Foods can cause depression or contribute to it, and they can make depression symptoms worse. Learn which foods are the worst foods for depression on HealthyPlace.

Do some foods cause depression? Evidence shows a strong link between diet and depression, and it points to the worst foods for depression. Researchers are studying how food affects the brain, mental health, and specific conditions like depression. Could there be a link between diet and depression? Which foods might cause depression? As nutritionists and neurologists study diet and depression, patterns have emerged. There are distinct foods types that are connected to depression and depression symptoms. When shaping your diet for depression, these are foods to avoid:

  • Saturated and trans fats
  • Simple carbohydrates (refined sugars)
  • Heavily processed foods

Sugary foods, in particular, are especially bad for depression, contributing to its onset, worsening the symptoms, and prolonging someone’s struggle with it. Carbohydrates, both complex and simple, increase serotonin levels. That’s a very good thing for depression because depression involves serotonin levels that are too low. This is why complex carbs like whole grains are good for depression (learn how low carb diets affect depression).

Simple carbohydrates like refined sugars top the list of foods that are bad for depression. Foods like sweets and processed cereals do cause serotonin levels to spike. However, these simple sugars lack substance and nutrients, so they burn up quickly—too quickly to cause lasting benefits of the short-lived serotonin increase. The brain and body experience an abrupt crash, leaving you tired and feeling down. Your symptoms of depression can feel worse following a sugary snack.  The more sugary foods you eat (and drink), the more your blood sugar yo-yos, and the brain suffers.

Sugars are foods that cause depression as well as worsen and prolong it. This includes sugar substitutes as well. “Light” foods are actually an unhealthy choice for the brain. Aspartame, in particular, is an artificial sweetener implicated in depression. As the body breaks it down, aspartame’s molecules decrease serotonin levels that are already low in people with depression.

Saturated fats, trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils), and omega-6 fatty acids (polyunsaturated, cheap oils are a major source), are damaging. They have been shown in studies to contribute to depression and even violent behavior (an issue separate from major depression). Consuming these fats increases fatigue and sluggishness, thus worsening these depression symptoms.

The Worst Beverages for Depression

So often when people think of nutrition, they think food. Beverages tend to be dismissed as things that can help or harm our physical and mental health. However, just because they’re liquid doesn’t mean they don’t affect us. These beverages have been shown to contribute to or worsen depression:

  • Fruit juice (it’s a simple sugar)
  • Soda (also a simple sugar, plus studies link it directly to depression)
  • Alcohol (in excess, it can disrupt sleep, reduce serotonin levels, and negatively impact medication)
  • Coffee (this one’s a maybe—for some, it interferes in sleep, while for others it provides energy and mood boosts. If you can drink coffee, avoid the sugary coffee drinks and coffee sweeteners.)

You’ve seen the categories of foods that may cause depression or worsen the symptoms. For a convenient go-to reference list, here’s a list of some of the worst foods for depression.

  • Processed meats
  • Fried foods
  • Refined cereals
  • Chocolate and other candy
  • Sweet desserts
  • Cookies
  • Doughnuts
  • High-fat dairy products
  • Anything made with white flour (including bread, baked goods, pancakes, etc.)
  • Crackers and other snack food made with partially hydrogenated oils
  • Regular ketchup (it has a significant amount of added sugar or artificial sweeteners)

Unfortunately, when creating a diet containing foods that fight depression, the foods to avoid are the ones that are delicious and many of us are accustomed to eating. When you think about the bigger picture, it might become easier to avoid these foods that are harming brain and body and causing or worsening depression. When you replace them with healthier choices, you are also on your way to replacing depression with energy, motivation, positive emotions, and general mental health and wellbeing. You’re not just avoiding foods; you’re creating a depression-free life.

    Drink tea. Black tea has been shown to reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promote feeling of relaxation. Even the ritual of preparing a cup of tea can be soothing. Furthermore, tea helps to keep you hydrated, which is great for both body and mind.

    Listen to music. Music can help to relieve stress, reduce pain, and enhance your overall quality of life. Try listening to some music when you are feeling stressed to quickly and easily shift your mood.
    • Create a stress-free playlist by selecting upbeat songs that you enjoy.
    • Anytime you feel stress creeping up, pull up your playlist and hit play.

    Take a shower. Showering is a wonderful way to reset, interrupt anxiety, and reduce stress. Particularly if you’ve been stuck in a slump, just hopping in the shower is an excellent way to practice self-care and give your self-esteem a boost. Furthermore, the physical sensations of showering (hot water, happy smells) are excellent for relieving stress.

    Lie with your legs up the wall. “Legs up the wall pose” or “viparita karani” is a wonderful yoga pose for reducing stress. This posture improves circulation to your head and upper body. It also provides rest for your central nervous system.
    • Sit down on the floor and scoot your bottom as close as possible to the wall.
    • Relax your upper body to the floor.
    • Bring your legs up in the air to rest against the wall.
    • Stay here for ten minutes.

    Dance. Dancing is excellent for relieving stress in two ways: it exposes you to upbeat music and it provides all the benefits of exercise. You can achieve these benefits in just a few minutes. Anytime you begin to feel stressed, get up and dance for the length of one song. You can even schedule these mini-dance breaks into your workday to provide a regular release.

    Go for a walk. Any form of aerobic exercise has been shown to calm nerves and improve moods. Walking can be a quick and simple way to receive these benefits. One study shows that a brisk 30 minute walk can be as effective as taking a tranquilizer. But even a 5 or 10 minute stroll can do wonders for relieving stress.
    • Any time you feel stressed out, go for a quick walk.
    • Work your way up to walking for 30 minutes at a time.
    • Do this a few times a week (or even every day) to minimize stress and feel good.

    Give yourself a massage. Massage has been proven to relieve stress and promote well being. But you don’t need to visit a professional! You can get these same benefits by massaging yourself. Start with an easy massage for your eyes. (This is perfect if you have been staring at a computer.)
    • Close your eyes.
    • Place your thumbs under your eyebrows.
    • Apply pressure and move your thumbs in tiny circles, moving towards the outsides of your brows.
    • Continue this movement around your eyes.

    Be present. Anxiety often occurs when we worry about the future or past. Spend a few minutes actively focusing on the present. Choose one simple task, such as washing the dishes or making a cup of tea. Take five minutes to focus intently on that one task, taking in as many details as you can.     Breathe deeply. Taking deep breaths is an excellent way to bring your focus into the present moment. Furthermore, focused breathing has been shown to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure, which both have a profound effect on your stress level.
    • Take 5-10 slow deep breaths.
    • Concentrate on making your inhale the same length as your exhale.
    • Inhale through your nose and exhale through either your nose or mouth.

    State an affirmation. An affirmation is a positive statement about yourself. Affirmations can be written out, or recited in your mind, but they have the greatest impact when spoken aloud.
    • Prepare some affirmations ahead of time. Do you experience anxiety when you try to write? A good option might be “I am a good writer.”
    • When anxiety and stress bubble up for you, calmly state your affirmation.
    • It may help to look in the mirror as you do so.
    • Other affirmation ideas include: I am a good person; I deserve to be happy; I am good at my job; and I am beautiful.

    Laugh. Laughter has been proven to stimulate the production of beta-endorphins in the brain. In fact, even anticipating a laugh can stimulate this production. If you find yourself in a stressful moment, take some time to locate something funny. Even if you don’t laugh out loud, the anticipation might be enough!
    • Look for a humorous video.
    • Recall a funny experience with friends.
    • Listen to a comedy podcast.

    Perform a “body scan.” A body scan is an easy meditative practice that can relieve stress and help you feel grounded. This can be done in as little as 30 seconds. The idea is to bring awareness to each part of the body; not to judge or even to change it.
    • If you have space, lie down on the floor. (If you don’t have space, that’s okay. You can perform the body scan seated in a chair.)
    • Close your eyes and begin by noticing any part of your body that is touching the floor (or chair).
    • Relax any part of your body that is holding tension (usually the jaw, neck, and shoulders).
    • Starting at your toes, begin scanning your body, part by part.
    • Imagine that you are taking a tour of your body, not evaluating, simply observing.
    • End your scan at the top of your head.

If I had to break down the Nerd Fitness Diet into a single sentence, it would go something like this:

“You’re smart and you know what real food is,
so stop eating crap.

You know what real food is: things that grew in the ground, on a tree, came out of the sea, ran on the land, or flew through the air.  Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts are all great examples of REAL food.

On top of that, you know what crap food is: food that comes from a drive-thru window, a vending machine, box, bag, or wrapper.  If it has an ingredient list longer than A Game of Thrones, it’s probably not good for you.  If it started out as real food and then went through fourteen steps to get to the point where you’re about to eat it, it’s probably not good for you.

Use this information and combine it with this mantra: “you can’t outrun your fork“.  When trying to lose weight, feel healthy, and get in shape, 80% (not an exaggeration) of your success or failure will come from how well you eat – which is why this point is one of the cornerstones of the Rebellion.

Mental Preparation

Eat more real food, you must.  Eat less junk food, you will.

I realize this concept is nothing new or revolutionary, but up until now the ability to actually DO IT has eluded you for some reason – your heart wasn’t in it, you got sick, went on vacation, got bored, or just decided that you couldn’t live without certain foods (SPOILER ALERT: you can).

I am NOT a fan of “diets”, detoxes, juice cleanses, or crash-fads that result in vast fluctuations in your body weight and health.  These are the useless solutions that are sold to you in pill form, in MIRACLE DIET INFORMATION ads online, and in super expensive health food stores.

You are smarter than that.

Want to know what I am a fan of?  Small changes that produce big results, like my boy Optimus Prime.

You need to determine for yourself how likely you are to succeed depending on how many changes at once you can deal with:  Some people can radically adjust everything they eat overnight and have no adverse effects. Other people wouldn’t dream of giving up certain foods and the second they go more than a few days without it they become Crankenstein.

That choice is yours.  You need to determine:

  • How averse are you to change?
  • How much weight you think you need to lose?
  • How quickly you need to lose that weight? (wedding? honeymoon? vacation?)
  • How likely are you to stick with your changes?

Like playing a video game, you need to determine what level of difficulty you’re up for.  Sure playing on Difficult gives you less room for error, but it also hones your skills far more quickly and produces more impressive results.  Or maybe you’re cool with playing on easy, because you don’t have to be as neurotic and can have more fun with it.

Long story short: decide what method works best for you based on how radical of a change you’re chasing.  Just don’t overdo it – small permanent successes will beat out massively ambitious failures 100 times out of 100.

If you are just eating better because somebody told you to or because you think you should (but don’t really have a real reason)…every day that you deprive yourself of your favorite foods will seem like torture – you’re going to fail miserably.

Instead, look at the changes you’re making to your diet as small steps on the path to a leveled up live.

You’re not depriving yourself of junk food because you want to suffer, but rather because you want a better life, a happier existence, and/or because you want to set a good example for your children.

As self-help guru Tony Robbins once said (I think it was him anyways): “nothing tastes as good as looking good feels.” 

It’s time to give up that instant gratification you get from eating a donut, a bag of chips, or six slices of pizza.

You are not a slave to your taste buds.

As we’ve learned from the Matrix, you DO have a choice – stop letting the food companies, who have all designed these crappy foods for maximum addictiveness, hold you hostage.

Free your mind, free your taste buds.

I can’t believe I just typed that.

Wait, yes I can. I’m a huge dork.

We’re not looking for instant gratification.  We’re looking for a long life full of epic winning.

Eating for dummies

Okay! You’re finally ready to start making some changes, but you’re not quite sure what you’re going to change or how you’re going to change it.

Hopefully you passed basic math back in the day; if you didn’t and you made it this far in life…I’m not even mad, I’m impressed.  Anyhoo, remember this basic equation:

  • One pound of fat = 3500 calories

If we do some complex synergistic rocket geometric algebra here, we can determine that 3500/7 = 500.

That means that if you are interested in losing ONE pound per week, you need to be eating 500 less calories per day (or burning 500 calories more per day).

Optimally, your 500 calorie deficit per day would come from a combination of increased exercise and decreased calorie intake, but lets just say for today that you’re going to focus on eating 500 less calories per day.

“But Steve, how do I do that?”

Great question, thank you so much for asking!

I HIGHLY recommend you spend the next three to four days tracking your calorie intake.

And when I say track them, I mean track EVERY FREAKING THING YOU EAT.  Yeah, those handful of M&M’s you stole off of Milton’s desk at work count.  So does that half can of coke you found in your back seat cupholder from last June.  So does the handful of french fries you stole from Paul while he was in the bathroom at MacDonald’s.

Every.

Single.

Calorie.

But counting calories is boring, right? And who has time to calculate all of that? Right?  Luckily, there’s this thing called the Internet – sign up for a calorie tracking site and start tracking!

Now, once you have a few days under your belt, take a look back and determine an average for what you’ve been eating and how many total calories you’ve been eating daily.

To lose a pound a week, knock 500 calories out of that diet per day.  If you want to lose half a pound a week, knock 250 calories out of your diet per day.

It might mean one less snack, ordering a smaller lunch, or cutting back on soda (liquid calories are BRUTAL). Note, if you track calories for a few days and you don’t lose weight, you’re probably underestimating or under reporting how you much food you eat.

Your body DOES obey the laws of thermodynamics (energy in, energy out), and your metabolism isn’t slow! You’re simply eating too much. I promise! Take 3 minutes to watch this if you’re convinced your metabolism doesn’t operate like normal:

A quick note: if you are used to eating 4,000 calories a day, switching to 2,000 per day will probably make you want to gnaw your arm off – instead, slowly decrease your calorie intake by a few hundred calories each week.

Think of your stomach like a muscle that needs to be trained – it needs to learn that it can function and operate on way less food than you’ve been giving it.

This is the most easy-to-understand method of weight loss – you still eat all of the same foods, you just have to adjust how much you are eating of those same foods.

Unfortunately, this method also produces the least optimal healthy results in my opinion and is the easiest to abandon (eating only HALF of something deliciously unhealthy is tougher than not eating it at all, in my opinion!) but it’s a great place for a newbie to start taking control of his/her eating.

Quality of Calories

Once you’ve learned how many calories you’re consuming, you might start to see a few pounds disappear, but it’s just a step in the right direction.  Hopefully this won’t come as a shock to you, but 2000 calories worth of gingerbread cookies doesn’t fuel your body the same way 2,000 calories of meat, vegetables, and fruit would.

Not all calories are created equal!

Your body digests certain types of nutrients differently, using them for all sorts of bodily functions: building muscle, transporting nutrients, fueling various organs or muscles, or storing energy as fat for later use.  Let’s take a look at how to compose a basic meal:

Protein: When you exercise, your muscles are broken down and then use protein to rebuild themselves stronger while recovering. Protein absolutely NEEDS to be a main component of every meal.  Aim for one gram per pound (two grams per KG) of lean body weight, or just do one gram per pound of body weight if you don’t want to do the math – with an upper limit of 200 grams.  Sources of protein include chicken, eggs, beef, pork, fish, nuts, legumes, quinoa, and most dairy products.

Carbohydrates: When you eat carbohydrates, they get converted to glucose (sugar) in your system, which is then used to provide energy for all sorts of body functions to take place.  Vegetables and/or fresh fruit are quality sources of carbohydrates, with grains being less so in my opinion…but we’ll get to more grains later. There are certainly bad carbohydrates (processed carbs, refined grains, and more), and those are the ones we want to avoid.  Unless you’re a marathon runner, you can function with WAY less carbs than you’re probably consuming now.

Fat:  Fat is easily the most misunderstood macro-nutrient in your diet; long story short: fat is absolutely critical to your body and should make up a BIG portion of your daily calories.  Things like avocados, almonds, olive oil, walnuts, and almond butter are great sources of healthy fat (polyunsaturatured and monounsaturated).  If you take this stance on saturated fat (personally, I do), then full fat milk, coconut milk, and fatty cuts of meat will provide you with sources of saturated fat.

The first thing I want to make sure you know is that the fat in your food is not what made you fat. It wasn’t until the past 40-50 years that poor fat was suddenly vilified (after a few scientific leaps of faith with no real evidence to back it up), which is why every “healthy” food these days is “low fat” or “fat free!”

Not surprisingly, our country is fatter and more unhealthy than ever, and yet people still avoid fat at all costs and consume more “healthy whole grains!” (ugh).

So what IS making us fat? Simple, refined, and/or processed carbohydrates! Rather than spend thirty minutes typing it out, I’d recommend instead that you spend three  minutes to watch this video to show WHY excessive carbohydrate consumption can make you fat:

So, if you’re looking to kick start your weight loss journey with healthy eating, start by swapping out processed refined carbohydrates for more natural foods.

Depending on your level of commitment and your ability to handle change, you might be better off making one small change every other week rather than a whole bunch of changes simultaneously.

The longevity diet
is simply eating what nature intended us to,
thus ensuring a healthier and longer life.

Animals in the wild, eating their natural diet, live an average of ten times the number of years it takes them to reach maturity (Chimpanzee’s reach maturity by the time they’re five, and live to about fifty years, for instance).

Meanwhile, most humans’ lifespan is barely five times the number of years it takes to reach maturity.

The Longevity Diet: How long should we be living?

Steve Charter, in Eat More Raw: A guide for health and sustainability, cites Dr Joel Wallach, who emphasises the scientifically accepted view that the genetic potential for longevity in humans suggests we should live to around 120 to 140 years old.

Dr Wallach lists a few more cases to further support this, including Russian Georgians who commonly live to 120 and the Armenians and Ebkanians, where living to 140 is not uncommon.

He cites one Armenian who, from his military records, is thought to have lived to 167 years old, and the Titicaca Indians of south-east Peru who lived to between 120-140 years old. There’s also the case of the Niger chief who died at 126 with all his teeth, and a Syrian in the Guinness Book of Records who fathered 9 children after 80 and went on to live to 133.

Put into context, the average age for Americans was 75.5 years old in 1994. For doctors it was 58. Dr Wallach suggest that these figures suggest that there is great value in treating yourself (through nutritional and lifestyle changes), rather than putting your health in the hands of doctors.

If you think about it logically, the reason there’s such a difference in our lifespan (compared to chimpanzees or those who manage to live to a ripe old age) is that we are not eating our natural diet.

In this article I’ll discuss some of the longest-living tribes and what the commonalities are in terms of their diet and lifestyle, what I term the longevity diet.

                The longevity diet: Diet of the longest-living cultures

John Robbins, in Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World’s Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples, describes the lifestyles and dietary patterns of the long-lived cultures of the Abkhasia of Southern Russia, the Vicalbamba Indians of the Ecuadorian Andes and the Hunza of North Pakistan.

He found that the percentage of calories they obtained daily was between 69-73% carbohydrates, 15-18% from fat and 10-13% from protein.

Overall daily calories ranged between 1,700 -1,800, while the Abkhasia ate 90% plant foods and the Vilcabamba and Hunza ate 99% plant foods.

All three ate low amounts of salt, zero sugar or processed food, and had no incidence of obesity and other common diseases.

He also discussed the Okinawa, who, though eating a more animal-based diet, had a similar lifestyle.

The longevity diet includes some common denominators. These are:

  • Diet including whole mostly vegan, organic food with minimal animal products and fat.
  • Vitamin D and exercise
  • Strong community values
  • Spirituality and a sense of purpose

 Naps and the Heart

Regular naps
have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Those who have a siesta at least three times a week
were shown in research to be
more than a third less likely to die of
cardiovascular disease.

A leading scientist from the extensive study,
Dimitrios Trichopoulos of the
Harvard School of Public Health in Boston said:

“Taking a nap could turn out to be an important weapon
in the fight against coronary mortality.”

The effect proved to be particularly strong for working men.
Those who regularly took a little time out from their working day
to have a short snooze had a sixty-four percent
lower risk of death
from heart disease.
However, even non-workers showed a benefit.
Those occasionally napping had
a twelve percent lower coronary mortality rate
and those who systematically napped
had a thirty-seven percent reduction in death
from cardiovascular events.

Naps and stress

We’ve all been there,
after a few late nights it can be difficult
to deal with the stresses
and strains of the working day.
Little problems suddenly seem insurmountable
and it’s not just our minds that struggle
when we’re sleep deprived,
our bodies suffer too.

Let’s look at that graphically.
People who took a nap,
were able to outperform those who didn’t.

When we’re under psychological pressure
the body releases chemicals designed to help us fight or flee.
When we’re tired even more of these stress hormones
flood through the body.
That was great when we were cavemen fighting sabre-toothed tigers,
but in the modern world when stress is sustained and psychological
the results are potentially deadly.
The hormones can ramp up blood pressure and blood sugar levels predisposing to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity.

The good news is that research shows that naps can mitigate
the effects of too little sleep,
decrease the release of these stress chemicals
and help protect our bodies from
the negative effects of stress.

We are all dancing away the time.

So if napping is so good,
why are many of us so embarrassed or ashamed of it?
I mean let’s face it, whether it’s called a siesta, an afternoon snooze
is ingrained into many cultures.
But in the US, the UK and many other western societies,
sleeping in the daytime can be seen as laziness,
a sign of getting old  or lacking drive.
With 650,000 Americans dying of heart disease every year,
maybe it’s time to change the way think
and the way we work.

How to have the perfect power nap

Keep it consistent.
Try to nap at the same time every day.
This helps your body adjust its normal circadian rhythms
and ensures you get maximum benefit.
make it a regular part of your daily routine.

Our DNA has a higher purpose.

Sleep or stimulants?
Do you slug back a strong cup of coffee
to beat that post-lunch slump?
If you do, you may not be taking the best approach.
A study compared the effectiveness of caffeine,
day time naps and getting more night-time sleep
as ways of overcoming the afternoon dip
and the nap won hands down.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to bin the Java.
Both napping aficionados and scientific researchers
at Loughborough University recommend
having a cup of coffee immediately before your nap.
When you wake twenty minutes later,
the caffeine will have kicked in
so that you get a double boost.

It’s all about the adenosine.
Adenosine is the chemical responsible for our feelings of tiredness,
it slows down nerve cell activity making us sluggish and slow.
Adenosine levels naturally decrease when we snooze
and caffeine blocks our body’s response to the chemical,
so together you have the ultimate power nap.
