Open up your phone like you’re about to make a phone call.
2. Dial exactly this: *#07#
3. Press send as if you’re about to call that number, and voila, you’ll be presented the information.

Just a quick aside –  I just want to mention that if you’re worried about EMF radiation, there is an E-book that I absolutely cannot recommend any higher called “The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs” that I would really encourage you to check out. I didn’t write it, but it’s one of the absolute best resources available. 

What Is The Lowest Radiation Smartphone?

The current lowest radiation smartphone (by SAR rating) is the Verykool Vortex RS90 with a SAR rating of .18 w/kg.

What Is The Lowest Radiation i Phone?

The lowest radiation iPhone ever sold was the iPhone 3GS that came out in 2009, and had a reported SAR rating of .79 W/kg. You can reference the chart below for all iPhone SAR ratings.

Currently, the LG Exalt has the lowest SAR rating of any LG phone, at just .43 W/kg.

How Can I Reduce My Exposure To Cell Phone Radiation?

I don’t want to go too deep into this topic, because I wrote a hugely comprehensive guide on reducing your exposure to cell phones that you can checkout.

I literally outline 17 different ways you can reduce your exposure, with detailed steps on how to do it.

However, one of the absolute best things you can do is to get a quality EMF protection case for your phone. I’m currently using (and loving) this one you can pick up on Amazon.

It’s also really, really, important that you have a quality EMF meter, like the Trifield TF2. Not only will this let you accurately measure the EMF radiation from your cell-phone, and determine just how low, or high, that radiation is, but it will also be crucial in any EMF mitigation you attempt.

If you’ve noticed throughout my articles, I often recommend this, because, without a good EMF meter, you won’t be able to find the sources of radiation, or know if what you are doing to reduce it is even helping.

Keeping harmful chemicals in your home puts both children and pets at risk (as well as adults), especially if they accidentally get into them when you’re not looking. That’s why it’s best to use all-natural products that pose absolutely NO risk, except to your target.

Below are ways to effectively deter ants naturally, provided by Mother Nature Network.

Lemon Juice – Spraying pure lemon juice in or around openings near your home can prevent the pests from entering.

Kylee found several new friends at the Zoo.

Cinnamon – Ground, oil or combined with ground cloves, both fill your home with warm, seasonal scents and deter ants if sprinkled in their paths.

Peppermint – either by itself, or combined with equal parts water can be mixed and sprayed directly at the ants or along their pathways.

Coffee grounds – place used coffee grounds in the cracks near their entryway. The coffee deters the ants, forcing them to set up shop somewhere else.

Chalk – Drawing a line around windows or doorway entries has kept ants at bay for some. You can usually find chalk at home improvement stores, some of which come in a squeeze bottle, making application easy.

Baking soda and powdered sugar – Mixing baking soda and powdered sugar in jar lids and placing them in strategic corners can greatly reduce ant populations.

Hot water and dish soap – Filling a spray bottle with soap and hot water can work very effectively against ants. Also, food items that attract ants, such as honey jars, can be placed on a small water-filled saucer to prevent the insects from reaching it.

Vinegar plus equal parts water isn’t just great for cleaning your kitchen counter tops and floors but has been known to sufficiently kill unwanted insects. Pouring the solution where the ants have their nest is key. You can also mix vinegar with peppermint for an extra kick that gets rid of them faster.

Cream of wheat – Posts on Helpful Gardener say cream of wheat takes care of ant infestations. After eating the cream of wheat, rolled oats, dry cornmeal or grits, it swells up in their guts and their stomachs explode.

Also from Natural News: For decades, top officials at the Environmental Protection Agency (PEA) were aware that a compound approved for agricultural use in the United States was wiping out the Honeybee population, but they chose to ignore the compound’s effects in deference to pressure from agri-giant corporations.

Worse, the agency reacted harshly to anyone within the EPA who attempted to bring the issue to light, including through firings, forced reassignments and other actions.According to a scholarly study [PDF] compiled by researcher Rosemary Mason, “on behalf of a global network of independent scientists, beekeepers and environmentalists,” and published on the website of MIT, “We have found evidence to show that the herbicide glyphosate (or alternatives) the primary substance found in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide – became a global best-selling herbicide because the public was told by industry and the regulators that it was ‘safe.’ “

The results have been disastrous. The heavy use of glyphosate has led to the rise of so-called “superweeds” that are resistant to the herbicide. And there is another compound that was approved by the EPA — over the objections of scientists — that has had a devastating effect on the nation’s honeybee population: clothianidin, which is used for seed treatment on corn and canola, by Bayer.

Alden showed us the finer points of befriending the feathered ones.

        ‘Honeybees are going extinct’

According to this EPA document describing clothianidin [PDF], it “is highly toxic to honey bees on an acute contact basis,” and “has the potential for toxic chronic exposure to honey bees, as well as other non-target pollinators, through residues in nectar and pollen. “In Honey bees, the effects of this toxic chronic exposure may include lethal effects in the larvae and reproductive effects in the queen,”. Her research team found additional evidence of corporate/EPA cover-up regarding the effects of clothianidin.

This 99-page EPA memorandum, [PDF] noted, in part:The major risk concerns are with aquatic free-swimming and benthic invertebrates, terrestrial invertebrates, birds and mammals.Clothianidin is an insecticide that is both persistent and systemic. Acute toxicity studies to honey bees show that clothianidin is highly toxic on both a contact and an oral basis.

Tests and field studies, as well as incident reports suggest the potential for long term toxic risk to honey bees and other beneficial insects.

A number of EPA scientists – those with integrity, anyway – have tried along the way to sound the alarm – over both glyphosate and clothianidin.

In a piece for The Huffington Post, former EPA scientist Evaggelos Vallianatos wrote that honeybees were on the verge of extinction.

Here is a beneficial insect pollinating a third of America’s crops, especially fruits and vegetables, and we thank the fragile and highly beneficial honeybees with stupefying killing.

Poisoning of honeybees became routine in the mid-1970s with the EPA’s approval of neurotoxins encapsulated in dust-size particles that took days to release their deadly gas. He further noted that some of his colleagues have tried to denounce the EPA actions, but the agency reacted “with fury” after one EPA ecologists discovered neurotoxic plastic spheres in the gut of a queen honeybee, which “meant poison in the honey.

“It forced the scientist out of his laboratory and into paper pushing in Washington. Approval of the industry’s neurotoxins expanded to cover most major crops.
