It is not that we have a short time to live,
but that we waste most of it
a classic reading from Seneca’s
On the Shortness of Life

Lennox Johnson reading

On the Shortness of Life is an essay written by Seneca, a roman statesman and Stoic philosopher, to his father-in-law Paulinus. In this passage Seneca responds to the common complaint that life is too short. He argues that life is long if one manages their time well, and that most people waste the majority of their time on pointless pursuits.

On the Shortness of Life

The following reading is from chapters 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 11, 14, and 18 of Seneca’s On the Shortness of Life translated by John W. Basore.

The majority of mortals, Paulinus, complain bitterly of the spitefulness of Nature, because we are born for a brief span of life, because even this space that has been granted to us rushes by so speedily and so swiftly that all save a very few find life at an end just when they are getting ready to live.

It is not that we have a short space of time, but that we waste much of it. Life is long enough, and it has been given in sufficiently generous measure to allow the accomplishment of the very greatest things if the whole of it is well invested. But when it is squandered in luxury and carelessness, when it is devoted to no good end, forced at last by the ultimate necessity we perceive that it has passed away before we were aware that it was passing. So it isthe Life we receive is not short, but we make it so, nor do we have any lack of it, but are wasteful of it.

Just as great and princely wealth is scattered in a moment when it comes into the hands of a bad owner, while wealth however limited, if it is entrusted to a good guardian, increases by use, so our Life is amply long for him who orders it properly.

Not Copyrighted Backgrounds

Why do we complain of Nature? She has shown herself kindly; Life, if you know how to use it, is long. But one man is possessed by an avarice that is insatiable, another by a toilsome devotion to tasks that are useless; one man is besotted with wine, another is paralyzed by sloth; one man is exhausted by an ambition that always hangs upon the decision of others, another, driven on by the greed of the trader, is led over all lands and all seas by the hope of gain; some are tormented by a passion for war and are always either bent upon inflicting danger upon others or concerned about their own; some there are who are worn out by voluntary servitude in a thankless attendance upon the great; many are kept busy either in the pursuit of other men’s fortune or in complaining of their own; many, following no fixed aim, shifting and inconstant and dissatisfied, are plunged by their fickleness into plans that are ever new; some have no fixed principle by which to direct their course, but Fate takes them unawares while they loll and yawn – so surely does it happen that I cannot doubt the truth of that utterance which the greatest of poets delivered with all the seeming of an oracle:

“The part of Life we really Live is small.”
For all the rest of existence is not Life,
but merely Time
.

Acrylic Landscapes Art Painting by Rajeshwari

Though all the brilliant intellects of the ages were to concentrate upon this one theme, never could they adequately express their wonder at this dense darkness of the Human mind.
.
Men do not suffer anyone to seize their estates, and they rush to stones and arms if there is even the slightest dispute about the limit of their lands, yet they allow others to trespass upon their life – nay, they themselves even lead in those who will eventually possess it. No one is to be found who is willing to distribute his money, yet among how many does each one of us distribute his Life! In guarding their fortune men are often closefisted, yet, when it comes to the matter of wasting time, in the case of the one thing in which it is right to be miserly, they show themselves most prodigal.

And so I should like to lay hold upon someone from the company of older men and say: “I see that you have reached the farthest limit of human life, you are pressing hard upon your hundredth year, or are even beyond it; come now, recall your Life and make a reckoning. Consider how much of your time was taken up with a moneylender, how much with a patron, how much with a client, how much in wrangling with your wife, how much in punishing your slaves, how much in rushing about the city on social duties. Add the diseases which we have caused by our own acts, add, too, the time that has lain idle and unused; you will see that you have fewer years to your credit than you count. Look back in memory and consider when you ever had a fixed plan, how few days have passed as you had intended, when you were ever at your own disposal, when your face ever wore its natural expression, when your mind was ever unperturbed, what work you have achieved in so long a Life, how many have robbed you of Life when you were not aware of what you were losing, how much was taken up in useless sorrow, in foolish joy, in greedy desire, in the allurements of society, how little of yourself was left to you; you will perceive that you are dying before your season!”

What, then, is the reason of this? You Live as if you were destined to Live forever, no thought of your frailty ever enters your head, of how much time has already gone by you take no heed. You squander time as if you drew from a full and abundant supply, though all the while that day which you bestow on some person or thing is perhaps your last.

You have all the fears of mortals and all the desires of immortals.

You will hear many men saying: “After my fiftieth year I shall retire into leisure, my sixtieth year shall release me from public duties.” And what guarantee, Pray, have you that your Life will last longer? Who will suffer your course to be just as you plan it?
.
Are you not ashamed to reserve for yourself only the remnant of Life, and to set apart for Wisdom only that time which cannot be devoted to any business? How late it is to begin to Live just when we must cease to Live! What foolish forgetfulness of mortality to postpone wholesome plans to the fiftieth and sixtieth year, and to intend to begin life at a point to which few have attained!

lighthouse Lookout at night Royalty Free Footage - YouTube

It takes the whole of Life to learn how to Live, and – what will perhaps make you wonder more – it takes the whole of Life to learn how to die.

Many very great men, having laid aside all their encumbrances, having renounced riches, business, and pleasures, have made it their one aim up to the very end of life to know how to live; yet the greater number of them have departed from life confessing that they did not yet know – still less do those others know. Believe me, it takes a great man and one who has risen far above human weaknesses not to allow any of his time to be filched from him, and it follows that the Life of such a man is very long because he has devoted wholly to himself whatever time he has had. None of it lay neglected and idle; none of it was under the control of another, for, guarding it most grudgingly, he found nothing that was worthy to be taken in exchange for his time. And so that man had time enough, but those who have been robbed of much of their Life by the public, have necessarily had too little of it.
No Copyright, Copyright Free Videos, Motion Graphics, Movies ...And so there is no reason for you to think that any man has lived long because he has grey hairs or wrinkles; he has not lived long – he has existed long.

For what if you should think that that man had had a long voyage who had been caught by a fierce storm as soon as he left harbour, and, swept hither and thither by a succession of winds that raged from different quarters, had been driven in a circle around the same course? Not much voyaging did he have, but much tossing about.

I am often filled with wonder when I see some men demanding the time of others and those from whom they ask it most indulgent. Both of them fix their eyes on the object of the request for time, neither of them on the time itself; just as if what is asked were nothing, what is given, nothing.

Men trifle with the most precious thing in the world; but they are blind to it because it is an incorporeal thing, because it does not come beneath the sight of the eyes, and for this reason it is counted a very cheap thing – nay, of almost no value at all. Men set very great store by pensions and doles, and for these they hire out their labor or service or effort.

But no one sets a value on Time; all use it lavishly as if it cost nothing. But see how these same people clasp the knees of physicians if they fall ill and the danger of death draws nearer, see how ready they are, if threatened with capital punishment, to spend all their possessions in order to Live!

So great is the inconsistency of their feelings. But if each one could have the number of his future years set before him as is possible in the case of the years that have passed, how alarmed those would be who saw only a few remaining, how sparing of them would they be! And yet it is easy to dispense an amount that is assured, no matter how small it may be; but that must be guarded more carefully which will fail you know not when.
Motion backgrounds free, no copyright, animated backgroud, video loop ...Decrepit old men beg in their Prayers for the addition of a few more years; they pretend that they are younger than they are; they comfort themselves with a falsehood, and are as pleased to deceive themselves as if they deceived Fate at the same time. But when at last some infirmity has reminded them of their mortality, in what terror do they die, feeling that they are being dragged out of life, and not merely leaving it. They cry out that they have been fools, because they have not really lived, and that they will live henceforth in leisure if only they escape from this illness; then at last they reflect how uselessly they have striven for things which they did not enjoy, and how all their toil has gone for nothing. But for those whose life is passed remote from all business, why should it not be ample? None of it is assigned to another, none of it is scattered in this direction and that, none of it is committed to Fortune, none of it perishes from neglect, none is subtracted by wasteful giving, none of it is unused; the whole of it, so to speak, yields income. And so, however small the amount of it, it is abundantly sufficient, and therefore, whenever his last day shall come, the wise man will not hesitate to go to meet death with steady step.

Of all men they alone are at leisure who take time for Philosophy, they alone really Live; for they are not content to be good guardians of their own lifetime only. They annex every age to their own; all the years that have gone before them are an addition to their store. Unless we are most ungrateful, all those men, glorious fashioners of holy thoughts, were born for us; for us they have prepared a way of life.

By other men’s labors we are led to the sight of things most Beautiful that have been wrested from darkness and brought into Light; from no age are we shut out, we have access to all ages, and if it is our wish, by greatness of mind, to pass beyond the narrow limits of Human weakness, there is a great stretch of Time through which we may roam.
Background Image No Copyright - 1280x720 - Download HD Wallpaper ...We may argue with Socrates, we may doubt with Carneades, find peace with Epicurus, overcome Human nature with the Stoics, exceed it with the Cynics. The Life of the philosopher, therefore, has wide range, and he is not confined by the same bounds that shut others in. He alone is freed from the limitations of the Human race; all ages serve him as if a god.

Has some time passed by? This he embraces by recollection. Is time present? This he uses. Is it still to come? This he anticipates. He makes his Life long by combining all times into one.

And so, my dearest Paulinus, tear yourself away from the crowd, and, too much storm-tossed for the time you have lived, at length withdraw into a peaceful harbor. Think of how many waves you have encountered, how many storms, on the one hand, you have sustained in private life, how many, on the other, you have brought upon yourself in public life; long enough has your virtue been displayed in laborious and unceasing proofs – try how it will behave in leisure. The greater part of your life, certainly the better part of it, has been given to the state; take now some part of your time for yourself as well. And I do not summon you to slothful or idle inaction, or to drown all your native energy in slumbers and the pleasures that are dear to the crowd. That is not to rest; you will find far greater works than all those you have hitherto performed so energetically, to occupy you in the midst of your release and retirement.

Getting children to think is easy,
If you think about it.
But don’t think too much.

including moderation.”
– Benjamin Franklin
Inventor of many things, including
The United States of America

Moderation is the best advise
I have encountered.
The violation of this admonition
Is why a few of us
Are driving a Tesla.
This poor man,
Who changed the way the whole world lives,
Did not heed this gentle warning.

is a balance of a thousand insanities.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Nikola Tesla, according to Life Magazine’s
Special issue of September, 1997,
Is among the 100 most famous people
Of the last 1,000 years.
He did not become insane,
As we may be able to define it,
At the end of his life,
For he was like that his entire life.
The line between insanity and genius
Is thin
And often does not exist.

There is no great genius
without some touch of madness.

This assumption is reasonable within
The levels of intelligence he demonstrated.
Thinking far too much
Contributed to his lonely, withdrawn existence.
He died without ever getting married
Or having the joy of children

NIKOLA TESLA

NIKOLA TESLA

WE ARE OF SINGLE MIND

My friends,
The awareness of
Our ability, or disability,
As some may view it,
To think of one,
And ONLY one,
Thing at a time,
Can become a gift of Life.

But this phenomenon can become
A deadly exercise in poor judgement,
If you think you can text while driving.
Not fully knowing that the human brain
Simply switches rapidly back and forth
From one thought to another,
Has cost much needless suffering
And many lives.

illusion 1

You, and I, are capable of thinking
About only ONE thing at a time.
Research (read more) has proven this
Time after time.
Oh, there are exceptions,
Very few,
But these exceptions are not me,
And they are not you.

The myth of multitasking has never been stronger.
But researchers prove it is a myth
And they have the data to prove it.

As we discussed in my class in
Philosophy, The Art of Wondering,
Humans don’t do things simultaneously.
Instead, we switch our attention from task to task
Extremely fast,
Or, if you are like me,
A little slower.

illusion 2

And, if you are like me,
Drink another fruit smoothie
And think only about
Getting the very last drop.
Staring into the bottom of the cup
Is a deep enough thought,
When you stop thinking about it.
For those of you who referred to me
As an old smoothie,
You were about 40% right.
The rest is made up of water
Three brain cells
And one nerve ending.
I keep asking my students
Not to step on that.

“In order to act,
you must be somewhat insane.
A reasonably sensible man
is satisfied with thinking.”
– Georges Clemenceau

Optical illusions

According to Meyer, Evans and Rubinstein,
“Multitasking may seem efficient on the surface
But may actually take more time in the end
And involves more error.
Mental blocks created by shifting between tasks
Can cost as much as 40 percent of
Someone’s productive time.”
(This explains texting and auto accidents.)

“The brain is very good
at deluding itself.”

– neuroscientist Earl Miller

But there is unbelievable beauty
In our awareness
Of ourselves.

This inability (to multitask)
Like so very, very many things,
Should be recognized as a Gift,
A singular ability,
A Blessing,
If you think about it,
But not too much.
Remember, moderation in everything
Including moderation.

4

But what exactly does that mean?
What is a moderate, moderate.
I think we keep looking for that being
To elect to public office –
A moderate, moderate.
But since I do not know
What this is,
I do not know
Who this is
To vote for.

 We humans may eventually evolve
Into beings that can think
More than ONE thought
At a time,
Perhaps, even thinking about
EVERYTHING at once,
Much like the quantum computers
We are now creating.
(read more here to blow your mind out of calm waters)

Such a God like quality
May bring us
“Nearer My God to Thee”,
But so far,
Our single-mindedness has brought us
The internet,
Fruit smoothies (Thank you Lord!) and
The Atomic Bomb.

5

I Pray
That enabling even more capability,
Doesn’t also blow up
In our hands.

But my dear Friends,
Hidden very deep within the folds
Of our SINGULAR ability
To think one thought at a time,
Lies a secret to a happy life.
Knowing that you can think about
One, and only ONE thing
At a time
Is a truly precious insight.

It is your awareness
Of this
That is of value,
Not the knowing itself,
Not the thing you know you can
Or cannot do.

Hang in there.
I am swimming to
The shallow end of the pool,
Running out of air,
Breathing deep and
Taking in more water.
This is where more children my age go
To have fun.

6

Knowing that your mind can harbor
Only ONE thought at a time –
Being fully aware of this –
Can place you in control
Of the next moment,
The next hour,
In control of your life.

If in THIS moment
You are sad, regretful or depressed,
Quickly,
Do something else,
Something you may call distracting,
That you know would not be unpleasant, painful,
Something that would be, in fact, pleasurable,
Anything, including just jumping into the pool.
Hey, try it with all your clothes on –
Then you’ll have something to remember!
That will really take your mind off your miseries.
You will laugh so hard
You may not be able to get out of the pool
By yourself, without help.
So, pull the helper
Into the water with you!
That will make your day,
And his.

Life need NOT
Be uneventful.

7

I pushed my sweet LeVonna
Into a swimming pool fully clothed.
She never strolled by another pool
Standing close to me again.
It still makes my day
Just thinking about it.

Are you getting the picture yet?
Hey, (west Texan for, Hey)
You can be fully in control
Of this moment,
Of your mind,
Of your mood.

By the way,
Pushing her into the pool
Was the last moment
I felt any kind of control of her.
What boggles my mind is,
She then said “Yes”,
And were married shortly thereafter.
Crazy pays.

8

Try other distracting things:
To putting on a favorite movie,
To calling a good friend
(that’s what they are for, silly),
To taking a nice, warm (or ice cold) bath,
To opening a really good book,
To cuddling with the dog or cat,
To saying something funny,
Or preparing something great to eat
Or eating that great something,
Or shopping
(great therapy, just ask the Ladies)
Or best yet:
Totally immersing yourself in
Helping someone else in need.

You get the idea.

You are in charge, in control
In command of the very next moment,
The next hour
The rest of the beautiful day,
A beautiful Life.
You are so singular in your ability
To think,
That you have nothing more
To be responsible for
Than the next thought
About the next moment.

9

WE cannot think two thoughts
At the same moment,
(Thank you Lord),
So take control of the only thing
You need to control
Or can control.
And keep on controlling.

Remember,
You simply cannot worry
About tomorrow
While you are on a high speed roller coaster,
(Isn’t that right, Ian?)
In a hot air balloon,
Or full of hot air, like me,
Or right after
You were stung by a honey bee
(It happens when your trying to help them.
We house these beautiful creations
behind our house.)

10

Life, my friend,
Is a SERIES
Of small pleasures,
Distractions,
Moments
YOU make.

So stay in motion.

Make every “momentous” decision
One for Joy.
Don’t leave room in your mind,
Or your precious Heart,
For even one second of sadness.
God has empowered you
To think,
To do,
To act,
And to Love life.
He Loved you enough
To give you Life.
And He will Love you
Long after.

Yes,
God has empowered you
To Love your life,
To Love every person you meet,
To Love every turtle crossing the street
(they are now ALL endangered species),
Every cricket keeping you awake,
Every river you cross,
Every thought
That flows into the Eternal Sea.

11

Never stop acting,
Deciding, moving your mind
To do the things that
Bring joy into life.
It is
Your decision.
And it always has been,
And always will be.

Get out of your chair,
Kick open the front door,
And run –
Toward anything or anyone
That has ever made you happy,
That will bring you pure Joy
Again and again and again.

Life,
Is a SERIES
Of small pleasures.

12

My dear friends,
It is no longer necessary
For you to be unhappy,
To live without Joy
In your life.

Being aware
Of the Love of God
For you,
Of your awareness of life,
It’s limitations,
It’s opportunities
And your ability to
Command the next moment of
Your presence on this Beautiful Earth,
Can free your mind,
And your precious Heart,
From all fear,
Despair, boredom
And hopelessness.

Take time
To contemplate
The rare beauty of your existence,
Of this awesome moment,
That is the true Treasure
Of your brief time.

Capture the next moment in time
Take command of what you do,
And then, share your story.
So many others need help along the way.

13

My Precious Friend,
You are Morning,
Before Tomorrow comes the night,
And Blessed are the moments
In which you take the time
To sing your song,
To Blossom in God’s Spring,
To bring warmth to Hearts in need,
And feel the Sacred Rain,
That ever so gently falls
In tears,
From all the Joy
You bring.

May the Joy of our Lord
Always abide
In your
Very Precious Heart.

They are the deadliest,
because they spread so much disease.
Mosquitoes are responsible
For the deaths of many hundreds of thousands
Of people every year.
Estimates are difficult to come by.

Maintaining a pesticide free environment
Pays huge dividends.
Not only for the safety of our precious children,
But for so many of God’s other
Stunningly beautiful Creations.
And since Humans are
The number two killer on the planet,
I recommend
Hate Free Environments.
Now there’s an idea
Worth thinking about.
But we haven’t thought about that much,
Have we?

ROSIE

My precious Rosie shared countless small moments of pure joy with me for 18 years and one month. She still resides deeply embedded in my heart. Life, is a SERIES Of small pleasures. And I cannot count the number she gave to me. Sometimes, the greatest Gifts are very small indeed. God Blesses us in ways we are not always fully aware of.

Is It Just for the Moment We Live? / Fighting Diabetes

bleeding-hearts

Let your Heart lead the way and you’ll find Love, any day.

While attending Hardin-Simmons University,
A beautiful place of Hope, of Love, of Salvation,
I met a young lady.
She was deeply contemplative,
Very philosophical about Life,
And at such a tender age.
She gave a brief presentation,
In a public address class,
About all encompassing
Questions of Life.

The questions evolved into
A beautiful song,
Which she sang:
What’s It All About, Alfie?”

Here we find a rare display of color.

“In such times, the only true protest is beauty.” – Lucia Perry

 I felt deep inside myself
That she would find answers,
Looking with such longing
Into the eyes of her audience,
Searching the hearts of everyone Listening.

At the end
She was in tears,
And so were we.

I could see that she was
Serious,
Pleading for help,
As do we all,
For a reason for this Life,
A reason to go on.

As the lilting, beautiful song (edited) goes:

dove

I know there’s something much more.

“Is it just for the moment we live?
What’s it all about
When you sort it out,
Alfie?
Are we meant to take
More than we give?

Or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind,
Then I guess it’s wise to be cruel.

And if life belongs only to the strong,
What will you lend on an old Golden Rule?
As sure as I believe there’s a Heaven above,
I know there’s something much more,
Something even non-believers can believe in.

I believe in love,
Alfie,
Without true love
We just exist.

Until you find the love you’ve missed,
You’re nothing,
Alfie.

When you walk
Let your Heart lead the way,
And you’ll find Love
Any day,
Alfie.”

     What’s It All About?

The prison doors of our reluctance,
Our hesitation
To ask someone,
Anyone,
For help, for guidance,
For Love,
Can become locked.

Is it just for the moment we live?

I often wondered,
But now have no doubt,
That the young Lady,
Whose life became
Such a beautiful song,
Found an answer.
For she found her voice.

Her precious Life
For a few moments,
Perhaps a lifetime,
Became a beautiful song.
She let her Heart
Lead the way,
And so can you
Find Love
Any day.

The stories of our lives need to be told. These tales, after our lives are over, may be all that is left of life. They may become our life, in the hearts and minds of those we leave behind. And a beautiful story will tell of a beautiful life. Please take the time to share your stories. They will be appreciated. They will be needed. They will be you.

Rosie Junior a few days after enrolling.

Rosie Junior first fell in Love with his Tiger.

Allow me to share
another one with you.

This story is not really about dogs. Oh, there are cherished canine friends in this one. But, it is really a story about Love, a Love so vibrant, so real, that it brings tears to my eyes even to this day. And I feel that I must share it with you. Not for what it says, but for what it made me feel. For Love is not a story about Life. It is Life. Or it is nothing at all.

He gave his typically warm greeting to him every day.

He gave a typically warm greeting to him every day.

Love is not in the details. For Life, if it is fully lived, is a vibrant and beautiful Love story, written for you, with your permission, by the very Hand of God.

So very many Blessings have come my way, that I cannot adequately begin to express my gratitude. But allow me to try.

One thing always leads to another. And the Love I felt in my heart, when I was in the third grade, for a stunningly gorgeous Collie dog that wandered onto the school playground, has led to so very many Blessings. This Love, I believe, was an expression of the Love of God for a lonely little boy in need of Love. Allow me to explain.

In a few months the Tiger was a bit overwhelmed.

In a few months the Tiger was a bit overwhelmed.

At this time in my life, my Mother and I lived in a small, two story Apartment, just across the street from the Fire Department (thank God) and the County Courthouse. I remember being told later, that the rent was one dollar per day. We lived on the second floor, facing all the action of the Fire trucks. I privately felt happy about our location, because everyone in this small complex smoked constantly.

R. J. cannot write back but the look says it all. Is this the look of Love or hunger?

R. J. cannot write back but the look says it all. Is this the look of Love or hunger?

The one room we lived in was about twelve feet by ten. There was one single bed for both of us and, believe it or not, we shared a bathroom with the man next door.

We also shared a giant white refrigerator, at first a real ICE box, with everyone on the second floor. Everyone! One pay telephone was available on the first floor – 5 cents per call.

Lets bounce this idea off of you

Let me bounce this idea off of you.

I remember, as a child, observing that the men living there, and there were nothing but other older, single, lonely men, would remove their cigarets just long enough to drink more beer. And in between these rhythms, they would utter a few syllables, usually in greeting, agreeing, disagreeing or departing. And they always had a big warm smile.

These were remarkable men. There was absolutely nothing they would not do for me or my Mother or for each other. My first lessons in compassion came from these hard working, lonely guys who drank alcohol in excess to alleviate the misery of a meager existence.

Our annual Chess tournament is underway.

I remember listening on the radio to many exciting adventures about Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. And since this medium engaged the fertile soil of imagination, I was truly entertained. No, we did not yet own a television. I do not know where we would have put it. My Mother warmed up food on a small, single hot plate, since there was not even room for a stove. But we had room for a small radio and a small cage for my wonderful friend, a parakeet named Pee Wee.

I also had one, and only one, toy – a plastic train made of small cubes with little animals inside. I keep it in my office to show our students what little it takes to be truly happy. And was I happy? Oh my God! These were the best days of my life. I was so joyful that I cannot remember ever having a sad moment. I felt like I was in Heaven on earth. And, I was.

Did Dr. A really buy a Flag larger than the school?

Did Dr. A really buy a Flag larger than the school?

My young life taught me many important lessons. And one of them was this: what you do not have is far more important than what you do have. And the Blessings in life do not come from things – not from any thing. Things can come to possess you. Blessings do come from the hugs and laughter and warm smiles and precious time spent sharing and caring. I found out that Heaven is within you, and can from time to time, fit neatly within the space between you and someone you love.

I remember visiting a man named Joe each day. I would go to his corner room and always find the door open. Inside was a man who had little to share, but he always gave me an Almond Joy bar and a very warm greeting. I cannot purchase one of these today because I would start to cry. You see, it does not take much to convey your love to someone else. And those precious moments of sharing and caring stay with you forever. Love never dies.

Well, back to my story. I spotted a really beautiful Collie dog on the playground at school. It had no collar, so I supplied one made of twine. And yep! I took her home.

Kylee jumped head over heals at Flight Deck.

Kylee jumped head over heals with joy at Flight Deck.

She was larger than I was. But she quickly became the Love of my life. And you can just imagine the expression on the face of my Mother. There was, of course, no place to put her. So I solved that problem. I tied her to a telephone pole just outside of our room so I could keep an eye on her. Ever few minutes I would run downstairs to love on her and give her snacks. She was full of Almond Joys. I think Joe thought that I ate all of those.

Three days later a smartly dressed cowboy showed up to claim his prize cow dog. He had been looking for him since he disappeared. After he explained his ownership and his need and love for my new friend, my Mother, pictured through my tears, gave him back to this man. But in parting, he said something profound. He pointed to me and softly told my Mother, “The boy needs a dog. And a yard to keep it in”.

Fun and games!

        Fun and games!

I remember moving shortly after that, to a real house I have treasured in my memory. In the yard my Mother kept twenty three Geese (they were the greatest watch dogs ever. Trust me, when someone arrived you knew about it during the process of losing some of your hearing! And no one opened the gate or they would have died from Goose bite. No one. Even the postman made an appointment.)

Alden is on an island of cubes.

Alden had fun squared. Or, was it cubed?

It was in this house that we got our very first television set – a black and white Curtis Mathis. And we received ONE channel (9) from Abilene. And was I happy? Well, just ask Superman or the Lone Ranger. I never missed a show. Today I can get hundreds of channels and I am no longer happy. Most of my time is spent selecting something to watch or watch again for the thirty third time. What you do not have is truly more important than what you do have. The Buddhists (and Alex) were right – Less is More.

My friends, if your child needs to change a behavior, or two, please do not force feed some dangerous chemical substance you know nothing about, like good old carcinogenic Ritalin, down his throat. There is no real need for harsh discipline either. You do not need to raise your voice and get angry. Then you will need pills for high blood pressure, depression, constipation, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseam.

Diana

Diana enjoyed a break.

Just smile! Relax. And hand him a puppy. And then leave. Quietly leave and keep your dignity intact. You will leave a legacy of a tail wagging and Love everlasting.

No. You will not really need to say a thing. The puppy will speak volumes for you and convey a depth of warmth and compassion that you could never say. The new puppy will direct your child’s emotions like a maestro conducting an orchestra, only better. And all of the songs will be Love songs.

Yes. To a child the word Love begins with the letter P and ends with its tail wagging. So fess up, stop fussing and enjoy the laughter, the endless play and the joyful barking.

The end of my story about the beautiful Collie dog was, actually, the beginning of one of the greatest chapters in my life. Giving up my new found friend resulted in finding a new home, with a large yard, and being given a truly great Love of my life – a new puppy I named Ginger.

Sia was on top of the world.

Sia was on top of the world.

I was told that she was a Chinese Terrier, but I could never find any record that such a breed existed.

My Mother never really spanked me that much. But, I was a little (maybe a BIG) rascal and deserved far, far more than I got. But all that suddenly changed one day.

I built a Tree House, with the help of my friends, in the back yard. It was a platform with steps (boards) hammered into the trunk. Well, one day I deserved a spanking. And, you guessed it, I scampered up the tree and into the tree house. My Mother could not get to me! At last I found the secret to avoiding justice. And as I stared down from on high, I discovered that “Judge” Mom had alternative methods to deal with an unruly boy.

She looked down on the ground and spotted my dog, Ginger, picked her up and spanked her. And my heart was broken. I remember actually feeling each stroke. Now, don’t get me wrong, my Mother spanked Ginger lightly and only a couple of swats. And then she said, “If you cannot be man enough to take your spanking, I will spank your dog.”

A good time was had by all.

A good time was had by all.

Oh my God! This could not be. My poor little dog, Ginger, having to take my punishment. What a horrible miscarriage of justice. Where was the Supreme Court when you needed them?

So guess what I did? Such injustice simply could not prevail, so I trained Ginger to get into a bucket, tied to a rope, and stay in the bucket while I hauled her up into the tree house to be with me. Ginger was very smart and in many ways, smarter than me (although she did get a spanking).

During training, I gently set her in the bucket and then scampered up the tree and pulled her up. Well, guess what happened? I needed another predictable spanking! But I was prepared. Justice denied was justice delayed.

I well remember the screen door slamming behind me as my Mother raced to catch me. God only knows what horrible deed was done. But I do remember deserving a good spanking. After all, I was American, spoiled and an only child (what a combination!).

And the race was on. . . . .

Up the tree I scampered. And when I had ascended to the height of my ego and my imagination, I called down below . . . . “Ginger!  Ginger!  Get in the bucket! Get in the bucket!” And she did.

Angry Al is introduced by Gavin and Wyatt's dad, Nick.

Angry Al is introduced by Gavin and Wyatt’s dad, Nick. (We enrolled him in anger management class)

At the very moment she obeyed, the screen door slammed behind my Mother as she approached me with menacing eyes and a determined look. And that is when a miracle happened. Yes, such moments as this made me believe in God. My Mother witnessed my little dog, Ginger, being hoisted up to the tree house, where I posed with pride and glee. Ginger actually stayed in the basket until I pulled her all the way up and then she flew into my arms. I was overjoyed. I felt better than the boys who escaped from Alcatraz.

I peered down over the side of my tree house, to enjoy the full effect of my victory on the face of the Angel of Injustice. And what I saw stunned and astonished me. My Mother was laughing so hard that she fell on the ground. I think she laughed for several minutes. Later, she would exclaim, I was now too old to spank and she could never catch me anyway.

We embraced when I came down and she apologized for spanking

Jack said he fell in love with two hot chicks. And here they are!

Jack said he fell in love with two hot chicks. And here they are!

Ginger. And I vowed, a west Texas vow, never to misbehave again.

And Ginger, she became a Folk Hero. Not only for this act, but my Mother came to love her as no other. You see, when a large (I mean, really BIG) rattle snake cornered my Mother, by surprise, in the Kitchen after it snuck in when the door was propped open, it was little Ginger that placed herself between the snake and Mom and me. Ginger barked and growled and kept her little body between the snake and us, as it kept recoiling and striking but missing my little dog. Believe it or not, my Mother swept the snake out the door with a broom. Ah, these west Texas women! You never want to get them really mad!

Yes, Ginger became a life saving heroine and was literally worshiped by both of us. She ate with us, slept on the bed with us, traveled everywhere with us and loved us until the day she disappeared. As I recall, it was the day Richard Nixon was given the oath of office as President (perhaps an omen). And I looked for my Rosie, non-stop, for three full days.

We had moved to Abilene so that I could attend Hardin-Simmons University (my Mother was an H.S.U. graduate). So the territory was unfamiliar to Ginger or me. I feel like she went “mooching” because almost every neighbor we had in our previous neighborhood fed her. She made the rounds every morning. The whole neighborhood loved Ginger. Our love expressed itself, after so many years, in the shape of a very large, rotund, small dog. Sometimes, Love reveals itself that way.

Love can also be found in a bucket on its way to Heaven above, surrounded by uncontrollable laughter, tears of joy, treasured memories and a Mother’s great sense of humor and deep and abiding love.

You know, we never had much. And I could not have asked for more.

“While the word is yet unspoken,
you are master of it;
when once it is spoken
it is master of you.”

Vaccine Debate Misses Target

vaccine

My friends, the debate over vaccines has totally missed the target. Yes, we need to (virtually) all be vaccinated. And yes, deaths and horrible disabilities have resulted from being vaccinated. But let’s take a close look at EXACTLY what our targets should be.

One thing you can do is space vaccines out to prevent problems. Many physicians recommend spacing ALL vaccinations (for individual diseases) out at least two months apart to give our very fragile and very biological organs and the neurological systems time to absorb the impact of these chemicals.

Multi-dose formulations are highly suspect in damaging our delicate neurological systems / brain. Rather than getting in a convenience mode (you know, the good Doctor want to spend less time and just get it over), take the time to research this important topic and then take the time necessary to reduce the very real and serious risk to your child’s health, happiness and future. Space vaccines out.

Please take a look at The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert W. Sears prior to giving big round of vaccinations to your child.

Dr. Sears never says that vaccinations are dangerous. He is cautious about the effects of giving small children aggressive dosages of medicine. He recommends spacing out the vaccinations instead of giving them all at once. If your Doctor seems unwilling to do so, find another physician!

The most contentious ingredient in vaccinations is aluminum. The FDA requires the aluminum content of IV feeding solutions be limited to 25 micrograms per liter. That is a small amount. Especially when you consider that the HIB vaccine alone has 225 micrograms of aluminum. Further FDA studies show that a 22-pound baby can safely handle 50 micrograms if they have healthy kidneys.

The typical baby would not be getting 25 or even 225 micrograms of aluminum per day but if he got the full cocktail of vaccines today, he would have received approximately 1,225 micrograms of aluminum. That is a lot for a baby or you! By the way, these vaccines also contain trace amounts of mercury, formaldehyde, and MSG.

There is a book about it called “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children’s Vaccinations”, by Stephanie Cave, M.D., F.A.A.F.P and Deborah Mitchell.

Please recognize that you and I are alive today because of the miraculous discovery that we can be vaccinated against horrible diseases. Numerous plagues and other scourges have ravaged mankind for thousands of years. All of you know individuals who have died or suffered from such diseases as Polio, Small Pox and many others.

The debate that rages should not place one extreme point of view against the other. Both are actually correct to a degree. Now, let’s look at what we should be focused upon.

Some vaccine manufacturers are producing 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines and others in single-dose units, which do not require the use of thimerosal as a preservative. In addition, the live-attenuated version of the vaccine, which is administered intranasally (through the nose), is produced in single-units and does not contain thimerosal.

People have a right to expect the vaccines they receive are safe and effective. CDC and FDA also hold vaccines to the highest standards of safety. That is why they continually evaluate new scientific information about the safety of vaccines. Since 2001, no new vaccine licensed by FDA for use in children has contained thimerosal as a preservative (Why?), and all vaccines routinely recommended by CDC for children under six years of age have been thimerosal-free, or contain only trace amounts, except for multi-dose formulations of influenza vaccine.

Since seasonal influenza vaccine is produced in large quantities for annual immunization campaigns, some of the vaccine is produced in multi-dose vials, and contains thimerosal.

Many families have alleged that vaccines have caused their children to become autistic. I personally know of one (the son of my wonderful cousin, Jim). Since 1999, almost 5000 families have filed claims with the government alleging their children developed autism as a result of routine vaccinations.

The most popular theory is that this preservative called thimerosal is to blame. Several scientific studies have found no association between autism and vaccines containing thimerosal. But parents respond that their children’s symptoms did not show up until after the vaccinations required by many schools. If these families win, the families will be entitled to compensation from a multi billion-dollar trust fund. read more here

I think something is wrong in giving these vaccinations all at once. What brilliant scientist decided to employ a toxic substance such as mercury to use in millions of doses of  required vaccines for our fragile children.

Thimerosal was taken out of childhood vaccines in 2001. Why?

More than 500,000 children suffer from autism, and pediatricians diagnose more than 40,000 new cases every year. The disease was unknown until 1943, when autism was identified and diagnosed among 11 children born in the months after thimerosal was first added to baby vaccines in 1931.

Do all flu vaccines contain thimerosal?

Influenza (flu) vaccines are currently available in both thimerosal-containing and thimerosal-free versions. The total amount of flu vaccine without thimerosal as a preservative at times has been limited, but availability will increase as vaccine manufacturing capabilities are expanded. Take the time to locate thimerosal-free vaccine.

By the way, a clinical trial led by Mitsuyoshi Urashima and conducted by the Division of Molecular Epidemiology in the the Department of Pediatrics at the Jikei University School of Medicine Minato-ku in Tokyo found that vitamin D was extremely effective at halting influenza infections in children. The trial appears in the March, 2010 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Am J Clin Nutr (March 10, 2010). Learn more

Vitamin D could save billions of dollars in reduced health care costs. But no one can patent vitamin D, so it’s not being aggressively promoted. It is readily available to everyone for mere pennies a day. It is also FREE. Sunshine will synthesis vitamin D, so go for a walk! Your body is designed to get the vitamin D it needs by producing it when your bare skin is exposed to sunlight. The part of the sun’s rays that is important is ultraviolet B (UVB).

Vitamin D also significantly reduced asthma in children.

Another fascinating result from the trial is that if you remove those children from the study who were already being given vitamin D by their parents, so that you are only looking at children who started out with no vitamin D supplementation before the trial began, the results look even better as vitamin D reduced relative infection risk by nearly two-thirds.

How can I find out if thimerosal is in a vaccine?

For a complete list of vaccines and their thimerosal content level, you may visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Additionally, you may ask your health care provider or pharmacist for a copy of the vaccine package insert. It lists ingredients in the vaccine and discusses any known adverse reactions.

In 2013, Adams launched the Natural News Forensic Food Lab, where he conducts atomic spectroscopy research into food contaminants using high-end ICP-MS instrumentation. With this research, Adams has made numerous food safety breakthroughs such as revealing rice protein products imported from Asia to be contaminated with toxic heavy metals like lead, cadmium and tungsten. Adams was the first food science researcher to document high levels of tungsten in superfoods. He also discovered over 11 ppm lead in imported mangosteen powder, and led an industry-wide voluntary agreement to limit heavy metals in rice protein products to low levels by July 1, 2015.

In addition to his lab work, Adams is also the executive director of the non-profit Consumer Wellness Center, an organization that redirects 100% of its donations receipts to grant programs that teach children and women how to grow their own food or vastly improve their nutrition.
