Fortifying Your Memory With Supplements

As we age, we all want to avoid memory loss.
Can supplements like ginkgo and ginseng help?

From the WebMD Archives

Memory loss worries many of us as we get older. You might wonder whether you’ll become one of the 10 million baby boomers who develops Alzheimer’s disease. Or, maybe you’re simply seeking ways to fortify your memory with memory supplements, memory vitamins, or memory games. Will these brain boosters really help our memory? WebMD talked with the experts to find out whether – and which – memory enhancers really work.(Note: if you suspect you or someone you love may have Alzheimer’s, it’s important to seek medical advice.)

The Need for Memory Enhancers

Finding new ways to slow memory loss could produce astounding results. For example, if the onset of Alzheimer’s could be delayed in today’s population by an average of just one year, there would be about 210,000 fewer people with Alzheimer’s 10 years from now. And that would produce a cost savings of $10 billion.

“The problem with prescription drugs is that they’re extremely expensive and often have limited effectiveness during a short window of time,” says Evangeline Lausier, MD, assistant clinical professor in medicine, Duke Integrative Medicine, Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Memory Supplements With Potential

Although there are a variety of “brain boosters” on the market – many chockfull of multiple substances – most are lacking research to support their memory-enhancing claims.

Ginkgo biloba is one that shows more promise than many others and is commonly used in Europe for a type of dementia resulting from reduced blood flow, Lausier says. “Ginkgo biloba tends to improve blood flow in small vessels.”

“A couple of meta-analyses and systematic reviews show that ginkgo biloba is helpful for dementia in about the same range as drugs being pushed very heavily to treat Alzheimer’s,” says Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, an associate professor in the complementary and alternative medicine Master’s program of the department of physiology and biophysics at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Unfortunately, that’s not all that successful, she adds. Ginkgo doesn’t seem to help prevent dementia. But in people who already have dementia, it may either improve symptoms or stabilize symptoms so that they don’t get worse. In addition, some but not all studies show benefits in mood, alertness, and mental ability in healthy people who take ginkgo. More research needs to be done to be certain about these effects.

Here are a few other memory supplements that may also have some potential, but require much more study:

  • Omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fish oil supplements have piqued great interest. Studies suggest that a higher intake of omega-3 fatty acid from foods such as cold-water fish, plant and nut oils, and English walnuts are strongly linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s. However, thorough studies comparing omega-3s to placebo are needed to prove this memory benefit from supplements.
  • Huperzine A. Also known as Chinese club moss, this natural medicine works in a similar way as Alzheimer’s drugs. But more evidence is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness.
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine. Some studies suggest that this amino acid might help Alzheimer’s patients with memory problems. It may provide a greater benefit to people with early onset and a fast rate of the disease.
  • Vitamin E. Although vitamin E apparently doesn’t decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, it may slow its progression. Recent studies have raised concerns about an increased risk of deaths in unhealthy people who take high doses of vitamin E, so be sure to consult with your doctor before taking this supplement.
  • Asian (or Panax) ginseng. An herb that’s sometimes used with ginkgo biloba, Asian ginseng may help with fatigue and quality of life, Fugh-Berman tells WebMD. But any benefit for memory, she says, has shown up mostly in a small group or subset of study participants.

Ginkgo Biloba for Memory Loss? With Caution

One of the top-selling herbs in the United States, ginkgo biloba has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine.

A National Institute on Aging (NIH) ginkgo trial of more than 200 healthy adults older than 60 showed no improvement in memory or concentration. It is possible that doses higher than the 120 milligrams used daily in this six-week trial could be effective. Look for results of current large, long-term trials, such as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine‘s study with 3,000 volunteers. These will help to confirm whether or not ginkgo biloba can help prevent dementia or enhance memory in healthy people.

Some research suggests that ginkgo biloba is effective for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo biloba may be as effective as acetylcholinesterase inhibitor drugs such as donepezil (Aricept). Studies have also indicated that ginkgo biloba may be helpful for cerebral insufficiency, a decreased flow of blood to the brain from clogged blood vessels.

However, a 2009 study in The Journal of the American Medical Association showed that compared with placebo, 120 mg twice daily of ginkgo biloba did not result in less cognitive decline in older adults with normal or only mild thinking impairment.

Ginkgo biloba is available in tablets, capsules, teas, and fortified foods. Do not use ginkgo biloba seeds, which can be very toxic. Tea bags often contain 30 milligrams of ginkgo biloba extract, while a typical dose used in ginkgo biloba studies is 80 to 240 milligrams of a standardized extract daily by mouth in two to three divided doses.

Although ginkgo biloba is generally safe, you should be aware of its blood-thinning properties. Stop using ginkgo biloba or use caution before surgery or dental procedures. Your risk for bleeding is also greater if you are taking blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin. Also, it is possible that ginkgo biloba affects insulin or blood sugar. So be cautious if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia, or if you take substances that affect blood sugar.

Minor side effects of ginkgo biloba may include headache, nausea, or intestinal problems.

Memory Enhancers That May Be Unsafe

Before adding any memory supplements to your diet, have a pharmacist check for potential interactions with any drugs or supplements you’re taking, advises Lausier.

“And, remember that ‘natural’ isn’t always safe,” she says. “When you think about nature, you often think of beautiful and harmless. But think about a lion and a wildebeest – that’s nature, too.”

  • Bacopa. Used for millennia in India, bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb that shows some promise for memory problems, says Lausier. But it is an example of a memory supplement that carries a higher risk of drug interactions. For this reason, she doesn’t recommend using it until further study is conducted.
  • DHEA. A hormone that declines with age, DHEA has garnered lots of interest. Taken long-term or in high doses, however, it may increase the risk for certain types of cancer, as well as other serious side effects.

As you evaluate other potential memory supplements, keep in mind that the FDA does not strictly regulate herbs and supplements. It treats them like foods rather than medications. Unlike drug manufacturers, the makers of supplements don’t have to show their products are safe or effective before selling them on the market.

This makes it harder for you to assess their strength, purity, and safety. Fugh-Berman advises doing your own research on effectiveness and adverse effects, using reliable, unbiased sources.

Changing Your Lifestyle, Enhancing Your Memory

While there is no specific diet to prevent Alzheimer’s, studies have shown that a healthy diet may help lower the risk. Research has shown that the Mediterranean diet may lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, and may even help prolong life in people with Alzheimer’s. The Mediterranean diet has very little red meat. The diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, and nuts, with moderate amounts of dairy, fish, and poultry. Olive oil is an important source of healthy fats.

Researchers speculate that there may be a small protective quality of caffeine from the risk of dementia. But more research needs to be done in this area. In the meantime, Lausier recommends the “common sense” steps for enhancing your memory, such as not smoking and avoiding too much caffeine or alcohol. “Some of these changes may make more difference in the outcome than a lot of expensive drugs or supplements.”

Challenging your brain to learn new things is another important way to prevent memory loss, she says. It might involve learning a foreign language, an instrument, or a computer program, for example. “It doesn’t matter if you’re successful,” she says. “Just the act of trying turns on parts of your brain that are getting cobwebs.” Exercise apparently also can help enhance memory in a variety of ways. For example, it generates blood flow and formation of nerve cells in a portion of the brain called the dentate gyrus. And, it reduces other risk factors, such as cardiovascular disease, indirectly enhancing brain health. One recent study underscored that it’s never too late to reap the memory benefits of exercise. A trial of 152 adults with mild cognitive impairment, aged 70 to 80, compared the cognitive benefits of B vitamins with aerobic exercise. After one year, the walkers fared better with memory tests.

 Human Heart Is Very Fragile
– by Aftab Alam

What
Humanity?

It’s the Angelic clad.
Slowly we are removing it,
to be glad.
In the green forest I’ve seen the white,
Darkening days
and nights so bright.

What Peace?

‘Tis for Love and Charity,
Resides within, away from the vanity
That kills poverty and builds Humanity.
Come; adore Peace
to cure its infirmity?

Peace is neither sulky nor bulky,
but agile.
Human Heart that we have
is very
fragile.

Magnesium: The cure to all disease?

Some consumers take products for which there is no medical indication at all – it’s intended as “primary prevention” of a medical condition they believe they can avoid through supplement use. Afraid of macular degeneration? Take lutein. Or worried about Alzheimer’s? Grab some ginkgo biloba. No matter your anxiety, there’s a supplement marketed for you.

One supplement with enduring popularity is magnesium.  It cures cancer. And depression. Throw away your inhalers, because it cures asthma too. Read enough online, and you’ll conclude that magnesium is quite possibly the prevention and the cure to all disease.

Does magnesium have medicinal effects when consumed?

In medical and pharmacy practice, it has several demonstrated uses – the most well known are probably as an antacid or laxative. Good old milk of magnesia (MOM) works because magnesium is partially absorbed – enough stays in the bowel, drawing water into the colon and softening and dislodging anything below.  Injectable magnesium, sold as a prescription drug,  allows large doses to be given quickly, and is used for the treatment of preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced hypertension) and eclampsia (the resulting seizures) – it’s well tolerated and better than other drugs.  Magnesium also seems to be effective for treating some forms of arrhythmia, as well as asthma exacerbations. Some types of migrane and cluster headaches also seem to respond to magnesium supplements.

Magnesium really is everywhere in the body – it’s the 4th most abundant mineral. It’s involved in hundreds of different biochemical reactions and enzyme systems, supporting processes like protein synthesis, cell growth, and energy production. It has roles in nerve function, muscle control, and blood pressure. Even blood sugar regulation depends on magnesium.

Boosting magnesium intake through dietary changes.

Helpfully, foods rich in magnesium are already recommended in diets associated with positive health outcomes: Green vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds are all good sources of magnesium.

Brain cancer incidence, cellphone use, and trends data

Electromagnetic Radiation Safety
by Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D.

Hardell and Carlberg (2015) reported that brain tumor rates have been increasing in Sweden based upon the Swedish National Inpatient Registry data.  Hardell and Carlberg (2017) reported that brain tumors of unknown type increased from 2007-2015, especially in the age group 20-39 years of age. According to the authors, “This may be explained by higher risk for brain tumor in subjects with first use of a wireless phone before the age of 20 years taking a reasonable latency period.”

Why is Coffee Good For You?
Here Are 7 Reasons
By Kris Gunnars, BSc
To read full article click here

In recent years and decades,
scientists have studied the effects of coffee
on various aspects of health
and their results have been nothing short of amazing.
Here are 7 reasons why coffee
may actually be one of the
healthiest
beverages on the planet.

1. Coffee Can Make You Smarter

The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine, which is a stimulant and the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Caffeine’s primary mechanism in the brain is blocking the effects of an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine.
By blocking the inhibitory effects of Adenosine,
caffeine actually increases neuronal firing in the brain
and the release of other neurotransmitters
like dopamine and norepinephrine.

Many controlled trials have examined
the effects of caffeine on the brain,
demonstrating that caffeine can improve mood, reaction time,
memory, vigilance and general cognitive function.

2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat
and Improves Physical Performance

There’s a good reason why you will find caffeine
in most commercial fat burning supplements.

Caffeine raises metabolism
and increases the oxidation of fatty acids.

3. Coffee May Drastically Lower
Your Risk of Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a lifestyle-related disease
that has reached epidemic proportions,
having increased 10-fold in a few decades
and now afflicting about 300 million people.

In observational studies,
coffee has been repeatedly associated with a
lower risk of diabetes.
The reduction in risk ranges from 23%
all the way up to 67%.

A massive review article looked at 18 studies
with a total of 457,922 participants.
Each additional cup of coffee per day
lowered the risk of diabetes by 7%.
The more coffee people drank,
the lower their risk.

4. Coffee May Lower Your Risk
of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term,
it may also protect your brain in old age.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common
neurodegenerative disorder in the world
and a leading cause of dementia.

In prospective studies,
coffee drinkers have up to a
60% lower risk
of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Parkinson’s
is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder,
characterized by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain.
Coffee may lower the risk of Parkinson’s by 32-60%.

5. Coffee May be Extremely Good
For Your Liver

The liver is a remarkable organ
that carries out hundreds of vital functions in the body.

It is very vulnerable to modern insults
such as excess consumption of alcohol and fructose.
Cirrhosis is the end stage of liver damage
caused by diseases like alcoholism and hepatitis,
where liver tissue has been largely replaced by scar tissue.

Multiple studies have shown
that coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis
by as much as 80%,
the strongest effect for those
who drank 4 or more cups per day.

Coffee may also lower the risk of
liver cancer
by around 40%.

6. Coffee May Decrease
Your Risk of Dying

In two very large prospective epidemiological studies,
drinking coffee was associated with
a lower risk of death by all causes.

This effect is particularly profound in type II diabetics,
one study showing that coffee drinkers
had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year period.

7. Coffee is Loaded
With Nutrients and Antioxidants

Many of the nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink, which actually contains a decent amount of vitamins and minerals.

ONE cup of coffee contains:

6% of the RDA for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5).
11% of the RDA for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2).
2% of the RDA for Niacin (B3) and Thiamine (B1).
3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.

May not seem like much,
but if you drink several cups of coffee per day
then this quickly adds up.

But this isn’t all.
Coffee also contains a massive amount of
antioxidants.

In fact,
coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants
in the western diet,
outranking both fruits and vegetables combined.

Even though coffee in moderate amounts is good for you,
drinking way too much of it can still be harmful.

To make sure to preserve the health benefits,
don’t put sugar
or anything nasty in your coffee!
If it tends to affect your sleep,
then don’t drink it after 2 p.m.

If anything, coffee may literally be
the healthiest beverage
on the planet.

And so, My Friends,
instead of allowing your children
to drink deadly and addictive soft drinks,
why not introduce them to something healthy?
Yes,
like coffee.

Meeting Gen. Robert Scott / Coffee Reduces Risk Of Death / Half-Price Books & Shakespeare

Gen. Scott

BRIGADIER GENERAL ROBERT L. SCOTT JR.

Our students are constantly wanting to hear more stories. So please allow me to share one more.

I have been truly Blessed with many opportunities and adventures. One was as the creator and host of a radio talk show, “On the Line”, simulcast over radio stations including KBLE, and KACC and originating in the studios of KFMN-FM in Abilene. It was in broadcasting that I worked my way through most of my time in college. And I was privileged to interview many outstanding personalities and legendary citizens.

Dr. A at KFMN-FM

     Dr. A at KFMN-FM

One of the truly memorable guests on my talk show was BRIGADIER GENERAL ROBERT L. SCOTT JR. He was introduced to me by a dear friend, Dr. Irby Fox, a wonderful physician and former Professor of Physics at Hardin-Simmons University and another true Patriot, who, in 1942 entered the U. S. Navy and served in the Pacific theater during WWII on board the aircraft carriers USS Nehenta Bay and USS Cabot. read more

Hells Angels, Flying Tigers 1942 by R. T. Smith
Notice airman riding on wing!

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, General Robert Scott was considered too old for combat. But in March of 1942, he volunteered for a secret mission to fly the B-17 bomber in China and met Gen. Claire Chennault, the legendary commander of the Flying Tigers, the first American Volunteer Group of the Chinese Air Force (1941–1942) recruited under presidential authority. read more

In July 1942, at the request of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek, Scott was named commander of the 23rd Fighter Group, newly formed by General Claire Chennault when the Flying Tigers were incorporated into the USAAF.

The Flying Tigers

      The Flying Tigers

And, he also became fighter commanding officer of the China Air Task Force. He flew an unbelievable 388 combat missions to October 1943, shooting down 13 enemy aircraft to become one of the earliest aces of the war. Interestingly, during this period, he frequently repainted the propeller spinner in different colors to create the illusion of a much larger fighter force in the area than a single aircraft, becoming in effect a “one-man air force” and he flew at least one high altitude mission over Mount Everest.

Following the war, Scott continued to lead fighter units in the United States and overseas. He commanded the nation’s first jet fighter school at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., before his promotion to general officer and becoming the Director of Information for the Air Force.

General Scott wrote several books including God Is My Copilot, a beautifully written account of his wartime exploits. The book was later made into a 1945 feature-length movie. I highly recommend you purchase this dynamic story and rent or purchase the movie. read more

Gen Claire Chennault

General Claire Chennault

Needless to say, the longer I interviewed General Scott, the more I came to admire him. And he shared many stories with me. One I wish to share with you.

He told me he was second in command of the Flying Tigers under Gen. Claire Chennault. And one day he reported to the General that a large roll of wire disappeared and he wanted it back. It was needed for small jobs around the base. But the General told Col. Scott to just forget it. He said that Chinese values were such that it should not be addressed. And that was an order.

Scott said, in his interview with me, that he decided to take matters into his own hands, so he reported the loss to General Chiang Kai-Shek. The General looked embarrassed and humbly apologized. He left Scott with his head bowed down in shame. Scott said that later he really thought nothing of it. He just wanted the wire back and he wanted the pilfering to stop. To him it was not a big deal.

Very early the next morning, General Chennault entered his tent, literally kicked him off of his bed and shouted, “Get Up! Did you disobey my order? Did you report the loss of that wire? Did you? Well, Get Up! Don’t get dressed! Just follow me!”

The famous Flying Tigers

The famous Flying Tigers

Scott hurriedly scurried behind the General and closely followed him up a steep incline to the top of a small hill. When they got to the top General Chennault pointed down the other side of the incline and with a sweeping motion of his hand shouted out, “Was the wire about that long?”

To Scott’s horror, there were dead Chinese soldiers, laid end to end, about the length of the wire. They had been executed. It was the General’s way of making amends, of apologizing. It was Chinese justice.

It was then that Scott remembered that General Chennault told him to just “forget it”, that Chinese values were such that it should not be addressed. And most importantly, that it was an order. Scott told me, in a whispered voice, that he never disobeyed another order and that he lived with the result of his disobedience in his nightmarish dreams ever since.

Yes, values are different within different cultures. And it is one of our great Blessings that we live in truly compassionate society, in America, where human life is highly valued. And we should not forget it. And we should be grateful.

Many lives have been given for our precious American values and our way of life. Not only on fields of battle, but at home, with wives and children and the loved ones of so many left at home to bear their burdens alone so that someone could fight for you and for me. They too have suffered and sacrificed.

No, our Freedom is not free. It is the most expensive thing on the planet. And the price was paid by hundreds of thousands of brave Americans for you and for me.

Scott in 1994 standing next to an oil painting of himself at the Museum of Aviation in Georgia.

Which is why it is so abhorrent to me to hear that we are not adequately providing for the medical and other needs of our Veterans. Why do we keep electing people who cannot do the job of caring for those who cared so much for us, who sacrificed their lives for us and whose families also suffered – for you and me? Why? What a humiliating embarrassment to know we have grossly neglected our courageous Veterans.

Ultimately my friends, it is we, the people, the citizens, the ones who vote, who are responsible. Us! Yes, the very least we can do, is to turn off the television and go vote. And then choose wisely.

Our values have apparently not been well represented (by the way, the approval rating for Congress was 13% last year!). Let’s stop sending so much of our money overseas and spend it here, in our country, on those who have earned it! Yes, we can afford it. What we cannot afford is neglect and abuse of those who defend Liberty. We can, and should, take care of our wonderful Veterans. We are the wealthiest Nation on earth. And we are financially foolish and careless and sinful.

The next time you see a Service man or woman or Veteran or family member of one, do as one of our thoughtful students, who I am always proud of, Alden Collins, has been frequently known to do – reach out and shake their hand and thank them.

You owe them your life.

coffee chartWhy is Coffee Good For You?
Here Are 7 Reasons
By Kris Gunnars
To read full article click here

In recent years and decades, scientists have studied the effects of coffee on various aspects of health and their results have been nothing short of amazing. Here are 7 reasons why coffee may actually be one of the healthiest beverages on the planet.

By blocking the inhibitory effects of Adenosine, caffeine actually increases neuronal firing in the brain and the release of other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.

Many controlled trials have examined the effects of caffeine on the brain, demonstrating that caffeine can improve mood, reaction time, memory, vigilance and general cognitive function.

2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat and Improves Physical Performance

There’s a good reason why you will find caffeine in most commercial fat burning supplements.

Caffeine raises metabolism and increases the oxidation of fatty acids.

3. Coffee May Drastically Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a lifestyle-related disease that has reached epidemic proportions, having increased 10-fold in a few decades and now afflicting about 300 million people.

In observational studies, coffee has been repeatedly associated with a lower risk of diabetes. The reduction in risk ranges from 23% all the way up to 67%.

A massive review article looked at 18 studies with a total of 457.922 participants. Each additional cup of coffee per day lowered the risk of diabetes by 7%. The more coffee people drank, the lower their risk.

4. Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world and a leading cause of dementia.

In prospective studies, coffee drinkers have up to a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain. Coffee may lower the risk of Parkinson’s by 32-60%.

5. Coffee May be Extremely Good For Your Liver

The liver is a remarkable organ that carries out hundreds of vital functions in the body.

It is very vulnerable to modern insults such as excess consumption of alcohol and fructose. Cirrhosis is the end stage of liver damage caused by diseases like alcoholism and hepatitis, where liver tissue has been largely replaced by scar tissue.

Multiple studies have shown that coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis by as much as 80%, the strongest effect for those who drank 4 or more cups per day.

Coffee may also lower the risk of liver cancer by around 40%.

6. Coffee May Decrease Your Risk of Dying

In two very large prospective epidemiological studies, drinking coffee was associated with a lower risk of death by all causes.

This effect is particularly profound in type II diabetics, one study showing that coffee drinkers had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year period.

7. Coffee is Loaded With Nutrients and Antioxidants

Many of the nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink, which actually contains a decent amount of vitamins and minerals.

A cup of coffee contains:

6% of the RDA for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5).
11% of the RDA for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2).
2% of the RDA for Niacin (B3) and Thiamine (B1).
3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.

May not seem like much, but if you drink several cups of coffee per day then this quickly adds up.

But this isn’t all. Coffee also contains a massive amount of antioxidants.

In fact, coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the western diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables combined.

Even though coffee in moderate amounts is good for you, drinking way too much of it can still be harmful.

To make sure to preserve the health benefits, don’t put sugar or anything nasty in your coffee! If it tends to affect your sleep, then don’t drink it after 2 p.m.

If anything, coffee may literally be the healthiest beverage on the planet.

And so, my friends, instead of allowing your children to drink deadly and addictive soft drinks, why not introduce them to something healthy? Yes, like coffee.

We can see with our eyes.
But close your eyes,
And look into the real light of this life,
Into the Light of your heart,
Into that which transcends
What has been illumined,
Into what will be.

Close your eyes.
Listen to the song
Long laid to rest,
Seldom sung,
But as a child.
The one you heard –
So long ago,
The one you were –
And, so long to hear again.

It is the song of your heart,
Beating in time
With all that has gone before,
With all it longed to be.

You shall never see
As clearly as today.
The lens of your heart
Can focus your mind
Upon the things in life
That truly have meaning,
That matter.

Sunset 2

The glow of your being,
The essence of your existence,
Lies deeply embedded
Within the Love you feel
For someone else.

Within the few and precious moments
You share with another,
Lies a Gift greater
Than any treasure on this earth,
A Gift only you can give,
A Gift so alive with Love,
That it will live forever –
The Gift of knowing, surely knowing,
That someone is alive in your heart,
And will live there
Forever.

Such Love never dies.
Such Love has always lived,
Placed in your heart
By the precious Love of God,
This Love comes through you,
Not from you.

It is the only Gift
Worthy of bestowing,
Worthy of receipt.

It is yours,
If discovered,
Treasured,
Shared.

Your heart is not yours.
It belongs to another,
And always has.
Time is measured
By its humble beat –
The pulsing of its radiance
You will never feel,
For the vibrancy of its being
Always takes flight,
Seeking shelter
In the dark corner of another life,
To light the pathway,
To see.

You are,
By the Grace of God,
This Light
.
May the Light of your precious Life
Bring someone out of darkness,
And into the warm, bright, joyful
Sunlight of Salvation –
Your Salvation,
And the precious one you save.

6 common household items that cause cancer
from: naturalnews.com

Air fresheners –  A hotbed of poisonous substances that could leave you and your loved ones infertile, brain-damaged or chronically ill. Tests conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council found that most air fresheners contain phthalates, which among other things interfere with male hormone production.

Most air fresheners are also loaded with other cancer-causing volatile organic compounds as well, which interfere with reproduction, respiration and cellular regeneration. A 2008 study conducted by Anne Steinemann at the University of Washington found that all air fresheners tested emitted chemicals known to be carcinogenic, meaning they cause cancer.

Instead of toxic commercial air fresheners, stick with all-natural essential oils, which can be applied to the skin or released into the air from a diffuser. read more

Candles  The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found that nearly half of all scented candles on the market contain lead wiring in their wicks, which is released into the air upon burning. This lead leads to hormone disruption, behavioral disorders and other health problems.

Director George Rodriguez interviews students for roles in our coming Shakespeare production.

Director George Rodriguez interviews Jack for a role in our upcoming Shakespeare production.

Many candles are also made of paraffin wax which, when burned, generates two highly toxic compounds, benzene and toluene, both of which are carcinogenic. Artificial fragrances and dyes are also present in many scented candles, which when burned end up in your lungs.

Art supplies –  Epoxy materials, glues, acrylic paints and solvents, drawing utensils and other supplies used to create art contain chemicals linked to allergies, organ damage and cancer.

The federal Labeling Hazardous Art Materials Act requires that all art supplies sold in the U.S. bear warnings. It is recommended that users of such supplies purchase only products that are certified by the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI). ACMI-certified products undergo rigorous evaluations by independent toxicologists to make sure that they are safe for everyone, including small children.

Shampoos & Conditioners – Toxins are in cosmetics containing ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate that generate cancer-causing byproducts when used. Other carcinogenic additives commonly used in hair care products include polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cocamide DEA.

Safe Cosmetics has put together a list of the safest and most eco-friendly shampoos on the market, which are free of most or all of the chemicals listed in its “Skin Deep” database, which you can access here: SafeCosmetics.org.

Antiperspirant Deodorants –  Avoid aluminum chlorohydrate, which can absorb directly into the skin and promote the formation of breast cancer. Aluminum from antiperspirants is also believed to contribute to brain diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Other toxic additives in deodorants include parabens, artificial preservatives that mimic estrogen in the body and promotes the growth of cancer cells. Parabens are also linked to gastrointestinal damage, nausea and central nervous system depression.

Shower curtains – Plastic shower curtains act something like a radiator for toxic chemical release. Many shower curtains off-gas harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds that are known to damage the respiratory tract, central nervous system, liver and kidneys.

Mary Alice

Augustus Caesar keeps a watchful eye over Mary Alice (she earlier beheaded him!)

If your shower curtain has that unique “new shower curtain smell,” it is releasing deadly chemicals — potentially upwards of 108 different VOCs, that are harming you. It is important to buy only non-toxic, PVC-free shower curtains made without harmful chemicals.

Some of the best options include shower curtains made from hemp, linen, birch, organic cotton or PEVA, which you can learn more about here:

MPs in the U.K say yes to Three-Person Babies
from click here

MPs have voted in favor of the creation of babies with DNA from two women and one man. The UK is now set to become the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies from three people. The technique stops genetic diseases being passed from mother to child. This change that will be passed down through the generations. It also asks questions about the future. Some people argue we are now on a slippery slope to further genetic modification of children.

A further vote is required in the House of Lords. It everything goes ahead then the first such baby could be born next year. Critics say they will continue to fight against the technique that raises too many ethical and safety concerns.
