Fortifying Your Memory With Supplements

As we age, we all want to avoid memory loss.
Can supplements like ginkgo and ginseng help?

Memory loss worries many of us as we get older. You might wonder whether you’ll become one of the 10 million baby boomers who develops Alzheimer’s disease. Or, maybe you’re simply seeking ways to fortify your memory with memory supplements, memory vitamins, or memory games.Will these brain boosters really help our memory? WebMD talked with the experts to find out whether – and which – memory enhancers really work.(Note: if you suspect you or someone you love may have Alzheimer’s, it’s important to seek medical advice.)

The Need for Memory Enhancers

Finding new ways to slow memory loss could produce astounding results. For example, if the onset of Alzheimer’s could be delayed in today’s population by an average of just one year, there would be about 210,000 fewer people with Alzheimer’s 10 years from now. And that would produce a cost savings of $10 billion.

“The problem with prescription drugs is that they’re extremely expensive and often have limited effectiveness during a short window of time,” says Evangeline Lausier, MD, assistant clinical professor in medicine, Duke Integrative Medicine, Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Memory Supplements With Potential

Although there are a variety of “brain boosters” on the market – many chockfull of multiple substances – most are lacking research to support their memory-enhancing claims.

Ginkgo biloba is one that shows more promise than many others and is commonly used in Europe for a type of dementia resulting from reduced blood flow, Lausier says. “Ginkgo biloba tends to improve blood flow in small vessels.”

“A couple of meta-analyses and systematic reviews show that ginkgo biloba is helpful for dementia in about the same range as drugs being pushed very heavily to treat Alzheimer’s,” says Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, an associate professor in the complementary and alternative medicine Master’s program of the department of physiology and biophysics at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Unfortunately, that’s not all that successful, she adds. Ginkgo doesn’t seem to help prevent dementia. But in people who already have dementia, it may either improve symptoms or stabilize symptoms so that they don’t get worse. In addition, some but not all studies show benefits in mood, alertness, and mental ability in healthy people who take ginkgo. More research needs to be done to be certain about these effects.

Here are a few other memory supplements that may also have some potential, but require much more study:

  • Omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fish oil supplements have piqued great interest. Studies suggest that a higher intake of omega-3 fatty acid from foods such as cold-water fish, plant and nut oils, and English walnuts are strongly linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s. However, thorough studies comparing omega-3s to placebo are needed to prove this memory benefit from supplements.
  • Huperzine A. Also known as Chinese club moss, this natural medicine works in a similar way as Alzheimer’s drugs. But more evidence is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness.
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine. Some studies suggest that this amino acid might help Alzheimer’s patients with memory problems. It may provide a greater benefit to people with early onset and a fast rate of the disease.
  • Vitamin E. Although vitamin E apparently doesn’t decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, it may slow its progression. Recent studies have raised concerns about an increased risk of deaths in unhealthy people who take high doses of vitamin E, so be sure to consult with your doctor before taking this supplement.
  • Asian (or Panax) ginseng. An herb that’s sometimes used with ginkgo biloba, Asian ginseng may help with fatigue and quality of life, Fugh-Berman tells WebMD. But any benefit for memory, she says, has shown up mostly in a small group or subset of study participants.

Ginkgo Biloba for Memory Loss? With Caution

One of the top-selling herbs in the United States, ginkgo biloba has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine.

A National Institute on Aging (NIH) ginkgo trial of more than 200 healthy adults older than 60 showed no improvement in memory or concentration. It is possible that doses higher than the 120 milligrams used daily in this six-week trial could be effective. Look for results of current large, long-term trials, such as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine‘s study with 3,000 volunteers. These will help to confirm whether or not ginkgo biloba can help prevent dementia or enhance memory in healthy people.

Some research suggests that ginkgo biloba is effective for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo biloba may be as effective as acetylcholinesterase inhibitor drugs such as donepezil (Aricept). Studies have also indicated that ginkgo biloba may be helpful for cerebral insufficiency, a decreased flow of blood to the brain from clogged blood vessels.

However, a 2009 study in The Journal of the American Medical Association showed that compared with placebo, 120 mg twice daily of ginkgo biloba did not result in less cognitive decline in older adults with normal or only mild thinking impairment.

Ginkgo biloba is available in tablets, capsules, teas, and fortified foods. Do not use ginkgo biloba seeds, which can be very toxic. Tea bags often contain 30 milligrams of ginkgo biloba extract, while a typical dose used in ginkgo biloba studies is 80 to 240 milligrams of a standardized extract daily by mouth in two to three divided doses.

Although ginkgo biloba is generally safe, you should be aware of its blood-thinning properties. Stop using ginkgo biloba or use caution before surgery or dental procedures. Your risk for bleeding is also greater if you are taking blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin. Also, it is possible that ginkgo biloba affects insulin or blood sugar. So be cautious if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia, or if you take substances that affect blood sugar.

Minor side effects of ginkgo biloba may include headache, nausea, or intestinal problems.

Memory Enhancers That May Be Unsafe

Before adding any memory supplements to your diet, have a pharmacist check for potential interactions with any drugs or supplements you’re taking, advises Lausier.

“And, remember that ‘natural’ isn’t always safe,” she says. “When you think about nature, you often think of beautiful and harmless. But think about a lion and a wildebeest – that’s nature, too.”

  • Bacopa. Used for millennia in India, bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb that shows some promise for memory problems, says Lausier. But it is an example of a memory supplement that carries a higher risk of drug interactions. For this reason, she doesn’t recommend using it until further study is conducted.
  • DHEA. A hormone that declines with age, DHEA has garnered lots of interest. Taken long-term or in high doses, however, it may increase the risk for certain types of cancer, as well as other serious side effects.

As you evaluate other potential memory supplements, keep in mind that the FDA does not strictly regulate herbs and supplements. It treats them like foods rather than medications. Unlike drug manufacturers, the makers of supplements don’t have to show their products are safe or effective before selling them on the market.

This makes it harder for you to assess their strength, purity, and safety. Fugh-Berman advises doing your own research on effectiveness and adverse effects, using reliable, unbiased sources.

Changing Your Lifestyle, Enhancing Your Memory

While there is no specific diet to prevent Alzheimer’s, studies have shown that a healthy diet may help lower the risk. Research has shown that the Mediterranean diet may lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, and may even help prolong life in people with Alzheimer’s. The Mediterranean diet has very little red meat. The diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, and nuts, with moderate amounts of dairy, fish, and poultry. Olive oil is an important source of healthy fats.

Researchers speculate that there may be a small protective quality of caffeine from the risk of dementia. But more research needs to be done in this area. In the meantime, Lausier recommends the “common sense” steps for enhancing your memory, such as not smoking and avoiding too much caffeine or alcohol. “Some of these changes may make more difference in the outcome than a lot of expensive drugs or supplements.”

Challenging your brain to learn new things is another important way to prevent memory loss, she says. It might involve learning a foreign language, an instrument, or a computer program, for example. “It doesn’t matter if you’re successful,” she says. “Just the act of trying turns on parts of your brain that are getting cobwebs.” Exercise apparently also can help enhance memory in a variety of ways. For example, it generates blood flow and formation of nerve cells in a portion of the brain called the dentate gyrus. And, it reduces other risk factors, such as cardiovascular disease, indirectly enhancing brain health.One recent study underscored that it’s never too late to reap the memory benefits of exercise. A trial of 152 adults with mild cognitive impairment, aged 70 to 80, compared the cognitive benefits of B vitamins with aerobic exercise. After one year, the walkers fared better with memory tests.

This illusion
of our individual selves,

we hold in common

and we are all part of
One
Divine Intelligence.

Matter,
within the illusory building blocks
of our perceivable existence,
is molded by thoughtful intent.

our thought processes
have become so linear

Lithium in water may cut dementia

On a personal note:
How well I remember meeting a Lady
in Mineral Wells, Texas in 1964.
She told me she was 100 years old.
But she looked to me to be in her 60’s! 
She showed me her driver’s license
and she really was 100 years old.

I could not believe it!

Later, I asked her what the secret was
to her longevity and youthful looks.
She whispered in my ear, “Crazy Water”.
No, I did not comprehend what she was saying.
But she got in her car
and headed for the Crazy Water Hotel
with her empty water bottles.
Wow!

People with higher levels of lithium in their drinking water appear to have a lower risk of developing dementia, say researchers in Denmark.

Lithium is naturally found in tap water, although the amount varies.

The findings, based on a study of 800,000 people, are not clear-cut. The highest levels cut risk, but moderate levels were worse than low ones.

Experts said it was an intriguing and encouraging study that hinted at a way of preventing the disease.

The study, at the University of Copenhagen, looked at the medical records of 73,731 Danish people with dementia and 733,653 without the disease.

Those drinking water with the highest lithium levels (above 15 micrograms per litre) had a 17% reduction in risk.

The researchers said: “This is the first study, to our knowledge, to investigate the association between lithium in drinking water and the incidence of dementia.

“Higher long-term lithium exposure from drinking water may be associated with a lower incidence of dementia.”

Brain-altering

Lithium is known to have an effect on the brain and is used as a treatment in bipolar disorder.

However, the lithium in tap water is at much lower levels than is used medicinally.

Experiments have shown the element alters a wide range of biological processes in the brain.

This broad impact could explain the mixed pattern thrown up by the different doses, as only certain dosing sweet-spots change brain activity in a beneficial way.

Prof Simon Lovestone, from the department of psychiatry at the University of Oxford, said: “This is a really intriguing study.

“In neurons in a dish and in mouse and fruit-fly models of Alzheimer’s disease, lithium has been shown to be protective.

“Not only that, but lithium is used to treat people with bipolar disorder and some studies have suggested that people on lithium for this reason, often for life, might also be protected from Alzheimer’s.”

No therapy

At the moment, there is no drug that can stop, reverse or even slow the progression of the disease.

Dr David Reynolds, from the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “It is potentially exciting that low doses of a drug already available in the clinic could help limit the number of people who develop dementia.

“[Our analysis] suggests that a treatment that could delay dementia by just five years would mean that 666,000 fewer people develop dementia by 2050 [in the UK].”

Prof. Tara Spires-Jones, from the Center for Discovery Brain Sciences, at the University of Edinburgh, said: “This association does not necessarily mean that the lithium itself reduces dementia risk.

“There could be other environmental factors in the area that could be influencing dementia risk.

“Nonetheless, this is an interesting result that will prompt more research into whether lithium levels in the diet or drinking water may modify risk of dementia.”

Suicide in the United States
has surged to the
HIGHEST levels in nearly 30 years,
a federal data analysis has found.
The overall suicide rate
rose by 24 percent from 1999 to 2014,
according to the
National Center for Health Statistics.
The rate rose by 2 percent a year
starting in 2006,
double the annual rise
in the earlier period of the study.

an alarming increase among girls 10 to 14,
whose suicide rate had tripled.

This is amply evidenced by The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the largest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster, Three Mile Island, a still missing nuclear warhead off the coast of New Jersey, the contamination of large swathes of land in Australia, the United States, some beautiful pacific islands, and many other areas, the placement of nuclear reactors close to known fault zones and ocean coasts and our inability to plan for storage of nuclear wastes. But, of the bright side (if that light is not the flash of another nuclear meltdown) certain related stock prices are up. And this leaves no doubt about why, and unbelievably why, we approved another reactor for this nation immediately following the Fukushima disaster.

My friends, there are those we elect and place in authority over our lives and the lives of our precious children that care more for profits than for the health and safety and survival of us!

One of our highly perceptive students recently told me, “Dr. A, the most valuable thing a person can possess is his vote. Wow! Do you think he knows more than us?

By the way, do some research on the internet utilizing key words such as fukushima contaminated fish, and fukushima radiation levels and ocean fish. You will be shocked! Radiation levels off the coast of Japan now measure 2,500 times safe levels. Let me repeat that: TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED TIMES more than safe levels.

I recently visited a Braum’s Store to purchase, among other items, some Tuna. No. Not available. It is feared to be contaminated.

We are in a race with ourselves to see if our intellect can accelerate at a rate faster than our brain’s subterranean ego centric center. It is a race of parallel dimensions which can only be overlaid by the one essential factor of survival. And that my friend lies buried deep within our hearts.

Yes, we need to terraform Mars and prepare another habitable place for our species, because it is looking more and more like Earth will become overheated, irradiated, underwater and otherwise uninhabitable for any species.

The pursuit of money may buy for us a future without a future.

The landscape of tomorrow must be engineered with a depth of compassion that lies hidden and only within the hearts of our children or it will be devoid of us. So, let us teach them how to love.

Our salvation lies outside of ourselves. It dwells deep within the hearts of those we seek to shelter from the storms of an unimaginable future. If we do not connect with them in a non-cognitive, deeply emotional and affective way, there truly may be no stepping back from the tipping points we are racing toward.

If we listen to our children, if we listen to their hearts, they will tell us what we need to know. We need but to ask. They are brimming full of wisdom and courage and empathy and honesty and love. Allow me to give you one good example.

A child recently asked, “Why does every politician in office not have a sign at the door that says – “NO LOBBYISTS”.

What wisdom! What cherished insight! Think of our gain as a society if the greed and self-interests and debilitating distortions of such illogical realities promulgated by greed and money, could be stopped at the entry door of those who control our destinies.

Yes, the great truths are simple. And they come from the stunningly beautiful minds of our innocent, honest and loving children. Let’s listen, before it’s too late. They have the answers. They have not been alive long enough to become corrupted with the sense of being related to and regulated by money.

Folks, our society is out of control and out of touch with reality. Let’s ask our children what we need to do.

While attending Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, I recall being awakened about 3:30 a.m. one morning by the beautiful songs of a Mocking Bird, just outside my window (he was very, very loud). We lived on several acres close to a small river that ran through town. Wildlife was everywhere and, needless to say, I was in Heaven on Earth, as I am today.

When I was awakened by this talented bird loudly singing, I decided to just listen and count the different number of songs that I heard. I really had no idea that this small beautiful creation had an unlimited number of melodies. So I eventually stopped counting and became mesmerized, actually put into a trance by the music.

It was a new experience for me. I literally listened for over two hours, as I recall. I simply could not stop listening it was so very beautiful. My mind relaxed so much that I started to feel quite different. The feeling was not something that I can describe to you. It was uplifting, exhilarating, deeply and intensely moving. I can still recall how I felt to this day. And it is one of the reasons I treasure all of God’s creations.

At the school we provide birdhouses, bird feeders and a bird bath for our feathered friends. And they provide an environment for our children that is virtually free of such things as misquotes (the deadliest creature that kills more people on earth than any other – known to carry over 550 viruses, and many of them, like malaria is estimated to have killed 655,000 people in 2010 alone, and yellow fever, among many others, and chiggers (a truly serious problem if you are bitten by enough of them), and other pests.

I have often wondered why city authorities in places such as Fort Worth do not expend funds and make some effort to distribute economically priced bird houses and helpful information on natural methods of controlling pests (such as leaving as many wasps/yellow jackets alone as much as possible, they eat mosquitoes for dessert and are not naturally aggressive) instead of spraying insecticides all over the place. Or, perhaps, offer tax or other incentives for utilizing natural methods and reducing the spreading of chemicals that are so toxic to us.

Yes, the singing of that precious Mockingbird so many years ago (in 1968) inspired me to provide for many other birds. And more importantly, to provide a school environment that is pesticide free. We have been committed to utilizing only natural methods to free ourselves of pests for many years. We simply do not use pesticides.

For example, we rid ourselves of harmful varieties of ants (not all ants, some are actually necessary) by sprinkling mounds (when we find them, which is rare now, with raw hominy grits (yes, they must be raw) which are carried to the Queen much to her demise (which is a wonderful and natural solution provided by Chris Stoll, one of our former students, many years ago. Thank you, again, Chris). Fly paper, coupled with fly swatters, solves any problem we have with flies.

By the way, there is truly disturbing news that pesticide exposure has been linked by research to cancer, birth defects, infertility, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, gastrointestinal disorders, reproductive problems as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as: Dementia (later in life by as much as 70%), Parkinson’s disease (a Harvard study reported a 70% increase as well), Alzheimer’s disease, Type II Diabetes (Click here for study) and many others. In addition, studies show that chronic low-level pesticide exposure is associated with a broad range of nervous system symptoms: headache, fatigue, dizziness, tension, anger, depression, and impaired memory. And child IQ loss has been linked to pesticide exposure in the womb and can raise the odds for ADHD in children.

Please research the link to these diseases and pesticides on the internet. And it is easy to research natural methods of controlling pests. Some of these diseases can be more than deadly, they can be so debilitating that your last few years on earth become unbelievably miserable. So much suffering can be alleviated with a simple shift in your mind set and a few easy changes made in your life.

So, as you can see, the precious, innumerable and memorable songs of that beautiful Mockingbird were songs of salvation. We have provided for and saved many birds and other creations and, importantly, they have provided for and saved us. God’s creatures are among the greatest teachers.

We are invited to enter the realm of England’s legendary King Henry VIII and experience the intellectual, cultural, and artistic splendor of the Renaissance first hand and will experience a full day of demonstrations, shows, and educational interactions. The Royal Court and villagers welcome, and in fact relish, discussions about daily life in the Renaissance.

Dangers of Cell Telephones for Children

According to the May 25, 2008 edition of the Daily Telegraph, the number of people using mobile phones jumped to over 3.3 billion globally. While Africa had the greatest increase, over two-thirds of all cell phone users are from third-world countries.

The cell phone industry funded a study of cell phone users in 1998 which was headed by Dr. George Carlo. His findings were as follows:

# an almost 300 percent increase in the incidence of genetic damage when human blood cells were exposed to radiation in the cellular frequency range
# a significant increase in cell phone users’ risk of developing brain tumors at the brain’s outer edge on whichever side the phone was held most often
# a 60 percent greater chance of acoustic neuromas, a tumor affecting the nerve that controls hearing, among people who had used cell phones for six years or more
# a higher rate of brain cancer deaths among hand held mobile phone users than among car phone users

A 2000 Swedish study and a 2002 Italian study confirmed Dr. Carlo’s findings. Other medical risks associated with cell phone usage is Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and impotence.

The development of cancer from heavy cell phone usage is potentially more dangerous than tobacco usage which came to a head in the ’90s. The numbers worldwide are much greater. Cases of brain cancer are projected to grow to 500,000 by 2010, and over a million cases in the United States alone by 2015!

Children are much more at risk because their skulls are not as thick as adult’s. Cell phone usage should be minimized by using landlines whenever possible. I make certain that when I do use a cell phone, I alternate ears.
