Remembering
Werner Bendorf
.
There are many stories to tell.
And our Children Love to hear them.
Some tell of Hope, survival and salvation,
Some of Love everlasting.

As I stood at grave of a man I deeply admired and Loved, beyond Belief, I paused to reflect upon the meaning of his Life, and mine. He first appeared to me at the tender age of ten. His name, Werner Bendorf, and his Life is forever engraved in my memory and alive in my Heart.

He still lives in my Life, day by day, between every beat of my Heart, he smiles, he laughs, he is vibrant in my memory and still shares his Love.

My Heart continues to beat because of his deep and abiding Love, because the depth of his Compassion was far greater than anything I had ever known.

He became the Father I never knew.
He was a Father to many young Souls,
and a Savior to me.

Now, into the mix of Life and Living, arrived a truly remarkable man, a new Scoutmaster, Werner Bendorf. He was much more remarkable than I ever realized at the time, and was to me, a Gift from God and my personal Savior.

And his Story is both remarkable and unbelievable. And I would Love to share it with you.

“I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness,

But if you focus on your family,
the needs of others, your work,
meeting new people,
and doing the very best you can,
Happiness will find you.”

In growing up, I thought Life was difficult. But I had no idea what difficult meant. Werner shared with me stories from his Life. Then I knew what the word meant. And I became Truly Grateful for the Blessings bestowed upon me by my precious Mother, Marie, and Werner and Donald Graves, Billy Earl Graves, Bruce and Sid Curry, Marshall Alexander, Richard Fletcher, Lester Kuperman, Roger Carter and Allen Bendorf and so very many others.

In recognizing the seemingly impossible obstacles others have had to overcome to survive, we gain perspective and a depth of appreciation.

Later, when I dry my tears, I will share some of the unbelievable stories Werner told me about surviving the evil of the holocaust. He and his wife hid in the attic of a farm house for over three years. From the floor to the peak of the attic was about 3 & 1/2 feet. And the discomforts only began there. I could not believe they had a baby during this time. But more about their inspiring story of survival later.

My Mother, Marie, and Werner Bendorf, present the Eagle Scout Award to a younger me (age 12).

Remembering Werner always brings my Heart closer to God. The words of John Newton‘s beloved song, “Amazing Grace“ touch each of us with Truth in a Grace of its own. And I now know that “Home” is a place found deeply embedded in my Heart. It is a place where Werner and his family have resided for many years.

And in his Heart, I found something difficult to believe. After all the suffering, the loss of precious Lives and the horror found everywhere, Werner led me to the threshold of something far more powerful than guns and bombs and torture and the pure evil of murderous minds. He opened his wounded Heart to show me his Forgiveness. And I have never been the same since that day filled me with such Amazing Grace.

Please allow me to share thoughts
of a man I deeply admire.
His writings have
changed many lives, including mine,
and brought about a deep and personal
awareness and precious insights that
could only have come through him
from God.

John Muir
was America’s most famous and influential
naturalist, conservationist, author,
environmental Philosopher,
early advocate of wilderness preservation,
helping to establish Yosemite and Sequoia
National Parks
and co-founder of the Sierra Club.

He experienced in Nature
a Religious Ecstasy.
Before the Majesty of Natural Beauty,
he found himself humble
before the Power of God
who Created it
all.

“When one tugs at a single thing in Nature,
he finds it attached to the rest of the World.”

      The wilderness in the Human Soul

Muir learned to read
from the Divine Manuscript,
the rocks and the trees.
He came to discover complete Freedom,
and had experiences that
seemed timeless and devoid of space.
He felt his body had no weight.
“Life seemed neither long nor short,” he wrote,
“and we take no more heed to save time
or make haste than do the
trees and stars.”

He entered the Eternal now
and experienced days
that seemed to have
neither end nor beginning.
John discovered an Immortality,
and experienced himself
dissolved into the Landscape.

needs Beauty as well as bread,
places to play in and Pray in,
where Nature may heal and give strength
to body and Soul alike.”

 God’s first Temples

Muir experienced
the inter-relatedness of all things,
the union of rocks and clouds,
the Humanness of the Landscape,
the wilderness in the Human Soul,
a kinship with the wild Nature
he grew to Love,
a oneness.
One of my favorite thoughts
from John is this:

“A few minutes ago every tree was excited,
bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling,
tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship.
But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent,
their songs never cease.

Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life,
every fiber thrilling like harp strings,
while incense is ever flowing
from the balsam bells and leaves.

No wonder the hills and groves
were God’s first temples,
and the more they are cut down and hewn
into cathedrals and churches,
the farther off and dimmer
seems the Lord himself.”

Muir wrote of being struck by
how clean Nature is.
All plants are clean;
all animals are clean.
Of all the living things on the planet,
mankind alone seems dirty.

Cellphones Really Are Giving You
Cancer

Multiple studies have revealed
that cell phone radiation can cause cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer
classified radio frequency fields ,
including those from cell phones,
as a possible carcinogen in 2011? (source)

The dangers of cell phone use
gained credibility in 2011
when the World Health Organization
admitted that cell phone radiation
may cause cancer.

from 14 different countries,
after reviewing evidence.

CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, is the type of cellular network used by the phone companies Verizon and Sprint. GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, is the type used by AT&T and T-Mobile.

One Heartbeat Away / Rear-View Mirror Thinking / No School The Week

Dedicated
with my deep admiration
and sincere appreciation to
Richard Fletcher.
While in Boy Scout Troop 17
many years ago,
Richard gave countless hours
of patient counseling and friendship
to this very lost young man
at the time in Life
when it was most needed.
.
He encouraged, guided and enabled me to
continue the struggle with Life
and later
enter broadcasting.
.
I become host of the
Bill Anderson Music Show at KSTB radio
and later, Announcer and News Director at KWKC radio,
Co-Host of the Curtis Stone Soul Show,
(I will share more on this eye opening/awakening chapter later)
and Staff Announcer and Host of the
“On The Line” talk show simulcast over
KFMN-FM, KACC and KBLE in Abilene.
These positions in broadcasting
enabled me to work my way through College.

How well I remember
listening to Richard report on the
assassination of President John Kennedy
while tearfully sitting in the High School Library.
His compassionate reporting
inspired me enter the broadcasting profession.

And
when the precious Mother of Don and Billy Graves
asked that I become the Scoutmaster of Troop 57 in Abilene,
since no one was available,
I requested my friend Richard to serve in that capacity until
I became old enough to qualify.
Richard, with me as his Assistant, gladly did so.
Don and Billy continued their Scouting experience
along with many, many others.

And today,
I am very proud of Rev. Donald Graves,
of the Center for Spiritual Living in Tucson,
who delivers powerful messages in dynamic ways:

My name is Carl Phillips.

After a period of reflection several years ago, I realized I was accumulating more in my life.

More things that didn’t matter.

More commitments I wasn’t truly passionate about keeping.

More friction!

So, I started to take some action.  That action has meant:

• I have made good on long term threats to write and have set up this site and authored an expanding list of books.
• I have realized I value freedom and flexibility over the ability to just earn more and seek out ways of living accordingly.
• I have set up my own micro-business.
• I have accumulated less material possessions but enjoyed more (travel and holidays, events, life experiences).
• I have embraced aspects of simplicity, 80/20, minimalism and other powerful concepts into my life.

In short, the quality of my Life has improved. 

I have concerned myself a whole lot less with the need to keep up.  I march (or relax) to my own drum.  I feel happier and like I am on a path of my own setting.  

Many of us spend a large part of our lives looking back.

Thinking about how things once were. How fewer lines we had on our faces yesterday.

What we could do, that we no longer can. What we could have done differently, if given time over again.

Choices made, we would like to unmake. How we could have dealt with a situation better. How we could have changed an outcome.

Whilst time for reflection, learning our lessons and trying not to repeat our mistakes are all to be applauded, too much time spent looking to the past means we start to miss where we are now. This rear-view mirror bias will eventually catch up to us.

Regret is never likely to fuel our best selves but can become a constant companion, if we always look back. And all too often, when we look back, we do so with a rose tinted view. Glorifying the past at the expense of today.

The inconvenient truth, yesterday is gone. Last week and last year are even further gone. We’ll never get them back. Moments in time that have now passed.

We can make peace with that or we can fight it. What we cannot do is alter the fact.

Making Peace with Time
What if we focused our energy on the now instead? What if we committed to learn our lessons but worked on making today the best it can be?

What if we let go of the shackles of the past and concentrated on the present? Investing ourselves fully in this moment.

What if we made peace with time?

What if we let go of our rear-view mirror bias?

Our Dreams Have Wings / Thank You Richard Fletcher / Important Dates

Dedicated
with my deep admiration
and sincere appreciation to
Richard Fletcher.
While in Boy Scout Troop 17
many years ago,
Richard gave countless hours
of patient counseling and friendship
to this very lost young man
at the time in life
when it was most needed.
He encouraged, guided and enabled me to
enter broadcasting and I become host of the
Bill Anderson Music Show at KSTB radio
and Announcer and News Director at KWKC radio,
Co-Host of the Curtis Stone Soul Show,
(I will share more on this eye opening/awakening chapter later)
and Announcer and Host of the
“On The Line” talk show simulcast over
KFMN-FM, KACC and KBLE in Abilene.
These positions in broadcasting
enabled me to work my way through College.

How well I remember
listening to Richard report on the
assassination of President John Kennedy
while tearfully sitting in the High School Library.
His compassionate reporting
inspired me enter the broadcasting profession.

And
when the precious Mother of Don and Billy Graves
asked that I become the Scoutmaster of Troop 57 in Abilene,
since no one was available,
I requested my friend Richard to serve in that capacity until
I became old enough to qualify.
Richard, with me as his Assistant, gladly did so.
Don and Billy continued their Scouting experience
along with many, many others.

And today,
I am very proud of the Rev. Donald Graves,
of the Center for Spiritual Living in Tucson,
who delivers powerful messages in dynamic ways:

            Such Warm Embrace

Within the fragile petals
of a Flower unfolding
its beautiful Gift from Above,

The space you see,
which appears to form
the horizon
of destiny,
in the wink of an eye
will be turning.
The singular moment
in which we live,

As we experience Life
seeping from the veins
