From Seeker to Finder  

Discovering Every Day Happiness

I’ve been alive 25,567 days. That is a long time. All I have ever wanted during that time was to be happy-nothing more.

I thought I knew what I needed to do to be happy, so I did all those things: I earned a Ph.D. in mathematics, married a wonderful woman, raised two lovely children, pursued a successful career as a mathematics professor, and became wealthy. Everything seemed fine. But the joy, satisfaction, and peace of mind I so desired continued to elude me.

At age 35, I began to realize that the “right” things would not get me what I wanted, so I actively sought happiness by doing workshops, reading self-help books, leading seminars, practicing self-hypnosis, and meditating. I became a seeker.

Only in the past few years did real transformation begin. I am no longer a seeker; I am a finder. Despite doubting in the past that I would ever succeed, I have found the happiness and peace of mind I had long sought.

I actually love life.

I love the world, and I especially love and accept myself. I have discovered that we can really love the world and all the people in it, despite the violence, hatred, crime, hypocrisy, greed, suffering, and starvation.

I am celebrating my 70th birthday as I write the first pages of this book. During this 70-year journey, I have discovered many things. To my utter amazement, I found that learning to be happy is not mystical, mysterious, or magical . Happiness is an ordinary skill that anybody can learn and master through practice, like driving a car or playing a violin. And like driving a car or playing the violin, happiness is an experiential skill which cannot be learned from reading books.

If happiness cannot be taught in a book, why am I writing this? The first purpose of this book is to tell you what does not work. In my quest for happiness, I pursued many fruitless paths. What if I had achieved happiness earlier in life, rather than having spent decades following roads leading nowhere? Had I read a book such as this, I might have avoided some of these pitfalls and shortened some of these detours. By sharing my experience, I hope to spare you years of looking in the wrong places.

Most people spend their entire lifetimes seeking happiness in places where, at best, it is only temporarily experienced. Their parents, teachers, and religious leaders falsely promised them as children that hard work, financial success, acquisition of goods, and approval from others will make them happy. Our culture spreads these illusory expectations through movies, books, TV, and advertising. When people achieve these goals hoping to be happy and then realize that they are not in fact happy, their unfulfilled expectations lead to disappointment, dissatisfaction, disillusionment, and discouragement. To make matters worse, they often blame themselves for this perceived failure, leading to feelings of powerlessness and despair.

Other people, having read books or attended seminars, are seekers. They know that they cannot achieve happiness through financial success, acquisition of goods, or approval of others. They know that happiness results from experiencing gratitude, acceptance, self-love, and forgiveness. They have learned that the path to happiness is through awareness of their thoughts, doubting their beliefs, changing their points of view, and expressing unconditional love. Yet they remain seekers. Although they know what to do to become happy, the true joy, peace of mind, satisfaction, and contentment which they fervently seek continues to elude them.

I have met dozens of such seekers, who are unwittingly driving with their left foot on the brake pedal. Until they discover and confront how they are holding themselves back, they will forever remain seekers. In later chapters, I will describe my good fortune in finding teachers who not only made me aware of how I was pressing that pedal, but also assured me that it was safe to release my foot from the brake.

The second reason for writing this book is to tell you about the path by which I have achieved my current state of happiness, joy, and peace of mind. Perhaps it will inspire you to pursue a similar goal. Will my path work for you? I do not know. I know that it has worked for me, as well as for many other people. I also know others who, after learning about this path, have decided not to pursue it. I respect their decision. It is not for everybody.

When you watch young children, have you noticed their obvious excitement in being alive, their natural curiosity, their joy, their spontaneity? Two minutes after being hurt, they are laughing and ready to play. We were all once young children. What happened to our spark, spirit, and spunk? Can this joy of Life be revived? Why do so many of us instead experience cynicism, resignation, and discontent? Must we take Life so seriously? As you read, I encourage you to think about these questions and how they relate to your own Life.

My last reason for this book is that I enjoy writing it. May you derive as much joy and inspiration from reading it as I do from writing it.

Dr. Otto Warburg:
The Man Who Discovered
the Prime Cause of Cancer

Dr. Otto Warburg was a Nobel Prize-winning German scientist who dedicated his life to researching cancer and in the 1920’s discovered it’s prime cause. 

Frustrated by the lack of acceptance of his ideas, Warburg often spelled out the axiom attributed to Max Plank, “Science advances one funeral at a time.”

Like all breakthrough scientific discoveries and the scientists who’ve discovered them, they are often laughed at for decades before they are acknowledged as true.

This occurs not because their conclusions are unreasonable; it occurs because either their peers don’t understand their work or because industries profiting from the lie go to great efforts to prevent the truth from becoming widely known. 

“A lie can travel halfway around the world while truth is putting on its shoes,” Mark Twain was quoted as saying.

The highly-respected Nobel Laureate Dr. Otto Warburg was one such scientist.

 

Dr. Otto Warburg: ‘Cancer is a Metabolic Disease’

Born in Germany in 1883, Dr. Otto Warburg was a physiologist, medical doctor and Nobel Laureate who spent much of his life devoted to researching and understanding cancer. 

During the first world war he served as an officer in the elite cavalry regiment and was awarded the iron cross (first class) for bravery.
.

Warburg stood out among his peers as one of the most highly regarded scientists in the world.  In 1931, he was the sole recipient of the nobel prize in physiology or medicine. Over the course of his career he was nominated for a nobel prize
47 times.

His work was published in a number of books including his keystone volume The Metabolism of Tumours in 1931. In a presentation to other Nobel Laureates in 1966 he made the following bold statement:
.

“The cause of cancer is no longer a mystery; we know it occurs whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements.”
.

Warburg hypothesized that cancer cell growth was fuelled by tumor cells producing energy (adenosine triphosphate or ATP) by the anaerobic breakdown or fermentation of glucose.

 

Whereas healthy cells generate energy primarily through a reaction between oxygen and glucose (they “oxidize” glucose) within the mitochondria of the cell, cancer cells produce energy through the fermentation of glucose in the absence of oxygen. 

The end result of energy production by healthy cells is the production of carbon dioxide, which promotes health by serving as a potent antioxidant and by shuttling more oxygen into cells.

Conversely, the end result of glucose fermentation by cancer cells is lactic acid or lactate, which can be consistently found in high levels within the bodies of people with cancer.

“Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by fermentation of
SUGAR.”

Dr. Warburg made it clear that the root cause of cancer was oxygen deficiency caused by malfunctioning mitochondria. 

But as highly-regarded as he was by his peers, none of them took his finding seriously: It was almost as if they saw him as an otherwise brilliant scientist with a single flaw. 

Frustrated by the lack of acceptance of his ideas, Warburg often spelled out the axiom attributed to Max Plank, “Science advances one funeral at a time.”

It wasn’t until the past decade that Warburg’s work has begun experiencing a resurgence, and publishing activity of scientific papers worldwide has begun to soar. 

It took almost 100 years, but scientists are finally beginning to acknowledge that Warburg had been right all along.

Modern Research Validates Otto Warburg’s Discovery

When a cell is deprived of oxygen, it undergoes a metabolic shift – from the oxidation of glucose to glucose fermentation –
aptly titled The Warburg Effect. 
.

The second this shift in metabolism occurs is the moment it becomes a cancer cell.  It’s also the moment that genomic instability and mutations begin to occur.

Warburg knew it – and in recent years, a myriad of other scientific studies from across the world have verified it: Only after a cell is deprived of oxygen (hypoxia) do genetic mutations begin to occur, or said differently, hypoxia is the primary driver of genetic mutations.

Carlos Sonnenschein and Anna Soto of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachussets wrote in a study they published in 2000, “We argue that it is necessary to abandon the somatic mutation theory.”

That was 17 years ago, and the medical establishment is still pushing the outdated, fairytale (yet profitable) story that cancer is caused by genetic mutations.

(I hope this inspires you to stop believing in authority and to question everything you’re told.)

Thanks to the research of Dr. Otto Warburg and many others, we now know that cancer is a metabolic disease caused by oxygen deficiency – not a genetic disease caused by genomic mutations.

Homing in on The Root Cause of All Disease

To broaden our understanding of the effects of hypoxia on cells, Dr. Arthur C. Guyton – author of one of the most widely used medical textbooks in the world, The Textbook of Medical Physiology – made this extraordinary statement in 1976:

“All chronic pain, suffering and diseases are caused from a lack of oxygen at the cell level.”

Suddenly, our quest to discover how to prevent and cure cancer, we’ve not only identified cancer’s prime cause, but in doing so we’ve come face-to-face with the possibility that what cures cancer, cures all diseases.

We have busy, demanding lives. You may feel pulled in different directions and experience stress from dealing with work, family and other matters, leaving little time for yourself. Learning to balance your life with some time for yourself will pay off with big benefits – a healthy outlook and better health.

Steps you can take:

• Stay in touch with family and friends.
• Be involved in your community.
• Maintain a positive attitude and do things that make you happy.
• Keep your curiosity alive. Lifelong learning is beneficial to your health.
• Healthy intimacy takes all forms but is always free of coercion.
• Learn to recognize and manage stress in your life. Signs of stress include trouble sleeping, frequent headaches and stomach problems; being angry a lot; and turning to food, drugs and alcohol to relieve stress.
• Good ways to deal with stress include regular exercise, healthy eating habits and relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing or meditation. Talking to trusted family members and friends can help a lot. Interacting with your Faith community is helpful in times of stress.
• Get enough sleep and rest. Adults need around eight hours of sleep a night.
• Talk to your health care provider if you feel depressed for more than a few days; depression is a treatable illness. Signs of depression include feeling empty and sad, crying a lot, loss of interest in life, and thoughts of death or suicide. If you or someone you know has thoughts of suicide, get help right away. Call 911, a local crisis center or (800) SUICIDE.

Whatever is truly Real is projected.

The Story of Life
may be happy or sad,
one of being lonely
or with another you truly Love.
It may be truth
or become fiction,
real
or unreal.

But the stories
of our Lives
have something in common:
the journey
has nothing to do
with you,
and everything to do
with your Heart.

Feeling alone,
being the only one
who knows your vision
of Truth,

Following lunch, we will caravan to Flight Deck (817) 246-2710 (info@fdtp.com) located a half mile west of Ridgmar Mall, at the Cherry Lane exit off I-30, at 7751 Scott St. in Fort Worth, to enjoy jumping and acting, otherwise, a little abnormal.

                  PICK UP will be at  FLIGHT DECK  at 3:00 p.m.

DESTINATIONS:  FLIGHT DECK is where FUN and fitness take flight! It integrates rebounding (trampoline jumping) along with strength and flexibility training. Reconnect with your inner child. Flight Deck features a mix of aerobics, core strengthening, coordination & flexibility exercises.

WE ARE OF SINGLE MIND

My friends,
The awareness of
Our ability, or disability,
As some may view it,
To think of one,
And ONLY one,
Thing at a time,
Can become a gift of Life.

But this phenomenon can become
A deadly exercise in poor judgement,
If you think you can text while driving.
Not fully knowing that the human brain
Simply switches rapidly back and forth
From one thought to another,
Has cost much needless suffering
And many lives.

You, and I, are capable of thinking
About only ONE thing at a time.
Research (read more) has proven this
Time after time.
Oh, there are exceptions,
Very few,
But these exceptions are not me,
And they are not you.

 The myth of multitasking has never been stronger.
But researchers prove it is a myth
And they have the data to prove it.

As we discussed in my class in
Philosophy, The Art of Wondering,
Humans don’t do things simultaneously.
Instead, we switch our attention from task to task
Extremely fast,
Or, if you are like me,
A little slower.

And, if you are like me,
Drink another fruit smoothie
And think only about
Getting the very last drop.
Staring into the bottom of the cup
Is a deep enough thought,
When you stop thinking about it.
For those of you who referred to me
As an old smoothie,
You were about 40% right.
The rest is made up of water
Three brain cells
And one nerve ending.
I keep asking my students
Not to step on that.

 We humans may eventually evolve
Into beings that can think
More than ONE thought
At a time,
Perhaps, even thinking about
EVERYTHING at once,
Much like the quantum computers
We are now creating.

Such a God like quality

But so far,
Our single-mindedness has brought us
The internet,
Fruit smoothies (Thank you Lord!) and
The Atomic Bomb.

Hidden very deep within the folds
Of our SINGULAR ability
To think one thought at a time,
Lies a secret to a happy life.
Knowing that you can think about
One, and only ONE thing
At a time
Is a truly precious insight.

It is your awareness

That is of value,
Not the knowing itself,
Not the thing you know you can
Or cannot do.

Hang in there.
I am swimming to
The shallow end of the pool,
Running out of air,
Breathing deep and
Taking in more water.
This is where more children my age go
To have fun.

Knowing that your mind can harbor
Only ONE thought at a time –
Being fully aware of this –
Can place you in control
Of the next moment,

In control of your life.

If in THIS moment
You are sad, regretful or depressed,
Quickly,
Do something else,
Something you may call distracting,
That you know would not be unpleasant, painful,
Something that would be, in fact, pleasurable,
Anything, including just jumping into the pool.
Hey, try it with all your clothes on –
Then you’ll have something to remember!
That will really take your mind off your miseries.
You will laugh so hard
You may not be able to get out of the pool
By yourself, without help.
So, pull the helper
Into the water with you!
That will make your day,

Be uneventful.

I pushed my sweet LeVonna
Into a swimming pool fully clothed.
She never strolled by another pool
Standing close to me again.
It still makes my day
Just thinking about it.

Are you getting the picture yet?

By the way,
Pushing her into the pool
Was the last moment
I felt any kind of control of her.
What boggles my mind is,
She then said “Yes”,
And were married shortly thereafter.
Crazy pays.

Try other distracting things:
To putting on a favorite movie,
To calling a good friend
(that’s what they are for, silly),
To taking a nice, warm (or ice cold) bath,
To opening a really good book,
To cuddling with the dog or cat,
To saying something funny,
Or preparing something great to eat
Or eating that great something,
Or shopping
(great therapy, just ask the Ladies)
Or best yet:
Totally immersing yourself in
Helping someone else in need.

You get the idea.

You are in charge, in control
In command of the very next moment,
The next hour
The rest of the beautiful day,
A beautiful Life.
You are so singular in your ability
To think,
That you have nothing more
To be responsible for
Than the next thought
About the next moment.

WE cannot think two thoughts
At the same moment,
(Thank you Lord),
So take control of the only thing
You need to control
Or can control.
And keep on controlling.

Remember,
You simply cannot worry
About tomorrow
While you are on a high speed roller coaster,

In a hot air balloon,
Or full of hot air, like me,

Our school has a large number of
Beautiful Dragon Flies.
In twenty years
I have never been bitten by a mosquito at school.
I don’t know of any other place
Where one can make the same claim.

Dragonflies also feed on other insects like flies.
Once hatched, the larva of the Dragonfly
Becomes an aquatic predator,
Feeding on other aquatic insects,
Including mosquito eggs and larvae.
The mosquito is the deadliest
Creature on planet Earth.
They are the deadliest,
because they spread so much disease.
Mosquitoes are responsible
For the deaths of many hundreds of thousands
Of people every year.
Estimates are difficult to come by.

Maintaining a pesticide free environment
Pays huge dividends.
Not only for the safety of our precious children,
But for so many of God’s other
Stunningly beautiful Creations.
And since Humans are
The number two killer on the planet,
I recommend
Hate Free Environments.
Now there’s an idea
Worth thinking about.
But we haven’t thought about that much,
Have we?

if you are installing a bug zapper to fight mosquitoes,
And have a Dragonfly population,
Turn it off.
It zaps the beautiful dragonflies, too.

My precious Rosie shared countless small moments of pure joy with me for 18 years and one month. She still resides deeply embedded in my heart. Life, is a SERIES Of small pleasures. And I cannot count the number she gave to me. Sometimes, the greatest Gifts are very small indeed. God Blesses us in ways we are not always fully aware of.

Is it a delusion to believe
The images in our minds
Are the real world?
Is it unlike
Our experience of it?

The concept that reality is
Only in the mind,
Is found time after time after time
In the study of Philosophy,
And the Sciences remind.

Physicist
Sir Arthur Eddington notable said,
“Matter is mostly ghostly empty space.”
To be more precise,
it is 99.9999999% empty space.

My friends,
We faint and flickering
Shadows and shades
Are almost non-existent.
Matter, of which we are made,
Is coming into and out of existence
Billions of times each second.

Your reality, which includes you,
Is blinking constantly on and off at all times.
Quantum physics has left scientists
All over the world
Baffled,
Especially with the discovery
That our physical material reality,
Isn’t really physical at all. 

Our human brain is designed
By natural experience (in order to survive),
To sense the “on” frequency.
Just as quickly, it blinks “off,”
And everything, including you, disappears.
However, your brain registers and connects only
The “on” segments,
And thus you have the sense
Or feeling of your reality being solid.
What quantum mechanics reveals
Is that there is NO true “physicality” in the universe.

We have discovered in quantum physics
Even subatomic particles
Are far, far from solid.
They are nothing like matter
As we think we know it.
These particles, of which we are made,
Can never be precisely measured.
And they are everywhere,

Religion incorporates transcendent, immanent
Omnipresence.
The Divine is everywhere.
The property of being present everywhere
Defines a universal and fundamental substance,
Which is the source of all existence.
God is omnipresent in a way
That He is able to interact with His
Divine Creations,
With you,
Child of God.

Our physical material reality isn’t really physical at all.

Was a world of ideas

Eternal perfect forms.
Is it?

Particles are,
We are,
Clouds of potential existence,
With no definite location.
Whatever matter is,
It has little,
If any,
Substance.

Our idea of matter
As solid, as substance,
Is a quality appearing
ONLY in our consciousness.
It models what is real,
But is unlike
What is really,
Or, perhaps,
Not really,

Posited that time and space
Are not inherent qualities of the physical world;
They are a reflection
Of the way
Our mind operates.

We are the creators of the world we experience.

And so,
We are NOT passive experiencers of the world;
We are the creators
Of the world we experience.
We, my friends,
Are Children of God,
And firmly at the center of things.
The Earth is not
At the center of the Universe,
But WE are.

Human Thought Determines Reality.

Early in the 1900’s it was proven
Beyond a shadow of a doubt
With an experiment called
The double slit experiment.
They found the determining factor
Of the behavior of energy (particles)

Is the awareness

Proclaims that the whole world
Is within.

We are truly ONE with the Universe, with each other, with God.

The question of God’s existence
Is the most important question
Of human philosophy.
One chooses either a self existent God
Or a self existent universe,
And the universe is not behaving
As if it is self existent.

The universe is running down like a clock,

My Dear Friends,
Religion and science are merging,
Becoming one.
Not as antithetically opposed
As we may believe.
Our discoveries suggests
A far, far more enlightening meaning
To this marriage.

Not just academic,
Not just philosophical,
But personal, practical, meaningful.
And as we think upon these things,
As best we can,
We become Blessed to realize:

“Those who dwell in the beauty
And the mystery of life
Are never lonely.”

The Earth is not at the center of the Universe, but WE are.

In our human affairs
We live our lives
As if the material world
Is the fundamental reality.
And in this consciousness
Lay the root of our discontent,
Our misery,
Our unquenchable thirst.

My friends,
We are losing our humanity,
Not knowing
We are far, far more
Than human.

The human spirit
Is the very essence of life
In a human being.
And knowledge of this can amplify
The joy of living,
And bring about Spiritual freedom.

You are a spiritual being having a human experience.

Your infinite capacity
To create, to love, to dream, to forgive
And to be aware that you are far, far more
Than you can ever imagine,
Ultimately defines what it means to be human.
You are the most beautiful and miraculous Creation
In the Universe.
And you are Eternal.

What is missing,
Disappearing from life,
Is the most exciting, wonderful, exhilarating
Discovery of all:
When we Love someone,
And finally come to know
We are deeply Loved,
God enters our hearts,
And what is dreamed
Becomes forever real.
