 1. Get a General Health Check
“A true diagnosis is half the cure”

In some cases, depressive symptoms can be caused by an illness, vitamin defenciency, drug side effect or withdrawal. Common medical causes include underactive thyroid, heart disease, cancer, certain blood pressure medications and even birth control pills.

By getting to the root cause of your depression, you can figure out the best way to treat it and beat it.

Common Sense Tip: Get a general medical checkup and if you are taking any prescription drugs, investigate if depression is a possible side affect.

 2. Eating Right

Let us not underestimate the power of food to affect mood. Medical studies have linked vitamin deficiencies, such as in Vitamin D and B12, to depression. And that’s just for starters.

Many sufferers of bio-chemical/biological depression may find they also suffer from sugar sensitivities or allergies. In that case, diet can play a vital role in beating depression.

Common Sense Tip: Take notice of how you feel after eating certain foods. Keep a food diary.

 3. Getting Enough Sleep

 A successful psychologist once said that post-partum depression may in fact be another label for sleep deprivation. While it may not be that simple, sleep and depression are closely related.

Lack of sleep has been shown to precipitate psychotic episodes, for example. But does lack of sleep cause depression or does depression cause the inability to sleep? Whatever it is, by getting more sleep, you can start making inroads to improvement.

Common Sense Tip: Go to bed early. If you suffer from insomnia, explore gentle methods of promoting rest like meditation, yoga and massage.

 4. Get your Blood Pumping
Exercise, exercise, exercise.

It took me 3 years after having my youngest child and suffering a bad spout of post-partum depression to make an exercise move. That was the most liberating step I took in all those 3 years, literally. And I saw the results immediately.

Exercise gets your heart rate up, serotonin kicking in and blood sugar cravings, which cause mood swings, down. Oh and I recommend doing it in fresh air with some deep breathing. There’s nothing like nature and some life-energy pulsating through your veins.

Common Sense Tip: Put on your jogging shoes right now and take a walk or run outside. Make a realistic exercise schedule that you can keep up weekly.

 5. The Right Support

Because depression sufferers tend to socially withdraw or hide their true feelings, it can be a bit of a catch twenty two.

Finding the right person to talk to about how you’re really feeling is a great start to fighting those blue feelings. Whether it’s a trusted friend, psychologist or life-coach – a little step in the right direction can do wonders. Getting out the house, when you’re about to sink into another lazy, self affair episode, is another way to beat depression at its own game.

 Common Sense Tip: Even if you don’t feel like it, go out and socialize with your friends on the weekend.

In addition, lycopene concentration increases when it is subjected to higher temperatures. That is why cooked tomatoes are very effective when it comes to stopping cancer growth.

4. DARK CHOCOLATE

For many people this is almost unbelievable. Dark chocolate is an incredibly tasty desert, which also happens to be incredibly healthy to eat, because it is good for you heart condition, your overall happiness, but also for fighting cancer cells.

5. TURMERIC

This plant has various health benefits, and it is well known by the effectiveness in fat reduction, turmeric is also used as a preventive measure against cancer.

The Top Five Pesticide Soaked Fruits and Vegetables

With such a striking level of pesticides on each of these “conventional” produce items, it would be wise to avoid them entirely (even though most people buy them non-organic without second thought):

1. ApplesPerhaps the most notable inclusion on this list is the apple, considering its reputation as a health food, and the lack of organic apple orchards for that matter. The vast majority of apple orchards remain “conventional,” and yet American apples were recently banned in Europe by regulators.

Over 47 pesticide residues were found in conventional apples by the USDA’s pesticide data program in 2010. Doesn’t exactly make for a healthy cup of apple juice now, does it?

 2. CeleryIt may be a negative calorie food but with a total of 64 different pesticide residues found by the PDP in 2008 including 12 different neurotoxins and 10 known carcinogens according to this article from the Center for Food Safety, conventional celery should lose its distinction as a health food. Such chemical cocktails will sabotage your metabolism in the long run, so go organic.

3. StrawberriesPesticides with negative effects on the brain and nervous system have been found in spades on strawberries, with 45 total pesticide residues found by the PDP in 2009.

Organic strawberries are especially pricier but well worth the investment; buy them in season and freeze to save big money.

4. PeachesThe soft skin of peaches combined with the amount of chemicals they’re treated with could spell serious trouble for your health.

A 2008 study by the PDP found 62 different pesticide residues on conventional peaches; several are considered as neurotoxins and/or known carcinogens. While you can wash some of the residue off much of it remains in the soft flesh and skin of the peach.

5. GrapesThe fourth and final fruit on the list, grapes have been found with 56 different pesticide residues as of 2010, including four developmental or reproductive toxins linked to fertility problems and even miscarriages.

That means that wine drinkers should be especially careful not overdo it, especially in its non-organic form.
