7 Ways to Stop Violence at Every Age

Understanding, preventing, and effectively
treating violence

by Lisa Firestone Ph.D.

When you see an image of a violent adult, it’s hard to imagine the innocent baby they once were. Is there such thing as being born violent? Are there really “bad seeds” when it comes to human life?

Like so many qualities, violence involves an interaction between genetics and the environment. We may not be able to alter the DNA we are born with, but we can strongly influence how these genes are expressed. With all the factors proven to contribute to violence, we can no longer say that violent individuals are just “born that way.” There is a lot we can do to prevent violence, and hardly anyone at any age is hopeless or beyond help.

Violence is the result of a combination of biological, social, and psychological factors, especially those that increase exposure to vulnerability, shame, and humiliation. Preventing violence must involve the opposite: making sure people feel safe, cared about, and connected, while ensuring they have a healthy and realistic sense of self-esteem and self-worth.

Many environmental factors can contribute to violence. These include adverse childhood events such as abuse, neglect, trauma, loss, and abandonment. Victims of poverty, children who are missing basic necessities and who struggle with poor healthcare or nutrition are more likely to encounter or engage in violence.

A mother I knew raised twin boys who lost their father at a young age. Working two jobs to scrape by to support her family, she had little choice but to frequently leave her sons on their own. One of the twins buried his head in books and found education as his refuge. The other boy turned to a gang for companionship and violence as an outlet for his inner turmoil. This combination of trauma and neglect, though unintentional, became a breeding ground for violent behavior. Without a constructive outlet—like school, counseling, or an available parental figure—one of her sons faced a heavy social and emotional struggle and followed a path toward violence and crime, while the other was able to channel his struggle into something positive.

So how can we prevent children from becoming violent? And how can we treat people who’ve already demonstrated violent tendencies? Here are some of the Do’s of stopping violence among children, adolescents, and adults. This list is addressed to parents, but it truly applies to any influential figure in a child’s life.

Forming an Attachment

Make sure children have caring adults in their lives. Research has shown that kids need a minimum of five caring adults to help them grow up happy and healthy. It isn’t just parents who have an impact on their kids. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, counselors, and family friends can serve as positive role models to our kids. Parents can hurt themselves and their children by creating an isolated environment around them. Encourage kind, compassionate, and ethical people to be involved in your child’s lives from the get-go.

For both children and adults who show violent tendencies, it is important to help them form attachments. Attaching to someone, whether from their family or a rehabilitation program, has been proven to help even highly violent individuals to make a real change. Research shows that helping violent prisoners develop attachment can prevent violence.

Developing a Conscience

Help your children develop a conscience by A) being attuned to them, B) not being violent toward or in front of them, C) providing a secure, safe base for them, and D) repairing when you slip up. We all make mistakes as parents, but openly admitting and apologizing for these mistakes shows your kids that you are human, that they are not to blame, and that they too should demonstrate care and concern.

A formerly violent inmate I interviewed for the documentary film Voices of Violence stated that in the time he spent in an intensive therapeutic prison program, he’d “grown a conscience.”

Developing Empathy

Help your child develop empathy. Imagine the scene of your child hitting another child in the park. In that moment, you’d probably insist they say sorry, but what do you do to make them feel empathetic? Saying sorry can be meaningless if a child doesn’t mean it. At these times, ask your child to describe how he or she would feel being hit. This helps the child to feel compassion and sympathy, while understanding what it really means to hurt someone.

Prisoners can be taught empathy through effective intervention programs like victim impact groups, where victims of violence speak to prisoners about their experience. The San Francisco prison system embraced this technique and employed a treatment strategy that reduced recidivism (criminal re-offenses of released prisoner) by 80 percent.

Getting Attention

Give kids attention—never give them the silent or avoidant treatment. Adolescents acting up need more attention, not less. In juvenile correction facilities, they’ve found that solitary confinement is the worst thing for a teen who is behaving badly. Depriving a kid in need of services and contact hurts them; their behavior indicates they need more adult contact. By isolating them, when their acting out is to seek attention, albeit negative attention, we continue the punishment cycle. Intensifying treatment when adolescents act out breaks the punishment cycle, while reducing their likelihood of becoming violent. This has proven to be effective even in adolescents with psychopathic tendencies.

Building Self-Esteem

Help your child find something they are good at and offer real praise for those achievements. False praise inflates a person’s vanity but does little to enhance their real sense of self-worth or self-esteem. Yet acknowledging children for honest accomplishments and true abilities helps them to know their value.

Vanity has actually been found to contribute to violence. Conversely, prisoners given the opportunity to gain a sense of value by helping other people has highly positive results. In the Restorative Justice model, prisoners are given this opportunity, with many people who run the program having previously been participants in the program.

Avoiding Harsh Punishment

Don’t punish a child harshly. When we are violent, abusive, or insensitive to our children, we lead by example. We teach them to be unsympathetic, out of control, and at the whim of their anger. We must be attuned to how we discipline our children. Make sure our punishment comes out of care and concern for how they feel and behave, and not from our own emotional issues.

Harsh punishment in prisons turns these institutions into what James Gilligan has called “graduate schools for crime.” By focusing our efforts on education and treatment instead of punishment, we prevent many prisoners from becoming violent upon release; we save potential victims of future violence; and we save taxpayers the money they would spend toward re-imprisoning repeat offenders.

Learning Calming Techniques

Teach your children how to calm down when they’re upset. The best way to do this is to lead by example. It’s important to demonstrate your own resilience, problem-solving, and coping strategies in front of your children. This does not mean acting tough or hiding your feelings. It means demonstrating healthy techniques for handling conflict and emotion in your own life and encouraging them to do the same.

San Francisco’s Manalive program has been successful in teaching male prisoners techniques to identify when they get triggered and to hit the pause button at those moments of stress. These men are then able to make reasonable decisions. They no longer feed their aggressive emotions with destructive thoughts toward others, which, in turn, stops them from committing acts of violence. Programs like Manalive have helped rehabilitate men who’ve been violent by teaching them to communicate and to “get in touch with their emotions and gain compassion and forgiveness for themselves and others.”

On a societal and political level, we must not overlook those struggling and work harder to provide services to help educate this population. We know that in the case of prisoners who’ve been jailed for violent crimes, the factors proven to reduce recidivism include therapy, education, teaching professional skills, and substance abuse treatment. On a personal level, whether we are aiming to prevent a child from becoming violent or to steer a person away from a life already touched by violence, we must foster our own compassion and faith in a human being’s goodness and potential.

Dr. James Gilligan wrote in his book Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic, “The self cannot survive without love. The self starved of love dies. That is how violence can cause the death of the self even when it does not kill the body. The two possible sources of love for the self are love from others, and one’s own love for oneself. Children who fail to receive sufficient love from others fail to build those reserves of self-love, and the capacity for self-love, which enable them to survive the inevitable rejections and humiliations which even the most fortunate of people cannot avoid.”

The solution to the problem of violence is never to turn our backs, but to keep our hearts and minds open to how we can individually affect change—and that change starts with how we raise our children from the day they are born.

Beautiful Orchid Flowers Blooming in Stock Footage Video ...This Is Scientific Proof

That Happiness Is A Choice

One theory in psychology research suggests that we all have a happiness “set-point” that largely determines our overall well-being. We oscillate around this set point, becoming happier when something positive happens or the opposite, afterwards returning to equilibrium.

But this set-point, to a certain extent, can be reset. Although our general mood levels and well-being are partially determined by factors like genetics and upbringing, roughly 40 percent of our Happiness is within our control, according to some experts, and a large body of research in the field of positive psychology has shown that happiness is a choice that anyone can make. As psychologist William James put it, “The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human can alter his life by altering his attitude.”

Here are eight ways you can take control of your own happiness.

Simply try.

happiness

A little effort can go a long way in increasing happiness. Two small experimental studies, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, found that simply trying to be happier could actually elevate mood and well-being. In one study, two groups of students listened to “happy” music – one group was instructed to make a concerted effort to feel happier, while the other group was instructed not to actively try to lift their mood. The group that tried to feel happy experienced the most elevated moods after listening to the music.

Make Happiness your number-one goal.

People who are happy choose to make happiness among their top goals in life, according to psychologist Tom G. Stevens, Ph.D., author of You Can Choose to Be Happy.

“Choose to take advantage of opportunities to learn how to be happy,” Stevens told WebMD. “For example, reprogram your beliefs and values. Learn good self-management skills, good interpersonal skills, and good career-related skills. Choose to be in environments and around people that increase your probability of happiness. The persons who become the happiest and grow the most are those who also make truth and their own personal growth primary values.”

Linger on those little, positive moments.

coffee

According to Rick Hanson, neuropsychologist and author of Hardwiring Happiness, our brains are wired to scout for all that’s bad – as he puts it, the brain is like velcro for negative experiences and teflon for positive ones. This “negativity bias” causes the brain to react intensely to bad news, compared to how it responds to good news. But we can counter the brain’s negativity bias – which triggers us to form stronger bad memories than good ones – by appreciating and lingering on those tiny, positive moments.

“People don’t recognize the hidden power of everyday experiences,” Hanson told The Huffington Post. “We’re surrounded by opportunities — 10 seconds here or 20 seconds there — to just register useful experiences and learn from them. People don’t do that when they could.”

Choose mindfulness.

meditation

The secret to happiness could be as simple (and difficult) as becoming more mindful. Meditation – a practice that anyone can do, anywhere, so long as they’re willing to sit and try to silence the mind – is thought to be a happiness-booster.

University of Wisconsin psychology professor Richard Davidson found in his research that a meditation practice might help to shift brain activity from the right frontal area of the brain (associated with depression, anxiety and worry) to the left, which has been found to correlate with feelings of happiness, excitement, joy and alertness.

Smile your way to happiness.

success and motivation

The secret to boosting your mood could be as simple as making yourself smile. A Michigan State University study found that workers who smiled as a result of cultivating positive thoughts exhibited improved mood and less withdrawal. Fake smiling, on the other hand, resulted in worse moods and withdrawal from work.

Practice gratitude.

gratitude

Cultivating thankfulness and gratitude is a scientifically-backed way to increase happiness, and it’s firmly within your control to choose to be more grateful.

Grateful people tend to appreciate simple pleasures, defined as “those pleasures in life that are available to most people,” according to a report in the Journal of Social Behavior and Personality.

Pursue happiness, find happiness — and success.

success

Conventional thinking has it that pursuing success will lead to happiness, but research has shown that it may be just the opposite. Pursuing Happiness leads not only to happiness itself, but also to success, according to Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage.

In his 12 years researching happiness at Harvard, Achor found that cultivating a positive mindset could boost well-being and improve workers’ performance on many levels, from productivity to creativity and engagement.

“People who cultivate a positive mind-set perform better in the face of challenge,” he wrote in Harvard Business Review. “I call this the ‘happiness advantage’ — every business outcome shows improvement when the brain is positive.”

Let yourself be Happy.

happiness and dancing

Bronnie Ware, a palliative care nurse who spent years working with elderly people on their deathbeds, noticed a common theme that came up repeatedly among her patients at the end of their lives: They regretted not “letting” themselves be happy.

Ware, the author of The Top Five Regrets Of The Dying, wrote in a Huffington Post blog:

Many did not realize until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again … Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

Practice compassion.

restoring balance

Want to increase your brain’s capacity for happiness? Try meditating on compassion. Brain-scanning studies on French monk Matthieu Ricard found that when he was practicing Loving-kindness meditation, his brain produced gamma waves “never reported before in the neuroscience literature.” Ricard has the largest capacity for happiness ever recorded, thanks to neuroplasticity.

“Meditation is not just blissing out under a mango tree but it completely changes your brain and therefore changes what you are,” Ricard told the New York Daily News.

Knowledge is power,
and LIFE.

Speak From The Heart

Speaking from an open Heart
can be the strongest move of all.

by Rick Hanson, Ph.D.,

What’s Your Heart Say?
The Practice
Speak from the heart.
Why?

One Christmas I hiked down into the Grand Canyon, whose bottom lay a vertical mile below the rim. Its walls were layered like a cake, and a foot-high stripe of red or gray rock indicated a million-plus years of erosion by the Colorado river. Think of water – so soft and gentle – gradually carving through the hardest stone to reveal great Beauty. Sometimes what seems weakest is actually most powerful.

In the same way, speaking from an open Heart can seem so vulnerable yet be the strongest move of all. Naming the Truth – in particular the facts of one’s experience, which no one can disprove – with simplicity and sincerity, and without contentiousness or blame, has great moral force. You can see the effects writ small and large, from a child telling her parents “I feel bad when you fight” to the profound impact of people describing the atrocities they suffered in Kosovo or Rwanda.

I met recently with a man whose marriage is being smothered by the weight of everything unsaid. What’s unnamed is all normal-range stuff – like wishing his wife were less irritable with their children, and more affectionate with him – but there’s been a kind of fear about facing it, as if it could blow up the relationship. But not talking is what’s actually blowing up their relationship – and in fact, when people do communicate in a heartfelt way, it’s dignified and compelling, and it usually evokes support and open – heartedness from others.

How?

This week, look for one or more opportunities to speak from your heart. Pick a topic, a person, and a moment that’s likely to go well.

Before you talk:
· Ground yourself in good intentions. To discover and express the truth, whatever it is. To help yourself and the other person.

  • Get a basic sense of what you want to say. Focus on your experience: thoughts, feelings, body sensations, wants, memories, images, the dynamic flow through awareness; it’s hard to argue with your experience, but easy to get into wrangles about situations, events, the past, or problem-solving.
    .
  • Be confident. Have Faith in your sincerity, and in the Truth itself. Recognize that others may not like what you have to say, but you have a right to say it without needing to justify it; and that saying it is probably good for your relationship.

When you speak:
· Take a breath and settle into your body.

  • Recall being with people who care about you. (This will help deepen your sense of inner strength, and warm up the neural circuits of wholeheartedness.)
  • Soften your throat, eyes, chest, and heart. Try to find a sense of goodwill, even compassion for the other person.
  • Bring to mind what you want to say.
  • Take another breath, and start speaking.
  • Try to stay in touch with your experience as you express it. Don’t get into any sense of persuasion, justification, defensiveness, or problem-solving. (That’s for later, if at all.) Be direct and to the point; when people truly speak from the heart, they often say what needs to be said in a few minutes or less; it’s the “case” wrapped around the heart of the matter that takes all those extra words.
  • Keep coming back to the essential point for you, whatever it is (especially if the other person gets reactive or tries to shift the topic). And feel free to disengage if the other person is just not ready to hear you; maybe another time would be better. “Success” here is not getting the other person to change, but you expressing yourself.
  • As appropriate, open to and encourage the other person speaking from the heart, too.

And afterwards: know that whatever happened, you did a good thing. It’s brave and it’s hard (especially at first) to speak from the Heart. But so necessary to make this World a better place.

Yes, You Matter

Okay, so you want acknowledgement. That’s fine. But no one can tell you how you should feel, especially you.

Jennifer Tapias Derch

Everyone wants to feel validated. Who doesn’t want to be seen and heard? Yet, much of the time, you may well feel just the opposite—you may feel judged, denied, or completely ignored. You want to matter. Of course, validation does not mean that every person will agree with what you have to say; it just means that you are being acknowledged and you are accepted, regardless of your point of view. Looking for validation can certainly go too far, perhaps in the form of approval-seeking or people-pleasing. However, it all starts with self-validation. To accept yourself, you cannot push feelings away or negate yourself. You are who you are. And that is OK.

Validation Starts With You

Accept your internal experience and build your identity.

By Karyn Hall, Ph.D.

Validation is the expression of honest understanding. It’s the acknowledgment of others, of their thoughts, feelings, and actions. And to do a better job of validation, you must start with yourself. Such self-validation is understanding your internal experience and your actions.

This doesn’t mean that whatever you think or feel is justified. There are many times when you will have thoughts that surprise you, that don’t reflect your values or fit what you know to be true. Validation doesn’t mean approval, it’s about understanding. If you fight your thoughts and feelings, or judge yourself for having them, then you may well become emotionally distressed. You’ll also fail to learn about yourself.

Validating your thoughts and emotions will help you stay calm and manage yourself more effectively. Validating yourself will help you accept yourself, which will lead you to a stronger identity and better skills at regulating intense emotions.

Self-validation also helps you find wisdom. If you accept that you are feeling envy and you understand the reason, there is an opportunity to learn from your experience. What is it that you envy? What does it mean for you?

Psychologist Marsha Linehan, the creator of dialectical behavior therapy and a professor emeritus at the University of Washington in Seattle, defined six levels of validation. The steps below are based on her ideas.

Be Here Now

Mindfulness and self-validation go hand in hand. Be mindful of your emotions without pushing them away; this means grounding yourself and not dissociating, daydreaming, suppressing, or numbing your emotions. Being present means listening to yourself, even if feeling the pain of sadness, hurt, and fear is challenging.

Avoiding emotions can result in negative consequences, while accepting emotions allows them to pass, and allows you to build resilience. Being present validates that you matter, that you have the strength to feel, that you can experience the physical sensations that are part of your emotional terrain.

Engage in Honest Reflection

Accurate reflection means acknowledging your internal state and labeling it accurately. When you observe and describe your interior experience accurately, you don’t make interpretations—you stick to the facts. What emotions are you experiencing? What triggered the thoughts and emotions you are having? Where do you feel sensations in your body and what actions do you want to take? Labeling your experience with accurate reflection can help you regulate your emotions.

This thought, I’m a loser, and no one wants to spend time with me, does not state the observable facts of your experience. Instead, observe and describe your experience: I feel angry and disappointed. It started yesterday when my friend canceled lunch again. I sense tightness in my stomach, so maybe there is fear as well.

Guess Your Emotions

Sometimes you won’t be sure what you are feeling or thinking. In these situations, ask yourself: Am I feeling _____? If someone else were in this situation, they would probably feel ____.

You might also guess your emotions by looking at the actions you want to take. If you want to hide, perhaps you are feeling shame. Maybe you are thinking shameful thoughts. Where are your physical sensations? Fear, for example, is often felt in the throat. Guessing your emotions and thoughts based on the information you have will help you learn more about yourself.

Remember the Past

Sometimes you will have thoughts and feelings that are based on events that happened in your past. Maybe you’re afraid when people argue, because past arguments scared you. You could validate yourself with this thought: It’s understandable that I am afraid of arguments because when I was young my parents hurt each other during conflict.

Normalize Your Feelings

Sometimes people who have intense emotions don’t see themselves as normal. Everyone has emotions. No one is happy all the time. It’s normal to feel painful emotions. You feel sad when you didn’t get that job you wanted, and this is commonly felt by others as well. It’s normal. Instead, self-validate: Of course I feel sad. I really wanted that job.

Be Genuine

Do not lie to yourself. Don’t pretend to be someone you aren’t. Rejecting who you are is high-level invalidation and can be damaging. An important distinction: Who you are is different from what you do. You are not your behavior. Changing some behaviors that are invalid may alleviate some suffering that you experience.
Self-validation is critical for living with intense emotions. It is part of forming relationships and thriving. Practice and more practice will help you self-validate more naturally.

Does validation on social media tell you what type of person you are?

By Martin Graff, Ph.D.

If you use social media, do you consider these statements to be accurate about you, or are you unconcerned or uninfluenced by others online?

The attention I get from social media is important to me. I consider someone to be popular based on the number of likes they get. I wish I could gain more likes online.

In a study my colleagues and I conducted, we hypothesized that personality and self-esteem affect how people use social media. We asked participants to respond to statements that showed how they appreciate being valued online.

We received responses from 332 people between the ages of 18 and 78; a third were men and two-thirds were women. Seventy percent of our responders reported posting online one to five times daily on up to 10 types of social media.

Our survey measured self-esteem and the personality characteristics of extraversion (sociable, outgoing), agreeableness (warm, sympathetic), conscientiousness (organized, disciplined), neuroticism (irritable, moody), and openness (imaginative, unconventional).

We found several ways in which types of validation in social media were related to self-esteem and personality:

Effort in Social Media:

Characterized by asking for likes or even paying to get more validation, this effort was related to low levels of agreeableness, trust, warmth, and modesty.

Taking Action:

This included deleting a post that did not receive many likes and was related to low levels of self-esteem, low conscientiousness, and low openness.

Honest Posting:

These people always presented themselves accurately online. Unconcerned with getting likes, they seemed to be more extraverted, sociable, and outgoing.

Blindness in Social Media:

Examples: Accepting friend requests from people they didn’t know or posting information inconsistent with their beliefs just to gain likes. This was related to low levels of conscientiousness, as well as impulsiveness, and being disorganized.

Positive Posting:

I always post positive things about myself. This was related to self-esteem, having confidence in one’s abilities, and low levels of neuroticism.

Finally, we found that none of the personality or self-esteem measures were related to whether receiving likes and validation improved one’s mood or self-esteem.

Jennifer Tapias Derch

Don’t Feel Grateful? That’s Okay

Forced Gratitude can make you feel worse.

By Sarah Epstein

There is a lot of pressure to feel grateful for health and well-being right now. After all, so many others are in terrible pain. Gratitude can increase our level of satisfaction, help us see beyond a crisis, and train the mind to look for positives. Yet the pressure to feel grateful can turn gratitude from a source of relief into a source of self-torment. Gratitude is great, but not when it’s guilt-ridden.

What does guilty gratitude sound like?

I should feel grateful…
because others have it so much worse
because I have a roof over my head
because I don’t have cancer
because I have so much support
because I made it this far

Yet forcing gratitude during a crisis does not work. People who try to guilt themselves into a grateful state by comparing their pain to others’ may unintentionally delegitimize their feelings and worsen rather than improve their mental health. They may feel responsible for feeling grateful rather than anxious, stuck, hurt, or overwhelmed. The attempt to feel grateful becomes a way to dismiss or reject uncomfortable feelings without honoring or addressing them. Gratitude becomes the weapon of choice against the self.

Signs That You Are Misusing Gratitude

Your tone is accusatory; gratitude becomes a rebuke. You yell at yourself: Feel grateful! You feel as if you’ve failed when you struggle to find that gratitude. You probably use the word should to tell yourself how to feel.

You decide you don’t deserve to feel pain. You compare your lot to others and conclude that your situation does not warrant painful feelings. Introducing gratitude becomes an exercise in ranking pain.

You try to replace your painful feelings with forced gratitude. Gratitude becomes a way to tell yourself that you’re not entitled to your feelings.

None of this is to say that gratitude should not be cultivated as a practice—it can be life-changing when done well and particularly helpful during a crisis.

Here are rules for using gratitude when everything feels overwhelming.

Allow yourself to feel your feelings: The first rule of gratitude is to allow yourself to be in pain, even if things could be worse, even if others have it worse, even if you’ve felt worse in the past. Allow yourself to feel and move through those feelings instead of immediately throwing gratitude at them to make them go away. You cannot successfully shame yourself out of your feelings by telling yourself to be grateful. Instead, gratitude can supplement those things and perhaps gently replace them over time, though not through force.

Validate your feelings: Before you invite in gratitude, validate your own feelings. Tell yourself that your feelings are OK. Notice them, notice where you feel them in your body, and welcome them. There can be no true gratitude without validation. If you try to force gratitude on yourself before reaching this point, you may end up feeling bullied into feeling something different. It will backfire.

Make room for both difficult feelings and gratitude: Gently allow yourself to see if you feel the capacity for gratitude alongside your other difficult feelings. Perhaps it sounds like: I feel so overwhelmed. I also feel really grateful that I have support to help me through it. Or perhaps it sounds like: This is so hard. I’m glad I have the safety net to get me through this tough stretch while I figure things out.

Try again later: Maybe in a moment of overwhelming hurt, you cannot access gratitude. That’s OK. When the crisis subsides and things feel calmer, try again to access it in a more healthy way.

Gratitude is gentle, positive, and welcoming; it should not bludgeon a person or induce shame. As we work our way through this moment in time, you may notice the pressure to feel grateful for whatever blessings you have access to. As you hear those messages and perhaps try to internalize them, notice whether gratitude has become an ally or another source of pain.

Affirmation Or Validation?

Why validation may be the key to communication.

By Marisa T. Cohen, Ph.D.

When affirming something, you are offering support, or asserting something as fact. There is usually a positive connotation to this, in which one partner agrees with the other regarding their assertion. A husband affirming his wife’s belief that they need to spend more time together as a couple would be agreeing with her statement and holding it as true.

Often, I hear people using the words affirmation and validation interchangeably. Validation, unlike affirmation, does not mean that one person agrees with the other. Rather, to validate someone is to acknowledge and accept their feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. Marsha Linehan notes that validation involves the expression of understanding, legitimacy, and acceptance of another’s experience. Validation does not attempt to alter a person’s experience, but rather accepts it as is.

In one study, college students were exposed to mental math problems and then assigned conditioned responses, either validating ones (I too would feel upset if I were the one completing the task) or invalidating ones (I don’t understand why you would feel that way). The researchers found that validating responses led to better emotion regulation.

For the husband mentioned, he might instead acknowledge and validate his wife’s belief that they need to spend time together. However, it does not necessarily mean that he agrees. Instead, he may feel that spending time apart is more important for their marriage and individual identities. But he has acknowledged and heard her. In this case, validating her with: “I understand that you want us to spend more time together.”

It’s important to realize that not all discussions will reach a mutually agreed upon consensus; however, in the interest of open communication, both partners should be able to express their views.

The Need For Approval

So, we have to like everything about you?

By Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D.

A friend once told me, “No matter what you do, some people won’t like you.” That helped me let go of the need to be liked by everyone. Our concerns about approval are part of being human. We don’t want to go around being hostile, selfish, and disrespectful. Here are some simple techniques you can use to overcome the need for approval.

1. Identify the situation.

This can be the trigger for your concern about what people think. Perhaps you are thinking of making a request of someone that he change his behavior, but you immediately start feeling anxious because of your underlying thoughts and feelings.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of needing approval?

This is the motivational piece for you to examine your assumption that you need approval. What are the costs to you? It may make it difficult for you to be honest; it may make it hard for you to get your needs met; you may worry about what might happen; and you might let people take advantage of you.

3. What negative automatic thoughts are you having?

These can include: She will think I am unfair or mean. She won’t like me. He thinks I am obnoxious. It’s awful when someone doesn’t like me. I can’t stand arguments.

4. What do these thoughts mean to you?

You might think: If she doesn’t like me, then I am wrong. Or I am a bad person. Or you might think: People will talk about me, and I won’t have any friends. These implications may be driving the need for approval.

5. Examine the evidence and the logic of your thoughts.

Are you really a bad person, or wrong, if a person disagrees with you? Perhaps you simply have different information, interpretations, or ideas. Perhaps you are right? If you think people will be upset with you, ask yourself if you have ever disagreed with anyone who still remained a friend.

6. Use the double-standard technique.

If people disagree with you, do you always get extremely upset? Do you write them off? Try to think of yourself as a supportive friend: If your friends don’t like something you say, what advice would you give them? Would you conclude that they are bad? Why would you be more tolerant of other people than you are of yourself?

7. What would you do if they didn’t like you?

To let problems go, put life in perspective. Perhaps you are skillful and respectful in asserting yourself with someone, but now that person doesn’t like what you say. Can you still be with your partner, your family, your friends, and your co-workers? Can you engage in all the activities that you engaged in before? You can do everything you did before. If this particular person doesn’t like what you say, or dislikes you, what difference does it make?

8. How will you feel about this in the future?

We often get upset about something happening in the moment, but we fail to realize that all of our emotions are open to change. Have you had the experience that you were unhappy with an interaction—say, three months ago—but now you can’t even remember it? That’s because other experiences have taken over, you have put it in perspective, and you have let it go.

9. Normalize disapproval.

We often get upset about things that happen to everyone. Who has the approval of every person they meet? We all experience disapproval—and still survive and thrive. Why should you be the one person who has to have universal approval?

10. Practice being assertive.

If you are concerned about disapproval, go to a store and request a 50 percent discount on something you have no intention of purchasing. The clerk will look at you as if you are crazy. You might say, “I thought I could get a bargain today.” By purposefully collecting harmless disapproval, you will come to realize that nothing important changes, except that now you are able to assert yourself.

You can be diplomatically assertive and sensitive to others and still do things some people won’t like. The only way to get through life is to tolerate some disapproval.

“I’m sorry, but you have cancer.” These words from a doctor introduce fear into the heart of any patient.

The good news is that supportive nutrition therapy can significantly increase cancer patients’ quality and length of life and improve their chances for a complete remission. Better yet, a healthy lifestyle that includes a wholesome diet, sufficient exercise, positive attitude and toxin avoidance can prevent up to 90 percent of cancers.

Now for the bad news. Conventional medicine does not have a high success rate with the disease. By the turn of this century, cancer will become the leading cause of death in America. During the past 26 years, NCI spent $37 billion in research with a resulting increase in cancer incidence and deaths. Clearly, medicine cannot produce a “magic bullet” to cure cancer while patients go on living on soft drinks, pollutants and stress.

On December 23, 1971, President Richard M. Nixon confidently declared a “war on cancer” and promised a cure by the 1976 Bicentennial. However, as late as 1991, a group of 60 noted physicians and scientists called a press conference and made the following statement: “The cancer establishment confuses the public with repeated claims that we are winning the war on cancer. … Our ability to treat and cure most cancers has not materially improved.” [1] In this article, I will briefly explore the reasons for failure in combating cancer and give rational directions to improve outcomes for the 2.5 million cancer patients being treated in America today.

Developing A Strategy

In early research, the techniques of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy looked like the best approaches to cancer. The goal was to cut away, burn and poison the abnormal cells. While such therapies can temporarily reduce tumor burden, they do not cure cancer. Only by changing the underlying cause of the disease can a cancer patient expect to return to health.

Doctors now know that eliminating cancer begins with changing the conditions that support tumor growth, not just applying cytotoxic therapies to kill cancer cells. Here’s an analogy: Fungus grows on the bark of a tree due to the favorable conditions of heat, moisture and darkness. You can cut, burn and poison a fungus all you want, but as long as favorable conditions persist, it will flourish. Similarly, cancer develops in a human when conditions are right. Documented factors that favor tumor formation include toxic burden, immune suppression, malnutrition, mental depression and elevated blood glucose. More speculative causative factors include reduced pH, dysbiosis (abnormal bacteria in the gut), hypothyroidism, insufficient gland and organ output (i.e., insufficient DHEA, enzymes and hydrochloric acid) and parasites. Unless we correct these cancer inducers, cytotoxic therapies are doomed to failure.

The best way to correct the problem is through therapeutic use of nutrients. But, as a word of caution, while nutrition should be an integral component of every cancer patient’s treatment program, nutrition therapy alone is probably insufficient for most advanced cancers. The reasons for using therapeutic nutrition in cancer treatment are numerous and include the following:

Malnutrition:   Undernourishing your body can have devastating, even fatal consequences. In fact, more than 40 percent of cancer patients die from malnutrition, not the cancer itself. [2] Cancer induces a metabolic abnormality akin to getting your car stuck on ice–the wheels spin and the engine guzzles gas, but you don’t go anywhere. Yet, cancer patients often eat less food than they did before their illness began. One reason is that tumors induce a hypermetabolic state and secrete a substance called cachectin that suppresses appetite. Chemo and radiation therapy can also cause anorexia and alone are sufficient biological stressors to induce malnutrition. [3] Because cancer patients need more calories than healthy people, they eventually waste away, a condition called cachexia. Weight loss increases the mortality rate for most types of cancer, while also lowering the positive response to chemotherapy. [4]

In addition to proper eating, nutrient-dense “shakes,” canned nutritional formulas, protein powders, hydrazine sulfate, enzymes, DNA loading and other therapies can reverse the weight loss that consumes far too many cancer patients. If cancer patients lose 10 percent or more of their body weight after cancer diagnosis, all other nutrition strategies are irrelevant until this problem is addressed. A word of caution: Do not fill up a fragile stomach with vitamin pills when nutrient-dense foods are more important.

Optimum nutrition:   Eating dense concentrates of nutrients can enhance the effectiveness of medical therapy. Some people worry that antioxidants such as vitamins C, E and beta-carotene might neutralize the tumor-killing ability of chemo and radiation, which are pro-oxidant therapies. This doesn’t happen. In both human and animal studies, antioxidants enhance the tumor kill of chemotherapy and radiation while protecting the host tissue from harm. [5]

In fact, antioxidants greatly benefit chemo and radiation therapies. While both treatments can reduce tumor burden, they can also harm normal tissues such as the heart, kidneys, intestinal lining and bone marrow (the cradle of the immune system). Fortunately, vitamins can often help spare normal tissues. For instance, animal studies show that vitamin E protects the heart against the damaging effects of adriamycin chemotherapy while allowing the drug to continue its cancer-fighting effects. [6] Vitamin E also has a unique and unexplained anti-cancer activity. [7] In mice with induced liver cancer, vitamins C and K augmented the tumor kill while reducing organ damage from six different chemotherapeutic drugs. [8] Vitamin A (isotretinoin) enhanced the tumor-killing capacity of the chemotherapy drugs vincristine and daunorubicin in 24 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [9] In animal studies, injections of vitamin C prior to radiation therapy provided host protection without affecting tumor kill, suggesting that vitamin C given prior to radiation therapy can help patients tolerate the treatment. [10]

Preliminary human studies also show promise for vitamin therapy. Finnish oncologists used high doses of nutrients (to replenish deficiencies identified by blood tests) along with chemotherapy and radiation for lung cancer patients. Normally, lung cancer carries a poor prognosis, with a paltry 1 percent expected survival after 30 months of routine medical treatment. In this study, however, eight of 18 patients (44 percent) who were given nutritional supplements were still alive 72 months after chemo and radiation therapy. The oncologists concluded that patients who started antioxidant therapy earliest were most likely to live longer or experience remission [11].

Bolstered immune functions:   The immune system is a complex collection of 20 trillion diversified cells that patrol the body looking for invaders such as bacteria, virus and tumor cells. When doctors say, “We think we got it all,” they mean, “There are less than a billion cancer cells in your body that are undetectable with current diagnostic equipment. Now we must rely on your intact immune system to find and destroy the remaining cancer cells.” Fortunately, an abundance of data links nutrient intake to the quality and quantity of immune factors that fight cancer. [12]

Selectively starving tumors:   Whereas essential nutrients support the patient’s healthy tissues, junk foods can nourish the cancer. For instance, sugar intake feeds the cancer and suppresses a patient’s immune system. Tumors are primarily what are called “obligate glucose metabolizers,” meaning they must feed on sugar. [13] Americans consume about 20 percent of their calories from refined sugar, but don’t tolerate it well due to stress, obesity, sedentary lifestyles and low chromium and fiber intake. An epidemiological study of cancer victims in 21 countries suggests that high-sugar intake is a major risk factor for breast cancer. [14] When animals were fed diets equal in calories from carbohydrates, the group eating more simple sugars developed significantly more mammary tumors than the group fed complex carbohydrates (starches). [15]

Cancer patients can blunt the rise in blood glucose by eating foods with a low glycemic index (meaning the sugars are more slowly absorbed into the bloodstream). From best to worst, glycemic indices are meats, nuts, seeds, oils, vegetables, legumes, fructose, whole grains, refined starches (i.e., white flour), fruit and refined sugar. It is best for cancer patients to avoid white sugar and sweet foods in general and never to eat anything sweet by itself. For instance, a patient may only eat a small piece of fresh fruit after a mixed meal of protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber and fat.

Nutrients Slow Cancer

In early nutrition research, nutrient functions were linked to classical nutrient deficiency syndromes–vitamin C and scurvy, vitamin D and rickets, niacin and pellagra. Now nutrition researchers are finding various levels of functions for nutrients. For example, while 10 IU of vitamin E is considered the RDA, 800 IU was shown to improve immune functions in healthy older adults. [16] While 10 mg of vitamin C will prevent scurvy in most adults and the RDA is 60 mg, 300 mg was shown to extend life span in males by an average of six years. [17]

RDAs apply to healthy people and don’t cover special nutrition needs that arise from metabolic disorders, chronic diseases, injuries, premature birth or drug therapies. [18] Most cancer patients probably need far more than the RDA of a variety of nutrients to aid recovery. Many nutritional factors both directly and indirectly help fight tumor cells. Mechanisms include preventing carcinogen formation, increasing detoxification, inhibiting abnormal cell replication controlling expression of malignancy, blocking precancerous cell divisions, and enhancing cell-to-cell communication. [19]

Oncologists at West Virginia Medical School in Morgantown randomized 65 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder into two groups. Group one received a one-a-day vitamin supplement providing the RDA, plus placebo pills. Group two received the RDA supplement plus 40,000 IU of vitamin A, 100 mg of vitamin B6, 2,000 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E and 90 mg of zinc. At 10 months, tumor recurrence was 80 percent in the control group (RDA supplement) and 40 percent in the megavitamin group. Five-year projected tumor recurrence was 91 percent for controls and 41 percent for the megavitamin group. Essentially, high-dose nutrients cut tumor recurrence in half. [20]

In a non-randomized clinical trial at the Hoffer Clinic in Victoria, British Columbia, Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., and Linus Pauling, Ph.D., instructed cancer patients to follow a diet of unprocessed food low in fat, dairy and sugar coupled with therapeutic doses of vitamins and minerals. All 129 patients received oncology care. The control group of 31 patients who did not receive nutrition support lived an average of less than six months. The 98 cancer patients who did receive the diet and supplement program were categorized into three groups: poor responders (19 patients or 20 percent) who lived an average of 10 months–a 75 percent improvement over the control group; good responders (47 patients or 48 percent), who had various cancers including leukemia, lung, liver and pancreas and who lived an average of six years; best responders (32 women or 33 percent) who had reproductive organ cancers (breast, cervix, ovary, uterus) and lived more than 10 years. In other words, nutrition support increased average life span by 12 to 21 fold for 80 percent of these patients [21].

Retrospective analyses show that therapeutic nutrition helps cancer patients. Of the 200 cancer patients studied who experienced “spontaneous regression,” 87 percent made a major change in diet (eating more vegetables and less meat), 55 percent used some form of detoxification (herbs, enemas, chelation therapy or other methods) and 65 percent used nutritional supplements. [22] Of 1,467 patients with pancreatic cancer who made no dietary changes, 146 (10 percent) were alive after one year, while 12 of the 23 matched pancreatic cancer patients (52 percent) consuming macrobiotic foods (primarily brown rice and vegetables with small amounts of fish and poultry) were still alive after one year. [23]

Parting Comments

The real reason for our losing battle with cancer lies in erroneous thinking. We are physical and metaphysical beings who must become part of the cure, just as surely as we are a part of the disease. We must embrace rational cancer therapies proven both effective and minimally damaging to normal tissues and we should encourage synergism between restorative therapies like nutrition and restrained conventional cancer intervention.

and to the Stars we return.”

“I declare
this World is so Beautiful
that I can hardly believe
it exists.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson observed:
“Though we travel the World over
to find the Beautiful,
we must carry it with us
or we find it not.”

Please allow me to share thoughts
of a man I deeply admire.
His writings have
changed many lives, including mine,
and brought about a deep and personal
awareness and precious insights that
could only have come through him
from God.

John Muir
was America’s most famous and influential
naturalist, conservationist, author,
environmental Philosopher,
early advocate of wilderness preservation,
helping to establish Yosemite and Sequoia
National Parks
and co-founder of the Sierra Club.

He experienced in Nature
a Religious Ecstasy.
Before the Majesty of Natural Beauty,
he found himself humble
before the Power of God
who Created it
all.

“When one tugs at a single thing in Nature,
he finds it attached to the rest of the World.”
John Muir

The wilderness in the Human Soul

Muir learned to read
from the Divine Manuscript,
the rocks and the trees.
He came to discover complete Freedom,
and had experiences that
seemed timeless and devoid of space.
He felt his body had no weight.
“Life seemed neither long nor short,” he wrote,
“and we take no more heed to save time
or make haste than do the
trees and stars.”

He entered the Eternal now
and experienced days
that seemed to have
neither end nor beginning.
John discovered an Immortality,
and experienced himself
dissolved into the Landscape.

Everybody
needs Beauty as well as bread,
places to play in and Pray in,
where Nature may heal and give strength
to body and Soul alike.”
John Muir

 God’s first Temples

Muir experienced
the inter-relatedness of all things,
the union of rocks and clouds,
the Humanness of the Landscape,
the wilderness in the Human Soul,
a kinship with the wild Nature
he grew to Love,
a oneness.
One of my favorite thoughts
from John is this:

“A few minutes ago every tree was excited,
bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling,
tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship.
But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent,
their songs never cease.

Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life,
every fiber thrilling like harp strings,
while incense is ever flowing
from the balsam bells and leaves.

No wonder the hills and groves
were God’s first temples,

and the more they are cut down and hewn
into cathedrals and churches,
the farther off and dimmer
seems the Lord himself.”

 The Divine Manuscript

Muir wrote of being struck by
how clean Nature is.
All plants are clean;
all animals are clean.
Of all the living things on the planet,
mankind alone seems dirty.

“The wilderness is a Natural place
to consummate the longings
of the Soul.”

“We are now in the mountains
and they are in us,
kindling enthusiasm,
making every nerve quiver,
filling every pore and cell of us.
Our flesh-and-bone Tabernacle
seems transparent as glass
to the beauty about us,
as if truly an inseparable part of it.”

Humble before the power of God

My Dear Friends,
we are a part
of everything around us.
We are truly
one.
And we are
One with God.

Have I ever felt the way
John Muir describes
his feelings?
Yes,
my Friends,
many times,
daily.

you cannot deny.

“Somethin’ in the wind has learned my name
And it’s tellin’ me that things are not the same
In the Leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There’s a pleasin’ sense of Happiness for me.
There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That Tomorrow will be just the same
for you and me.”

longs for
is waiting patiently
for you.
Now you know
where to find it.

I beg of you,
do not wait
too long.

“The Sun shines not on us but in us.
The rivers flow not past, but through us.
Thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell
of the substance of our bodies,
making them glide and sing.
The Trees wave and the Flowers bloom
in our bodies as well as our Souls,
and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song
of the rocks in the Heart of the mountains is our song,
our very own,
and sings our
Love.”

Top 20 Highest Radiation Cell Phones
(maximum possible SAR “specific absorption rate”
level from phones)

The SAR can be misleading as it measures the maximum radiation a cellphone emits and does not reflect the average amount of radiation it emits. There is accumulating evidence that cellphones that operate on GSM networks emit significantly more radiation than do cellphones operating on CDMA networks.

CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, is the type of cellular network used by the phone companies Verizon and Sprint. GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, is the type used by AT&T and T-Mobile.

The radiation spikes at the beginning of GSM phone calls means that they emit, overall, up to 28 times more radiation than CDMA phones. read more

is a Miracle.

As you hold your breath,
it nurtures you with Light,
fills your every living cell,
resonates with every part
of your body and mind and Soul,
and brings you
into a Beautiful harmony
with everything you seek
in Life.

Upon releasing this Gift
back into the void
from which it came,
you become harmonious
with all other Living things.

The breath you breathe
you share
will every
thing,
and you become one
with all,
again.

The Majesty of Wonder
is Graced
by your every
breath,
by your thoughts and deeds,
and by the Prayers you Pray,
to sow the seeds
of Life ever after,
and LOVE
beyond Belief.

YOU
are the culmination of God’s
creative Desire.

“The LORD God formed Man
from the dust of the ground
and breathed into his nostrils
the Breath of Life,
and man became a Living Being”
Genesis 2:7

Yes,
God
is the Potter,
that molds our Clay
to His Creative Desire.

…………….God is the Potter.

And
your Mother’s Love –
also comes
from Above.
It frees you
from worry and
sleepless nights,
from not knowing
what is right.

A Mother’s Love frees you.

A Mother’s Love
fills us with
Grace,
that will never
die,
with tears
that never dry,
with a Truth
that will never lie,
with LOVE
surging from Her
Fiery Heart,
in whose Loving Shadow
WE
shall always remain.

In the midnight quiet
of a railway station,
a little boy
sits quietly,
almost all alone,
waiting on
the Rock Island Line,
to return him home,
to the farms
of far away Iowa,
a place he knew
as Paradise,
with just his precious
Mother’s voice
to soften the hard edges
of the hardwood bench,
the crisp night air,
the reflecting, echoing walls,
Life.

And I discover,
with the Love
of a Mother,
nothing else
in Life
truly matters.

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause Peace to return to our Hearts.”
Washington Irving

And My Mother’s precious Life
echoes back:

“If I never
would have lived,
I could not
die.
Death
is proof of
Life.
And Life,
my Son,
is proof of Love.”

       ………….It is YOU.

Life is bittersweet
and can be filled
with despair.

Upon a razor’s edge
are we cast
onto the stage
of a Magnificent Day,
that can quickly become
a long night
to stay.

As our minds reflect
upon Human misery,
the mirror of our awareness
shows the World can be
a terrible place.
The History
of the Human race
depicts something far less
than Humanity.

And the fear of death,
not knowing where we go,
or what takes place
after we tell
the brief story of our Life,
can become worse
than death itself.

My Dear Friends,
God dwells in your Heart.
And by His Strength and Grace
alone,
you are able
to overcome adversity.

Marie Anderson

Marie Anderson

How well I remember
finding my precious Mother,
Marie,
lying in her bed,
literally in a pool
of her own blood.
She was rushed
to Baylor Medical Center.

I am in tears
as I share this with you.
They are tears
of Joy
and Thanksgiving.

The Surgeon visited with me
shortly before proceeding with
exploratory surgery.
And he shared with me
a sad truth.
I asked a simple question
and he gave me
the simple truth:
“Is there any Hope?”
No,
he whispered.
“What is the chance
that she can survive?”
None.
And then I searched his eyes
for any sign of Hope
and asked,
“What are her chances?”
He replied with great compassion
in his voice:
There is a one hundred percent
probability
that she will not survive
this night.
We will do what we can.
But, No.
Dr. Anderson, there is
no Hope.
Her condition is such
that she cannot survive
whatever is causing
this very massive loss of blood.
She is dying from cancer.
I’m sorry.”

I do not know how,
but I made my way
to the little Chapel
in the Hospital.

And there I cried
and cried and cried.
I begged God
not to take the Life
of this precious Mother.
I Prayed.
And through the tears
I could barely see.
But through the years,
I could clearly see.
What a Blessing
Life can be
when someone Loves you
as much
as she Loved me.

sun set

 In awesome wonder

I shared the Love
I had felt though the years
with my Lord.
I expressed my deep gratitude,
over and over again,
for her very precious Life.
I shared the need
to have her with me
a little longer.
I told my God,
“I still need her in my Life.
Please, let me have her
a little longer.”

I was in
so much pain.

And then
my Communion
with the Lord
suddenly ended.
A strange feeling,
a quiet Peace,
came to my Heart.
I never felt anything
like it before.

I looked around
and the good Doctor
was quietly standing behind me.
The look on his face
astonished me.
It shocked me.
I could not understand it.
It was a look
I never expected.
Why was he looking
through me
and with such an amazement
in his tired eyes?
He was speechless
for a very long time.
He just looked
into my eyes
and looked through me.

After what seemed like
an Eternity,
he spoke
in a hushed and whispered
voice:
“I could not find anything wrong.
I think she will be all right now.”

I could barely speak.
I thanked him
and he very, very slowly
walked away
into a darkening hallway,
and I walked out of
a very dark night.

My precious Mother lived
for another twelve
and one half years.

Yes,
my tears
are of Joy
and Thanksgiving.

My Precious Lord,
How Great Thou Art.

A Mother’s LOVE
is the reason
why,
the night
Flowers into Morning.

May God grant
that a Man
should one day
be as strong,
as the LOVE
He found
in His Mother’s arms.

A Mother’s Love
is forever found,
in all
the countless generations
to come.

The
Infinite Love of
God
defines a Mother’s Love.
It is now
and forever.
It is
God Incarnate.

Mother,
it is
YOU.

Goodnight.

….A Heavenly masterpiece of a creation.

Our Human Heart Is Very Fragile / What Humanity? / Lowest Radiation Cell Phones / Magnesium: The cure to all disease?

“So we fix our eyes
not on what is seen,
but on what is unseen,
since what is seen is temporary,
but what is unseen is
Eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18

                            He Lights up the dark.

God
speaks
when He says,
nothing
at all.

Without
saying a thing,
He
Lights up the
dark,
Inflames the Heart
with but a
spark.

Often speaking so
loud
we cannot hear
Him,
for our Blessings
are in a crowd,
and with so many there,
they are
deafeningly loud.

                              He says nothing at all.

The air we
breathe,
the Heart
that beats within,
the time
we have to spend,
and all the Love
that greets
each passing moment,
we
cannot abrogate
or rescind.

You get your fill to eat,

May you never take one single breath

God forbid Love ever leave you

I hope you still feel small
when you stand beside the Ocean.

Whenever one door closes,
I hope one more opens.

Promise me that you’ll
give Faith
a fighting chance.

And when you get the choice
to sit it out or dance,

I hope you dance.”

“I believe there are Angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere Up Above.
They come to you and me
in our darkest hours

to show us how to live,
to teach us how to give,

To guide us
with the Light of Love.

When Life held troubled times
and had me down on my knees,

there’s always been someone there
to come along and comfort me.

A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand,
A phone call from a friend,
just to say
I understand.

And ain’t it kind of funny

that someone lights the way
with just a single

 Human Heart Is Very Fragile
– by Aftab Alam

What
Humanity?

It’s the Angelic clad.
Slowly we are removing it,
to be glad.
In the green forest I’ve seen the white,
Darkening days
and nights so bright.

What Peace?

‘Tis for Love and Charity,
Resides within, away from the vanity
That kills poverty and builds Humanity.
Come; adore Peace
to cure its infirmity?

Peace is neither sulky nor bulky,
but agile.
Human Heart that we have
is very
fragile.

                           Very fragile.

Magnesium: The cure to all disease?

Some consumers take products for which there is no medical indication at all – it’s intended as “primary prevention” of a medical condition they believe they can avoid through supplement use. Afraid of macular degeneration? Take lutein. Or worried about Alzheimer’s? Grab some ginkgo biloba. No matter your anxiety, there’s a supplement marketed for you.

One supplement with enduring popularity is magnesium.  It cures cancer. And depression. Throw away your inhalers, because it cures asthma too. Read enough online, and you’ll conclude that magnesium is quite possibly the prevention and the cure to all disease.

Does magnesium have medicinal effects when consumed?

In medical and pharmacy practice, it has several demonstrated uses – the most well known are probably as an antacid or laxative. Good old milk of magnesia (MOM) works because magnesium is partially absorbed – enough stays in the bowel, drawing water into the colon and softening and dislodging anything below.  Injectable magnesium, sold as a prescription drug,  allows large doses to be given quickly, and is used for the treatment of preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced hypertension) and eclampsia (the resulting seizures) – it’s well tolerated and better than other drugs.  Magnesium also seems to be effective for treating some forms of arrhythmia, as well as asthma exacerbations. Some types of migrane and cluster headaches also seem to respond to magnesium supplements.

Magnesium really is everywhere in the body – it’s the 4th most abundant mineral. It’s involved in hundreds of different biochemical reactions and enzyme systems, supporting processes like protein synthesis, cell growth, and energy production. It has roles in nerve function, muscle control, and blood pressure. Even blood sugar regulation depends on magnesium.

Boosting magnesium intake through dietary changes.

Helpfully, foods rich in magnesium are already recommended in diets associated with positive health outcomes: Green vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds are all good sources of magnesium.

Brain cancer incidence, cellphone use, and trends data

Electromagnetic Radiation Safety
by Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D.

Hardell and Carlberg (2015) reported that brain tumor rates have been increasing in Sweden based upon the Swedish National Inpatient Registry data.  Hardell and Carlberg (2017) reported that brain tumors of unknown type increased from 2007-2015, especially in the age group 20-39 years of age. According to the authors, “This may be explained by higher risk for brain tumor in subjects with first use of a wireless phone before the age of 20 years taking a reasonable latency period.”

Every Flower That Is Unfolding / Life Hacks to Help You Lose Weight / Friday: Half Price Books and a Movie (Wonder)

The innate intelligence
of Nature
is far more powerful
and Beautiful

than we can ever
imagine.

Flowers
lift the Spirits
of the Earth.
They sustain Life
with all their
Splendor.

                        They sustain Life.

We can see
every Flower
that is unfolding
as it says
to every Living Thing,
“I Love You”.

And,
as the wind gently whistles
a pale blue sigh
though the lonely leaves
of all the trees,

it plays the music
of Life.

If we listen carefully
we can hear
the wishes of all

Creation
coming True.

To every Living Thing: “I Love You”.

Beauty
is far more than
what it seems.
The constant
motion of Love,
Beauty begins.
And it never really
changes
its meaning.

Life never really wants
more
than Love asks.
And what does Love
ask?
That you care,
that you share,
that
when you are needed,
you are there.

“Yes,
How many times
must a man look up

before he can see the sky?”
Bob Dylan

As the fingers
of our questions
reach
deep into the pockets
of our minds,
we may find
what we are truly
searching for:
our Love
for
every living thing,
and the Love
of God
in
every living thing,
and in us.

Nothing more
could we ask.

“But ask now the Beasts,
and they shall teach Thee;
and the Fowls of the air,
and they shall tell thee:
Or speak to the Earth,
and it shall teach thee:
and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto Thee.
Who knoweth not in all these
that the Hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
In whose Hand is the Soul
of every living thing,
and the breath of all Mankind.
– Job 12:10

                                 What does Love ask?

Watch the Sun
rise in the
eyes
of one you tell
of all the Love
in your Heart.

Yes,
there is Magic
in the moments
we marry,
that are divorced
of time.

We become
so blind
to the deeper
realities of Life.
The Beautiful Creation
you are
is more surprising
and Mysterious
than the feeble mind
of Mankind can
imagine.

Our transitory existence
goes far beyond
the surface dimensions
of Life.

God’s Truth is always joined with Love.

My Dear Friends,
Forgiveness,
Compassion
and Hope
can unleash Mysterious
and powerful forces
within.

Yes,
imperfection
is part of
the very fabric
of Human Life.

But,
Divine Perfection
may be found
in the abundance
of God’s Beauty
and Love.
And it is offered
to us in
each
precious moment
we are on
this Earth.

Knowledge
of God’s Truth
is always
joined
with Love.

Divine Perfection is found in the abundance of God’s Beauty.

The energy in Nature
is never lost,
never destroyed,
only transformed.
And
God’s Love
integrates Eternity.
Nothing
is ever lost,
no tear
is ever forgotten,
and no death
is ever
meaningless.

God
is neither beyond us
or outside of us.
He is
within us.
Each one of us
is a Child
of God.

“Do you not know that
YOU

are a Temple of God
and that the Spirit of God
dwells in you?”
1 Corinthians 3:16

Regardless
of fate’s fearless frown,
God’s Light
pours down.

Ultimate reality
is always Mysterious
and unfathomable.
God’s presence
everywhere
and in all things
is beyond
Human comprehension.
God’s Spiritual Presence
is deep within
the World of matter,
which He
created.

Discover
the Beauty,
the meaning
and the Joy
of your existence.

In the cold and lonely moments
of uncertainty,
the Words of our Lord
will warm your Heart
and free your Loving mind.

When shadows pale
the horizon of your Being,
the place to be
is behind your Loving smile,
and deep in your Faith,
trusting in
the patient Love
of your Creator.

Goodnight.

Beauty is far more than what it seems.

” I come to the Garden alone
While the dew is still on the Roses.
And the Voice I hear falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me,
and He talks with me
,
And He tells me
I am His own.

And the Joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks,
and the Sound of His Voice

Is so sweet that the birds hush their singing.
And the Melody that He gave to me,
Within my Heart is ringing.

And He walks with me,
and He talks with me
,
And He tells me
I am His own.

And the Joy we share as we tarry there,
None other
has ever known.”
Brad Paisley

“If you want to learn to Love better,
you should start with a friend
who you hate.”

Life Hacks to Help You Lose Weight

By Jeffrey Kopman        read more

Several simple life hacks can make a huge difference. Changing your diet and getting regular exercise will always be the best way to get healthy, but these tricks can help too, and won’t take much time or effort.

Most people make many little mistakes throughout the day that can add up to form really unhealthy habits. What are some simple ways to correct these problems?

* Lack of exposure to a varied temperature, whole populations may be prone to develop diseases like obesity,” researchers at Maastricht University Medical Center in The Netherlands wrote in a study published in Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism earlier this year.

The researchers suggested that regular exposure to mild cold could be a simple way to help people lose weight.

*  You should be drinking lots of water. But the best way to do this and lose weight is to replace other drinks with water.

This cheap and effective trick will eliminate sugary and high calorie drinks and replace them with a healthier alternative, according to a study presented at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

“People should drink more water and less sugary, high calorie drinks. It’s a simple way to facilitate weight management,” Brenda Davy, Ph.D., senior author on the study said in a press release. “We found that over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals, three times per day, lost about 5 pounds more than dieters who did not increase their water intake.”

*  People who were given pedometers were more likely to participate in physical activity than those who did not, according to research from The International Association of Applied Psychology.

These devices make it easier to track how much exercise you’re getting and how many more steps you should be taking. Reaching your goals can be made with small adjustments throughout your day, something a pedometer will highlight — instantly.

 *  Using a standing desk for three hours a day will help you burn an extra 144 calories per day, according to a study from the University of Chester in the United Kingdom.

“This is the perfect way for any office-bound worker to achieve the typical New Year’s resolution of wanting to lose weight without changing anything else — how easy is that?” said Dr. John Buckley, Reader of Applied Exercise Science in Health and lead Lecturer for the University’s MSc in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation, in a press release.

* One major cause of the obesity epidemic in America is an inability to control portion sizes. But this easy life hack can help you lose weight without even realizing it.

To make sure your portions are in control, use smaller plates, bowls or glasses. Research shows that people perceive the amount of food they’re eating differently based on the plate size they use.

One cup of food on a small plate looks like more than the same amount of food on a large plate, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

* In addition to changing the size of the plate you eat off of, consider switching the color of the plate as well.

Yes, even the color can affect how much food you’re eating, and either encourage or discourage overeating.

A Cornell University study found that eating food off a plate of contrasting color would help people reduce the amount they are eating. The study called this mind-over-matter practice “critical” for some people’s portion control.

* Here’s one to try right away: Slow down!

No, don’t slow down your exercise — slow down your eating. When you stuff your face full of food in mere moments, you’re not giving your body a chance to feel full until all the food is gone.

Similar to eating off of smaller plates, slowing down your pace will help you feel full without overeating. Eating too quickly leaves you full of more food than necessary.

Recently, researchers found that eating slowly led to increased fullness ratings in both normal-weight and overweight/obese participants, according to a study from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

 * It’s easy to get in the habit of paying for everything with a debit or credit card, just like it’s easy to get in the habit of eating and ordering too much food.

Paying with cash will serve as a psychological trick to keep your wallet full and your stomach just full enough.

People who pay with cards spent far more at Fast Food Restaurants ($4.50 compared to $7.00) than those who paid with cash, according to data from NerdWallet.

Similarly, people who paid with cash at grocery stores made smarter food choices, partially because they didn’t impulse buy junk food, according to a study published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

Synopsis

Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie Pullman becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

God’s Love is Painted in the Sky / Five Positive Effects of Kindness / Friday Trip: F. W. ZOO

God’s Love is painted in the Sky.

Serenity
is what you contemplate,
when Pray you speak
and peer through Heaven’s Gate,
to find the Soul
filled with Love,
and your Spirit
set free
of all hate.

“You will seek me and find me
when you seek me
with all your Heart.”

– Jeremiah 29:13

When Home
we should have been
yesterday,
and tomorrow
is too late,
Today
arrives just in time,
to be all
mine,
and celebrate.

Life
is but a brief moment
in space,
only one
singular, very tiny speck
in Time,
but a mere trace.
But YOU,
by the Grace
of One Infinitely
in Love,
will find Time
never reaching an
end.

His Love sets in the evening of your Heart.

God’s Love
is painted in the Sky,
and in the teardrops of joy
in your eyes,
in the Greatest Story
ever told,
and in the arms
of those
you wanted to hold,
who will never
let you go.

God keeps
the Promise of Morning,
as the Glow of His Love
sets in the evening of your
Heart.

There is nothing
more Beautiful
than when
His Work is done,
and celebration
is in the setting Sun.
To behold such Beauty
and bask in the Glory
when day is done,
is exactly
where you belong.

He signs
each Work of Art
that is our day.
His Signature in the Sky
is Beauty only equaled
by you or I.

Remember this day,
the Gift God gave to you,
and Pray.
And always know,
there is no longing
for the past,
when you live
in someone’s Heart
today.

Who we are
and all we know,
we can choose to give away,
so that we may
forever live
in the Heart of another,
and begin our journey

through Eternity
to find a dream

come true.

Let you Heart
govern your head,
and bid farewell
to all the things
you do not
Love.

“Morning glory and midnight sun.
Time we’ve learned to sail above.
Time won’t change
the meaning of one Love

Ageless and ever,
evergreen.”

– Barbra Streisand, Paul H. Williams

Many a graveyard
is filled
with thoughts
steeped in deep
regret.
But nary a one
possesses
Love
passed on.

LOVE
never
dies.

Eternity
defined,
Immortality is born
of the vision and the fire
and the memory of you
inside the Heart
of someone
you deeply Love.

“Would you believe me,
if I told you
my yesterday
is your tomorrow.”
Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb, Barry Gibb

I make my own journey
through Eternity.

I keep the memory inside
forever.

To fulfill your destiny,
find the child within
and never, ever
say goodbye.

Goodnight.

Five Positive Effects of Kindness
by David Hamilton, Ph.D.

1. Kindness makes us happier. Dr. Hamilton found that when we do something kind for someone else, we not only feel good, we tap into something deep and profound inside of us that says, “This is who I am.” Biochemically, levels of the brain’s natural versions of morphine, which we know as endogenous opioids, are increased. They cause elevated levels of dopamine in the brain and so we get a natural high, often referred to as “Helper’s High.”

2. Kindness gives us healthier Hearts. Acts of kindness are often accompanied by emotional warmth, which produces the hormone oxytocin in the brain and throughout the body. It plays a significant role in cardiovascular health, causing the release of nitric oxide, which dilates (expands) the blood vessels. This reduces blood pressure.

3. Kindness slows aging. Two culprits that speed the aging process are free radicals and Inflammation – both of which can result from making unhealthy lifestyle choices. Remarkable research shows that oxytocin reduces levels of free radicals and inflammation and slows aging at the root level. Also free radicals and inflammation play a major role in heart disease, so this is another reason kindness is good for the Heart.

There have also been references in scientific journals regarding the strong link between compassion and the activity of the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve, as well as regulating heart rate, also controls inflammation levels in the body.

4. Kindness improves relationships. Kindness reduces the emotional distance between people causing us to feel more “bonded.” It’s something that is so strong in us that it affects us at the genetic level. We are wired for kindness. The stronger the emotional bonds within groups, the greater the chances of survival, and so ‘kindness genes’ were etched into the human genome. When we are kind to each other, we feel a connection and new relationships are forged, or existing ones are strengthened.

5. Kindness is contagious. When we’re kind, we inspire others to be kind. Studies show that it actually creates a ripple effect that spreads outward to our friends and beyond – to “3 degrees of separation.” Just as a pebble creates waves when it is dropped into a pond, so acts of kindness ripple outward touching others’ lives and inspiring kindness everywhere the wave goes.

An Amazing Story of Kindness
When A.J. Star met former University of Alabama quarterback A J McCarron, his life changed forever – from despair to belonging and purpose. Through one act of kindness by McCarron, a disabled young man’s life was forever changed.  We are indeed “our brother’s keeper.”  It may take us out of our way a bit or cost us a little time and effort,
but this is what Life is all about – Loving others.
