Scientists Achieve Direct Counterfactual Quantum Communication For The First Time

Quantum communication is a strange beast, but one of the weirdest proposed forms of it is called counterfactual communication – a type of quantum communication where no particles travel between two recipients.

Theoretical physicists have long proposed that such a form of communication would be possible, but now, for the first time, researchers have been able to experimentally achieve it – transferring a black and white bitmap image from one location to another without sending any physical particles.

If that sounds a little too out-there for you, don’t worry, this is quantum mechanics, after all. It’s meant to be complicated. But once you break it down, counterfactual quantum communication actually isn’t as bizarre as it sounds.
Leroy's Secret War Journals: 2016: Blazing the Path AheadFirst up, let’s talk about how this differs from regular quantum communication, also known as quantum teleportation, because isn’t that also a form of particle-less information transfer?

Well, not quite. Regular quantum teleportation is based on the principle of entanglement – two particles that become inextricably linked so that whatever happens to one will automatically affect the other, no matter how far apart they are.

This is what Einstein referred to as “spooky action at a distance“, and scientists have already used it to send messages over vast distances.

But that form of quantum teleportation still relies on particle transmission in some form or another. The two particles usually need to be together when they’re entangled before being sent to the people on either end of the message (so, they start in one place, and need to be transmitted to another before communication can occur between them).

Alternatively, particles can be entangled at a distance, but it usually requires another particle, such as photons (particles of light), to travel between the two.
23 Free Website Background - WallpaperboatDirect counterfactual quantum communication on the other hands relies on something other than quantum entanglement. Instead, it uses a phenomenon called the quantum Zeno effect.

Very simply, the quantum Zeno effect occurs when an unstable quantum system is repeatedly measured.

In the quantum world, whenever you look at a system, or measure it, the system changes. And in this case, unstable particles can never decay while they’re being measured (just like the proverbial watched kettle that will never boil), so the quantum Zeno effect creates a system that’s effectively frozen with a very high probability.
[48+] Dynamic Wallpaper Windows 10 on WallpaperSafari

Counterfactual quantum communication is based on this quantum Zeno effect, and is defined as the transfer of a quantum state from one site to another without any quantum or classical particle being transmitted between them.

This requires a quantum channel to run between two sites, which means there’s always a small probability that a quantum particle will cross the channel. If that happens, the system is discarded and a new one is set up.

To set up such a complex system, researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China placed two single-photon detectors in the output ports of the last of an array of beam splitters.
Because of the quantum Zeno effect, the system is frozen in a certain state, so it’s possible to predict which of the detectors would ‘click’ whenever photons passed through. A series of nested interferometers measure the state of the system to make sure it doesn’t change.

It works based on the fact that, in the quantum world, all light particles can be fully described by wave functions, rather than as particles. So by embedding messages in light the researchers were able to transmit this message without ever directly sending a particle.

The team explains that the basic idea for this set up came from holography technology.
16+ Dynamic Wallpaper Windows Pics“In the 1940s, a new imaging technique – holography – was developed to record not only light intensity but also the phase of light,” the researchers write in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“One may then pose the question: Can the phase of light itself be used for imaging? The answer is yes.”

The basic idea is this – someone wants to send an image to Alice using only light (which acts as a wave, not a particle, in the quantum realm).

Alice transfers a single photon to the nested interferometer, where it can be detected by three single-photon detectors: D0, D1, and Df.

If D0 or D1 ‘click’, Alice can conclude a logic result of one or zero. If Df clicks, the result is considered inconclusive.
Animated Abstract Wallpapers - Top Free Animated Abstract Backgrounds ...As Christopher Packham explains for Phys.org:

“After the communication of all bits, the researchers were able to reassemble the image – a monochrome bitmap of a Chinese knot. Black pixels were defined as logic 0, while white pixels were defined as logic 1 …

In the experiment, the phase of light itself became the carrier of information, and the intensity of the light was irrelevant to the experiment.”

Not only is this a big step forward for quantum communication, the team explains it’s technology that could also be used for imaging sensitive ancient artefacts that couldn’t survive direct light shined on them.
Dynamic Desktop Wallpaper - WallpaperSafariThe results will now need to be verified by external researchers to make sure what the researchers saw was a true example of counterfactual quantum communication.

Either way, it’s a pretty cool demonstration of just how bizarre and unexplored the quantum world is.

The research has been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

How the Greatest Mathematical Mind of the 20th Century Proved the Existence of God

May 1, 2022 | by Dr. Joshua M. Moritz

That time a math genius proved God and you never heard about it.

Albert Einstein would often remark that he went to his office at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study “just to have the privilege of walking home with Kurt Gödel.” A good friend of Einstein, Gödel was the most brilliant and influential mathematician and logician of the 20th century. A master of proofs who ran non-Euclidean circles around the most brilliant minds of his day, Gödel devastated philosophical paradigms with the theorems he developed, and he laid bare long-held assumptions and cherished axioms as fundamentally unprovable. Gödel also mathematically demonstrated something that many thought was beyond the purview of proof—namely, the existence of God.

Does 1+1= 2?

Once upon a time, two of the 20th century’s most influential mathematical minds, Bertrand Russell and Alfred N. Whitehead, attempted to prove that 1+1=2. Their Principia Mathematica, the 20th century’s most ambitious work of mathematics, endeavored to describe a set of axioms and inference rules in symbolic logic from which all mathematical truths could, in principle, be proven. After 378 pages, they were able to talk about how one could prove that 1+1=2, but they couldn’t actually do it because they hadn’t managed to define “addition” in a logically consistent way.

Around the same time, mathematician David Hilbert wanted to develop a logical system that included all correct mathematical reasoning for any particular mathematical area and to prove that it contained no contradictions. In response, Gödel published a series of papers showing why Russell, Whitehead, and Hilbert’s quests for mathematical completeness were doomed to fail. Gödel proved definitively that neither the Principia Mathematica (nor any other attempt) could ever prove 1+1=2 in an internally consistent, logical way. In his incompleteness theorems, Gödel showed that mathematics alone could not establish the logical consistency of mathematics through mathematical proofs. Because one always has to make unprovable assumptions about one’s fundamental axioms, all mathematical systems are incomplete, and every mathematical system will have some statements that can never be proven.

Using mathematics that revolutionized the world of logic and science, Gödel showed that there is more to truth than can be captured by proof.

Gödel’s incompleteness theorems show that if a formal system is 1. finitely specified, 2. large enough to include arithmetic, and 3. consistent, then it is incomplete. His groundbreaking logical demonstration—that all mathematical systems have limits—was a lesson in humility to the “Logical Positivists” of Gödel’s day, who asserted that scientific and mathematical investigations of the universe could discover all truths and have no limits. Gödel showed that if science is based on mathematics, and mathematics cannot discover all truths, then science, in principle, cannot discover all truths. Using mathematics that revolutionized the world of logic and science, Gödel showed that there is more to truth than can be captured by proof.

Is there any proof that God exists?

Having demonstrated the incompleteness of all mathematical systems, Gödel also sought to show that the universe would be incomplete and inconsistent without an afterlife and a creator God. Gödel reasoned:

For it is by no means chaotic or random, but, as science shows, everything is permeated by remarkable regularity and order. Order is a form of rationality.

If the world is rationally constructed and has meaning, then there must be such a thing as an afterlife. For what sense would there be in creating a being (man), which has such a vast realm of possibilities for its own development and for relationships with others, and then not allowing it to realize even a thousandth of those possibilities? That would be almost like someone laying, with the greatest effort and expense, the foundations for a house and then letting it all go to seed again.

phys.org

But does one have reason to suppose that the world is rationally constructed? I believe so. For it is by no means chaotic or random, but, as science shows, everything is permeated by remarkable regularity and order. Order is a form of rationality.

How would one envision a second or another life? About that, there are naturally only guesses. However, it is interesting that it is precisely modern science that provides support for such a thing. For it shows that this world of ours, with all the stars and planets in it, had a beginning and most probably will also have an end (that is, it will literally come to “nothing”). But why, then, should there exist only this one world – for just as we one day found ourselves in this world, without knowing why and where from, so can the same thing be repeated in the same way in another world.

Within the context of seeking truth beyond proof, Gödel developed a mathematical argument to demonstrate the logical consistency and necessity of God’s existence. Gödel’s proof elaborated upon the ontological proof of Gottfried Leibniz, the founder of computer science who invented both calculus and binary code in the late 1600s. Gödel sought to fix the fundamental weaknesses of and remove inconsistencies from Leibniz’s proof as well as address all of the classic philosophical criticisms of previous ontological proofs, including Immanuel Kant‘s well-known objection that existence should not be treated as a predicate.

The ontological proof of Gödel harnesses higher-order mathematical logic to show that the existence of God is a necessary truth. “God” in Gödel’s proof is defined as a “God-like object.” In order for an object to be “God-like,” it must have every good or positive property. Also, a God-like object has no negative properties. In the context of Gödel’s proof, an object (x) has “the God-like property” if and only if for every property (φ), if φ is a positive property, then x has property φ. Because being “God-like” is a positive property, it is possible that that property exists in an object (x). After mathematically defining essential properties, Gödel then shows that it is necessary that there is an object x that has the God-like property. If a God-like object (i.e., God) has every good property, and necessary existence is a good property, then a God-like object (i.e., God) must exist.

While Gödel privately believed in God and read the Bible every Sunday, fear of ridicule from his academic peers made him reluctant to present his ontological proof publicly. Gödel thus never published his proof for the existence of God and only passed it on to a colleague and friend to publish because he believed he was going to die.

Putting Gödel to the Test with AI

For many years Gödel’s work was inaccessible and difficult to assess because very few could reach the levels of mathematical, philosophical, and logical sophistication required even to understand it—let alone to evaluate it for logical and mathematical consistency. Recently, with the help of Artificial Intelligence specially designed to evaluate higher-order logic and advanced theoretical mathematics, researchers decided to put Gödel’s ontological proof for the existence of God to the test.

Demonstrating the consistency of Gödel’s ontological proof, AI researchers concluded that “from Gödel’s premises, the computer proved: necessarily, there exists God” and also that “this God-like entity is unique, i.e., monotheism is a consequence of Gödel’s theory.” The AI also showed that “prominent objections to his proof…are currently not on a par with Gödel’s work…with respect to technical precision and persuasive power.” From this research, it is clear that Gödel’s ontological argument succeeds in that “it shows that Belief in a (God-like) supreme being is not trivially irrational. There are consistent axiomatizations that non-trivially entail the necessary existence of a God-like being.”

Yet the results of such AI calculations about metaphysics still rely on fundamental assumptions regarding the mathematical axioms that one chooses in the first place. As the AI researchers reflect, “as for any axiomatization…it remains a ‘matter of faith to believe in the truth of the proposed axioms in the actual universe.” This, of course, would come as no surprise to Gödel—as it was he, after all, who conclusively demonstrated to the world that all mathematical and scientific endeavors are ultimately unprovable and that such endeavors always require a leap of faith to get off the metaphysical ground.

           Warm and tender.

My Friends,
when you think

wars never end.
Hatred ignited to
the destruction of precious
God given, Human Life,
forever spirals
out of control.
Without the intervention
of Love and Forgiveness,
it too begins
over and over and over
again.

I am truly proud
of the Love expressed by President Truman
following the devastation of World War II.
America’s post-war commitment to Europe and Japan
was a beautiful demonstration
our Nation’s character.

Secretary of State George C. Marshall
said on June 5, 1947:
“Our policy is directed not against any country or doctrine
but against hunger, poverty, desperation and chaos.
Its purpose should be the revival of a working economy
in the world so as to permit the emergence
of political and social conditions
in which free institutions can exist.”

Yes,
the United States of America
worked to rebuild post-war Japan and Europe,
investing $22 billion assistance
across 16 war-torn nations from 1946 to 1952.

  Love
My Dear Friends,
means what it means
everywhere in the New Testament
– to do good to, to care for, to bless,
to sacrifice for.

Jesus teaches us
that we should not return
evil for evil, harm for harm,
but rather return good for evil
to anyone who harms us.

Harry S. Truman faced some of the most complex issues to ever face any World leader.

“But I say unto you,
Love your enemies,
bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you,
and Pray for them.”
Matthew 5:44

This act of Christian compassion
following the worst war in History,
stopped the cycle of hatred and violence
that started with World War I
and continued into World War II.
This act of Forgiveness and Love
turned adversaries into allies
and prevented
World War III.
.

If you look deep enough
into the Hearts of others,
there is good
in every Human Being.
We are all
worthy of Redemption,
Forgiveness,
Salvation.

“God’s desire
is for all to be saved:
This is good and acceptable
in the sight of God our Savior,
who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the Knowledge
of the Truth.”

1 Timothy 2:3-4

God
Loves us,
each and everyone.

Countless
are the times
that individual
Human Beings,
who strayed
from the Righteous Path,
have seen the
Light.

These beautiful People
opened their Hearts
and let the LOVE
of God
flow over them.

There is no greater I, than We.

The mind of man
can be filled
with myth, illusion and
contradiction.
We
can be persuaded
to do anything.
History
is replete
with our errors.

But God’s Love
can touch us
one time,
and last
for a Lifetime.

Our Love
is nothing to fear.
But
the absence of Love
is the cause
of all our fears.

There is
a vast and deep ocean
of tears
shed
because the fearful
never saw
the Light of Love
streaming down
from Above.

The way back,
cannot be found
in the dark.
One
must clearly see
the way.
And the path
lies through
the beautiful, precious
Human Heart,
as it listens
to the Word
of God.

If
we but ask,
God
will show us
the way.
Our Prayers
will
be answered.

There is
no greater force
on Earth,
than the Power
of Love.

Goodnight.

One must clearly see the way.

Into the Rare / A World Without Cancer: Is Prevention the Cure? / Friday: at School (Shakespeare)

Out of the common place.
Into the rare.
How we ascend
from where,
in dark despair,
we are placed
in harm’s way,
can become
a Miraculous moment,
a truly Sacred day.

For
when we Pray,
the Song our Heart sings,
is music
to the Mind of God.
Yes,
my Friend,
He is listening,
patiently awaiting
the sound of your
Heart,
to beat in time
with His.

A Miraculous moment, a truly Sacred day.

As I survey
all that I see,
I am finally free.
The Presence that surrounds me,
Magnificent and Beautiful to behold,
if the Truth be told,
is the Existence of God.
He enters all that you are,
is all you can be.
Let Him lift you up,
from where you are,
to Horizons
only now
you will see.

“Oh Lord, my God
When I in awesome wonder

Considered all the worlds
Thy Hands have made.

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy art throughout the Universe displayed.
Then sings my Soul,
my Savior God to Thee

“How great Thou art,
how great Thou art!”
Carl G. Boberg / Stuart K. Hine

Enveloped
by the Perpetual Light of Love,
Absolute Beauty
in its purest Perfection,
YOU
become One
with all the cherished
Reborn.

And
suffering and sorrow
need be no more.

  The Perpetual Light of Love.

God’s Purpose
can be revealed,
not to you –
but to your Heart,
in the warmth
of His Glorious Light,
the Light
of His Precious Love.

Let our Father
keep you safe
in the warmth
of His Loving Embrace,
and fill your precious Soul
with His Abundant
Grace.

Trust in Him.

Let anguish and hate
vanish like shadows at
dawn.
Do not wait
until you perish,
to rest in Peace
and feel Embraced
by Love
Pure and Chaste.

            Like shadows at dawn.

The innocence
of your Heart
need not
be slain by the blindness
of the night,
from never knowing
what is good,
what is right.
From all that’s dark,
peals out an Everlasting Song.
For in the dark and bitter cold
of things,
one can always hear
a song that someone sings.
This Song
is a Sacred Thing,
Born of Colors
in Rainbow rings,
clear
and penetrating
like the Robin sings.

The journey
to God in Prayer
is Glorious & exciting.
Cast your lonely eyes
to Heaven Above.
I invite you on this Journey.
Let your Prayers
float up to Heaven,
surrounded by Angels
singing in Paradise.

The warmth of His Glorious Light.

Rejoice.

Meet
yourself
along the Way.
And as you journey
the road of Life,
know the end of that road
is nearer than ever.
Find Peace
in knowing the Song
your Life sings
can put your mind to rest,
make you at ease.

“O what Peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God
in Prayer.”

Joseph M. Scriven
In 1855 he wrote a poem called
“Pray Without Ceasing” to comfort his ailing mother.
This poem was later set to music by
Charles Coverse and retitled
“What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

May the Perpetual Light
of God’s Love
Shine upon you.
Rest In Peace,
until
you Rest in
Peace.

Goodnight.

 Magnificent and Beautiful to behold.

Author

Max Macaluso

Max is the Technology, Biopharma & Health Care Bureau Chief at Fool.com. Prior to joining the Fool, he completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of Cambridge and an MBA at the College des Ingenieurs.

In the following interview, Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo, author of the book       A World Without Cancer, discusses the importance of cancer prevention with Motley Fool health care analyst Max Macaluso.

Macaluso: Dr. Cuomo is the author of the new book, A World Without Cancer, and she’s also the daughter of our former Governor Cuomo, and the sister of our current Governor Cuomo.

It’s been about 40 years – actually more than 40 years – since 1971, when the war on cancer was declared by President Richard Nixon. In that time, we’ve spent over $90 billion on cancer research, and yet we are still seeing cancer incidence rates rise.

We haven’t come as far as you’d think we should have, for that amount of time and money spent, so I said to myself, with all the horrific effects of cancer on the lives of my patients, friends, and family, it was time to delve into the subject and give it a fresh perspective.

Macaluso: In your book you talk a lot about the misconceptions of cancer prevention. What do you think the top misconception is today?

Cuomo: I think most people, even people who are quite knowledgeable, think that cancer is an inevitability. “No matter what I do, I’m going to get cancer. Either I’ll inherit it, or I’ll grow old enough and I’ll get cancer just because I’ve grown old.”

That’s clearly not the case. We know that over 50% of all cancers are preventable. Attention to diet, exercise, limiting alcohol, ending smoking, protecting our skin from the sun, and taking vitamin D all contribute to a cancer-free life and the environmental toxins that are in our midst can be eliminated, or at least limited so that they don’t raise our risk of cancer.

Macaluso: What are some of the specific things we’re not paying enough attention to when it comes to prevention? Let’s start with diet.

Cuomo: OK, diet. You know the old expression, “You are what you eat.” To a large extent, that’s very true. A plant-based diet is what nearly all the experts say is not only the healthiest in terms of preventing heart disease and diabetes, but also reducing our risk for cancer.

If you look at your plate, your daily plate, two-thirds of it should be fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains like brown rice or quinoa, or even a whole grain pasta – and then a very small amount of lean protein like fish or chicken, and a minimal amount of red meat. That is the cancer prevention diet, but it also, as I say, decreases your risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Limiting alcohol – that means you really can’t afford to go out once a week and binge. They say no more than one drink a day of alcohol – that includes wine – for a woman and no more than two for a man, and it may be even less than that, but certainly you want to watch your alcohol intake.

Macaluso: I can tell you, after reading your book I definitely modified my diet. I’m drinking more green tea and a lot more vegetables.

Cuomo: Excellent. Green tea has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.

Macaluso: Let’s shift the discussion from diet to environmental factors.

Cuomo: Yes, environment; very important. In fact, the United Nations just issued a report last week, that the World Health Organization was involved in as well, in which it said that there are so many of the so-called “endocrine disrupting chemicals,” such as BPA, which are in our plastic water bottles, other beverages, also food containers, the lining of the cans of food, soup – a can of soup, a can of beans – etc. Even a cashier receipt can have BPA.

Parabens – are in everything from facial wash to shampoo, toothpaste – these are endocrine-disrupting chemicals. What does that mean?

That means they modify the development of hormones in our body. They affect our endocrine system, which has been linked to cancers of the breast, prostate, thyroid, and others. Also linked to obesity and diabetes, and they even drew a link to autism.

For all those reasons we want to rid our products, our personal care products at the very least, of these harmful chemicals, so there is good news on that note.

Macaluso: In your book, you talk a lot about BPAs and all the things in consumer packaging. I understand that Johnson & Johnson is leading the charge in making a commitment to rid their products of these chemicals. Can you speak a little bit about that?

Cuomo: Yes. I applaud Johnson & Johnson. They are the first major consumer products company in the United States to voluntarily commit to removing all harmful chemicals from their personal care products.

I would like to see other major companies, like Procter & Gamble and Colgate and L’Oreal follow the good example of Johnson & Johnson. Why should consumers be at risk for washing their face or brushing their teeth?

Macaluso: Excellent point. Going along with that, are there any other companies focused on organic products or specific foods,  that you might applaud?

Cuomo: Yes. I am happy to share with you, in terms of being BPA-free in all of their food packaging materials, the Hain Celestial Group. First of all, they’re the market leader in organic products, I’ve learned, and they include products such as Arrowhead Mills, Health Valley, Earth’s Best baby food, Walnut Acres juices, DeBoles pasta, Imagine sauces and soups.

They have made a commitment to BPA-free in all of their food packaging, cans, etc., and they also are very conscious in terms of sustainability for their packaging materials, so big applause for Hain Celestial Group.

Also, Whole Foods 365 brands, many of their brands are BPA-free, Trader Joe’s, and Eden Foods are some that come to mind.

Macaluso: Is there anything that consumers can do, or do we just have to wait for these companies to change their practices?

Cuomo: What you can do as an educated consumer is to read the labels. Certainly, if you don’t see “BPA free,” you have to question, “Does this packaging material contain BPA?”

In terms of your personal care products, read the labels. If you see anything with “paraben” in it – that means methylparaben, butylparaben – anything that has that phrase, “paraben,” avoid it completely. Also another word, difficult to pronounce, phthalates, another endocrine disruptor.

Basically, Max, anything you can’t pronounce you would be wise to stay away from it.

Macaluso: Yeah, I think that’s a good rule of thumb. Let’s talk a little bit about obesity. I think a lot of people might not realize that obesity is linked to certain types of cancers.

Cuomo: Yes. Obesity is linked to quite a few cancers. Scientists have pointed to the fact that breast cancer and colon cancer are definitely linked to obesity, but there are many other cancers that are as well.

What do we want to do? How do we avoid this epidemic? Do you realize, in the past 30 years the rate of obesity among children has tripled, and it has doubled for adults? Everyone agrees we have an epidemic. What do we do about it?

It’s all about education, isn’t it? We have to start with our very youngest children, teaching them what is a healthful diet. It’s not a bag of chips at every meal. It’s not a can of soda at every meal. If children don’t have the tools, the strategies, how can we expect them to eat healthfully?

Often times, what children learn in school in terms of vegetables and a plant-based diet, they will take home and they will be the teachers for their parents and caregivers. Isn’t that a wonderful thing?

I really feel education is the key here.

Macaluso: Once again, focused more on prevention than treatments.

Cuomo: Prevention is so important.

Macaluso: Let’s talk about tobacco products a little bit. Not all smokers get lung cancer, but it is a major risk factor.

Cuomo: Tobacco is a scourge and as you say, certainly we’ve proven that it causes lung cancer but it causes many other cancers as well; cancers of the digestive tract, even pancreas and bladder, have been linked to smoking.

What do we do? Well, years ago there was something called the Master Settlement Agreement, where all of the tobacco companies agreed to contribute billions of dollars to a fund that would later be given to the states with the intention that those funds be used for tobacco cessation programs and other tobacco elimination programs.

However, as I understand it the law is that the money goes to the states, but the states are not compelled to use it for that purpose. In these economically trying times, states are using it for infrastructure, they’re using it for a lot of other reasons.

We have to get back to preserving that money for tobacco cessation. Right now we have an increasing trend in smoking among adolescents, and among people of low education and low income.

Again, the burden of their illnesses is going to impact all of us. It doesn’t only impact the person who is going to be unfortunate enough to get lung cancer; it affects our health care costs, and we all absorb that, so it behooves all of us to make sure those funds are used properly.

Macaluso: Let’s shift the conversation from prevention to treatment. Your book does talk about some major successes in medicine, in the treatment of cancer. One in particular is Novartis’ Gleevec. This is a treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia.

What I was wondering, reading your book, was why haven’t we been able to replicate the success of Gleevec and chronic myeloid leukemia with other types of cancer, namely solid tumors?

Cuomo: That’s a very astute question. Chronic myeloid or myelogenous leukemia, CML, is based on a single genetic mutation. This terrible disease is actually a very simple disease, unlike breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer – these more common cancers – which are several orders of magnitude more complicated than that.

Therefore, Gleevec can attack CML and effectively cure it because it’s a very simple disease. Breast, prostate, lung cancer, are all much more complicated and it’s not as easy to treat them with a single chemotherapeutic agent or a monoclonal antibody, and that’s what Gleevec is.

Cuomo: prevention is the most effective strategy we have for ridding ourselves of cancer, and yet we devote so little time and attention to it.

My agenda is not to draw attention away from treatment. Again, there will always be patients who require treatment, and they should have it. What I am saying is that we have the intellectual resources and the financial capability to achieve both.

The National Cancer Prevention Institute would do just that. It would be based on a collaborative focused effort divided into teams, each team addressing a specific cancer type, and it would draw from many disciplines.

It would be a trans-disciplinary approach, including epidemiology, cancer biology, microbiology, immunology, engineering, pharmaceuticals, even urban planning; everything you need to decrease cancer incidence.

I don’t see that happening right now, and a lot of people that have been studying this for a long time feel it is time now to do this kind of approach, the way we did for the moonshot and for the Human Genome Project, both of which took a collaborative effort which had team science at its core. That’s what we should use for the prevention of cancer.

Macaluso: Dr. Cuomo, recently there was an Institute of Medicine report that addressed cancer care. Can you speak a little bit about that?

Cuomo: Yes. I was very pleased to see some experts in the country, such as Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Dr. Peter Bach, contribute to this workshop last October. They just issued a report from the Institute of Medicine addressing the question, “How do we contain cancer costs and what can we be doing better?”

Some of the key points were, what should a cancer therapy do? How do we assess its effectiveness and its value?

Well, it should increase our overall survival. It should increase the patient’s survival. It should increase the patient’s quality of life, while at the same time it should have very few side effects – certainly not life-threatening side effects or side effects that degrade that quality of life – and it should contain costs. It should not be an unsustainable cost.

I thought that was a very good way of focusing attention on the question of how do we end the spiral of cancer care cost in America.

Macaluso: Thank you very much. Once again, Dr. Margaret Cuomo, author of the book A World Without Cancer.
