Actor Paul Newman applied his greatest commitment and derived his deepest satisfaction from his quiet work in philanthropy. He used his influence, gave of his financial resources, and personally volunteered to advance humanitarian and social causes around the world.

In 1982, he founded Newman’s Own, Inc., which was one of the first food companies to use all natural products. Today, Newman’s Own is successful, and all after-tax profits and royalties are donated to thousands of charities worldwide through Newman’s Own Foundation. Thus far, over $400 million has been awarded to grantee recipients in all 50 states and in 31 countries around the world.

Newman’s Own Foundation is an independent, private foundation formed in 2005 by Paul Newman to sustain the legacy of his philanthropic work.

The Foundation believes that each of us has the potential to make a difference. Since 1982, when Paul Newman first declared, “Let’s give it all away,” many millions have been donated to thousands of nonprofit organizations helping people in need around the world.

Paul Newman’s private company makes a line of foods including lemonade, popcorn, salad dressings and spaghetti sauce, coffee (my favorite) and, as the labels say, all profits go to charity.

has been in forging a new kind of conscientious consumerism over the past decade. In that time, buyers have demonstrated a fierce brand loyalty. And I am proud to say, I am one of them.

Ms. Nell Newman, the third of Mr. Newman’s five daughters said her father’s philanthropy is just as he tells it. ”He thought the world had treated him incredibly well,”

His company co-sponsored the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award, which was presented annually to a United States resident who had fought courageously, despite adversity, to safeguard the First Amendment right to freedom of expression as it applied to the written word.

A sampling of grantees is available at the Newman’s Own Foundation website along with a description of funding areas. One beneficiary of this charity is the SeriousFun Children’s Network, residential summer camps for seriously ill children. Today, there are camps, programs, and initiatives operating in 50 countries across 5 continents. Over 384,700 children have attended a SeriousFun program free of charge.

Additionally, the Neman’s Own Foundation also provided a grant to The MINDS Foundation to fund US operations of the non-profit that works in rural India. Other beneficiaries, among many, have included The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund (from 1983 onwards), Shining Hope for Communities, Safe Water Network, Edible Schoolyard NYC, Fisher House Foundation, the WILD Young Women Programme (New Zealand), and Pilgrims Hospices (UK).

There are six camps Paul Newman founded for children who have life-threatening diseases. The charity was spurred by letters from seriously ill children who wanted to visit places like Disneyland.

Paul Newman lived his life, and dedicated the earnings from his hard work, to help those in need. He, and his family, are to be truly admired. Mr. Newman ranks among those we can call true American Patriots. Perhaps we can live our lives in a similar manner. At the very least, we can purchase Newman’s Own brand products. Please join me. There are many on their knees in need. And we can help.

Just think what this world would be like if millions of us would follow his example. Think of where the self-serving corporations would be. You know, the companies who seemingly care less and less, as time goes by, about what is in the food or drinks we continue, with ignorance, to consume.

These corporations have so polluted our food chain with items purposefully engineered to be addictive, that now for first time ever, and UNBELIEVABLY, the next generation (your children) can expect not to live as long as the previous generation. How awful can it get? Yes, that BAD.

PALACE OF WAX & RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT

We are planning activities for FRIDAY, October 31, 2014. Our destination is: The PALACE OF WAX & RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT, 601 East Safari Parkway, Grand Prairie (I-30 & Belt Line Road- 7 minutes East of Six Flags, (972-263-2391)

We will depart at 9:00 a.m. to arrive at 10:00 a.m. We will first enjoy a brief visit to the video arcade, gift shop, fantastic photos, and wax hands (ask for the special price for our group), then have an early lunch at 11:00 a.m. to avoid other large groups. Following lunch we will enjoy self-guided tours of the Palace of Wax & Ripley’s Believe It or Not, which should last approximately two hours.

This is a history, science, literature and art museum where learning becomes a unique experience. The fear section can be avoided by the young, faint of heart or just plain scared (like Dr. Anderson–who has been known to scream and cry and embarrass us). The not-so-brave may exit to the gift shop (now that’s a really scary place) and show the crybaby Dr. A how to escape a frightful future and avoid touring the rest of the exhibit.

Revealing the love hidden deep within the heart
can become seemingly impossible. But it is not.

I have helped small birds back into their nests. Later, as I heard  their joyful sounds, I realized such brief, precious moments can reveal the love of life deeply held in such tiny and trembling hearts. These hearts are weighed down, not so much by misfortune or circumstance, but by apathy, by noticing nothing but the self, by constantly looking ahead and not seeing into this moment, by losing control of consciousness and neglecting the precious life that is all around, by living only inside of your own body and mind and not in the lives of those all around you.

Our trip on Friday was to the Modern Art Museum.

In just one moment, you can suddenly realize that your happiness and your joy truly reside only in the hearts of others. The most miserable people on earth have only ever met themselves. They have only met their own personal desires and needs.

These truly sad people never realized that the physical and spiritual nature of our own reality tells us that we are one. We are woven from Fabric that is not just the same, but made by the same Maker in the same Pattern. They never noticed that when we breathe in, the plants breathe out, that when we smile, someone smiles back, that when we give to someone on their knees in need, our deepest inner needs are met. They never knew that when we extend our love to others, we are truly loved. They never discovered the simplistic and vital truth that we are truly one, just one, and only one.

The Modern was filled with amazingly beautiful creatures.

My friends, there are nests everywhere. The fallen are at your feet. Their cries for help may never be heard, but they are there. These people, and all of God’s beautiful creations in need, may not be seen. But if you search for them, they will reveal themselves. SEEK and you will FIND (Matthew 7:7). Knock, and the door of opportunity to help so many others, will be opened to you.

And as you open this door, you will discover that your inner joy, the peace

that your heart so fervently desires, the reason for your being, resides on the other side of you. It lives in the song of a bird, in the laughter of someone else, in the lives of so many in need.

It will live on long past your time on earth. You can become philosophical and peel the image of yourself off the mirror of life, and then give it to others. The world around you is a mirror. Look into it. Find yourself. And envision just how beautiful you are, as you more clearly see through the loving and grateful eyes of others.

God made you in His Image. You are the reflection of His deep and abiding Love. And you are so beautiful.

T.A.G.T. 2014 will join together nearly 2,000 educators and parents who share a passion for gifted education! The annual conference will be taken to new heights December 3-5 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

This unique experience features over 150 training sessions in 15 strands of designated subjects. T.A.G.T. is an approved provider of C.E. credit for educators, counselors, psychologists and school board members.

A new study – the biggest of its kind – is warning
that our love affair with sugary food and drink
is doubling our risk of heart related premature death.

I was proud of Gavin today. When informed of the risks, he changed his order from a sugary drink to sugar-free ice tea (an excellent source for antioxidant nutrition). Gavin increased his chances of not dying from heart disease by over 100%.

Parents, please give your child the information needed to avoid unbelievable suffering (sugar feeds cancer and causes numerous other serious health problems, like diabetes) and a premature death. Armed with knowledge, they will choose wisely.

Ignorance is a truly deadly commodity.

We have had a wonderful first week of school. Our trip to Main Event provided fun for everyone and a great end to the week. Students are now planning other adventures and helping to decided where we will go this coming semester.

Why America’s Education System Is Obsolete

You cannot have more fun than making noises into a fan!

Our competitive advantage of innovation is at risk because of America’s poor system of schooling, according to research by Harvard professor Tony Wagner.

Our schools teach to fill children with knowledge instead of focusing on developing innovation skills, learning to love one another and instilling the motivation to succeed.

To quote Wagner: “Today knowledge is constantly changing, growing exponentially… Today knowledge is free. It’s like air, it’s like water. It’s become a commodity… There’s no competitive advantage today in knowing more than the person next to you. The world doesn’t care what you know. What the world cares about is what you can do with what you know.”

Avoiding risk is normal but: “We penalize mistakes,” says Wagner. “The whole challenge in schooling is to figure out what the teacher wants. It’s a compliance-driven, risk-averse culture.” Innovation, on the other hand, is grounded in taking risks and learning via trial and error.

Educators should take a note from design firm IDEO with its mantra of “Fail early, fail often,” says Wagner. At Stanford’s Institute of Design, he says they put forth ideas like, “We’re thinking F is the new A.” Without failure, there is no success.

Young innovators are intrinsically motivated, he says. They aren’t interested in grades and petty reward systems. Parents and teachers can encourage innovative thinking by nurturing the curiosity and inquisitiveness of young people, Wagner says.

And this leads me to ask, “Why is suicide the second leading cause of death for college age students?” Why is failure, which can lead to such a tragic consequence, even noted or recorded? Why do we allow schools to punish scholars with failure and then compound the loss of self-esteem and lower achievement recognition by mathematically averaging success with failing grades?

There are specific causes for children, of all ages, becoming self-destructive. And one major cause is our inability to recognize the very dangerous commodity that failure can become when placed in the wrong or inexperienced hands. The power to succeed belongs in the hands of those whose future depends upon it. And it is an immense power.

There is tremendous value in failure, if it is placed it in a proper and positive perspective. Some great inventors and innovators survived antiquated, heartless and mindless institutional attempts at harassing and frequently annihilating anyone shy of perfection. But others, by the millions, have not survived. And the loss of such potential cannot even be estimated.

If we were to eliminate just one dozen of our most successful inventors, our societies would be set back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Yes, you would be in the dark, with none of the electronic devices to help you stay informed and pass the time. And you probably would not even exist.

Punitive and degrading assessment policies that penalize children so harshly, effectively crippling them, in my not-so-humble opinion, constitutes the equivalent of what can be equated to mass murder. These institutions of learning lack the wisdom and compassion and understanding to be permitted direct contact with our fragile and deeply loved children, our future innovators and leaders.

At our school, we have eliminated the antiquated nonsense of subjective grades and reports cards (along with dreaded homework, which according to research, is the number one cause of failure in secondary grades). With a required mastery level of 90%, no one receives a grade below an A. Students simply work on an instructional objective until this level is achieved and without time constraints.

As a result, failure is placed into a more positive perspective. It is actually valued. And, in fact, can be viewed philosophically, as the finest teacher available. Especially if it is seen within the context of the results of experimentation or research or exploratory activity.

Failure should not be wielded like a weapon to extrinsically motivate children to be successful. Accomplishment, in and of itself, is highly motivating. And, importantly, it is positive re-enforcement. Negatives are simply not needed – and they can become highly destructive.

Where would we be if Thomas Edison did not value the failure he encountered and knew was so essential for success? Edison held a world record of 1093 patents for inventions such as the phonograph, motion picture camera and last, but not least, the light bulb and laid the foundation for the modern electric age.

As an inventor, Edison made over 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

Professor Tony Wagner says that parents of innovators encourage their children to play in more exploratory ways with “Fewer toys, more toys without batteries, more unstructured time in their day”.

Wagner concludes, “The culture of schooling, as we all know it, is radically at odds with the culture of learning that produces innovators.”

Wagner is not suggesting we change a few processes and update a few manuals. He says, “The system has become obsolete. It needs reinventing, not reforming.”

I agree. Our children carry with them, in their pocket, something that connects them to the world wide web. They do not need to know everything. The can easily access information before you even get the opportunity to finish asking the question.

We need to instill a true passion for living and for learning. Let us begin by learning and teaching our children to love one another and, in the process, rediscover the joy we misplaced but existed since birth.

LUNCH: Please bring funds for lunch. Dr. A may require C.P.R. following ingestion of a fat, I mean hot dog. GIFT SHOP Yes! Please do not purchase anything to scare the cowardly Dr. A! He is already afraid of all children, a few parents (you scary ones know who you are!), his wife, his dog Rosie, and one particular chicken in the petting zoo.

Uniform pants with a belt (required to participate) & red monogrammed and tucked in school shirt are required. Jackets should be NAVY blue.
• Family, neighbors and friends are always invited to enjoy Friday with us.
• Students MAY WEAR COSTUMES on Friday

Drop-off will be at the School at 8:30 a.m. Pick-up will be at the Anderson School at 3:15 p.m. Please be patient – traffic conditions, goofing off or a reluctance to ask for directions (a male thing) may delay us. Dr. Anderson may be reached on his cell telephone – EMERGENCY. If he does not answer, keep calling! He’s old, retired (twice) & busy or pretending to be busy.

We don’t explain them, we just train them.
